Book review: AC/DC FAQ by Susan Masino

AC/DC FAQ by SUSAN MASINO

Published by Backbeat Books [Published 30.04.15] RRP £20.00

Susan Masino has written a previous book on AC/DC ‘The Story Of AC/DC: Let There Be Rock’, from which a fair amount of this FAQ book is compiled from. That said it has up to date interviews and news from the band including drummer Phil Rudd’s arrest at the end of 2014 and the subsequent return of former drummer Chris Slade.

There is the usual run through the band’s albums, studio and live plus a brief run through the band’s relentless touring schedule, although this has slowed down in recent years. Masino writes as a fan so it is not in a critical style nor should it be really as this is a book for information and stories about the band.

Some interesting pieces on Albert Productions (formed by George Young and Harry Yanda) who handled production and management for not only AC/DC but other artists like Rose Tattoo and the Angels, plus Irish rockers the Answer when they started out.

Lots of backstage antics are recalled along with on the road tales featuring the late Bon Scott. Plus you get the band’s fist American interview reprinted and what musicians influenced the band. The only slight drawback is there is a ‘quick facts’ section of FAQ in A-Z format, like the band’s first gig, first platinum seller etc.

Of definite interest to the band’s many fans and plenty of behind the scenes stories to give a good insight to the band, although unless a book is written by a band member you will never truly get every detail out.  ***
