Album review: CARL VERHEYEN – Mustang Run

Carl Verheyen - Mustang Run

Cranktone Entertainment [Release date 17.03.14]

Carl Verheyen is perhaps most familiar as the latter-day-Supertramp guitarist.  He’s also had a parallel session and instructional career and ‘Mustang Run’ is an excellent introduction to this quality musician.  He’s also enlisted the help of heavyweight mates from drummer Gregg Bissonette to Bill Evans on saxophone and even pinched sometime Satriani bass player Stu Hamm for several tracks.

This is fusion par excellence from the opening ‘Taylor’s Blues’ where Verheyen’s fluid tones are complemented by Jim Cox’s Hammond to the upbeat title track which has him sparring with Mahavishnu/Flock violinist Jerry Goodman.

But there are nice contrasts.  ‘Julietta And The St.George’ is a more pastoral affair which reminds me of Martin Barre’s latest solo stuff before it develops with a funky undertow.

But everywhere there are great displays of Verheyen’s jazz-fusion credentials, including the aptly-titled ‘Fusioneers Disease’ one of two tracks with Simon Phillips on drums.

The album will appeal  to fans of Robben Ford and Eric Johnson and Verheyen is right up there with them in terms of his tonal approach and musicality.  And there’s even a nod to his regular band job, enlisting John Helliwell on sax for a slowed-down and bluesy ‘Bloody Well Right’.  ****
