EP review: SEMISONIC – You’re Not Alone

SEMISONIC – You’re Not Alone

Order link [Release date 18.09.20]

Back in 2001 Semisonic went on hiatus before returning in 2017 with a series of shows. In between times singer and main songwriter Dan Wilson enjoyed a successful career as a songwriter and producer for the likes of Dixie Chicks and Adele, although found it hard to write songs for Semisonic. It was only when he met Liam Gallagher in 2017 with the prospect of writing songs with Gallagaher that Wilson found inspiration for Semisonic again. Though ultimately he and Gallagher did not work together, Wilson felt that the songs he set out to write for Gallagher were more suitable for Semisonic instead. Over the next two years, Wilson, along with his bandmates John Munson and Jacob Slichter, recorded the five songs that comprise this EP.

Leading off with the title track and single – Semisonic’s first new music in twenty years – it sounds like the band have never been away. The vocals of Wilson are still strong and melodic, with an uplifting chorus to lift the spirits in these unsettled times.

‘All It Would Take’ is one of those tales of lost love the band seem to excel at, whilst ‘Basement Tapes’ is a feel good, up tempo number recalling a more halcyon time. Listen out for those ELO approved backing vocals, simply blissful.

‘Don’t Make Up Your Mind’ has a Byrds/Tom Petty jangle in the guitar, another possible single release. Made for radio as they say. The guitar distorts a bit for ‘Lightning’, the heaviest this band ever venture and a noisy high to finish the EP on.

It is so good to have them back, the only downside is it is just five songs, but quality over quantity any day of the week. It may have been twenty years since their last musical outing, but I am pleased to report Semisonic sound as good as they ever did. ****
