EP Review : FORGED IN BLACK – The Exodus

Forged in Black from Essex are releasing their first EP this December however under their former name, Merciless Fail, the band released both an album and an EP and played at the Bloodstock Festival in 2012 and Metal Gods Festival in 2013.
The Exodus contains three tracks and it is quite a fun listen. Opening track, ‘The Exodus’, is the band’s latest single and it is an epic track opening with heavy, melodic riffs. Chris Storozynski’s vocal style is distinctive, at times you can imagine him hamming it up in a hard-rock musical.
Track two, Accusations Of The Innocent, is my favourite track, not the best track which is ‘Forged In Black’ but it is very amusing, think cheesy musical and the hairy man from Dave Gorman’s razor ad, hilarious!
Final track, ‘Forged In Black’, is musically the best track on offer here. You can hear touches of Sabbath in the opening riffs then as it develops there are Maidenesque harmonies accompanied by dexterous key and rhythm changes.
The Exodus is true heavy metal, containing elements of thrash with harmonies and shouted vocals, fantastic guitar riffs and plenty of throbbing bass.
Well worth a listen if you happen by it, I would like to catch them live to see if they are as dramatic as they come across here. ***

EP Review : INHERIT THE STARS – Beyond The Beacons

Inherit The Stars are a quartet from Sheffield who formed in 2012. Beyond The Beacons is the band’s second EP. Inherit The Stars play alternative rock/metalcore with a nod to classic pop. The band are influenced by Enter Shikari among others and this EP is produced by Jim Pinder (Fightstar, While She Sleeps, Rise To Remain)
Beyond The Beacons contains five tracks and all are well polished slabs of music. Opener, ‘Still Alive’ begins with a lone piano which is then joined by guitar leading into a catchy, well played song, one of the quieter tracks this one, less heavy but with plenty shouted vocals never the less. ‘Flaws’ is up next, not one of my favourite tracks this one, a bit repetitive and I felt the shouts were missing the mark on this track.
‘Exit Plan’ and closer, ‘On Our Own‘, are good solid tracks, catchy choruses, great riffs. Some unexpectedly good, psychedelic synth work in ‘Better Than This’ takes the band in another direction and certainly sets them apart from the run of the mill plethora of bands who are out there, this is the best track on the EP for me.
Worth a listen. ***
