Album review: SHRED KELLY – Like A Rising Sun

SHRED KELLY - Like A Rising Sun

Devil Duck Records [Release date 03.07.20]

Where do these excellent bands keep appearing from? Shred Kelly are another one, a five piece alt folk rock band (and not a speed metal band as their name may suggest) hailing from Canada who started out in 2009. Shred Kelly consist of co-vocalists Tim Newton and Sage McBride, Ty West (guitars), Jordan Vlasschaert (bass), and Ryan Mildenberger (drums). Their fifth album ‘Like A Rising Sun’ was produced by Nygel Asselin and mixed by Ben Kaplan.

Over the years, Shred Kelly has had the opportunity to perform across Canada and internationally at festivals such as Reeperbahn Festival, Australian Music Week, Folk Alliance, SXSW, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest and SKOOKUM Festival. Listening to this album they are the perfect festival band having tunes that can appeal after just one hearing.

The album starts with a bounce in ‘Rising Sun’, a proper earworm of a tune. Folk, pop, rock – it has it all. If that wasn’t enough to get you up and about, the album’s stand out ‘Roman Candle Eyes’ is next. What a great tune, mixing the rousing anthems Runrig did so well along with a pop friendly chorus. One for radio and those streaming playlists.

The two vocalists work well, either with Sage McBride supporting Tim Newton to good effect on ‘Take Me Home’, or the mellower ‘You Almost Mean the World To Me’ where Sage takes the lead vocal. The rest of the band are no slouches either, from the frantic banjo playing on ‘The Hill’ through to nifty bass lines and thundering drums on ‘Underground’.

Closing song ‘Disconnect’ is an interesting one, not only the longest song at over eight minutes, but the one that shows the alt rock side to the band. Frantic guitars and the co-vocals of Tim and Sage make for a heady brew.

Shred Kelly have an album of top quality songs on their hands, sure to help them gain wider recognition and new fans. Top quality folk rock with a distinct melodic edge, glorious stuff. ****
