Album review: BECKY MILLS – Dandelion

Splid Records www.beckymills.com

Becky Mills was part of the wonderful, although sadly no more, Waking The Witch and she has played solo since and as a duo with fellow former Waking The Witch member Patsy Matheson.  The recording for this album started back in 2010 and has taken this long due to no record label support. But it has been well worth the wait!

Those who have yet to hear Becky Mills’ voice are in for a treat. She has a lovely, melodious tone and the songs are here are simply wonderful. There are songs that the listener can relate to, the moving ‘Let It Go’ which has become a firm favourite with me. The brass arrangement on ‘Family’ really brings the song alive, whilst ‘Amy Sharpe’ as well as being a strong song features wonderful ukulele and banjo in the musical mix. The closing song ‘Monkey’ features a whole host of musicians and backing singers, along with a guest appearance from folk legend Ashley Hutchings.

An album to enjoy and make those musical spirits fly! Proof that singer/songwriter does not have to mean soul gazing and whiny vocals, instead you get a lovely voice and high quality musical arrangements.
