Album review : DEICIDE – Bible Bashers (3 CD Retrospective)

Dissonance/Cherry Red [Release date: 24.02.23]

The first of the 3 CDs in this Deicide set, InsinerateHymn (fabulous title), was the band’s fifth album, released in 2000.

The band, led by bassist/ writer/ singer, Glen Benton, had made their not inconsiderable reputation on the back of a series of innovative, impactful Death Metal albums and road shows. No Christian beliefs had been left unoffended. No Holy Ground had been left unsullied. Their music did what it said on the coffin.

InsinerateHymn was something of a departure.

What we got were real tunes and narratives that could be followed and understood. The blasphemy, the violence, the intensity were all dialled down.

To be sure, Benton still growled and grunted his way through each track, his caustic lyrics surrounded on all sides by armour plated riffs, but this album was a small step nearer convention.

‘Bible Basher’ is probably Benton’s magnum opus. The howling, bulldozing ‘Suffer Again’ and ‘Refusal Of Penance’, aren’t far behind.

The titles of the other two CDs, Satan Lives On, and The Devil Rides On pay more than a passing resemblance to those of early 20th century novels by Denis Wheatley.

No coincidence. His novels brought Satan out of the shadows.

The first is a recording of the band’s live gig at the Chicago House Of Blues in 1998. It’s a focused, carefully channelled performance. The band had a sizeable hardcore fanbase in Chicago… and they got what they wanted. Heavy Metal as an emotional power, disturbing, lyrical, technical, dark in places, light in (very few) others. ‘Dead But Dreaming’, ‘Serpents Of The Light’ and the ever popular ‘When Satan Rules His World’ stood out, each getting the reception it deserved.

Third CD in this set is the band’s In Torment In Hell. It came in 2001, a year after InsinerateHymn.

It’s not what we expected. That previous album seem to provide a pointer to the band’s less intense future. Apart from the title track, ‘Christ Don’t Care’ and ‘Vengeance Is Mine’, the reports that Roadrunner Records rushed the band into recording and finishing in record time seems entirely credible.

Two out of three ain’t bad? ***

Album review: CREYE – Weightless

Frontiers [Release date 17.02.23]

After a commercially unsuccessful debut album, it was the addition of August Rauer as vocalist in 2018 that kick started Creye’s career as a melodic rock band.

On the downside, Weightless, their third album, is filled with thematically unimaginative songs, most of which have their fists permanently pumping the air, exhorting us to stand up for truth, justice and etcetera.

But strongly in their favour, the album is brimful of appealingly infectious melodic rock, very much in the Eurorock style of H.E.A.T., Work Of Art and Eclipse.

Rauer seems equally comfortable whispering sweet nothings on ‘Glorious’ and ‘Heading For Venus’ as he does on the heavier stuff.

His quivering voice is particularly striking as it picks up some muscle on the title track, ‘Weightless’ and on ‘Air’. Each song is positioned well inside the lyrical theme of the album, but both carry enough punch to break out of that self imposed lyrical straight jacket.

‘One Step Away’ and ‘Spreading Fire’ could’ve been huge melodic rock songs for today’s audience, but their dependence on formula undercuts their impact. There’s only so much chasing the dream you can take. ***

Album review: WILL POUND & JENN BUTTERWORTH – Volume 1

Bandcamp [Release date 24.02.23]

Two of the finest instrumentalists in traditional music combine to produce an album full of musical wonders. Jenn Butterworth won the  2019 Scots Trad Music Awards Musician of the Year accolade while Will Pound has been nominated for the Musician of the Year title at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award no less than three times.

Both have been involved in an array of projects and collaborations – Jenn as a member of Scotland’s Kinnaris Quintet and as one of the Songs of Separation project’s 10-strong female line-up – their release won Best Album at the 2017 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Will played harmonica on the Hillsborough charity single, joining a line-up of pop and football stars, on the 2012 Christmas number on ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ and has featured on two Robbie Williams’ albums.

Jenn sings on the Peggy Seeger cover ‘There’s Better Things’, proving she has vocal talents to add to her guitar playing. Will’s harmonica playing gives the tune some added bounce. Then for something completely different the duo take on Handel’s ‘The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’. Wonderfully done via melodeon and acoustic guitar, a delight on the listener’s ears and easy to see why this was an encore at their duo shows.

The harmonica and melodeon playing of Will Pound complements the guitar of Jenn Butterworth perfectly and their time performing together on tour certainly shows in the natural flow of the music, none more so than on ‘Speedy’ (a mix of two traditional tunes). Amazing to think this whole album was recorded live in just two days.

Amongst the traditional tunes are a few penned by Will Pound, including ‘Bourrees’, which feature Will on melodeon backed by Jenn on guitar.

A perfect listen to unwind too and immerse yourself in. Best news is as the title suggests this is the first volume and we will get at least another volume! ***1/2

Album review: TEENAGE GLAMPAGE – 80 Glambusters From The Seventies (4CD boxset)

Cherry Red [Release date 17.02.23]

Glamrock stamped its imprint on the UK Pop scene in the Seventies, and perhaps overstayed its welcome. But while it reigned supreme, it produced countless unforgettable pop songs.

This 4 CD anthology, Teenage Glampage, begins where you would expect.

On CD1, The UK’s towering giants of the era (and indeed of the genre), T Rex (Baby Strange), Wizzard (Ballpark Incident), and Mott The Hoople – more in a moment – lead the way in all their glittery, stack heeled magnificence.

And as well as these brand leaders, this first CD is chock a block with wannabe bands who rightly pressed their noses up against the shiny shop window of fame, desperate to gain entry.

One such prime suspect was Newcastle band, Geordie. Their second single ‘Can You Do It’, from their debut album, made the UK Top Twenty in 1973. It is featured here. Singer, Brian Johnson went on to front AC/DC some 5 years later after Geordie folded.

The Barron Knights’ serious minded pop single, ‘Turning My Back On You’ (from 1973), also gets a place here. The band bookended this release with many of their immensely popular parodies. But hey, you’ve got to go straight sometime.

But the truth is that Disc One (and perhaps the 4 disc set) belongs to one of the most re-unionised bands in showbiz, Mott The Hoople. The Ian Hunter song ‘Roll Away The Stone’ was the band’s third top twenty single (and biggest hit) from their 1973 album, The Hoople.

It epitomises rock’n’roll as the theatre side of Glam, with Ariel Bender’s strident riff and Hunters’ vocal swagger making the song instantly recognisable. It’s peak Mott.

In an era where the song titles themselves were a definition of the musical times, The Sweet’s ‘Teenage Rampage’ was truly in the moment. This track leads CD2.

Slik’s first single ‘The Boogiest Band In Town’ is here too. An historic step for a band on the cusp of huge popularity. Bill Martin and Phil Coulter had stopped writing for the Bay City Rollers (doesn’t make them bad people) and had moved onto Slik.

Cozy Powell’s ‘Na Na Na’, his third hit under the Cozy Powell’s Hammer banner is an historic addition. It was his last “solo” effort immediately preceding his stint with Rainbow.

Often referred to as “Junkshop Glam”, Coventry born Don Fardon’s single ‘Don’t Do That’ holds its own little place in history as a genre classic.

And there are many more of course, from headliners like Suzi Quatro, The Bay City Rollers, Hush, Barry Blue, Mud, Mungo Jerry, and equally many who didn’t quite make it, but left a lasting impression on the record buying public and music critics alike.

4 CDs, 80 tracks, Glamrock heaven. ****

News: ELEANOR McEVOY enters The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness in March 2023

ELEANOR McEVOY - Alexander's, Chester, 14 May 2017

Irish singer songwriter Eleanor McEvoy is the latest inductee to “The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness”.

The equivalent of the “Hall of Fame” the Grotto honours selected artists who have been covered consistently at rock website Get Ready to ROCK! over a period of 20 years.  The promotion is part of the website’s 20th anniversary celebrations and will feature a different artist or band each month in 2023.

Says Managing Editor David Randall: “We have reviewed Eleanor’s music since 2004 and she has retained a consistency and quality since that time as reflected in successive albums and gigs.  I’m not aware that other media have reviewed her work so extensively and our coverage has also included interviews.”

Singer songwriter Eleanor McEvoy first came to wider attention in 1992 when she was part of “A Woman’s Heart” compilation with Mary Black and other female Irish artists.

Signed to Geffen Records, she released her self-titled debut album in 1993. By the late 1990s, following the release of two more albums for Columbia and some success in the USA, she became disillusioned with the lack of interest (and investment) in her music by the label and – with the Internet offering new marketing channels – she became very much her own cottage industry.

A special feature will be published 1 March reflecting our coverage of Eleanor’s music over two decades.

From 18 February Eleanor embarks on her ‘Gimme Some Wine’ Tour in the UK.

EDITOR NOTE
So far this year “The Grotto” has welcomed The Darkness (January) and Chantel McGregor (February).  The GRTR!@20 promotion celebrates 20 years of the popular rock website Get Ready to ROCK!  The website’s archive of reviews and interviews will be highlighted as well as new features celebrating 20 years of activity.

The latest entrant in “The Grotto” was announced live on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio on Sunday 19 February.

Album review : FIRST SIGNAL – Face Your Fears

Frontiers [Release date 17.02.23]

Harry (Harem Scarem) Hess teams up this time with producer/writer, Michele Guiatoli, who has recently impressed us with his guitar and mixing desk skills on the Issa album, Lights Of Japan.

The last First Signal album was something of a disappointment, largely down to Daniel Flores’s milky production and Alessandro Del Vecchio’s unexciting songs.

Face Your Fears, appropriately, goes quite some way to correcting that.

Opener, ‘Unbreakable’ reminds us, as if we’ve forgotten, that Hess was the prime mover in the legendary Harem Scarem, at one time the genre’s great white hope.

Apparently Guiatoli challenged Hess … not necessarily to match his earlier HS high points, but make a truly great melodic rock album again.

Working in collaboration, the duo met the challenge head on, and here have delivered 11 tracks that sound fresh, exciting and powerful, overflowing with conviction in their ability as artists, and clearly filled with affection for their art.

‘Unbreakable’ is the first statement. It’s a hard hitting, compelling melodic rock song.

‘Face Your Fears’, ‘Never Let You Go’ and ‘Never Be Silenced’ are brimful of heart stopping hooks and aggressively infectious choruses.

Better than that, ‘Shoot The Bullet’s blessed chorus and ‘Rain For Your Roses’ beautiful chord shifts pick up where Harem Scarem left off with Weight Of The World in 2002. In your face, almost carelessly melodic, engaging, purposeful. When you get to this point you’re thinking that Hess is on a mission of some kind. Getting older, a family man. Plenty of steely guitar work, but there’s a warmth here, like there is something more going on.

The highly accessible ballad/ love song, ‘Always Be There’, confirms that notion, with Hess suggesting that he’s been there, done that, and is perfectly happy with where he is now… ‘you and me are forever’.

Nice way to sign off. ****1/2

Album review: MIKE KENEALLY – The Thing That Knowledge Can’t Eat

MIKE KENEALLY - The Thing That Knowledge Can’t Eat

Exowax Recordings [Release date 24.02.23]

Mike Keneally played keyboard and guitar with Zappa.  More recently he’s provided similar support to Satriani.  But on his latest solo album it’s the Zappa irreverence that comes out on the opening track ‘Logos’ which even has echoes of Todd Rundgren.  At other times – as on ‘Lana’ – there is a Crimson-esque pallor to the proceedings.  And maybe Keneally is even channelling inner-10cc on ‘Big Hit Song’.

The album was conceived and deployed via Keneally’s home studio which was crowd funded during Lockdown.  You get the feeling that he’s having a bit of a blast freed from any outside constraints and with various new toys at his disposal.

It’s all a bit of an acquired taste straddling fusion and the lighter side of prog. The true standouts might be the two instrumentals ‘Celery’ with Steve Vai (and a Tull-esque mid-riff) and the jazzy  ‘ACK’ which assembles a Dutch brass section.

‘The Carousel  Of Progress’ proggy credentials are bolstered by Gentle Giant’s Malcolm Mortimer on drums but the choppy rhythms also remind of Peter Banks and Flash.

Keneally followers will like this album but the casual listener may find the mish-mash of styles tough going.  ***

Album review – KHYMERA – Hold Your Ground

Frontiers [Release date 10.02.23]

Texas native, bassman and vocalist, Dennis (Pink Cream 69/Unisonic/Place Vendome/Sunstorm) Ward, transformed into a full blown front man with Khymera earlier this millennium.

The band membership is inclined to fluidity, but Ward has assembled a fine studio team around him here, with Eric Ragno on keys, Michael Klein on guitars, and drummer, Michael Kolar holding those rhythms down.

As a vocalist, he has considerable range, but his voice is not so distinctive.

And too often he falls victim of AOR formula. It’s a blueprint that worked well for so many bands in the 80s, and indeed, with some tweaks and innovative touches, it can and does work well today for some artists, albeit within the limitations of a still shrinking market for the genre.

That said, as an experienced musician who’se worked with the best, you’ve got to say that Ward knows how to mount a big production number, how to give a song a 3 dimensional sound, and how to give that song a dazzling shine.

So much so that too many songs are polished up to within an inch of their lives. Resulting in an inescapable blandness that the music finds impossible to break through.

And it starts off so well, with opener, ‘Don’t Wait For Love’s thrilling and genuinely spine tingling vocal arrangements, and the fast building, quickly climaxing melodic rock of ‘Firestarter’.

Ward steps away from his standard vocal style on ‘Hear Me Calling’, using rarely deployed high pitched, soulful vocal skills that we could have done with more of. This approach gives the songs the emotional impetus that’s missing elsewhere.

A couple of “sounds like” tracks hold the album together as we move into the second half. The softer rocking AOR sound of Survivor circa When Seconds Counts on ‘Sail On Forever’ and the DNA at the core of Heart’s ‘Alone’ is repurposed for emotional ballad, ‘Our Love Is Killing Me’.

Thereafter, we keep waiting for some truly magnificent AOR song to make its presence felt. But it doesn’t. **1/2

Album review: ROBIN MCAULEY – Alive

Frontiers Records [Release date 17.02.23]

Robin’s last album ‘Standing On The Edge’ was my top album of 2021 so this new release has a lot to live up to. However, with Robin you know that quality is assured and with the same backing band as on the last album the omens look good.

It only takes a listen to the title track which opens the album to know you are on to a winner. Great melodies and harmonies abound with Robin’s soaring vocal cutting through to the fore. ‘Dead As A Bone’ then kicks off with a great riff from Andrea Seveso on guitar and proves to be another great rocker.

The pace then drops slightly for ‘Bless Me Father’ which chugs along nicely to a huge chorus with a hook big enough to bring in Jaws! A discordant start to ‘Feel Like Hell’ leads into another big riff fest which then gives way to a great middle eight featuring top fret work from Seveso.

I do like a rocking ballad and ‘Can’t Go On’, which is up next, fits the brief perfectly. A big production with a strong vocal from Robin, this is an epic song. Completely over the top but all the better for it! ‘The Endless Mile’ then gets us rocking once more with a solid riff driven on by an excellent rhythm section.

There is a school of thought that a lot of Frontier albums have a very similar sound as most are produced by and feature Alessandro Del Vecchio. However, the production here is spot on, so Alessandro obviously knows his stuff. If it ain’t broken, why fix it?

The great production shines through on ‘Fading Away’ which has a crystal clear mix with all the players clearly audible and well balanced. ‘My Only Son’ has an interesting melody line and again Robin’s vocal delivery is the star of the show.

‘When The Time Has Come’ proves to be another melodic masterpiece, whilst ‘Stronger Than Before’ ups the heavy riffage rate substantially with Seveso’s dexterous fretwork impressing throughout. That just leaves ‘Who Am I’ to round off the album in rocking fashion.

So, does this new release reach the heady heights of ‘Standing On The Edge’? For me, not quite, but that is down to my opinion. However, this is a damn fine album with great songwriting and playing throughout topped off with Robin’s fantastic vocal. Come the end of the year list, this will be vying for the top spot without a doubt.  *****

Album review: LOVEBITES – Judgement Day

JPU Records [Release date 24.02.23]

I first became aware of Lovebites a few years back when they opened for Dragonforce. Not knowing the band’s musical leanings, I was very surprised that night at their blend of power and thrash metal which went down a storm with the Dragonforce crowd.

Following a short hiatus brought about by the departure of founding member and bassist Miho, the band are back with an album full of anthemic metal songs. All tracks are played at breakneck speed but with great song writing and musicianship throughout.

Opening track ‘We Are The Resurrection’ could be a nod to their recent downtime and line-up changes and it does prove the band have risen above the turmoil and are back with a bang. Opening with a big symphonic flourish the band then wade in at a furious pace. The playing throughout is first class with Miyako and Madori leading the way with a twin guitar attack which leads into a great melodic chorus. Stirring stuff!

The pace and melody continue with the title track of the album ‘Judgement Day’, this has a Middle Eastern feel to the keyboard melody which punctuates the song. Again, the riffage rate is phenomenal as is the drumming by Haruna. ‘The Spirit Lives On’ flashes past like a bullet train on greased rails whilst ‘Wicked Witch’ gallops along on a wave of bass that could take on Steve Harris at his best.

A dirty bass line then kicks off ‘Stand And Deliver (Shoot Them Down)’ which is pure metal harking back to the NWOBHM complete with a killer chorus. The dual guitars of Miyako and Madori are brought to the fore again for ‘Victim Of Time’ which also features an excellent vocal performance from Asami.

‘My Orion’ slows things down a bit and is a solid, straight forward rocker. This is probably the most accessible song on the album and is an obvious single. Normal service is soon resumed though with ‘Lost In The Garden’ which again gallops along on a chugging riff shot through with melody. The mid- section gives all the band a chance to shine which they do with aplomb.

We are then thrown back into thrash metal territory with ‘Dissonance’ which could well have come from an early Anthrax or Testament album, form an orderly pit for this one! Things are rounded off with ‘Soldier Stands Solitarily’ which would keep the pit spinning with more thunderous riffs and drumming.

If you like your music hard, heavy and shot through with melody and harmony then this is most definitely the album for you. If this is ‘Judgement Day’ for Lovebites then I would say they are doing just fine!  ****

Album review: THE HAYLEY GRIFFITHS BAND – Melanie

THE HAYLEY GRIFFITHS BAND - Melanie

Posh & Rock Records [Release date 20.01.23]

We first came across Hayley Griffiths when she fronted Karnataka for a time, including one studio album in 2015.  Her departure (with others) from that band was apparently acrimonious but she has dusted herself off and reconvened with the additional assistance of one time band-mates Cagri Tozluoglu (keys) and Jimmy Pallagrosi (drums).

When we reviewed Karnataka, with Hayley, we commented on the theatrical delivery and professionalism  she brought to proceedings – “a West End sheen” – and this remains present on the latest album. The bottom line has to be that the full flight metal of the title track is perhaps not so fitting of her vocal talents as a piece like ‘Made By Bed’ which is overtly commercial and sounds like it could have come from a musical.  Ditto ‘Little Star’.

We need to remember that Hayley was lead singer with Riverdance for several years and in Michael Flatley’s Lord Of The Dance.  Thank the Lord that she didn’t get roped into Flatley’s vanity project movie released last year. Have you seen it?!

At times there is an uncomfortable juxtaposition of Griffith’s trained vocals and the symphonic metal bombast and she seems more at ease when the pace slows and this can happen within the space of one song such as ‘Last Goodbye’.

The standout title track reflects Griffiths’ alter ego – a persona she used to adopt after experiencing stage fright and over analysing her stage performance.  The song brings out the album’s – and Hayley’s – rockiest delivery.  The longest song ‘Dust To Gold’ is the most proggy with a vocal contribution from Nick D’Virgilio.

A simultaneous release ‘Far From Here’ shows Hayley’s lighter, folksier side whilst Melanie in its CD form has bonus tracks previously released as singles.

Whilst there is the excitement of a new band configuration for Hayley, in truth it’s all a bit derivative.  A bit too lightweight in places for some, not enough metal for others.  However, easy on the eye as well as – in the main – on the ears, there’s still much to like here.  ***1/2

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023My first visit to the renamed Dingwalls since it changed name and ownership in 2020. The venue was near its 500-berth capacity for Robert Jon & The Wreck who have sold out a good few dates on this tour.

First up were Meghan Parnell and Dave Barnes from Bywater Call. The duo were performing as a sort of acoustic advance party for the full seven-piece, Toronto-based roots, rock and soul band who are touring the UK this Autumn. I’d heard only a handful of tracks by the full band before the show, so most of the music was new to me. The most striking aspect of the performance was the wonderful voice of Meghan Parnell. There’s a grainy undertow to her sweet, captivating and powerful range. She never missed a note in the searching glare of a stripped back set.

A cover of the Amy Winehouse’s immortal ‘Back To Black’ was an inspired choice for a Camden crowd, but a bold move too, given the affection for both the singer and the song. However, the delivery was never in doubt and this was a well-received, beautiful tribute.

Dave Barnes on acoustic and occasionally electric guitar, plus stomp box provided a good backdrop – though never more than that – for Parnell’s searching, soulful vocals. They ended with a tender, mournful ‘Bring Me Down’ and I made a mental note to be around for the band’s tour in October.

This was the third tour by Robert Jon & The Wreck since September 2021. Their popularity appears to be growing. Tonight the set was very different from the gig I saw back at the 100 Club 18 months previously, with a good few new-ish tracks making up the first half of the show. After a typically low-key arrival on-stage, opener, ‘Pain No More’ roared out of the PA, with fat riffs, distorted slide and a furious lead break.

The rockier, heavier sound was a feature of a good portion of the set. It emphasised the more freewheeling, boogie-driven elements of new material, released digitally over the last few months in what would have been called EPs back in the day. Certainly, ‘Come At Me’ with its infectious rolling riff, ‘She’s A Fighter’ featuring some wonderful percussive piano and the hard-driving ‘Are You Waiting For Your Man’ together brought a new level of intensity (and indeed volume) to the show.

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023

None of this is criticism. It was great to hear mainman Robert Jon Burrison on vocals and guitar smashing out some straight-ahead assertive choruses to complement his otherwise warm, rootsy delivery. These tracks provided a wonderful platform for Henry James on lead guitar to deliver breath-taking solos. He is one of the best live guitarists I have seen in a long time. The sound has also been reinforced by new keyboard player Jake Abernathie who, it seems, has been given licence to roam and ramble amongst the band’s live material much more than previous incumbents. He is a great addition to the line-up.

In amongst the early tracks, ‘Do You Remember’ stood out as a return to the more typically soulful, southern rock that characterises much of their sound. It is a lovely track, drawing inevitable references to the Allman Brothers where Burrison and James bring twin lead guitar melodies straight out of a fantasy ‘Jessica’ recording session.

Whilst we had been treated to a few excellent instrumental passages already, it was on ‘Rescue Train’ where the band really stretched out for the first time. James coming over stage left to trade some high quality slide guitar with Abernathie’s organ and keys, and who found some hints of The Doors in the extended passages.

‘High Time’ from the band’s eponymous 2018 release, brought a bit of psychedelia on the intro, before Andrew Espantman on drums/cheesy grins and Warren Murrel on bass/cool shades shot the track through with funky rhythm vibes.

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023

By contrast ‘Who Can You Love’ was a much more gentle, country-influenced new song, setting the scene nicely for the brilliant ballad ‘Gold’ and the first real crowd-pleasing, sing-a-long moments of the set. Burrison screwing up his face with emotion on the love-lost, bitter chorus, and James wringing out moving bursts of lead guitar. A real highlight.

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023‘Oh Miss Carolina’ kept the mood bubbling and it was noticeable how much more enthusiastic the crowd were for tracks they knew well. ‘Shine A Light On Me Brother’ capitalised on this with its gospel-infused, piano-coloured groove.

There was a sense in the animated room – now damp with condensation dripping from the ceiling (referred to by the band as ‘raining inside!’) that the gig was approaching its climax. Sure enough ‘Cold Night’ was unleashed on the crowd in its now anticipated long-form version, with an instrumental mini-opera so far removed from its 2015 version on ‘Glory Bound’ as to be unrecognisable. This is not so much a trademark rendition as a right of passage.

In previous live reviews of this band, I have tried to avoid describing ‘Cold Night’ as their ‘Freebird’ moment, but it is so hard to avoid comparing the twists, turns, pace changes and drama (rather than the actual notes and melodies) with that Skynyrd track. So there we are. I’ve done it again. James and Abernathie are brilliant together, bouncing off each other in waves of freestyle jamming. James’s solos become ever more breakneck and adrenaline fuelled until Burrison comes back in with the chorus and the breathless track is brought to a frantic finish.

Gig review: ROBERT JON & THE WRECK – Powerhaus, London, 11 February 2023

One encore and one track, but a lot more was going on than that makes it sound. Henry James emerged alone to blast out a preamble solo for ‘Last Light On The Highway’ that had a lot more to do with Led Zep than The Eagles. If you told me it was extracted and reconstructed from ‘Dazed and Confused’ I wouldn’t argue.

The rest of the band ambled back on stage and the song proper (technically ‘part 1’ and ‘part 2) unwound. Hearing this was a thrill. The album of the same name is probably my favourite, but this track is very different to anything else on the collection. It is a slow burner of acoustic/electric themes with poignant vocals, stacked backing vocals and dominant string arrangements. It was delivered beautifully here, stretched out and subtle. The band bringing everything it had, studded with more searing guitar from James. There were some progressive moments threaded through the track, and as a mate mentioned later, hints of UFO’s ‘Love to Love’. A stunning way to bring down the curtain.

Robert Jon & The Wreck are such a good band right now. Tonight, with Southern Rock credentials firmly embellished, they also brought a confidence and a coolness to try something new, mix up the set, and change the mood. Hallmarks of a top quality band in my book.

Album review: T3NORS – Naked Soul

Frontiers [Release date: 10.02.23]

So much of Frontiers’ melodic rock finds itself impervious to outside influences. There are few AOR albums from the label that have successfully taken on contemporary musical mores.

The truth is – we all claim to embrace change, when often what we really want is more of the same, only better.

And frankly that notion sets up this T3NORS’ album. The knowledge that the studio band is fronted by renowned-in-the-genre vocalists Robbie LeBlanc, Toby Hitchcock and Kent Hilli is enough to make AOR fans drool.

All 3 have gained deserved recognition for their vocal abilities and performances. Le Blanc with his own band, Blanc Faces, Hitchcock with Jim Peterik’s Pride Of Lions, and Hilli with Giant, after a brief apprenticeship with Perfect Plan.

The album smacks of collaboration and workshopping with producer Alessandro DelVecchio, until they got all the songs exactly right.

DelVecchio’s skillful orchestration of keys, guitars, voices and rhythms gives the music the rich feeling it gets when the artists are all on the same page.

And kicking off with the incredibly strong ‘April Rain’ was a good move. Hitchcock takes the lead, and soars. The song’s near perfect combination of heartfelt lyrics and heartstopping (if irritatingly familiar) hook, launches the album into orbit. A bold, anthemic beginning.

‘Torn’, ‘Stand For Love’ and ‘Silent Cries’ maintain the momentum, with the trio squeezing out every ounce of emotion, in true 3 tenors’ style, from the busy but clear as a bell arrangements.

The digital album has different versions of three of the key tracks. ‘April Rain’, ‘I Could’ and ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ as bonuses.

They’ve swapped around the lead vocalists on these three studio edits. This a smart and interesting idea. You can listen for yourself and see if the label made the right decisions in the first place.

One way or another, after a few spins you’ll be mainlining T3nors on a regular basis. ****

Album review: WIG WAM – Out Of The Dark

Frontiers [Release date 10.02.23]

Hard to believe Wig Wam began strutting their Glam/Classic Rock stuff two decades ago.Their flirtation with Eurovision is well documented, but the band’s post 2014 downtime gap is not. What we do know is that the band reformed around 2020, and that Out Of The Dark is the second album since the comeback.

All comebacks should be like this. The new album is a whirlwind of caustic comments, sinewy melodies and shout it out loud choruses. It’s a sharp tongued observation of life and the characters who populate their world.

The title and opening track itself is a muscular, four and a half minute joyride, rising on a rush of ringing guitars, twisting through several heartstopping melodic moments, landing eventually on a massive hook of a chorus.

The production and arrangements ensure the engagingly melodic components and tribal chants of songs like ‘High’n'Dry’ and ‘Forevermore’ get as much focus as the volcanic riffage and the punchy, pulsing rhythms.

Thereafter, picking the standouts will be the subject of much debate.

‘Uppercut Shazam’s sensory overload of glam rock and metal, and ‘Ghosting You’, a hook heavy rock song, with the street smart pop sensibilities of a long past magical mystery tour, undoubtedly make them contenders.

Yet, ‘Bad Luck Chuck’s juicy barroom stomp and the fiercely dramatic, Bowie-esque love story, ‘The Purpose’ push them, arguably, to the front of the queue.

Having so much high calibre stuff to choose from here will delight discerning melodic rock fans. And finishing with the sea shanty rock of ‘Sailor And The Desert Sun’, a song full of clanging, spiralling guitars, dancing hornpipes and stack heeled choruses, might just be the one to confound us all. ****1/2

Gig review: BOTH SIDES NOW: Homage to the Songs of Joni Mitchell – The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, Wednesday 8 February 2023

Without doubt one of the finest and most influential songwriters and performers of the past six decades, Joni Mitchell has a unique style that has seen countless music fans fall under her spell. Since her debut performing in local clubs in 1962 she’s gone on to conquer the world, much feted and admired by both her peers and the public alike.

With a string of critically acclaimed albums to her name, Mitchell became one of the most recognised figures in Folk, her ability to mix in elements of Jazz and Pop, along with her own beautifully crafted lyrics, meaning that she crossed genres with natural ease and gained a wide fanbase.

With her last album of new material, her 17th, released in 2005 and a cessation of touring which was exacerbated by health issues, little has been seen of her over the past few years. The flame has still burned brightly though and her unannounced appearance at the Newport Folk Festival last year was an emotional return to the stage.

With a wonderful synchronicity, new production ‘Both Sides Now: An Homage to the Songs of Joni Mitchell’ has been launched onto the scene and it’s a thing of rare and dazzling beauty.

With a stellar collection of vocalists and some of the best session musicians around, what started off as an instrumental take on ‘A Case of You’ birthed an album and now this scintillating live show that breathes new life into these much-loved songs.

This is no attempt to directly copy the style of Mitchell in minute detail but instead each performer pays heartfelt tribute to the superstar, adding their own colours and favouring to the mix, cherry picking some of the many highlights of her career.

With its appearance at the high vaunted and perfectly acoustic surroundings of Bury St Edmunds venue The Apex, those present were treated to an evening that will long last in the memory.

Sliding into the set, band leader and bass player Stefan Redtenbacher led his troupe into a cooly funked up ‘Big Yellow Taxi’, the guitar work of Carter Arrington a joy and the dreamy ‘I Don’t Know Where I Stand’ wrapped the hall in a wave of feel-good warmth.

Hearing these songs stripped of their familiar vocals as the instruments fill in is an unusual prospect but one that soon becomes perfectly crafted, the deftness of the playing never eschewing feel for technicality.

Mitchell’s material has always had such a strong, soulful core and first vocalist up, Mim Grey, put in her own nuanced and passionate talents to great effect, her voice on the evocative ‘Night Ride Home’ and an utterly bewitching ‘Two Grey Rooms’ just perfect, her phrasing wonderful.

With Mike Mayfield taking over on vocals and piano whilst keys player Pete Billington switched to Hammond, Mitchell’s arguably most famous track ‘Both Sides Now’ morphed from its gentle acoustic start to something a little fuller, the dynamics bring a heady rush of euphoria.

It was a question as to whether bringing out such a big hitter so early in the set was going to cause the rest to be an anti-climax but when Jana Varga joined Mayfield for the constant ebb and flow of ‘Don’t Interrupt The Sorrow’ it became obvious that things were only just starting to get warmed up.

A twenty-four-hour notice replacement for Covid victim Jo Harman, Varga was a revelation, her voice having the same purity of the late, great Karen Carpenter and when mixed with Mayfield’s the complimentary, yet different tones brought their own delightful sound.

Able to mix the aching with the sensuous and playful, Varga was able to turn the wooden panelled surrounds into a cathedral of beautiful noise and when Mayfield and Grey returned to join her in a uplifting ‘Our House’, the Graham Nash penned hit had never sounded quite so glorious.

Elsewhere, curveballs were thrown in as the jazz funk of ‘My Old Man’ got feet moving and heads nodding, the drums of Mike Sturgis adding swing and groove and the dualling fretwork of Mayfield and Carter Arrington brought a slightly blues rock edge to proceedings.

Highlights kept coming, from the big, soulful vocals by Grey on ‘Little Green’ the singers power displayed as she moved the microphone nearer and further away to the almost Folk-Prog of ‘Free Man In Paris’ it was something of an embarrassment of riches.

With the epic climax of ‘Woodstock’ and inevitable encore of ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ closing the evening in euphoric style, this truly was a salute to an extraordinary talent by some extraordinary talent.

Doing exactly what a good homage should do in making you want to dig out and rediscover the joys of Mitchell’s back catalogue, the evening had the dual result of a growing appreciation for all those who had poured their hearts out on stage that evening bringing these songs to sublime life. Joni would have loved it.

Album review: MOTORHEAD – Bad Magic: SERIOUSLY BAD MAGIC

Silver Lining Music [Release date 24.02.23]

“If the guys wanted to prove a point with this record then they have achieved that goal and then some. ‘Aftershock’ was a great album but with ‘Bad Magic’ Lemmy, Phil and Mikkey have upped the ante yet again. Motorhead are back, larger and louder than ever and as Paul Daniels used to say,”That’s magic!”

That was the closing paragraph from my review back in August 2015 when Bad Magic was unleashed to the world. The album found Motorhead in great form and despite Lemmy’s health issues at that point he was still rocking hard and heavy. Tracks like ‘Victory Or Die’ and ‘Shoot Out All Of Your Lights’ easily stood shoulder to shoulder with timeless classics in the band’s back catalogue, in short it was one hell of an album!

Fast forward eight years and the album is now being re-released with a few tasty additions to further enhance the original 12 tracks on the album. Of most interest are the two new tracks, both of which were recorded during the ‘Bad Magic’ recording sessions.

First up is ‘Bullet In Your Brain’ which is a full pelt rocker and is excellent. It is testament to the quality of the songs on ‘Bad Magic’ that such a good track was left off the final cut. A great riff from Phil Campbell drives the track tying in nicely with Mikkey Dee’s relentless drumming. The mid-section is interesting as it breaks the track down and allows all the band to show off their bountiful talents, especially Lemmy’s pummelling bass line.

The other new track is ‘Greedy Bastards’, a scathing comment on politicians by Lemmy. The song opens with a spoken passage from Lemmy giving his unvarnished opinion of politicians and politics in general. This then leads into a slow paced, heavy track with lyrics which continue Lemmy’s social comment and his uncompromising views. Lemmy was always one to speak his mind and he leaves the listener in no doubt of his feelings here!

The other additional tracks are both cover versions. The first is of the Rolling Stones ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ which is quite faithful to the original, but with an added layer of threat and malevolence. With great drumming from Dee and a rumbling bassline the song takes on a darker note, add in Lemmy’s trademark growl and you have a solid Motorhead stamp on the Stones’ classic.

The other cover is of the Bowie classic ‘Heroes’. Again, not too far removed from the original but given the full ‘Head treatment. Phil Campbell lets loose with a great solo mid-song and overall this is an excellent version.

In addition to the extra tracks this re-release also includes a full live set from the ‘Aftershock’ tour. The set captures the band live at the Mt Fuji Rock Festival in July 2015 and from Lemmy’s opening line of ‘We are Motorhead and we play rock n roll’ to the closing, bombastic bars of ‘Overkill’ it’s a great reminder of just how good Motorhead were live.

The set contains many Motorhead classics along with a few later numbers and, whilst its possibly not the best live ‘Head show ever committed to record, it captures the moment and the atmosphere well.

Highlights of the set include ‘Stay Clean’, ‘Doctor Rock’ and ‘Going To Brazil’. It is though the closing one/two of ‘Ace Of Spades’ and ‘Overkill’ that really bring the memories flooding back. Motorhead in full flight were a force of nature with Lemmy in full command of the unstoppable, six legged rock machine. Crank this album up to 11 and remember the good times…

This re-release is well deserved as ‘Bad Magic’ was a great swansong to one of rock’s greatest bands. The addition of the extra tracks and the live set are just the icing on the cake and it all adds up to a great package. Serious Bad Magic indeed!  *****

EP review: SEAMUS FOLEY – Into The Night

Seamus Foley

Website [Release date 24.02.23]

Séamus Foley releases a six song EP and as Séamus explains, “This EP came about after I recorded the single (of the same name) remotely during lockdown. I realised I wanted to further explore these ways of recording, which were new to me, to see where this group of songs could go.

All the songs on this recording deal with struggle in some form, whether complex feelings of loss or longing or more simple affairs like the call of the road or having writer’s block. I’ve always been amazed when a song I hear manages to articulate something that I’ve been feeling, and that’s a piece of magic that I’d love to be able to embed in my work: to capture a feeling that people can relate to.”

Joining him on this EP are CJ Hillam (pedal steel guitar, guitar), Lee Smith (drums), Tom Collison (piano & Hammond organ) and Stuart Taylor (bass). Seamus himself is no musical slouch performing guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.

Although only six songs, the EP covers much musical ground from the acoustic folk of ‘Black & White’ through to ‘Ground’, which features sublime pedal steel and piano playing.

‘Colorado Skies’ has been released as a lead track and rightly so as it is a radio friendly piece of Americana. The title track is a soothing mix of country topped by the easy on the ear vocals of Seamus Foley. Any of the six songs on here could be released as singles as they all have their own unique appeal and most importantly, strong melodies and lyrical content.

A finely crafted  and highly enjoyable piece of Americana that shows an artist at the peak of his musical powers. ****

Album review: BRIAN TARQUIN & HEAVY FRIENDS – Brothers In Arms

BRIAN TARQUIN & HEAVY FRIENDS - Brothers In Arms

BHP Music/Guitar Trax Records [Release date 03.02.23]

Yes I wasn’t too kind to guitarist Mike Campese when reviewing his album ‘Reset’. But you only have to listen to Brian Tarquin’s latest offering to understand how a guitar based album should be done.

True, Tarquin has enlisted several “heroes” but essentially he’s the man who has played most of the instruments, written the songs, and engineered.

So we get Satriani on opener ‘Speed Of Sound’ and a rather tasty ‘Kiss My Axe’ with Vinnie Moore letting rip over a nice riffy rhythm.  The groove is repeated on ‘Black Widow’ with Travis Stever (Coheed & Cambria) and ‘Saigon Sally’ with Tangerine Dream’s Gerald Gradwohl.

‘Bumblefoot’ Thal shows his metal on ‘Luxor’ whilst latter-day Dokken plank spanker Alex De Russo embellishes the more majestic ‘Devil’s Tombstone’.

Tarquin has come to our attention previously often putting together themed compilations.  He’s an accomplished writer for TV and film (this is reflected on the orchestrated ‘Hounds Of Hell’) and described as a jazz guitarist.  His last release, in 2019, was ‘Smooth Jazz Café’.

I am sure he could have just released this album in his own right without the allure of name artists.  But, having done so, it does add a bit of spice and you can play “spot the soloist.” Although the liner detail does help.

What this album has in droves is good taste, knowing when to hold back, and knowing when to let rip.  Perhaps a few more slow burn tunes would have sealed the deal, but – all told – the way a guitar based rock album should sound.  ***1/2

Album review: UFO – No Heavy Petting (Remaster)

Album review: UFO – No Heavy Petting (Remaster)

Chrysalis Records [Release date 20.01.23]

Re-issues and re-masters are two-a-penny and often there’s marginal benefit in penning a review, much less making an actual purchase. This album was previously remastered in 2007. I have, though, been impressed with the series that Chrysalis is putting together for UFO. Super-deluxe (their words, not mine!) versions of ‘Phenomenon’ appeared in 2019, an out of synch ‘Strangers in the Night’ in 2020 and then ‘Force It’ in 2021. Now, the band’s (arguably) least celebrated studio album from their classic period, ‘No Heavy Petting’, has been given the full makeover treatment.

Originally released in May 1976, the album was the last of three produced by Leo Lyons before Ron Nevison brought a more modern, slicker, sharper sound for 1977’s ‘Lights Out’. And with it came a better level of success.

NHP sometimes fares poorly in comparison with its harder-rocking, raw-sounding predecessor ‘Force It’. I’d argue that the material is equally strong, but that the production was a bit woolly, a bit muddy, a bit lack-lustre. For instance, the original versions of ‘Natural Thing’ and ‘I’m A Loser’ were transformed into vibrant, scintillating tracks on the live album ‘Strangers In The Night’ (even though we now know that Nevison made UFO record a new version of the former to fit the double album format better).

Sure, the band were a more confident outfit by 1978, but those tracks were still gold in 1976. What Andy Pearce has done with this superb remaster is to strip away that wool and mud to unearth the energy, power and excitement at the heart of this album. This is no feather-duster polish up. This is a full deep clean. A veritable colonic irrigation. (Is that a bit much?)

‘Can You Roll Her’ simply sets the pulse racing. That beefed up Andy Parker double-bass drum pattern is worth the ticket price alone. The guitar-fest of ‘Reasons Love’ sounds fresh and Michael Schenker’s solo grabs you by the scruff of the neck.

But step forward Danny Peyronnel. Added to the line-up as keyboard player for this album only, the former Heavy Metal Kid has finely been given his moment in the sun. The brilliant ‘Highway Lady’ is powered as much by his belligerent playing as it is by Michael Schenker’s fat riffs and gorgeous tone or Pete way’s bubbling bass. Peyronnel wrote the track and it is simply electric. I am breathless listening to it again in this shape.

Elsewhere, Peyronnel  lifts the ballad ‘Belladonna’ and paves the way for some of UFO’s more ambitious ballad compositions on subsequent albums. He adds newly highlighted percussive colour to the infectious Frankie Miller cover ‘A Fool In Love’ where the remaster brings Parker’s intricate drumming to the fore. ‘Martian Landscape’ is still a weird one. A three part mini-epic of tremulous Peyronnel piano/Mogg vocals giving way to something of an oompah band vibe before the climatic chorus.

But I’ve saved the best til last. ‘On With The Action’ was always a stone cold classic of crawling lead guitar, dirty keyboard/riff undertow and Mogg’s brilliant lyrical depiction of seedy urban life. Pearce has brought a new fluidity and clarity to track, toning down the previously overwrought backing vocals and providing a grand-standing platform for the best Schenker solo on the album.

In terms of new material, there is precious little here that has not previously seen the light of day. The 2007 re-issue included most of the bonus material also found on this new version, albeit now remastered again.

Of these, Mogg’s soulful vocals on the Small Faces’ ‘All Or Nothing’ alongside Schenker’s fuzzy guitar boogie is a thing of joy. ‘French Kisses’ is pretty lightweight but fizzes along pleasantly and features one of those clear, mid-tone solos that Schenker is famed for. Peyronnel is actually less percussive on this number and plays the keys in a much more jaunty style than on the album proper.

‘Have You Seen Me Lately Joan’ is a bit of an oddity with its curious lyric and gravel-voiced delivery from Mogg. The spare, country-tinged acoustic demo of this is the only previously unreleased track on the package.

The bonus material is completed by mid-paced rocker ‘Tonight Tonight’ and the mournful ‘All The Strings’, heavily featuring Peyronnel’s talents on electric piano and organ. They all sound better than on the 2007 version, though it’s hard to imagine that any of them would have been contenders for the original album.

The live material has also been released before. It comes from The Roundhouse in 1976.  It is a great benchmark of the band’s sound at the time. The introduction of keyboards moved the band forward and some of Peyronnel’s playing is very Jerry Lee Lewis/rock ‘n’ roll.

Listen out for a rare outing for Phil Mogg’s acoustic guitar on ‘I’m A Loser’, effectively pointing the way to a combined guitar/keys player for future incarnations of the band. This recording does not find the band in as polished or slick state as later, but you can see where they were going with the emerging arrangements of ‘Rock Bottom’ and ‘I’m A Loser’. They, of course, became live staples at the expense of older material like ‘C’mon Everybody’ and ‘Boogie For George’ that close this set.

The 2CD deluxe digipak edition comes with a poster booklet and features the remastered album and five bonus tracks on disc one plus this Roundhouse live set on CD 2. A 3LP clear vinyl edition has the album on LP 1 and the live set on the other two records. Michael Hann provides extensive liner notes.

How can I do anything other than give this already great album a super-deluxe 5 out of 5? I can’t wait for ‘Lights Out’ to get the same treatment.  *****

Gig review: KRIS BARRAS BAND – The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

If there were a prize for the hardest working band in rock, the Kris Barras Band must be in contention. This second full length tour in 10 months takes in a remarkable 25 dates and despite these difficult times has been selling very well.

Having seen the band several times as a support or at festivals this was actually the first time I’d seen a full length show. There were multiple dates within reach of my London base and as I couldn’t make the date in the Capital at the Garage, instead I made a midweek post-work trip down to the Kent spa town of Tunbridge Wells, home of the mythical retired colonel writing letters of disgust to the Daily Telegraph, but with a surprisingly thriving local music scene.

The Forum is a small venue – on this occasion tightly packed to its 250 capacity – with a reputation for attracting major bands to do one off shows, deservedly so on the basis of a pristine sound tonight. It is actually a converted toilet in a town that seems to specialise in inventive uses: after a dinner in an old Opera House now housing a Wetherspoon but keeping its original interior,  en route to the venue I passed a church turned into a gym.

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

Anyway, after that architectural detour, back to the music, starting with a very impressive support act in Dea Matrona, a Belfast trio with young frontwomen Mollie McGinn and Orlaith Forsythe. Unusually they constantly swapped bass and guitar duties while their vocals intertwined seamlessly and they had a very engaging stage presence.

Opener ‘Stamp On It’ had a glitter stomp to it while ‘It’s Only Music’ called to mind The Runaways. They weren’t afraid to cover a number of bases, from ‘Just Wanna Rock’ which sounded like something the Amorettes would have put out, to the out and out folk of ‘Glory Glory and a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Homeward Bound’. Seemingly drawing influence from Joan Jett’s ‘I Hate Myself For Loving You’, ‘Make You My Star’ ended a very pleasant set from a band recommended for lovers of acts such as the Hot Damn. They are doing a headline tour in May and I suspect we may be hearing a lot more from them.

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

With the place heaving the Kris Barras Band boldly opened their set with a signature song in ‘Hail Mary’ which would more usually be saved to an end of set audience participation number. But the majority of the set was from latest album ‘Death Valley Paradise’ and ‘Dead Horses’ and ‘These Voices’, featuring an introductory solo from new bassist Fraser Kerslake who fitted in seamlessly, had heavy and modern arrangements yet with Kris’s vocals keeping them melodic.

He more than once referred to the band’s new heavier sound and even an oldie like ‘Heart On Your Sleeve’ was adapted to the new style, but the way he followed an insidious repeated riff with a rapid, feedback-strewn solo was a relatively rare illustration that a guitar hero is still at large.

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

However ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’ was a fine modern pop rock ballad, and both ‘Hostage’  and ‘Chaos’ were heavier, indeed with an almost industrial beat at times, and guitar solos were kept to a minimum. Indeed on ‘Devil You Know’ which would have given Those Damn Crows a run for their money he left guitar duties to able long time sidekick Josiah J Manning and went into the crowd himself.

Kris movingly spoke of his late father who was a musician but never got to see his own success prior to ‘Watching Over Me’, a soulful blues with some wonderful extended soloing from him worthy of Gary Moore. It felt odd though that his change of musical style has been so abrupt this was the only even vaguely bluesy number in the set and personally I would have preferred to hear a couple more.

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

A cover of ‘Rock And Roll’ was faithfully executed, right from the moment  Billy Hammett knocked out that iconic drum pattern, and gave the band an opportunity to jam and even segued into Carry On Wayward Son, but it is one of those songs so overplayed to become a cliché.

It was back to the new stuff with the aggressive urgency of ‘Who Needs Enemies’ then ‘My Parade’ proved a real fist puncher with Kris parting the crowd like the red sea to indulge in some audience participation in his gruff, drill sergeant like manner. There was a solitary encore in ‘Ignite (Light it Up)’, another with anthemic qualities, which seemed to be over too soon.

KRIS BARRAS BAND- The Forum, Tunbridge Wells, 7 February 2023

Kris Barras has pulled off a bold move in executing a sharp turn in musical direction away from blues rock and towards a heavier and more contemporary sound, but there were few grumbles on this night. With his band, he is on top of his game, and fully deserving of the success that his work ethic seems to be bringing.

Gig review: BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS – Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

When this joint headline arena tour was announced, my first thoughts were that Black Stone Cherry and The Darkness were not natural bedfellows- the earnest blue collar southern rockers from Kentucky and the eccentric English band from East Anglia who had too much too soon.

However commercial sense pointed to pooling resources – for The Darkness, after some critically acclaimed theatre shows and stadium appearances, to at last return to the arenas they graced on the original brief flurry of Darkness mania. And for Black Stone Cherry, to keep their status as an arena filling band after their impressive popularity on these shores, and indeed their creative peak, had arguably reached its plateau.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

They were both living proof that classic guitar based hard rock is not just a musical form of the past. The Darkness’ chequered career has seen them nominated as the first band in the GRTR! Grotto of Greatness to celebrate bands active during our website’s 20 years of existence, during which Black Stone Cherry’s progression from young hopefuls to arena headliners on the back of hard work and humility over the past 16 years is an underrated success story.

There was a third band in the mix with Canadians Danko Jones (both band and eponymous lead singer and guitarist). While the format of a power trio playing balls out rock n roll can be limiting, I enjoyed them more than I expected to. Indeed a couple of songs, ‘I’m In A Band’ and ‘First Date’ had catchy choruses with a hint of Kiss or even (in Danko’s vocal delivery) Thin Lizzy while others sounded a little punky the offspring esque ‘Had Enough’ being a case in point. Even if in a half hour slot Danko probably talked too much, it was an enjoyable straight down the line set.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

A bagpipe type intro heralded The Darkness, giving way to a spectacular arrival among the pyro  that led to a fire evacuation earlier on the tour in Liverpool. They opened with one of their vintage anthems in ‘Growing On Me’, before Justin Hawkins, now shorter haired and sporting a relatively conservative Queen ‘Hot Space’ t-shirt, delivered his welcome old chestnut ‘gimme a d, gimme an ‘arkness’ prior to brother Dan riffing through ‘Black Shuck’. It was followed by the title track of last album ‘Motorheart’, not up to the quality of early stuff songwise but with unexpectedly heavy musicianship including a riff that owed much to Queen’s ‘Stone Cold Crazy’.

Beginning with bassist Frankie Poullain banging a cowbell, sporting an electric blue suit and an arch look on his face,  their homage to the perils of showbiz sherbet ‘One Way Ticket’ was much of a rip snorter as ever, before on the celtic themed ‘Heart Explodes’ Justin’s falsetto was fully deployed as he conducted some audience swaying, almost as a warm up for the forest of hands that accompanied ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’ a couple of songs later.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

He is still delightfully individual, describing their debut as ‘twenty years ago this financial quarter’ and throwing his boots and socks into the crowd, later doing a handstand in front of  the drum riser. But he is also a very underrated lead guitarist, taking the majority of the more intricate solos, which has been brought out as the band have become somewhat heavier over the years.  During ‘Solid Gold’, another of those songs boasting Dan’s strong AC/DC- esque riffing he took hold of a keytar and even played the keyboard riff to ‘Jump’ at the end.

After ‘Japanese Prisoner of Love’ – a rather disjointed song despite some nice twin leads – Justin donned a slashed to the navel red catsuit and from now in it was all ‘Permission To Land’ favourites, to the audience’s delight beginning with ‘Giving Up’; then, preceded by an anecdote how the copious swearing almost but not quite precluded BBC airplay, ‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’ with some call and response with the offensive ‘mother’ word sung out Mercury style.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

The frontman then asked everyone to put phones away and live in the moment (though a few idiots could not still resist) for ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’, and there was a great atmosphere with people bouncing and even those in the seats largely to their feet (for pretty much the only time in the night).

It seemed scarcely conceivable a headline set was already over but fortunately there was still time for ‘Love On The Rocks With No Ice’, extended as Justin and guitar went deep into the crowd on a roadie’s shoulders and a lengthy climax as he played guitar behind his back and the set ended with more pyro. Consensus around me seemed to be that Black Stone Cherry would struggle to follow The Darkness’ spectacular demonstration of showmanship. The band are tighter heavier and dare I say more professional these days, but also an act that would thrive on the larger stages which they have not had the popularity to fill again. This was exactly the right staging post to recapturing those days.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

It left Black Stone Cherry with a challenge that wisely they decided not to match but instead stick to what they do well. With this at least their fourth headline at Wembley and boasting more fans, by my straw poll of t shirts, they were on safe ground. The stage show was less spectacular but an uncluttered, steel and chrome stage with a walkway up to the drum riser provided plenty of opportunity for hyperactive second guitarist Ben Wells and bassist Steve Jewell to swap positions as they ran from one end of the stage to the other.

On what seems to have become their traditional opener ‘Me And Mary Jane’ my first impression was how a lot of the clutter had been stripped from the thick sludgy sound of the original,  and it was now leaner meaner and more contemporary sounding, taking a leaf out of Shinedown’s books. It was followed by a couple of more melodic efforts from the last pair of albums in ‘Burning’ with its ZZ Top- like chug and ‘Again’.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

Frontman Chris Robertson has documented his mental health struggles in the past but appeared in relaxed mood here, even to the extent that early on he threw into the crowd the baseball cap that often partly obscures his face. He is also an underrated lead guitarist, speedy but with a crisp tone, as he showed on the solo to ‘Soulcreek’, one of a series of tried and tested fan favourites including ‘Blind Man’, ‘In My Blood’ where Chris allowed the crowd to take over and ‘Like I Roll’.

However there was one surprise in the middle in ‘Out Of Pocket’, not only a new song but an unusual mix of almost calypso style verses and their heaviest chorus for some time,  an encouraging sign they may not have run out of ideas quite yet.  ‘Cheaper To Drink Alone’, with a naggingly familiar riff, was broken up by Jon Fred Young’s drum solo (in this truncated set was that really necessary?).

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

Then with typical humility the band spoke of their gratitude for a UK audience that strangely has always been bigger than in their home country. Ben cited previous gigs at ‘The Hammersmith’ and ‘The Brixton’ (sic), and Chris thanked those of us at the last London show at the Albert Hall for helping him through his grief at his Dad’s passing, prior to ‘Things My Father Said”, given a rather rockier treatment than the stripped back version I recall from before.

The rest of the gig was less sober in tone, though I was surprised, even disappointed, that the reaction on the floor was not rowdier for those tongue in cheek frat boy anthems ‘White Trash Millionaire’ and ‘Blame It On The Boom Boom’. Indeed the circle pit that used to form during the grungey favourite ‘Lonely Train’ (from the otherwise now neglected first album) was totally absent.

BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS- Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023

After a rather abrupt stage departure they returned, with added bongo player, for an encore of ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, definitely the ELO song that most lends itself for a rock cover and you could sense that both band and crowd were having fun as things got rather looser. Again though, as with The Darkness, an hour and 10 minute long set felt a little of a short change for a co-headliner, enough to satisfy the majority perhaps but a disappointment for die hards of one band or the other.

Nevertheless this was an excellent evening’s entertainment, proving conclusively the rock scene is alive and well. I must admit that for me The Darkness’s showmanship did slightly overshadow Black Stone Cherry’s more meat and potatoes performance, but both bands were on top form.

Album review: PROGedia – Dioscuri

PROGedia - Dioscuri

R&S Records [Release date: 24.03.23 - Digital 24.04.23 - Physical]

If you want a great groove to start the New Year, head this way.  Fed Conti is an Italian producer and multi instrumentalist and his latest project is quite wonderful.

The tracks mix electronica, trip-hop beats, rock and jazz funk, with a funky electric piano and nice atmospherics.

Once ‘We Are The Night’ breaks into one humongous groove, the sound is totally captivating.  There is a world music feel to the lyrics which only add to the intrigue and then that Lonnie Liston Smith piano comes in to reinforce the song’s early expectation.  For lapsed funkateers, heaven.

To coin a cliche: If you don’t move to this, check your pulse.

‘Nobody Screams’ features the vocals of La Boutique (who?) with solitary brass hooking us into a decidely synthwave workout.  The instrumental ‘PROGedia’ fuses chill-out beats and smooth jazz.

Apparently ‘Dioscuri’ developed naturally as Conti embraced different genres but all rooted in the groove and his club-ready production credentials.

Some of these tracks have an almost mantra-like hypnosis.  Conti has been influenced by Vangelis, Zappa and even Led Zeppelin but this album is very much his own vision.  ‘There’s A Horse In My Closet’ is a track that I am sure Jeff Beck would have loved to have played on with guitar punctuating the relentless drone rhythm.

More riffery and distorted keys a la Deodato and a Stone Roses-esque vocal on ‘Down’ whilst ‘Aaron In The Sky With Almonds’ is like something from a film thriller soundtrack but with a cool jazz feel.

‘Dioscuri’ stands above much predictability these days and transcends what you might sometimes call “chill-out” or even, disparingly,  “lift” music.  It demands a wider audience than in the elevator and, with that,  one prepared to shake their booty.  ****

Album review: GABRIELLE DE VAL – Kiss In A Dragon Night

GABRIELLE DE VAL - Kiss In A Dragon Night

Escape Music [Release date 17.02.23]

Gabrielle de Val has been involved in the rock scene since 1987 when she created the band Yin-Yang, which would later be called D’Val. They never recorded a full album, however, fast forward to 2010 when de Val along with Alfonso Samos, David Erick and Alex Morell reappeared as The Val. They released their debut album ‘Back’, followed by ‘Heading for the Surface’ (2015) and  ‘King Ocelot’(2020).

‘Kiss in a Dragon Night’, Gabrielle de Val’s first solo album, features guest vocalists Steve Overland (FM/Lonerider), Mick Devine (The Roads/Seven), Robin McAuley (Black Swan/MSG), Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen) and Terry Brock (Strangeways), as well as musicians such as Gary Pihl (Boston/Sammy Hagar), Eric Ragno (Joe Lynn Turner/Babys), Johan Kullberg (HammerFall) and Fredrik Folkare (Nordic Union).

As Gabrielle de Val herself explains all of the musicians involved have “given me more than I could have ever imagined and with songs that I have put all my soul and dedication into.”

The romping hard rock fun that is ‘When Midnight Comes’, featuring Mark Boals, is an early album highlight. Both singers suit each other style well and the chorus is insanely catchy.

Further into the album many other treats lie in wait for the listener including the AOR-tastic ‘Fight For Love’, which sees Mick Devine make the first of two guest appearances. This song has everything you want in classy AOR/melodic rock from the soaring vocals, upbeat backing, snazzy guitar solo and lashings of keys. Mick’s back for the album closer, a big power ballad beastie that is ‘Hold On’.

Of the two covers, the Mike Oldfield classic ‘Moonlight Shadow’ is stunning and suits Gabrielle’s vocals perfectly. On the cover of Magnum’s ‘Stayin’ Alive’ she duets with Terry Brock. Not an obvious choice a tune from ‘II’, one of Magnum’s lesser known albums (albeit not with the band’s hardcore following as said album does have some classics on it!).

The whole album is full of highlights to be fair, although ‘Natural High’, where Gabrielle is joined by FM’s Steve Overland, is a perfect example of how you can still produce modern day melodic rock which has its own sound and doesn’t sound like a rehash of the 80′s greats of the genre.

Whether singing with one the many guest vocalists or on her own, Gabrielle de Val further enhances her reputation as one of the finest melodic hard rock vocalists around today, on this hugely enjoyable debut solo album. ****

Single review: LETITIA GEORGE – Don’t Stop Me From Loving You

LETITIA GEORGE – Don’t Stop Me From Loving You

Jig-Saw Music Ltd  [Release date 19.12.22]

‘Don’t Stop Me From Loving You’ is the kind of climactic outing that might have appealed to Dusty Springfield all those years ago and if nothing else confirms the durability of a soulful ballad.

And yet this isn’t quite the Memphis soul outing you might expect, as the opening couple of bars and a lyrical themes of love, hope and aspiration suggest a blue collar country ballad.

It’s actually a slow burner that has to overcome Letitia’s slightly tentative start, and a very early guitar solo which pushes it towards rock balladry.

However, she digs deep to extend her vocal attack around the 2.37 minute mark and together with the uplifting chorus transforms the song into a soulful tour de force.

Letitia sounds like a versatile singer who could turn her hand to many genres. And given that old school soulful balladry is suddenly back in vogue it might well provide her with commercial opportunities.

A few vocal flutters mean this is not quite the finished product, but her emotive phrasing, the big chorus and strong melody might be enough to court day time radio. ***½

Album review: WHAT A GROOVY DAY – The British Sunshine Pop Sound, 1967-72 (3 CD boxset)

Cherry Red/ Grapefruit [Release date 27.02.23]

Sunshine Pop – a worldwide phenomenon, though most popular in the USA and the UK – predated the age of psychedelia only by a matter of months.

Legendary but hitless sixties UK band, Tony Rivers and The Castaways had discreetly changed their name to Harmony Grass in 1967, releasing ‘What A Groovy Day’, as their “debut” single, giving this 3 disc, 86 track boxset its name.

Its blissful sound makes for the perfect Sunshine Pop song, as good as anything coming out the USA at the time from artists like The Association, Mike Curb Congregation or The Fifth Dimension. The UK was now on the map.

The inimitable songwriting/ producing UK suspects, John Carter and Ken Lewis, whose ear for a commercial music opportunity was unsurpassed (see The First Class and Beach Baby), loomed large once again.

Carter’s solo hit ‘She Won’t Show Up Tonight’ sits right next to Sixties survivors, The Tremeloes and ‘Sunshine Games’.

Many other eminently durable UK pop artists began life somewhere across these 3 discs. Herman’s Hermits (Sleepy Joe, written by Carter), The Zombies (Friends Of Mine), The Hollies (Everything Is Sunshine), Cliff Richard (Mr Nice, penned by prolific UK hit writer, Terry Britten), Genesis (Try A Little Sadness, one of many songs rejected by Impresario, Jonathan King, when the band were starting out) and Petula Clark (Colour My World, written by another prolific UK hit writer, Tony Hatch).

All of these artists used the Sunshine Pop banner to gain a foothold on fame.

The oft quoted Freaky Trigger, the internet publication that focuses on popular culture, referred to the Top Ten song (and Paul Weller favourite) ‘Jesamine’ by The Casuals as “charming and sun kissed”. The perfect Sunshine Pop accolade. It went on to trouble the charts all over Europe. The song’s writer, Marty Wilde, needs no introduction. His fascinating demo version features in this collection.

There are many more artists and songs here, who for some reason, usually fate and/or bad timing, failed to score.

The Symbols’ 1967 cover of the Four Seasons’ ‘Bye Bye Baby’ closes Disc 1 in grand style. It was a surprising chart failure. Scotland’s own Bay City Rollers took it to the No.1 spot in the UK charts in 1975, where it stayed for 6 weeks.

David And Jonathan’s (Cook & Greenaway) version of their own song ‘Softly Whispering I Love You’ is here. It also stiffed, to be later resurrected by The Congregation and turned into a worldwide hit.

Pop Music’s cross fertilisation between (sub) genres, and indeed between continents, continued unabated through the late sixties and early seventies, almost like it was unaware of the advent of Progressive Rock. Punk was on the horizon but hadn’t yet arrived.

In the world of Pop Music, there was more good stuff to come. ****
