Album review: ANGELINE – Shadowlands

Blow Your Fez Off Music [Release date 28.09.18]

Angeline were formed in Sweden in 1987 and having taken a hiatus somewhere down the line the band reformed in 2010, since then they have released three studio albums, the latest being “Shadowlands”. The band seem to have taken a good deal of influence from such heavyweights as Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Europe and you can hear this throughout the album, especially on tracks like “Live Life (Like You Mean It)”, which is reminiscent of the softer side of the first two bands, or “Higher Than Love” and “Better Than The Real Thing”, both of which remind me of the rockier heyday of Bon Jovi’s past.

“Shadowlands” opening salvo of “I Wanna Know” and “Slow Down” drew me right in though with their straight ahead polished, big energy rock and begged the question “Why haven’t I heard of this band before?”.

“Believe” starts out with some country style guitar that soon explodes into a melodic rock gem, the album contains a fairly middle of the road ballad in “I’m Here For You” but this soon gives way to “Enemy Within”, which certainly picks the pace up, and the albums highlights are rounded off by “The Devil You Know”.

In 2018 it is great to know that bands that have been around for over three decades can still produce albums like “Shadowlands”, and that there is still a massive market for this. If, like me, you haven’t heard of Angeline, and you are a fan of any of the above, then I recommend you investigate immediately. ****
