EP review: BLACKMORE’S NIGHT – Here We Come A-Caroling

Blackmore's Night

Edel/EarMUSIC [Release date 04.12.20]

Blackmore’s Night have been around since 1997, founded by Ritchie Blackmore and Candice Night to stage their mutual love for traditional medieval and folk-rock music. This seasonal EP is released ahead of the band’s next album ‘Nature’s Light’, which is due in spring 2021. In a further treat for Balckmore’s Night fans Edel plan to re-issue the band’s previous albums throughout next year.

The EP comes as a limited edition 10-inch translucent green vinyl and CD digipak, as well as being released on digital.

“Our music is an escape from the stress and pressure of modern times. Journey back through time with us, to a simpler, magical time where music enters your heart and soul.” We certainly all need this during 2020!

‘Here We Come A-Caroling’ has an air of Mike Oldfield about it, whilst ‘It Came Upon The Midnight Clear’ is a lovely bit of folk and Mr Blackmore adds acoustic guitar to the recorders that form the basis of the song’s music.

Candice Night has soothing singing voice, perfect for ‘Silent Night’ – this alone is worth getting the EP for – and ‘O Little Town Of Bethlehem’, which just about stays on the right side of twee.

It is only just over ten minutes in total, yet the four songs on here are a perfect musical addition to your Christmas playlists. ***1/2
