PATTI SMITH – Live at Montreux 2005

Eagle Vision

Filmed at the 39th annual Montreux Jazz festival in 2005, and in support of her recent “Trampin’” album, this new DVD from Eagle Vision finds Patti Smith in fine form. Backed by a band including original Patti Smith Group drummer Jay Dee Daugherty and guitarist Lenny Kaye, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine and long time bass and keyboard player Tony Shanahan, Smith tears through a set that covers her career from 1975 to date.

With her undeniably distinctive vocal style, I suppose the ultimate highlight of the set is Smith’s massively successful version of the Springsteen penned “Because The Night”. There are also covers of Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone” and Smith’s formidable take on Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away”, the latter morphing into her own “Momento Mori”. Other highlights amongst the 12 song set include “25th Floor”, the slow reggae lilt of opening track “Redondo Beach” and the slow burning “Seven Ways of Going” and “Peaceable Kingdom”.

“Live at Montreux 2005” is actually Smith’s first live release in a career that has spanned nearly 40 years and has influenced both punk and new wave, and will no doubt be a welcome addition to her catalogue.
