DORO – Raise Your Fist In The Air

DORO – “RAISE YOUR FIST IN THE AIR EP”
NUCLEAR BLAST (2012)

Metal Church - The Present Wasteland

Metal music has employed the services of many female vocalists over the years, none being more influential, respected and humble than Dorothee Pesch – the petite Dusseldorf-born blond with the massive voice. Doro’s career has been through many highs and lows over the last thirty two years but the release of the highly-acclaimed album “Fear No Evil” brought her to the attention of Nuclear Blast with whom she is now contracted. What better way, then, to start your musical relationship with your label and ‘test the waters’ than through the release of a four track EP? This is exactly what Doro thought and that is how “Raise Your Fist In The Air” came to life.

The flag-bearer and main focus of this EP is the opening track “Raise Your Fist”, a typical mid tempo vocally-led Hard Rocker featuring a few simple but fairly inspired lead guitar melodies and an anthemic refrain. “Victory” is another simply-crafted sing-along tune, this time, however, the guitar riffs are crunchier and Doro’s vocals harsher and more commanding. Ballads are what Doro does best, as proven by the five minute “Engel”, a composition based on an emotional piano theme with clever orchestral arrangements in a supporting role and performed in Pesch’s native language. On paper, a French version of “Raise Your Fist” may sound both dangerous and unnecessary but Doro makes a decent job of it, adding a certain spice to this short and introductory piece of work.

EPs are, by nature, normally targeted at a band’s loyal fan base and “Raise Your Fist In The Air” is no exception to that rule. What I personally like about this four track release it that it portrays Doro as an artist who after all these years is still on top of her game – an artist who can still come up with decent melodies and who’s not afraid to add variety to her work. Doro’s debut studio album is scheduled for October this year – till then, sit back, relax and enjoy this EP. You will not be disappointed.
