Album review: INCURA – S/T

Inside Out [Released 24th February 2014]

This Canadian band Incura have been around since 2003 having released a series of EP’s and this is their first album given a full release. Two things strike you on first listen, the high pitched almost operatic vocals of Kyle Gruninger and the band’s wide musical melting pot taking in Queen, Dream Theater, Broadway and My Chemical Romance to name but a few.

Broadway/West End musical pomp? Look no further than ‘Who Are You’ and check out those amazing harmonies on the choruses. My Chemical Romance certainly spring to mind when listening to ‘I Breathe This’ and ‘I’m Here Waiting’, strong tunes both. Bit of Dream Theater in the musical arrangements on ‘Turning Blue’, again clever use of vocal harmonies on this song.

‘Decide’ is Queen-like and the vocals of Kyle Gruninger soar above the piano backing at the start, before it turns into a guitar fest midway through. An album highlight and no mean feat given the strength of the rest of the album. For something totally different ‘Here To Blame’ adds in some screamo vocals and is the heaviest song on the album.

Incura also do ballads with ‘I’d Give Anything’ and ‘Sweat Runs Cold’, love the piano/vocal intro on this one.

Inside Out keep pulling these highly talented and enjoyable bands out of their musical hat. Last year we had Leprous, Sound Of Contact and Haken, now add Incura to this list. A very impressive album full of musical delights and melodies to keep in your head long after you’ve finished playing the album. ****1/2
