Album review: MATTHEW GOOD – Arrows Of Desire

Frostbyte (double CD)

Matthew Good releases his eleventh album (sixth solo album) as he switches between solo releases and those under the Matthew Good Band handle. He has had massive success in his native Canada.

On this album he has tapped into his influences including the Pixies to make a rather enjoyable album. Pick of the bunch includes ‘We’re Long Gone’ that could be the Hold Steady,  whilst on the title track he sounds a little like classic era R.E.M. as he has a little of Michael Stipe in his vocal phrasing. R.E.M. also come again to mind on ‘Hey Hell Heaven’, a fantastic tune and one of the album’s stand outs.

Disc two includes a couple of live versions of his earlier songs and the rest of the songs are mainly Matthew with just an acoustic guitar and occasional piano. This opens up a whole new side of his performance and they sound as equally as strong as those with full musical backing. ’North American For Life’ and ‘Truffle Pigs’ are the stand outs here.

Listening to these two discs you can see why he has had so much success in Canada and beyond. Highly recommended for those who enjoy the Pixies, the Hold Steady and the 80’s era of R.E.M.
