Jakob Samuel burst onto the international rock scene with The Poodles fifteen years ago and the band hasn’t looked back. The Swede has recorded his first solo album, “PastPresent”, a curveball from the Scandi rock norm…
The album is not the rocking Poodles you would expect. Instead it follows a more pop/rock vein, but don’t let this put you off. The songs are beautifully crafted and are performed with finesse; Samuel’s voice caressing your ear drums. He performs a couple of duets (“Voices of Somewhere” and “When I Close My Eyes”) to add further depth to the release. “Vagabond Shoes” has a Broadway feel to it, particularly with the piano interlude, underlining the superb arrangements on this work. The highlights here are too numerous to mention, with no poor song to be found.
Smooth, sophisticated, classy. Pop/rock albums don’t get better than this and Jakob Samuel can hold his head high, despite his heavy rock background.
