DVD review: YOUTH – Sketch, Drugs & Rock n’ Roll

YOUTH - Sketch, Drugs & Rock n’ Roll

Cadiz Music [Release date 23.09.16]

Producer, artist, poet, DJ and bass player, who has also worked as a producer and remixer for the likes of Paul McCartney, U2, Guns n Roses, Primal Scream and Boy George (and that is just the short list), ‘Sketch, Drugs & Rock n’ Roll’ tells the story of the artist known as Youth.

The subject is philosophical, creative and spiritual and the documentary is very watchable- this is because Youth is both personable and likeable, and let me assure you, there are also some great rock n’ roll tales to be heard here.

Known primarily as the bass player for Killing Joke in the 1980′s it is throughout the ‘90′s that his work as a producer came to the wider audience. Interviews with Paul McCartney, Jas Coleman, David Gilmour, Boy George, Alan McGee and Embrace’s Danny McNamara, amongst others, help build a picture of the man who you get the feeling feels that he has blagged his way through a multi-layered and successful career.

The extras on the DVD include additional interviews and photos. A bonus disc features a 43 minute track that is a DJ mix of previously unreleased music from Youth.

‘Sketch, Drugs & Rock n’ Roll’ is one of those great musical documentaries that you pick up where you don’t know much about an artist but leave you wanting to hear more.  ****
