Album review: JOANovARC

JOANovARC

Holier Than Thou Records [Release date 31.05.19]

JOANovARC released their debut album ‘Ride Of Your Life’ to critical acclaim in 2016. Now they are back with their second album, mixed and mastered by Wayne Proctor and recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studio. JOANovARC are Samantha Walker (bass, vocals), Shelley Walker (lead guitar, backing vocals), Laura Ozholl (rhythm guitar, vocals) and Deborah Widish (drums).

Good to see a band with all the members chipping in with song writing and lyrically they pull no punches covering drug addiction, relationships and the 2011 London riots.

‘Take It Out’ rocks like a good ‘un, with tambourines to the fore and a little snippet of the riff recalls the B-52’s hit ‘Rock Lobster’. At the other end of the energetic scale is the ballad ‘When We Were Young’, which is fuelled by acoustic guitars and features a suitably fine guitar solo. Speaking of guitars, Shelley Walker lays down another mighty fine solo on ‘Try It On’.

JOANovARc funk it up (or disco rock as the band call it) on ‘People Coming Up’, showing another side to the band’s sound. Whilst ‘Burning’ (the song based on the London riots) and ‘Waiting For’ are full of passionate singing and riffs so big you could hang your coat on them.

No problems with second album syndrome for JOANovARC as they have the looks ‘n’ hooks to produce a zesty set of tunes. ***1/2
