Guitarist Lars Eric Mattsson (Condition Red, Mattsson) returns with a new album ‘Into The Unknown’, that sees him tap into his more melodic style of playing and song writing. He is joined by Alexander King on keyboards and drummer Christer Jansson.
Lars Eric Mattson has been recording and producing since the mid-80’s, so he certainly knows a thing or two about penning melodic tunes, which despite his guitar wizardry, do not fall into the trap of becoming widdly solos that only a few can listen to. Instead we have the hooked filled melodic rockers ‘Give It All’ and ‘This Is Your Storm’, or for a bit of variety try the bluesy ‘Burning Hot’.
Lars Eric Mattsson doesn’t have an overly emotive singing style, however he does give it all on the ballad ‘Soul Mate’. This segues neatly into the short acoustic instrumental ‘Epilogue for a Broken Heart’.
There are a few short instrumental pieces doted throughout the album including the marvellously funky ‘Too Close To The Sun’.
One of Lars Eric Mattsson’s more straight ahead melodic rock albums and one that grows with the listener on each repeated play. ***1/2
