Album review: TURBOKILL – Vice World

TURBOKILL - Vice World

SPV/Steamhammer [Release date 25.10.19]

What we have here is a contender for the next generation of classic rock. In 2019 we get album based on the kind of classic trad metal that, at the heavier end, influenced and then rode alongside power metal. Think late 80′s/early 90′s Judas Priest, even a touch of mid to late 90′s Saxon.

This German band Turbokill (for the Germans have made power metal their own) were formed by former Alpha Tiger vocalist Stephan Dietrich, and is joined here by guitarists Ronny Schuster and Daniel Kanzier, bassist Marco “Fox” Grunwald and drummer Philipp “Nafta” Diessl.

A great building intro that storms into the title track, which totally rocks. The guitar work and interplay stands out. There’s some nice high speed work over machine gun rhythms.

There’s many an anthemic moment, which largely are excellent. But in ‘Pulse Of The Storm’ the anthemic vocal line over some chunky guitar riffs doesn’t flow as well as it does elsewhere on the album. The same track continues in epic fashion though.

Lyrically the band are quite astute, global affairs, the current industry (‘Global Monkey Show’ for example), there’s good reason to question aspects of society as they do.

There’s much an influence here, you can see a hint of power metal bands like Mob Rules, and a touch of early 80′s American metal, like Hammers Rules.

All the roots are visible, but the performance is spot on, and if it keeps the next generation switched on to classic/trad metal, then that has to be applauded. ****
