Album review: MAGNUS KARLSSON’S FREE FALL – We Are The Night

Frontiers [Release date 12.06.20]

Album number three from the Free Fall project fronted by Primal Fear guitarist Magnus Karlsson, who has been busy of late having had a hand in the recent Allen/Olzen album also released by Frontiers.

Karlsson handles the instruments and songwriting side of the album, bar the drums which were played by Anders Köllerfors. There are numerous guests stepping up the mic stand, with highlights being former Black Sabbath vocalist Tony Martin on ‘Temples And Towers’ (a distinct Dio-era Rainbow feel on the guitar intro and song’s sound overall) and ‘Far From Over’.

‘Queen Of Fire’ allows Battle Beast’s Noora Louhimo to show what a powerful singer she is. A nicely executed piece of power metal, full of pomp and splendour.

It can get a bit metal by numbers as ‘Under The Black Star’ proves, which features Dino Jelusick. He has a much better song to sing in ‘Hold Your Fire’, a fine piece of melodic metal.

Being a guitarist he is allowed one instrumental wig out surely? He does that on ‘On My Way Back To Earth’, a rewarding mix of lead guitar, acoustic guitar and a layering of keys.

There is nothing that hasn’t been done before on this latest Free Fall album and it stands up well to the previous two albums. Fans of this project will love this latest installment. ***1/2
