Album review: LISBEE STAINTON – Then Up

LISBEE STAINTON - Then Up

Marionet Music [Release date 21.04.17]

Lisbee Stainton returns with her first new album in three years. Like previous albums she utilises skilled musicians she has worked with either in Seth Lakeman’s band – guitarist Jack Rutter and percussionist Cormac Byrne – or long term bassist Pete Randall (who is in Adele’s touring band). GRTR! favourite Eleanor McEvoy guests musically as well as co-writing three songs on the album.

Lisbee Stainton has previously had support and airtime on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6Music amongst others and with bittersweet folk/pop of ‘Vodka And Tonic’ on here, she has another one made for radio airplay. ‘Spark’ goes down the traditional folk route featuring some breath-taking vocals.

The musical variety on this album is another string point, as Lisbee can one minute be in a gentle pop refrain for ‘Reason’, then in the folk with a little jazz on ‘Gloria’. Clever use of vocals on the fade out of this one, a tale of two people on opposite sides of the Berlin wall.

Bonus song ‘Be Still’ featuring just an acoustic guitar, allows Lisbee to draw focus onto her vocal, which is very soothing and melodious. A quieter end to an album of musical delights.

Quite possibly Lisbee Stainton’s best work to date, drawing on her musical strengths from previous albums to produce an album that you will want to listen to again and again.  ****
