Album review: HUNTED BY ELEPHANTS – Carry On

HUNTED BY ELEPHANTS - Carry On

You can imagine: we receive so many promos from independent artists here at GRTR! and many, sadly, have to be jettisoned having never made the cut.

The second album from London-based rockers Hunted By Elephants had me searching for their album debut in 2019 – ‘Rise Of The Elephant’ – amongst a small number of salvaged promos (yes we do keep some of them!).

The latest offering may be a step onward and upward.  Ten songs inspired by 1970s heavy rock.  The early single  ‘Let Me Be’ impresses with its Sabbath-esque riff and bodes well for the retro rock fest to come.

On ‘Carry On’ there are some nice harmony guitars recalling prime-time Lizzy.  ‘Wiseman’ introduces some organ to the mix, a feature which the band might have expanded on with a dedicated keyboard player, maybe in the future?  There are shades of early Deep Purple.

But the band are not afraid to mix things up with a sprinkling of acoustic guitar in the otherwise riffage-heavy ‘The Weapon’ and  the jazzy ‘Ghost Song’.

‘Keep On Giving Me Loving’ is a more upbeat rocker that will go down well live when the band can extricate themselves (and us) from Lockdown.

The seven minute ‘Towards The Light’ could have been the band’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ but sadly it doesn’t seem to go anywhere.  Maybe a grower?

Normal service is resumed with ‘Believe In Something’ a good slice of bluesy rock and the closing track ‘Take Me Away’.

The band have gone to some lengths to make this album organically with all performing in the same studio.  Yes, it’s retro but very well done with the strength of the songwriting shining through.  This is definitely a band to watch out for in 2021.  And, yes, I’m still searching out that first album.  ****
