EP review: ICONIC EYE – Back From Beyond The Sun

ICONIC EYE – Back From Beyond The Sun

www.iconiceyemusic.com [Release date 04.12.20]

Iconic Eye formed back in 2016, although this latest line-up only includes one member from the start, guitarist/keyboards/songwriter Greg Dean. The rest of the line-up is Neil Hackett (lead guitar), Mike Dagnall (bass, backing vocals) and Jon Cooksey (drums).

The rhythm section have previously worked with the likes Bob Catley, Vega and Dante Fox, so plenty of musical experience in the line-up. The EP also marks the debut of Janey Smith, previously known as Janey Bombshell, as their new lead singer.

Five songs on this EP certainly show off the vocal talents of Janey Smith – Lee Aaron meets Leigh Matty of Romeo’s Daughter. The title track taps into the band’s heavier side to great effect, as does their beefed up version of the Jefferson Starship classic ‘Jane’. A good choice of cover by the band.

The more melodic/AOR sound comes through on ‘Ghost Town’, a song that has plenty of keys mixed into the guitar riffs. The chorus reminded me of FM and is the pick of the EP for me. ‘Have My Day’ again sees the keys and guitars working together nicely. ‘Femme Fatale’ has the band back in full hard rock mode, like a female fronted Vega!

Pardon the awful pun but keep an eye on Iconic Eye as they have the songs and talent to make a splash in the world of hard rock and melodic rock. A band who would thrive on the festival circuit I am sure. ****
