Album review: MY GLASS WORLD – Prisoner Of Gravity

MY GLASS WORLD - Prisoner Of Gravity

Luxury Noise [Release date 01.06.18]

My Glass World is a vehicle for singer / songwriter Jamie Telford who’s ‘claim to fame’ is having played the driving piano that graces The Jam’s #1 single ‘Beat Surrender’ (1982). He’s also a trained classical composer writing for film, theatre, and TV, his work having been performed by the National Youth Orchestra and Southbank Sinfonia.

But My Glass World (this is the third release following Book One (2011), The Year Happy (2014)) is his personal indulgence, his vocals and piano underpinning this deliberately lo-fi, sparse and stripped back set.

It’s a throwback to the gentle pop/rock singer songwriter days of the likes of Clifford T Ward with ne’r a muscle strained, ne’r a flurry of pace. A singularly paced, rambling brook of an album, with no need for speed.

Atmospheric and at times melancholic, there’s some beautifully restrained playing and some wonderful hooks. If there’s a latter day comparator, it’s the likes of James Grant (of Love And Money renown) and while Prisoners of Gravity isn’t going to set any pulses racing, it’s an album of rare depth and quality. ****
