Album Review: ANNIHILATOR – Feast

UDR [Release date 26.08.13]

This album is the 14th studio release from Canadian thrashers Annihilator. I have been aware of the band for many years but have never really warmed to them, even their ‘Alice In Hell’ album couldn’t convince me of their greatness. So it was with trepidation that I approached this latest album.

I was, however, in for a pleasant surprise as this album has plenty to offer. Starting off the album in traditional full on thrash style is ‘Deadlock’, which is almost Slayer like and certainly grabs your attention. ‘No Way Out’ follows and again rocks hard, but there is melody and harmony in there as well which adds to the overall sound.

Further surprises await though, especially on the track ‘No Surrender’ which sounds like a thrash Red Hot Chilli Peppers which works really well and was something I wasn’t expecting.

Another track that works well is ‘Wrapped’ which was co-written by and features Danko Jones. It is an urgent, almost punk like track which motors along nicely. The ballad ‘Perfect Angel Eyes’ is up next and is a real ‘lighters in the air’ stadium rocker, again something I wasn’t expecting to find.

The album then ups the pace once again on the final three tracks, the last of which, ‘One Falls, Two Rise’, is an eight and a half minute marathon that twists and turns like a rollercoaster. This is a good album, so have I been unfair on the band over the years ?

To answer that this package handily came with a bonus disc, ‘Re-Kill’, which contains 15 Annihilator classics from throughout their career.  Having listened to this I have to say my opinion remained the same, I find their back catalogue uninspiring and a bit ‘thrash by numbers’ to be honest.

Annihilator 2013 appear to have finally found their mojo and produced a body of work with some great playing and interesting and entertaining songs. ‘Feast’ is well worth a listen and with the bonus disc it is a great package. Whether you choose to play the second disc though is entirely at your discretion!

***1/2 for Feast

** for Re-Kill
