Album review: COLDSPELL – Frozen Paradise

Coldspell

Album number three from ColdSpell and Tommy Hansen (Helloween/Pretty Maids) is again at the mixing desk.

Good to see the keyboards and Hammond playing of Matti Eklund higher in the mix and like the Pretty Maids the keys/organ are used like a rhythm guitar part. This is shown on the hard rocker ‘Angel Of The World’ and on ‘Life Has Just Begun’ the band have that slow build to an epic chorus like Whitesnake in their late 80’s finery. ‘Life 2 Live’ (a touch of the Jeff Scott Soto’s on the song title!) is the most obvious airplay song on here and one for the live shows I am sure.

Vocalist Niclas Swedentorp has a suitably powerful range, none more so than on ‘Soldiers’ a song that sees the band taking on a slight Celtic air in the main guitar riff. Something different from the band – like Thin Lizzy meets TNT – making it one of the album’s highlights.

They haven’t put out a duff album yet and with ‘Frozen Paradise’ they have released quite possibly their best to date. If you like hard edged melodic rock a la Pretty Maids or Gotthard this album is one for you.
