Album Review: – STAHLMANN – CO2

AFM Records [release date 28.08.15]

Another AFM release and another German band I’ve never heard of…”CO2” is Stahlmann’s fourth studio album and follows on from “Adamant”, which made number 34 in the German album charts, back in 2013.

Stahlmann were formed back in 2008 by vocalist Martin Soer and original guitarist Alexander Scharfe. They came up with the idea of performing covered in silver paint and so the name Stahlmann, or in English “steel man”, was chosen. The 2015 version of the band only contains Martin Soer from the early days along with guitarist Frank Herzig, bassist Ablaz, Johannes Thon on keyboards and a certain Max Maschine on drums…not his real name surely…

“CO2” is an industrial rock album and is sung entirely in German…and thus the Rammstein comparisons begin!

From opener Feindflug (Sortie) through to closing track Nimm Mein Hand (Take My Hand) you can only really think of Rammstein…from the electronic keyboards, crunching riffs and the deep vocals of Martin Soer…there can be no other comparison!

Plasma is the first single, featuring a Mad Max like post-apocalyptic video, and is a little different through bits of dubstep thrown in. Die Klinge (The Blade) is a slow atmospheric number in the vein of Rammstein’s Mutter. Nothing more really needs to be said.

It’s all very catchy industrial metal, all well played…but most of the songs could be remixes of songs from a Rammstein rarities album. Still enjoyable all the same!
