BB KING – The Life Of Riley

(DV /Blu Ray, also 2CD) Universal

Riley B King, aka BB, is one of the greatest, influential and innovative blues guitarists ever. Now 87, he has had a VERY long career too.

This documentary, the DVD release of the film, is a real insight, covering his entire career. With an intro from Bill Cosby, and narration from Morgan Freeman, there are a host of guests offering anecdotes as well as live clips, some going way back.  There’s even footage from the church his mum made him attend as a kid. Some real archive material and treasures too, with family speaking about his childhood too.

Buddy Guy, Bono, Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Johnny Winter, Slash and Ronnie Wood are just a few of the plethora of talking heads, but the key here is the music. You can’t not like the blues the way BB plays it. Director Brewer worked closely with King over two years for this theatrical release and the time care and attention has paid off.

This is really worth checking out, it’s engrossing and enjoyable.

There is a CD soundtrack featuring the music in full in the same running order. The 2CD is 26 tracks and the is a 19 track single CD version too.
