AMERICAN DOG – Neanderthal
Bad Reputation (Release date 19.07.14)
American Dog are from Ohio and formed in 1999. They have released many albums, nine to be exact, three of them live albums, and an EP. Neanderthal is their latest and the first to be recorded as a four piece.
American Dog play old school rock and roll with attitude, great riffs and pounding bass. Their sound is very reminiscent of Alice Cooper, especially in ‘Who’s She Killin’. The vocalist, Michael Hannon, sounds rough and earthy and suits the band’s style well.
They also play some slow blues, ‘Sun Won’t Shine’ and ‘Devil Inside’. There are plenty of styles on show here, ‘Neanderthal’ starts with a riff which reminded me strongly of ‘Smoke on The Water’, ’Stuck In The Mud’ is fairly punky and after a ‘Close Encounterish’ start ‘Dog Eat Dog’ moves into Saxon/Scorpion territory with a riff lifted and merged from ‘747 Strangers In The Night’ and ‘Loving You Sunday Morning’.
The band have recently supported Tesla on tour and I would recommend catching them if you can. ***1/2

ALONE WITH WOLVES – The End Of Nothing EP

Alone With Wolves formed in 2011, they are a five piece hailing from Hertfordshire and North London. This is their second EP, the first ‘Alone With Wolves’ was released in 2012. They are due to play at the Bloodstock festival this year.
‘The End of Nothing’ has five tracks, ‘Cutting Ties’, ‘The End Of Nothing’, ‘My Life In Your Hands’, ‘The Change’ and ‘With You In Mind’.
‘The Change’ is the quietest song on the EP, it is less aggressive than the rest but has less impact. The rest of the tracks have pounding bass, strong rhythms and plenty of raw shouting and screaming, by Lewis Watson, counteracted by the great vocals of Danilo Fiocco. My favourite track is ‘With You In Mind’ which starts with a great riff and rattles along with a great melody and plenty of screaming.
Alone With Wolves have a sound very similar to Killswitch Engage and they claim influences from 30 Seconds To Mars and Deaf Havana. They are a very able band, nothing groundbreaking but I would try to catch them if they were playing nearby. ***
