Quick Plays: NINE BLACK ALPS, EDENIAL

Album review: NINE BLACK ALPS – Live From The Wishing Well

Hatch Records (Release date 04.05.15)

After 12 years and 5 studio albums, UK Grunge rock exponents Nine Black Alps are about to release their first live album. Recorded in the Gorilla in Manchester in December 2013, the night covered all points of the band’s career from their early singles to numbers from their latest album.

The guys are proud of their Grunge roots and whilst they may have tightened up their delivery over the years they still have that Nirvanaesque sound and attitude which any early nineties angst ridden teen would be familiar with.

If you are new to the band then this live album is a good introduction to their music and if you are already a fan then this is a must have as a record of a special night in the band’s history.

If grunge was your bag back in the day and you feel the need to recapture that checked shirt wearing, shoe gazing vibe then this is the album for you.

Album Review: EDENIAL – Innerpretations

Self release (release date 16.12.14)

Some of the craziest rock crowds in the world can be found in the countries of South America so when this album came through from Chilean rockers Edenial I was hoping for some energetic metal. What you get though is well played prog metal which is ok but nothing you can’t get from many other bands in the genre.

One thing that does make the band stand out, but not in a good way, are the vocals of frontwoman Fran. Think early Geddy Lee on helium and you are on the right lines, at points she sings so high only my dog could fully appreciate the results.

Not to my taste then, perhaps if this is as good as homegrown Chilean rock gets then it is no wonder the fans are a wild bunch!
