Album review: SINBREED – Shadows

AFM Records [Released 14.04.14]

Sinbreed is a new band to me but Blind Guardian is not and both guitarist Marcus Siepen and drummer Frederik Ehmke have their day job there. Shadows is the follow up to 2010’s debut When Worlds Collide and their first for new record label AFM Records.

Sinbreed’s driving force and founder is guitarist Flo Laurin and he is joined by the aforementioned Blind Guardian pair plus bassist Alexander Schulz. Vocalist Herbie Langhans name rang a bell and after checking I remembered he was the vocalist on Beyond The Bridge’s superb debut on Frontiers back in early 2012.

Sinbreed deal in what used to be known as speed metal (now more commonly called power metal) á la early Helloween and from start to finish Shadows is relentless…and to be honest that’s my main problem with this.

Bleed kicks things off at a fair old pace and then almost nothing changes until London Moon rings out its final chord. Nothing wrong with any of the musical abilities on show here and Herbie does a sterling job belting out the lyrics with a powerful intensity. Everything blends into everything else as the album is just too one paced. If one song does stand out I suppose it has to be Reborn…not that the tempo changes but the chorus is extremely catchy. Final track Broken Wings tries to throw a spanner in the works with an atmospheric acoustic introduction and epilogue but in between it is unfortunately more of the same.

Shadows is an intense listen but there is no variation. Let’s have some more light and shade with the next release guys. ***
