Interview: GRAVE DIGGER (Chris Boltendahl)

…sound like Grave Digger, thank you very much” (laughs).   Well, with the exception of the keyboard player, Marcus Kiep, who joined the band in 2014, the rest of you have been playing together for a good seven years now, which is a long enough time to help you develop a certain chemistry. Chris: Yes, the rest of the band has been together for almost eight years, while the core members have been playing together for more than twenty years and… Continue reading

Gig review: MARCUS MALONE BAND – The Beaverwood Club, Chislehurst, 1 June 2017

MARCUS MALONE BAND – The Beaverwood Club, Chislehurst, 1 June 2017

…y an audience with them into other musical spheres without losing their interest. No such problems tonight with Marcus Malone and his wonderful eight-strong band. Focussing his set on his splendid ‘A Better Man’ album,  the show flows like a cascading mountain river dragging everything in its wake, as Marcus’s soulful phrasing, rock and roll intensity, colourful showmanship and strong material makes for an impeccable dynamic. He… Continue reading

Quick plays: ADRENALINE RUSH, BLOOD COMMAND, LIGHT FREEDOM REVIVAL

ADRENALINE RUSH Soul Survivor

…indh (lead guitar) and Joel Fox (bass) joining existing band members Tave, Alexander Hagman (rhythm guitar) and Marcus Johansson (drums). Erik Martensson is still involved on the production side of things, along with Marten Wanning and three of the songs on here are penned by the Blood Red Saints duo of Pete Godfrey and Lee Revill. I was not overly taken by the debut album, however this album is step up for me as it is more metal sounding in feel… Continue reading

Gig review: BLUES EXPLOSION – Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, London, 26 February 2017

…ight and the band performed very much as an eight piece ensemble, showcasing diverse talents, styles and moods. Marcus Bonfanti led the first few numbers. He is a blues guitarist/vocalist of some repute, with a couple of solo albums under his belt already. I saw his raw performance at the Borderline a couple of years ago, promoting the album ‘Shake The Walls’. Tonight was a more cultured and refined guitar display, complementing, rather than domi… Continue reading

MARCUS MALONE – A Better Man

Redline Music [Release date 30.03.17] ‘A Better Man’ is UK based, Detroit blues rocker Marcus Malone’s 8th album. Gig review: JUST SAY YES/ARFM MELODIC ROCK FUNDRAISER – The Spot, Derby, 28 January 2017

VEGA - Melodic Rock Fundraiser - The Spot, Derby, 28 January 2017

…he standout ‘Who We Are’ track, ‘Every Little Monster’, then ‘Gonna Need Some Love Tonight’ with lead guitarist Marcus Thurston put through his paces in tasty fashion. Nick Workman is one of the best frontmen around, constantly bouncing  on his toes and radiating confident energy,  and despite the limitations of six of them cramming onto a small stage the rest of the band were as animated on stage as I have seen them. Vega have stripped the genre… Continue reading

Gig review: STATUS QUO – The Hydro, Glasgow, 20 December 2016

STATUS QUO – The Hydro, Glasgow, 20 December 2016

…he Quo class of 2016 to entertain us, so let’s get the party started! It falls to Parfitt’s replacement, Richie Malone, to crank out the opening chords, no pressure then, and as he battered out the opening to ‘Caroline’ any fears soon evaporated. In fact, tonight’s show proved to be one of the liveliest Quo Christmas shows I have witnessed in years, having the younger guys on stage looks to have invigorated the rest of the band. Francis Rossi in… Continue reading

STATUS QUO - Parc Y Scarletts, Llanelli, 27 August 2016

…d the vocal” that I missed Ricky the most. There is no question that Parfitt’s replacement, Ritchie Malone, has all the chops so from the opening bars of Caroline to the jammed out “Bye, Bye….”, you can close your eyes and you’re back in your happy place. Parfitt’s vocal duties are fairly admirably handled by Rhino Edwards and Andy Bown but there was always something special about the Rossi/Parfitt vocal… Continue reading

STATUS QUO - Parc Y Scarletts, Llanelli, 27 August 2016

…y everyone screaming and cheering, whilst a burst of white spotight lit up Rick Parfitt’s stand-in Richie Malone who belted out the opening bars of ‘Caroline’.  Right on queue, the place went nuts. Francis Rossi, prowled the stage making eye contact with as many people as possible before having to get to his mic stand to sing, decked out in trademark white shirt and black waistcoat. No matter what anyone thinks of The Quo, they… Continue reading

Gig review: VEGA – Islington Academy, London, 30 May 2016

VEGA - Islington Academy, London, 30 May 2016

…Some Love Tonight’ climaxed with some spot on backing vocals and a typically fluid, effortless guitar solo from Marcus Thurston. New single ‘Every Little Monster’ had an irresistible steam hammer of a hook. With four albums now to choose from, a near hour and a half set, and a refreshing absence of solos or other padding, there was plenty of scope for everyone’s favourites to be heard. They chose to focus exclusively on uptempo songs and, while t… Continue reading

Album review: VEGA – Who We Are

The Best of 2016 - Melodic Rock

…and ‘If Not You’ seem even bigger. In their early days, guitar solos were seen as a tad old hat, but this time Marcus Thurston is given full scope for some fluid breaks, notably on ‘We Got it All’  that are a trademark of their live performance. In short, they have moved closer to the melodic rock mainstream. Despite a couple of bland fillers like ‘Ignite‘, after a few listens I rate this at least on a par with 2014’s excellent ‘Stereo Messiah’…. Continue reading

MAGNUM - The Tramshed, Cardiff, 12 May 2016

…new fans tonight. New album opener ‘Explode’ is the obvious choice to start things off tonight with Marcus Thurston’s opening riff exploding into an bombastic slice of melodic rock of the highest quality filled with masses of backing vocals before going straight into set stalwart ‘Kiss Of Life’ with it’s clap along drum beat provided by Dan Chantrey before vocalist Nick Workman coaxes the crowd into singing the… Continue reading

Album review: SINBREED – Master Creator

SINBREED – Master Creator

…Schulz and Blind Guardian drummer Frederik Ehmke. A slight spanner has been thrown in the works with guitarist Marcus Siepen (also Blind Guardian) parting ways with the band shortly before the release date. “Shadows” was very efficient power metal but lacked any real variation. “Master Creator” kicks off in a similar vein with Creation Of Reality with its relentless drums and a very classic Helloween sound. Things pass in a blur and before you k… Continue reading

JOHNNY HATES JAZZ - Darwen Library Theatre, 4 March 2016

…ocals) Alex Reeves (drums) and with Nocito playing bass it was like they’d never been away.  Blues rocker Marcus Bonfanti was perhaps the biggest surprise in the line-up on guitar and, if he didn’t actually fit the band’s clean cut image, he compensated with some deft rhythm playing. There was always a certain soulfulness and musicality in the band that enabled them to transcend their era and Datchler commanded his audience from… Continue reading

Gig review: FM/Vega – Guildhall, Gloucester, 7 November 2015

FM - Guildhall, Gloucester, 7 November 2015

…as got his stage craft mastered and with a voice to back it up he provides a focal point for the band, and with Marcus Thurston on lead guitar showing amazing dexterity and fluidity in his solos especially on ‘Gonna Need Some Love Tonight’. Vega had their share of fans in the crowd tonight and for those who hadn’t heard them before then I am pretty sure they left with a few more fans judging by the applause at the end of their s… Continue reading

Gig review: ROCKINGHAM FESTIVAL – Rock City, Nottingham, 23-25 October 2015

Santa Cruz - Rockingham Festival, Nottingham, 23-25 October 2015

…eo Messiah was represented by the title track and ‘Gonna Need Some Love Tonight’ which saw rapid fire guitarist Marcus Thurston showing his paces and ‘Hands In The Air’ closed a superb set, being as sing-along as the title would suggest. However I felt slightly uneasy as it remains a mystery why they haven’t broken bigger beyond this relatively narrow scene and a fourth album could be now or never on that front. Back to more Swedes with Last Autu… Continue reading

Interview: HENRIK DANHAGE (Evergrey) – June 2015

Henrik Danhage - Evergrey

…stop as it was not a fun thing to do anymore, you know?  I hated it! Then, I did one show with the guys because Marcus (note: Jidell – guitars) couldn’t do it and I remember thinking to myself “alright, this was fun” and all. It made me realise how much I missed hanging out with the guys, so when Hannes (note: Van Dahl – drums) joined Sabaton and Marcus left right after him Jonas and I started having meetings with the rest of the band. We had to… Continue reading

LOST SONGS: THE BASEMENT TAPES CONTINUED

…project that has spawned an album and a DVD that premieres ‘new’ Dylan material. So it is that Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons), Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops) Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and producer T Bone Burnett, set about interpreting apparently forgotten Dylan lyrics. ‘The Lost Songs’ is similar to the Bob Weir tribute to Jerry Garcia and Billy Bragg’s Woody Guthrie album, albeit… Continue reading
