Album review: LIONE CONTI – s/t

LIONE CONTI

Frontiers [Release date 26.01.18]

A few years ago Frontiers released a series of albums from Allen Lande – Symphony X’s Russell Allen and Jorn Lande – which are very good. Now in a similar idea i.e. linking two name vocalists together, we have Fabio Lione and Alessandro Conte, both of whom have fronted the various versions of Rhapsody (Conte also fronts Trick Or Treat). The duo teamed up with DGM guitarist/composer and producer Simone Mularoni who certainly manages to get a fair few guitar solos into the songs.

They each get two songs where they sing the lead, sharing the other six songs with the slower ‘Somebody Else’ one of the album’s stand out songs. The sound of Rhapsody obviously comes to mind given the vocalists, with ‘Truth’ adding in plenty of symphonic bombast associated with that band. Those aforementioned guitar solos are all over ‘Gravity’, another album highlight, bringing to mind Gamma Ray in the relentless backing rhythm.

An enjoyable album which, whilst not reaching the standard of the Allen Lande debut, is of definite interest to fans of the two versions of Rhapsody and lovers of melodic metal. Hopefully this isn’t a one-off as the two vocalists work well together.  ***1/2
