STONE SOUR – House of Gold and Bones, Part 1

Roadrunner

Sour feature Corey Taylor on vocals, who sounds very different than the other band he is in Slipknot. Stone Sour have proved a massive success to date and on this new album they have the first part of two part concept (part two is out in March next year). The concept is based either on Corey Taylor’s childhood or how it feels to be either part of something or on your own. Either way they tap into progressive rock – not the 70′s or 80′s sounds but more in common with snippets of Pink Floyd and modern bands like Riverside.

The album starts with a real two song salvo in ‘Gone Sovereign’ and ‘Absolute Zero’ – check out ‘Gone Sovereign’ for some seriously heavy riffing and vocals. ‘RU486′ is another beast of a song and is not dissimilar to Disturbed and their ilk. Where Stone Sour start to stretch musically is on the two part ‘The Traveler’. Corey Taylor wheels out his melodic vocal side to great effect and the music draws the listener in. It can sound like an album of two halves though as there are three or four heavy commercial metal tunes, then the more thoughtful and intricate songs but the band manage to join it all together.

Overall a strong well rounded album setting it up nicely for part two, although in proper prog rock tradition they should have released parts one and two together (although I am sure a two-in-one package will be planned with bonus material sometime in the future). Stone Sour already have success but this album and its successor could see them have massive cross over mainstream success. Roll on part two!
