Album review: DREW HOLCOMB AND THE NEIGHBORS – Souvenir

DREW HOLCOMB AND THE NEIGHBORS - Souvenir

Magnolia Music [Release date 21.04.17]

With a Masters degree dissertation on ‘Springsteen and American Redemptive Imagination’, and tour support slots for the likes of The Avett Brothers, Ryan Adams and Los Lobo it’s not hard to guess what to expect from indie Americana act Drew Holcomb And The Neighbors.

With a  prolific output of, now, ten albums since forming in 2005, it’s Holcomb’s last couple of releases – Good Light (2013) and Medicine (2015) that have tickled the US mainstream top 100, and top 50 respectively, and made even more favourable inroads into the US folk, rock and indie charts.

Major TV placements have been a key to that wider appeal and Souvenir continues to court the mainstream in the manner in which Ryan Adams is so capable (when he chooses not to go off-piste).

The result is an extraordinarily [American] radio friendly record that stretches from the driving West Coast country rock of ‘California’, to the front-porch folk of ‘Mama’s Sunshine’, ‘Daddy’s Rain’ and is likely to yield similar marketing opportunities.

In many ways, the epitome of modern American[a] music.  And it has to be said, beautifully produced.  ****
