THE SWEET – New York Connection

The Sweet – the version fronted by original guitarist Andy Scott – return with an album of covers. The current line-up consists of the aforementioned Scott joined by Pete Lincoln (vocals/bass), Tony O’Hora (guitar/keys/vocals) and Bruce Bisland (drums/vocals). Yes it is another covers album but then this is the Sweet and they have given their own touch to the originals. You will never hear Dead Or Alive’s ‘You Spin Me Right Round (Like A Record)’ done like the Sweet do, slowing it down with a chugging guitar riff.

Drummer Bruce Bisland has fun on the Ramones’ ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’ (listen out for the brief snatch of the Sweet’s ‘Ballroom Blitz’), whilst not to be outdone Andy Scott puts in a sterling performance on ‘Sweet Jane’. This was originally recorded by the Velvet Underground bit actually sounds like a long lost 70’s Sweet tune! There is a cracking cover of ‘New York Groove’, written by Russ Ballard and a hit in the 70’s for glamsters Hello. It doesn’t always work as ‘Broadway’ doesn’t seem to work that well. The band even cover themselves on the title track, which was the B-side to ‘Wig Wam Bam’.

Great set of covers, some obvious and few off the wall choices like Black Eyed Peas and Dead Or Alive tunes. Hopefully next up will be an all new studio album.
