SONNY LANDRETH – Elemental Journey

Proper Records 2012

Although acclaimed slide guitarist Sonny Landreth has released ten previous albums this is the first all instrumental one. He also ropes in a few guests including fellow guitarist Eric Johnson and Robert Greenidge who adds his steel drum playing to ‘Forgotten Story’.

The slide guitar playing is as you’d expect superb and there is lots of musical variety. From the opening duo of jazz rock ‘Gaia Tribe’ and ‘For You And Forever’ (which sounded a lot like late 80′s Tangerine Dream!) through to the dreamy quality of ‘Letting Go’. ‘Reckless Beauty’ is a tune I am sure Wishbone Ash would love to cover whilst ‘Passionola’ reminded me a lot of 70′s Kansas mainly due to the 70′s flavoured keyboards played by Steve Conn.

Albums like this for me make a pleasant change from my main musical fare and I will doubtless be returning to play this again and again in the future. Quality slide guitar playing, strong tunes and plenty of variety – perfect listening.
