Album review: DANGER DANGER – Screw It (2022 Remaster)

Rock Candy Records [Release date: 07.10.22]

Somebody lost the “best before 1989” label when Danger Danger were recording Screw It (1991), the follow up to their gold album debut.

The sexist album cover; the impossible to misinterpret, double entendre song titles, like ‘Yeah, You Want It’, ‘Slipped Her The Big One’, ‘Horny S.O.B.’ might have just about got by at the height of MTV, but sexual attitudes were changing.

And it could have been so different.

Lyrically questionable perhaps, but big hitters, ‘Monkey Business’, ‘Beat The Bullet’, and ‘Don’t Blame It On Love’ all mined a rich seam of glammy, bandana wearing melodic rock, given a neat studio shine by producer Erwin (Scorpions/Bon Jovi/ Van Halen) Musper.

But they were out of time … even a couple of years earlier these songs would have propelled Screw It into the Billboard charts, no… er, danger.

Even the well intentioned, benevolent sexism of ‘Get Your Shit Together’ that might have got a free pass some years before sounds off.

And yet . . . ‘I Still think Of You’ and ‘Find Your Way Back Home’ are top of the range formula ballads, ticking all the chest beating boxes, echoing the successes of bands like Poison and Cinderella.

But those days were gone.

The remastering is as good as we’ve come to expect from Rock Candy. Their Tech Team take some criticism at times, but they always come through with a cleaner, sharper sound. ***

Album review: JULIE DRISCOLL – 1969 (remaster)

Cherry Red [Release date: 28.10.22]

From the beginning of her career in the sixties, singer Julie Driscoll had worked with the Brian Auger Trinity. And indeed she fronted that band when she scored two UK Chart hits in 1968, covers of Dylan’s ‘Wheels On Fire’ and Donovan’s ‘Season Of The Witch’.

Her ambitions then saw her moving into a world of more adventurous music, gradually migrating toward an art-rock style, adopting musical forms more familiar in theatre and “low budget” movies.

Arguably, that direction began with her self composed 1969 album, produced by her future husband, Keith Tippett, with a fluid studio band that variously included the great and the good of UK rock, pop and jazz. Including Chris Spedding, James Creggan and a variety of Trinity, Soft Machine, Blossom Toes and other highly respected studio musicians.

It was quite a left field departure, courting jazz aficionados as well as folkrock fans. She was clearly more comfortable handling complex musical arrangements, than she was transposing Dylan into psychedelic pop.

The Cherry Red Tech Team’s sympathetic remastering has added a clarity and a warmth that’s sometimes needed to soften Driscoll’s pointed lyrics.

Her beautifully crafted acoustic folk/rock song, ‘Those That We Love’ has a few sharp lyrical edges, providing effortless proof that she was a songwriter who could turn first and second hand emotions into stories worth telling. Her deep and powerful vocal phrasing might remind you of Grace Slick on ‘Lather’. It did me.

That standout track is bookended by the sorrowful jazzy tones of ballad, ‘Leaving It All Behind’, and the brittle New Wave jazz of ‘A New Awakening’, both juggling difficult memories with future promise.

There’s a strong whiff in both songs of the groundbreaking jazz rock coming across the Atlantic at the time, from bands like Chicago Transit Authority (later just Chicago) and Al Kooper’s band, Blood, Sweat And Tears, especially the punchy brass/horns, punctuating the lyrics.

These highlighted tracks are not unique. The entire album is an exceptional feat of naturalistic songwriting. The real skill Driscoll has is to make them sound relevant and personal. ****

Album review: FOXTON & HASTINGS – The Butterfly Effect

FOXTON & HASTINGS – The Butterfly Effect

Absolute [Release date 28.10.22]

Few bands have continued the legacy of a truly legendary act than From The Jam, their original line-up two thirds of the seminal outfit. Whilst never being just purely a tribute act, The Jam bass player Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler set out with vocalist and guitarist Russell Hastings set out to not just carry the flame but to push forward.

The relationship between Foxton and Hastings blossomed and with Buckler having left the band in 2009 the two remain the founding members have forged a song writing bond that has reaped many rewards.

‘The Butterfly Effect’ marks the third joint album the pair have done together and it’s a delicious stroll through their joint record collection, tipping a hat to the artists that have influenced them whilst remaining true to their own creative wanderings.

Something to be enjoyed in one sitting or dipped into, this release has mixes joyful sounds and unwavering cool as it winds its way through the senses.

With a touch of the Beatles, some R&B and the hard-edged swagger of their own band, opener ‘Electronic Lover’ hits things running, then ‘Feet Off the Ground’ turns things on their head with its beautifully chilled and Summery feel.

Featuring some fluid keys, the track has a touch of Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ riff subtly in there, the writing having a really classic feel to it, enhanced by a warm production. There’s some great additional instrumentation on the album too, a sax solo adding extra dazzle to the feel-good and Summery ‘Lula’ and a mandolin in the equally lovely ‘She Said’.

Along with the joyous vibe there’s a level of sophistication that speaks of decades writing well crafted songs, this distillation of influences and talents providing a broad palette of colours.

Hearing the cool, jazzy ‘Wanted’ and the constantly shifting ‘Circles’ can’t but help to bring a warm smile to even the most cynical of hearts. Whilst ‘Time on Your Side’ doesn’t quite hit the mark, it’s the only slight dip and the throbbing ‘Two of Us’ more than makes up for this, it’s Quadrophenia atmosphere full of the end of the Summer of Love and fisticuffs on Brighton beach.

The album closes with the beautiful ‘Rain’ and ‘Too Old to Cry, Too Young to Die’ wistfully tugging at heartstrings and touching memories long filed away. It’s the perfect end to a great release and one that should cheer the hearts of not just From The Jam fans but anyone with a love of truly good music. An album filled with sublime moments and a raw, yet well tempered, passion. ****

Gig review: H.E.A.T. – Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

Since H.E.A.T’s London show was first announced in early 2020 a lot has happened. The show was postponed twice, the venue switched and Vega dropped off the bill after refusing to play second fiddle to the fast rising Mason Hill. As for the headliners, they have released two albums in that time but singer Erik Gronwall who had taken their popularity to a fresh dimension left, and equally unexpectedly, original singer Kenny Leckremo returned after over a decade’s absence.

There was a very healthy crowd present- certainly far greater than their last London headline in 2017 – for this, my first gig ever at the Electric, formerly the famous Fridge and reminding me in layout of the long lamented Astoria. Unfortunately its main role as a night club did manifest itself in an ear splitting loud sound, the bass in particular.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

Opening the bill were Collateral, the second of three such opening slots for them this autumn for the Kent melodic rockers. They opened with two of their more hard hitting numbers in ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Mr Big Shot’ with the unexpected guest appearance of H.E.A.T’s drummer Crash while ‘Midnight Queen’ made a welcome return to the set though the aforementioned sound rather drowned out the subtleties. They threw in a couple.of new songs, ‘No Time for Love’ reminding me of the likes of Firehouse and Dokken with a fine vocal melody and ‘Sin in the City’ a little more sleazy, before set closer ‘Merry Go Round’ was as heavy as I’ve yet seen them, the expansion to a two guitar line up really making a difference.

Mason Hill faced something of an ‘away gig’ challenge. For starters their sound is significantly heavier than the two bands either side. Moreover as I looked around there were pockets of fans joining in, but significantly less than on the previous support slot with Stone Broken , implying there were large numbers unfamiliar with them.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

It was a challenge the young Glaswegians rose to with flying colours as both ‘Hold On’ and ‘DNA’ showed their mix of uncompromisingly heavy riffs with melodic chorus hooks. On both the angsty ‘Out of Reach’ and ‘Find My Way’ the emphasis was more on the former and yet the guitar solos of James Bird stood out.

That though was just the aperitif for the brooding epic ‘Where I Belong’ where his studied solo was little short of spine tingling. After another heavy number in ‘We Pray’ it occurred to me during the massively anthemic ‘Broken Son’ that in their infancy the band have already written two songs that will be regarded as classics in years to come.  Scott Taylor led the crowd through the chorus of the title track of their debut album ‘Against the Wall’, ending a lean 40 minute set devoid of padding which hopefully would have made some fresh converts to one of the very best of the young bands.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

After their usual ‘The Heat is On’ intro tape-and a brief technical hitch- H.E.A.T opened with ‘Back to the Rhythm’, a perfect opener just as it is on the new ‘Force Majeure’, and with a huge sound fuller  than I remember them ever having, and a guitar solo from Dave Dalone that reminded me of that on Europe’s ‘Superstitious’.

For most people this will also have been their first chance to see how Kenny Leckremo could fill Erik Gronwall’s substantial shoes. I’d thought he had been trying too hard to outdo his predecessor for energy at Stonedead in the summer, but am pleased to report he had calmed down a little, more focused yet utterly dominating the stage. Better still he sang many the of the bangers from 2020’s ‘H.E.A.T II’ that I feared would never be played live with both ‘Dangerous Ground’ and ‘Rock Your Body’ significantly heavier live and generating an enthusiastic crowd response, followed by ‘Come Clean’ with Jona Tee’s keyboards more prominent.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

‘Redefined’ from the controversial ‘Into the Great Unknown’  album has been exactly that, stripped of the modern studio trickery, and was a welcome change of pace, Moving into the present, ‘Hollywood’s earworm chorus got people bouncing, while the main lyric of ‘Tainted Blood’, ‘got a force inside of me’ was appropriate as I have never heard H.E.A.T with quite such a lean, focused heaviness, Dave showing he is more than just a widdly-widdly merchant.

I was drawing comparisons, and not only in the singer’s looks, to the first couple of pre-fame Europe albums. They were sandwiched by a first dip into Kenny’s first stint with the band in ‘Straight for Your Heart’ with another great crowd response though it distinctly benefited from the backing vocals of Jona and bassist Jimmy Jay.

It would have been hard to maintain the momentum and indeed things got rather disjointed with an early drum solo from Crash, brandishing a family sword, then the whole band left the stage for what was probably only a few seconds but seemed considerably longer as a taped techno-like intro played before Kenny roared back on stage wrapped in a giant union flag  for ‘One by One’.

But things were then broken up again with a Dave Dalone guitar showcase and the Van Halen-esque ‘Beg Beg Beg’, though fun for audience participation, seemed to go on for ever. Fortunately the gig was soon back on track with a return to the first album for ballad ‘Cry’ which I suspect many people never expected to hear again, and his rich delivery confirmed that of the two singers, Kenny has the edge technically on his predecessor.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

‘1000 Miles’ saw a favour repaid as Collateral’s Angelo Tristan came on to complete perhaps the longest haired musical duet in history, before many at the front, your reviewer included were bouncing around to a pair of anthems from ‘Address the Nation’ in ‘Breaking the Silence’ and ‘Living On the Run’, the latter perhaps the only song where he didn’t quite match up to Erik.

The first encore brought things right up to date with ‘Nationwide’, another example of their new found sharp heaviness, before a little surprise as another anthem in ‘A Shot at Redemption’ was given a bit of a makeover, with a new opening arrangement, slow and bluesy and showcasing Kenny’s voice.

H.E.A.T- Electric, Brixton, London, 18 October 2022

As if the atmosphere wasn’t already good enough, the closing strains of ‘Sister Christian’ and all three bands coming on for an end of tour selfie added to the feeling of joy and warmth in the air. After all that period of change both in the wider world and the H.E.A.T camp, the standard bearers for the new age of melodic rock have come back with possibly the best show of theirs I have seen, and one with the big sound and gestures and set pieces that can and should translate to larger venues. A triumphant return indeed.

Gig review: QUARANTUNE ROCKS 2022, The Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville 21 & 22 October 2022

A group of rock music fans who supported each other during Lockdown gathered at the Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville on 21-22 October, for Quarantune Rocks 2022, a weekend of live music supporting new rock bands and small music venues.

“For this year’s non-profit event, we made it a mission to source some of the best new music out there, with performances from nine bands over 2 days and headline appearances from Bastette and King Kraken, we were delighted with our line-up, and we were confident the event would rock but like always, it is the people that make the event.”

So firstly, a huge shout out to John and the super friendly team at The Victoria Biker’s Pub who hosted our event. John did a sterling job juggling being the only sound engineer across 2 stages and also stepping up as chef, the rest of the team were great fun and kept everyone fed and watered – thank you all so much.

An even bigger thank you to every single one of you who came along to support us, to Steve Russ for the amazing video work across both days and of course, to all our amazing bands, without whom our event wouldn’t happen.

We know that things are changing and there are more and more, female led rock bands out there these days, but we absolutely wanted to ensure we balanced our bill and showcased all talent, it is a huge privilege to have 3 female fronted bands on our bill this year.

Our opener was Bare Knuckle, a 5-piece hailing from Oxfordshire, with a new lead singer, Darren at the helm, this was always going to be a challenge, particularly as they have made the move from rock covers to their own original material. Opening with ‘Dive Bomber’, the pacy set showed their potential and their heavier side, particularly on ‘Machinegun’.

With a poignant tribute to a much-loved member of the QR family who is no longer with us, Carlos stepped up to deliver AC/DC’s ‘Shoot to Thrill and ‘If You Want Blood’ in all its glory – thank you so much for that, we know Keith would have been rocking with us! Post event this band donated their fee to the Music Venue Trust bucket too – thanks lads, that’s very humbling.

Next up, were False Hearts, who were on fine form despite an arduous journey from Cambridge, and in no time at all they took to the stage opening with the powerful ‘See Me Now’ for an hour long set, which included a great cover of Halestorm’s ‘I Like It Heavy’, the crowd were eating out of your collective hands in minutes. Emma delivers in spades as frontwoman, bringing powerful vocals and guitar skills, this band are accomplished musicians that deliver big track after big track, including ‘Breathe Again’, ‘Misery’ and closing out to a rapturous crowd with ‘Remedy’, the bar was well and truly set.

Our Friday headliner is Bastette, coming from Blackburn, this is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Caroline, accompanied by her 4-piece band, this relatively new line-up works really well.

This is their first (and well-deserved) headline gig, but you would never know it as Bastette comes alive on stage, bringing the inner lioness to the fore and showcasing her band, they are on fire.

Opening with the latest single, ‘Fiction’, and pretty much blasting through the tracks off the latest EP ‘Awakening’ such as ‘Psycho’ before heading into the much softer ‘Sunglass’ from the ‘Exposed’ EP along with crowd pleaser ‘Hunter’ and ‘Lover’, Bastette delivers an electric, crowd rousing performance from the off.

Caroline is a sassy, performer who brings everything to each track and her band are absolute class. It is always good to see two bands who you think will complement each other, actually meet so it was an absolute pleasure to introduce False Hearts to Bastette after their respective sets, what an awesome combination that would be!

What you can never fail to be humbled by is the total generosity of spirit from bands and the rock community, so we had bands adding fees, merchandise sales to our chosen charity, Music Venue Trust, and then when Acey Lust was unable to perform due to illness, Paul Stead (The Darker My Horizon) delivered an impromptu acoustic set to open our second day – playing tracks that were predominantly different to their planned later full set, with his usual aplomb, opening with ‘Carpe Diem’, including ‘Stay’ for TDmH family royalty, Rob & Lisa, who recently got married and had this song written for them, what a treat to see it performed live, and closing with ‘Dear Olivia’ and chucking in some covers for good measure, thanks for doing the extra set and big thanks for including Whitesnake, that certainly made team admin happy!

Next up on the outside stage are Swindon-based 4 piece, Fall From Ruin, showcasing another female led band, Alicia is the epitome of energy, which is impressive considering the lack of sleep, they open with ‘Mr Nice Guy’, and you can see the impact of Alicia’s vocals on the crowd, we are on it!

Playing a fabulous cover of Black Stone Cherry’s ‘Blame it on the Boom, Boom’ gets the dancing started, and any cobwebs from the preceding night’s shenanigans are soon forgotten. When Alan and Alicia duet on ‘So Long’, it’s a match made in heaven with Alicia showcasing her guitar skills. They ramp up the rock with the rest of their set and Mike goes walk about in the crowd (Mike on the mike!), despite guitar strap challenges this is just an awesome set, and we loved it.

Next up is Guns For Girls, who are a Shropshire based, 3-piece, who we at QR HQ all have a little band crush on. Don’t underestimate how much noise they can make as a 3-piece, they rock the outer stage, with a song-packed set that opens with ‘Dancefloor Crackwhore’, if you weren’t awake before you are now!

The last single, ‘Universal Ice Breaker’ is next, and then they mix it up chucking in a Pixies cover, ‘Where is my Mind’. Guns for Girls appear to have made a lot of new friends by the time their set concludes with ‘Where is the Sun’ and ‘Children of the Revolution’. Gavin, on lead vocals and guitar makes it look easy, Carl on bass and backing vocals despite being under the weather, delivers and Dylan provides all the rhythm needed on drums, simply put, great on every level.

After a short break, we take things to the inside stage, opening with Lords Of Ruin, who must have had one of the longest journeys (apart from our Scottish admin/roadcrew Joe and Andy) as they’d trekked down from Carlisle.

Taking on the mantle of an hour long set for the first time, they breeze it and from the opener, ‘Decay’ there’s no doubt that this band are on their way up, covering their back catalogue in full, they tore the roof off with, ‘What’s Left’, demonstrating their full range and potential, from the ballad like ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Man I Am’ to the sublimely heavier tracks from ‘In From the Cold’ and ‘Awakened’ which sees the crowd bouncing, new followers found, I think this band is well and truly cemented in our QR family.

When The Darker My Horizon (TDmH) hit the stage, with new material from their latest album, ‘When Two Worlds Collide’ included in the set, and their ever-faithful support in the house, we know we are in for a good rock out.

Never workshy, this band who headlined last year’s event, had a packed set especially as Paul had already delivered an acoustic set, they choose to open with ‘Functional Dysfunctional’ which sets the tone, and shift up the gears before showcasing new songs ‘Gaslight’ , the Ukraine charity single, ‘Propaganda part one’, the rather upbeat and catchy ‘Timing is Everything’ and the ever poignant ‘Heartbeat’.

The set includes crowd pleasers such as ‘Paradise’, ‘Spit’ (what an opening riff from Mark) and ‘Sleaze’ as well as a cover of ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’, they close out their packed set, with ‘Still Alive’ and yes, yes we are!

What can we say about our Saturday night headliner, King Kraken, they stepped in at short notice as our previously booked band were unable to play and then they go and donate their merchandise sales to our Music Venue Trust charity bucket.

So, for the previously uninitiated, King Kraken are a 5 five piece from South Wales, who have been together since 2018, their warm Welsh tones bely the heavy Kraken sound that is about to be unleashed!

Opening with ‘Monster’ there’s no mistaking they’ve arrived, and ‘Green Terror’ cements them on that stage with completely sublime riffs from Adam and Pete, that they make look easy, and the powerhouse of a frontman, Mark, showing us all how it’s done, this is one a hell of a way to draw our event to a close.

Showcasing their new single from the forthcoming ‘MCLXXX’ album, ‘Haddonfield ’78,’ it is one hell of a party delivering full-on, high-octane rock, played by accomplished musicians. King Kraken came, they played, and they conquered the Quarantune Rocks family, and yep, we did manage to have a beer too.

We were really excited to be arranging another weekend of live music following the success of our inaugural event, this year, we took a chance and made it a 2 day event with even more bands to showcase at a legendary small music venue, times are tough out there and we all know that for many live music is a luxury item given the cost of living changes, but we have to support the venues to give new bands a place to play.

We always say how lucky we are in our group, as community is really a family and boy, did our QR family turnout for us, many had arduous journeys as the weather was biblical on Friday, let alone the amount of miles covered as bands and supporters travelled from all over the country, to showcase their support for the live music scene. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, it meant the world to us to see you all there and meet in person, we had an absolute blast, and we truly appreciate the support. Here’s to next year’s bash …..

Personal plea, if you are passionate about music, as are we, then please, please support it however you can, follow a band, buy the CD or merchandise, go to a small gig venue, check out bands you have never heard of – you’ll have a ball and be contributing to the live scene.

Album review: CACTUS – Evil Is Going On (The Atco Albums 1970-72, 8 CDs)

Cherry Red [Release date 28.10.22]

Quite some Cactus boxset. Cherry Red have repackaged all of the Blues Rock legends’  releases into a sturdy 8 CD box. It contains the 4 studio albums recorded 1972-74, and 4 albums’ worth of live material, never before bundled together.

The band was formed by two ex Vanilla Fudge musicians, Carmen Appice on drums and Tim Bogert on bass. The line up was rounded out by revered guitarist Jim McCarty, ex of Buddy Miles Express and The Detroit Wheels.

Amboy Dukes/ Damn Yankees guitar man, Ted Nugent said of McCarty “Remember his name… he is as important as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry… a god on guitar”. McCarty’s hollow bodied jazz guitar features large on these recordings, both studio and live. It’s those big, full fat chords that drive the music.

Nugent’s erstwhile bandmate, Rusty Day became the Cactus vocalist just prior to the recording of the band’s self titled debut album.

Day’s grainy, miles-on-the-clock vocals regularly wrapped themselves around some of the great blues rock songs from the pre-rock’n'roll era. Covers of Mose Allison’s ‘Parchman Farm’ and ‘You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover’ – rock blues pioneer Willie Dixon’s infuential slice of street philosophy – are the album’s foundational tracks.

The same is true of follow up album, One Way Or Another. Covers of Little Richard’s ‘Long Tall Sally’ and Chuck Willis’s ‘I Feel So Bad’ are the glue that holds the band’s own blues rock gems tight. Those gems – ‘No Need To Worry’, ‘Let Me Swim’ and ‘Big Mama Boogie’ – stood tall in that company and all became popular components of the Cactus live set.

Third album, Restrictions, reinforces the band’s credentials as a bona fide, born on the Bayou Blues Rock band, with the stomping, wailing ‘Token Chokin’, ‘Evil’ and ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’ steamrollering over everything in their path.

The band’s fourth and last studio album of the seventies, Ot’N'Sweaty, is exactly that. Even the fact it’s flavoured with a distinct twist of Memphis doesn’t disguise its muddy, meat and potatoes’ blues.

In fairness, the band had undergone considerable line up surgery since Restrictions. McCarty and Day, the duo who helped build a locomotive boogie sound onto Appice and Bogert’s bolted to the floor rhythm section, had both departed. They were impossible to replace.

Of the new tracks, only ‘Bedroom Mazurka’ and ‘Bad Stuff’ were genuine contenders.

The 4 CDs of live material comprise the band’s Fully Unleashed, The Live Gigs Volumes 1 and 2. Previously released, but not in this fully self contained form.
2 CDs to each volume.

Volume 1 consists primarily of the band’s final show at the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis (1971). Cactus were an incendiary live act, fast and loud, always peppering their stage set with with the usual suspects… ‘Evil’ ‘Big Mama Boogie’, ‘Bag Drag, and inevitably, ‘Parchman Farm’ and others, in front of an audience already sold.

Volume 2 is another ‘Final Show’ recording (by Eddie Kramer, producer to the stars…Hendrix, Stones, Kiss etc etc). This time at the now defunct but once world famous Gilligans in New York State. We were still in 1971. The original band was still intact.

This from Bill De Young, journalist of the time, and prolific liner note writer (Chicago, Black Oak Arkansas, 38 Special): “This was Cactus at its take-no-prisoners peak. There was never anything ‘showbiz’ about them; the goal, both onstage and off, was to rock like there was no tomorrow.”

Say no more. *****

Album review: RICHARD MARX – Songwriter

RICHARD MARX- Songwriter

Shelter Records (Release date 30.09.22)

Only a year after releasing his last album. ‘Limitless’, Richard Marx is back with perhaps his most ambitious work yet. The very title suggests that despite a solo career which made him one of the biggest selling artists of the late eighties and early nineties, especially in America, the career as a writer of songs that has ensured his longevity is what defines him.

As if to show off, this not a conventional album, consisting of four sides, respectively badged pop, rock, country and ballads. Impressive co-writing credits suggest a man who the whole music industry- across several generations- enjoys working with, while two of his sons also chip in.

Though that pleasant voice is still crystal clear, the quintet of pop songs may surprise old-school Marxists, sparsely arranged with little guitar but employing modern pop production techniques.

It may lead to some cynicism in some quarters that this man as associated with the eighties as his former mullet hairstyle is now getting ‘down with the kids’,  but the songwriting shines through particularly on ‘Only A Memory’ and ‘Moscow Calling’ where a big, up-tempo hook is enhanced by string samples.

Naturally the rock side is more guitar heavy as the snarling ‘Shame on You’ opens with crashing powerchords  and ‘Not Alone’ is another out and out rocker while ‘One More Yesterday’, written with Chris Daughtry, is mid tempo but with brilliant melodies. As with the pop selection he has embraced the contemporary production values currently being deployed by the newer generation of mainly Scandinavian acts, and wouldn’t it be nice if Jon Bon Jovi could have taken a leaf out of his book?

The quintet of songs that form the country side are the strongest for me and the most natural fit. Country is an unnecessary pigeonhole for some quality songs that straddle pop and rock and are seldom overly ’twangy’. ‘Everything I Got’ has bluesy guitar and a muscular swagger- again something Bryan Adams should be doing now, but doesn’t.

The bright and sunny ‘Breaking My Heart’ is quite simply classic peak period Richard Marx.  ‘Misery Loves Company’ is more countryish while ‘One Day Longer’ is excellent, the fact it is a co write with Keith Urban giving the biggest musical clue to the direction of this side. ‘We Had It All’ is rocky with the chiming melodies of U2 who he cited as one of his favourites at the recent Union Chapel London gig.

Even though they have provided him with his biggest hits, the fourth side of ballads holds less interest for me. Though the fact the first one, ‘Always’, was written with Burt Bacharach, shows the esteem in which he is held by songsmiths from different generation.  Sparse with piano and occasional strings and acoustic guitar, they show the art of the songwriter stripped to its most naked:  however the effect of five ballads in a row makes for a very one-paced and downbeat end to the album.

In fact the format of stacking similar songs together does not make for the easiest listening in terms of flow and it may well be an album which people playlist and cherry pick their favourite styles from.

But whether a genuine solo album or showcasing a portfolio  of songs that others might wish to cover, one thing is for sure. To call it ‘Songwriter’  is not a vainglorious boast from this master craftsman.  ****

Gig review: MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

The main stage Saturday lineup at this year’s Download Festival was enlivened by two fine mid afternoon performances, one after the other, from Those Damn Crows, then Monster Truck. A bout of severe hay fever had stopped me fully enjoying the experience, but they were impressive enough to convert me to the idea of doing the autumn tour the pair had already announced.

In truth, I was surprised the former were not doing their own headline shows to capitalise on their growing popularity and some very well received festival appearances, but I overheard in the queue for the toilets they were honouring a tour that had actually been planned prior to the pandemic. Yet at the same time a worrying reflection of the economic climate was that the London date on the tour was switched from Shepherds Bush Empire to Islington Assembly Hall, arguably a nicer venue but only half the capacity.

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

Given just 45 minutes to play with, there was a good crowd by the time Those Damn Crows came on, Shane Greenhall last to rush on stage with that trademark big glint in his eyes. The singer is an exceptional frontman though an indoor venue does slightly cramp his style compared to those festival appearances.

They opened with the big anthemic, almost Foo Fighters esque chorus of ‘Who Did It’, before the more rapid yet still melodic chorus of ‘Long Time Dead’. With few frills to their well-drilled music- though drummer Ronnie Huxford was an absolute powerhouse- it was Shane who caught the attention, getting right in the face of fans at the front during ‘Don’t Give a Damn’ and ‘Send the Reaper’.

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

Early next year sees the release of their third album ‘Inhale/Exhale’ and again ‘Wake Up’ got an airing – definitely with a grungier feel but with the hook still present on the chorus- before a return to familiar material. Even without the keys that graced the festival shows, ‘Blink of an Eye’ still sounded massive, they really hit their stride during ‘Sin on Skin’, and ‘Go Get It’ was another that combined rapid fire  heaviness with a strong melodic chorus hook.

However the best was saved till last in the form of anthem ‘Rock and Roll Ain’t Dead’ with fans shouting out the rumbling ‘who-oh-oh’ chant even before the song started and again after it had finished. In between the frontman ran all the way to the top balcony and stood on it, only a security man holding his leg standing between him and disaster. Consensus was next time the Welshmen would be headlining, and indeed days later a 2023 tour was announced which includes their own show here. I wonder if health and safety officials might be making a few pre-show checks?

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

Excellent though Those Damn Crows were, there was little danger of anti climax with Monster Truck supported by plenty of fans of their own and the Canadians opened very strongly with a pair of anthems in ‘Why Are You Not Rocking’ (though confusingly the main chorus lyric is actually ‘rock and roll may save your life tonight’ with the song title nowhere to be seen), and the rumbling feel of ‘Old Train’ train with its ‘who-oh-oh’ chant.

The keys of Brandon Bliss played a significant role for the first time during ‘She’s a Witch’ which was followed by another heavy, hook-filled  boogie in Denim Danger. During ‘Golden Woman’ one of those fans turned to me and said ‘they have so many catchy songs’ and certainly at that point it was true. The band’s blue collar work ethic and honesty shines through: they say relatively little but ploughed through an impressive value for money 18 songs in an hour and 25 minutes.

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

While singer Jon Harvey is tethered somewhat to his bass and the vocal mike, their trump card in show terms is bare chested guitarist Jeremy Widerman- looking unrecognisable in a crew cut- and his hyperactive charging across the stage.  He is far from a clown though and a very nifty lead player despite not having the luxury of a second guitarist backing him up.

‘Fuzz Mountain’ saw Brandon’s heavy work on the Hammond enhance the sound in the mould of Uriah Heep or, more recently, Wolfmother, but generally his keys seemed further down in the mix than when I had been so impressed at Download.

MONSTER TRUCK- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 11 October 2022

Latest album ‘Warriors’ featured heavily with a third of those songs: some hit the mark, notably where they departed from their trademark sound on typical ‘Country Living’ which takes a leaf out of the Cadillac 3/Blackberry Smoke playbook,  and the title track whose chant was closer to traditional European power metal. Others were less memorable, while the two bluesier numbers- ‘For the Sun’ and ‘Seven Seas Blues’, designed for a change of pace, were in all honesty were not very exciting.

Old favourites were left to last, with ‘New Soul’ seeing Jeremy at his most crazed and Sweet Mountain River’ sounding a little like Soundgarden especially Jon’s anguished howl. There were two encores in ‘Don’t Tell me How to Live’, the crowd punching the air to its ‘Fly Like an Eagle’ chorus and ‘The Lion’, which again I found rather average. Nevertheless it ended a solid show and few could feel short changed by an excellent evening’s music with two bands who put their heart and soul into live performance.

Quick plays: MOON LETTERS, SILVER NIGHTMARES, MITCHELL’S KISS OF THE GYPSY

MOON LETTERS Thank You From The Future

MOON LETTERS Thank You From The Future  Website

Moon Letters hail from Seattle having formed in 2016 and this is their second album. Their line-up consists of guitarist Dave Webb, vocalist and flautist Michael Trew, drummer Kelly Mynes, bassist Mike Murphy and keyboardist John Allday.

Moon Letters are definite lovers of 70s prog and psychedelia with nods to Yes, Gentle Giant and Genesis. In fact on a song like ‘Isolation and Foreboding’ you’d be mistaken for thinking you are listening to some long lost prog album from that era. Full of harmony vocals, Moogs and more time changes than a horologist’s workshop. ‘Child Of Tomorrow’ unleashes yet more musical delights and one for the headphones to capture the song in all it’s glory.

Lovers of classic 70s prog need to check out Moon Masters pronto. Impressive. ***1/2

SILVER NIGHTMARES Apocalypsis

SILVER NIGHTMARES Apocalypsis Bandcamp

Formed in Palermo in 2018 by bassist Gabriele Esposito, drummer Alessio Maddaloni and keyboardist Gabriele Taormina, Silver Nightmares, now release their debut album ‘Apocalypsis’. It is a concept album concerning the historical excursus of the human beings headed for a reckoning.

It is the musicality that attracts the listener on this one, be it the horns on ‘Saphiens’ or the strings and guitars mix on ‘Intangible’. Grandiose and pomp to the max! ‘The Weird Black Cross’ recalls Brit prog/power metal band Intense, as the song is indeed an intense listen.

I am still not overly taken by the vocals – sorry! However, it is a decent prog metal listen and the band have certainly crafted an enjoyable concept piece. ***

KOTG30 Unfinished Business

MITCHELL’S KISS OF THE GYPSY Unfinished Business MR Records

As Kiss Of The Gypsy celebrate thirty years since their release of their debut album they have seemingly split into two factions. This version features vocalist Tony Mitchell, as he explains, “Even though KOTG was only a small part of my journey, I was & still am very grateful to all the fans that supported us & continue to support my work. As it is the 30th anniversary, I thought the time was now right & I would write a brand new KOTG album rather than just bonus tracks for the solo album & so went head on into prioritizing this.”

He’s joined a by a top draw line-up of British based rock musicians – Demon’s Paul Hume and Nigel Ogden, Dare bassist Nigel Clutterbuck and Ten’s Darrel Treece-Birch.

There are some proper, fists in the air rockers like ‘Duty To Party’ and ‘Remedy’.'Foolin’ has a more bluesier sound, whilst ‘Sin City’ suits Tony Mitchell’s grittier vocals to a tee. Cracking bit of slide guitar play from David Hinds of the Bounty Hunters.

The musical stops are pulled out on the ballad ‘Time To Heal’. Big production, big guitar solo and big gospel inspired backing vocals provide the album’s stand out moment.

‘Wild Horses’ rounds the album off in style.

The musicians around Mitchell add the music’s overall appeal as they sound like a band who have been around for ages and have that natural groove, something often missing on albums released in the past few years.

Great fun and fans of not only the original Kiss Of The Gypsy album, but anyone who likes catchy hard rock are in for a real treat with this album. ***3/4

Album review: THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA – Tubular Bells 50th Anniversary Celebration

THE ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Tubular Bells 50th Anniversary Celebration

Cleopatra Records [Release date 28.10.22]

The question has to be asked.  Do we really need another take on the classic ‘Tubular Bells’?  It has to be one of the most re-worked pieces  not least by Mike Oldfield himself. Well, it is the 50th anniversary in 2023 so that might be a good enough excuse and with more dates planned next year to perform this version live.

Oldfield himself performed the first orchestral version with the RPO in 1974 but I assume for the latest recording he was too busy peeling grapes and consulting the stock market from an island retreat.

What this new release brings is a very pleasant and jaunty orchestral arrangement and the might of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  You may have seen the recent Bond at 60 music gig at the Royal Albert Hall and should have been impressed with essentially the same orchestra’s playing.  They captured the spirit, if not always realised by the variable succession of singers.

No such problem with instrumental music, although the Viv Stanshall master of ceremonies place is taken robustly by the beloved Brian Blessed.

Tubular Bells part 1 and 2 is complemented on Disc 1 by ‘Sailor’s Hornpipe’ whilst on Disc 2 we get a similarly impressive rendition of ‘Ommadawn Part 1′,  ‘Hergest Ridge’ and the more commercial ‘Moonlight Shadow’ featuring vocalist Ella Shaw.

This excellent album is – typically with Cleopatra releases – let down by a complete lack of recording and personnel detail.  It is evident that the orchestra is supplemented by a fine “session” band – as trumpted on the cover – but we don’t know their names.  Otherwise, all credit to Simon Dobson the arranger/conductor and the London Contemporary Voices Choir who really enhance this interpretation.  ****

Album review: 25 YARD SCREAMER – Nemesis

25 YARD SCREAMER - Nemesis

White Knight Records [Release date 07.10.22]

Welsh trio 25 Yard Screamer, now it seems a duo, captured our attention in 2007 with their magnum opus ‘Cassandra”.  That year they appeared on our Rising Stars stage at Cambridge Rock.  Since that time we’ve quietly followed their progress through four more albums.

Inspired by a collective love of Rush, they’ve never quite replicated the heights of that 2007 opus but followed a varied stylistic path that is often very heavy and very metal.  The band are now signed to the Rob Reed (Magenta) label and maybe Rob has instilled some levity.

Musically, as ever, the real delight are Nick James vocals and – a plus point – there are some shorter tracks – ‘Incidence’ , ‘Gravity’ – which may even garner airplay! Wow!  This album is far more accessible than more recent offerings.  More people, certainly, need to hear this.

The mostly instrumental ‘Breathe’ is a standout with a reflective guitar melody over a persistent and attractive acoustic motif.  Both this, and ‘The Vibrations Of Speech’ also feature whispered vocals and, overall, the use of a wide palette of sounds always keeps things interesting.  At times, especially opening track ‘Adrift’, I was reminded of the excellent Burntfield release which I raved about in 2021.

In short, ‘Nemesis’ is atmospheric  prog and is closer to ‘Cassandra’.  For that reason it places the band on a much more comfortable trajectory, one which was convincing in 2007 and – 15 years later – still resonates.  With age, and perseverance perhaps, comes wisdom.  ****

Album review: CLIMB ABOARD MY ROUNDABOUT (British Toytown Sounds, 1967-1974)

Cherry Red [Release date: 28.10.22]

The British Toytown Pop Sound of the late sixties was not a genre with staying power, but it was fun while it lasted. The very nature of its aesthetic – vaguely humorous songs describing mythical events and places, populated by often eccentric, make believe characters (‘Uncle Joe The Ice Cream Man’; ‘Phoebe’s Flower Shop’; ‘Auntie Mary’s Dress Shop’; ‘Mr Moody’s Garden’; ‘Mrs Murphy’s Budgerigar’) – suggested a melt in the mouth confectionary, one that would be gone in one swallow.

And yes, that was the reality in some cases. But in many others, the perfomances, and the songwriting – especially the songwriting – gave the material an appeal that saw many of these vinyl singles rack up significant sales.

One that didn’t, ‘The Skeleton And The Roundabout’ proved to be one of the most influential. The song, and the band, The Idle Race, kick started the careers of Jeff Lyne and Roy Wood, who would go on to form The Electric Light Orchestra.

And again, some of the better known names, Ambrose Slade (later just Slade), David Bowie, The Mindbenders (later 10cc), The Herd (where Peter Frampton began), The Spencer David Group, The Shadows, all dipped their toes into Toytown Pop, with varying degrees of success.

Many of the songs transcended their modest ambitions.

‘It’s The Best Seaside Town In The World’ came from the Frabjoy And Runcible Spoon. Earlier this year we described this track in a review of their resurrected album as full of ‘slick, oven ready wordplay and melodic artistry’. Ultimately, the duo became known as Godley & Creme.

Not many bands can claim to have toured with the legendary Captain Beefheart.

Brit band, Kaleidescope supported him and his band on their European tour in 1973. Their nod to Donovan’s ‘Jennifer Juniper’, titled ‘Jennifer Artichoke’ is here along with the perhaps less notable ‘Glorious House Of Arthur’ in the band’s Fairfield Parlour guise.

Clifford T Ward charted with several singles in the early seventies. His track here, ‘The Dubious Circus Company’ is a standout, along with other genuine trailblazers, like ‘Excerpt From A Teenage Opera’, from Keith West (Mark Wirtz), and ‘Ha Ha Said The Clown’, written and recorded by Tony Hazzard, and later a huge hit for Manfred Mann Band.

Climb Aboard My Roundabout proves to be yet another meticulously researched and expertly curated anthology from Cherry Red Records.

87 tracks and four hours later, you’ll be the world’s leading expert on Toytown Pop. ****

Album review: TURKISH DELIGHT – Volume 1

TURKISH DELIGHT - Volume 1

Escape Music [Release date 21.10.22]

Turkish Delight celebrates the joy that Escape Music co-owner Khalil Turk has for the kind of music he loves so much, namely AOR and melodic rock. This selection was personally chosen by Khalil, with material from the likes of Steve Overland (FM), Chris Ousey (Heartland), Steve Morris (Ian Gillan/Heartland), Steve Newman and Tommy Denander.

Musician wise guests appearing include Ronnie Platt (Kansas), Billy Greer (Streets/Kansas), Billy Sheehan, Gary Pihl (Sammy Hagar/Boston/Alliance), Jeff Pilson (Dokken), Jeff Scott Soto, Mike Slamer, Joel Hoekstra (Whitesnake), Mark Mangold, Mark Stanway, Mat Sinner, Marco Mendoza, Ricky Phillips (Styx), Robin Beck, Robin Mc Auley, James Christian (House Of Lords) and the aforementioned Steve Overland.

‘Live Again’ features Kansas vocalist Ronnie Platt and has a whiff of that band’s 80s sound. This is followed by ‘Crazy Days’ with Jerome Maza at the mic, a singer who sounds uncannily like former Kansas vocalist Styeve Walsh. No surprise then that the song’s sound has a nice bit of 70s Kansas pomp about it.

For a bit of straight ahead hard rock the Billy Greer fronted ‘Bad Enough’ and Jeff Scott Soto on ‘Harder They Fall’ (tasty bit of Hammond playing on this courtesy of Alessandro Del Vecchi) will do nicely.

Liking the Terry Brock performance on ‘Get Out Of Here’, shades of Strangeways and about time we had some new music from him. Lee Small takes things down a bluesier road on ‘Hangman’s Blues’, complete with a Joel Hoekstra guitar solo. Tony Harnell fits the AOR-tastic ‘Take It Away’ perfectly, a song written by Michael Landau joining Steve Overland and Tommy Denander, both of whom feature on the song.

‘Belly Of The Beast’ is the ballad moment, made a little more pomp by Mark Mangold’s keyboards flourishes. Chris Ousey gives an impassioned vocal performance too. ‘Sweet Serenity’ obviously sounds like House Of Lords given that James Christian is singing, with Robin Beck on backing vocals. Possibly the weakest song on offer but still better than many melodic rock songs released this year.

Despite the number of writers and musicians involved the whole album holds together well, helped as the theme running through the album is to create enjoyable and top quality melodic rock.

Turkish Delight indeed! Dip into this box of musical delights (for vinyl lovers this is available as a limited edtion double LP and there are two songs exclusive to this version) if you have any love of highly polished AOR and melodic rock tunes. ***1/2

Album review: STRYPER – The Final Battle

Frontiers [Release date: 21.10.22]

Stryper are a talented, durable, outspoken band, and well before their gradual drift from AOR to Hard Rock to Heavy Metal they were strongly influenced by what they observed around them, and accordingly expressed their beliefs in song.

The core of the band remains Michael Sweet, Robert Sweet and Oz Fox. Personal health problems have no doubt thrown a shadow over much of what they write and record nowadays.

When we reviewed their last album, “Even The Devil Believes”, we noted that it might just be Stryper’s most significant recording, one where they’ve felt free to speak openly without restraint. The Heavy Metal genre has always seemed the most suitable place to do that, and their direction of travel is maintained here.

Musically, melodically, The Final Battle mines the motherlode of Classic Metal they’ve been gravitating toward, and it seems to come easy now.

Vocalist/ Writer/ Guitarist/ Producer, Michael Sweet again lets loose a high pitched howl as he strides onto the melodic metal battlefield that belongs to ‘Transgressor’, the album’s opening track. This “war cry” has become a Heavy Metal Kitemark as much as a statement of intent, branding the band’s music as metal we can trust.

Standout track, ‘Rise To The Call’ was released as a trailer single earlier this year. It comes barrelling out the speakers like a juggernaut, powerful, melodic and single minded. The band might be looking back on the long road travelled and sizing up the the shorter road ahead, but this feels fresh.

The galloping rhythms of ‘Same Old Story’s old school metal and the emphatic, pared down ‘Out, Up and In’ provide some variation to the blueprint, and elsewhere, song titles like ‘No Rest For The Wicked’ and ‘Heart And Soul’ just about tell their own story.

No argument, in the best sense of the word, Sweet is a journeyman. He knows that simple, well written metal, surefooted, with not too many moving parts, punctuated by his nasal howl, gets the job done. ****

Gig review: THE SHEEPDOGS – Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

There seems no end to a newer generation of bands drawing their inspiration from the classic rock sounds of the late sixties and seventies. One such are The Sheepdogs, from Saskatchewan in rural Canada, though they have actually been around since 2012. I must admit their name previously put me off, as well as the hirsute hipster image that so many of these retro rockers hyped by Classic Rock magazine share.

However two fellow rock journos with similar tastes raved about them and in doing so namechecked some of my favourite bands, so curiosity finally got the better of me when they announced this date at the Electric Ballroom- their second London show this year following one at Lafayette, which may have accounted for the venue probably only being around half to two thirds full for a Sunday show.

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

There was also an interesting support act in The Hanging Stars, a home-grown band previously unfamiliar to me, but who also had an ear for vintage American sounds, not least as one of three guitarists Joe Harvey-Whyte played pedal steel for much of the set. There was a highly impressive opener in ‘Ava’, which the rest of the set did not quite live up to. ‘Summer in Her Eyes’ was a good demonstration of their harmonies like the Byrds or Crosby Stills and Nash, though they showed a little of that indie surliness and only came to life when singer Richard Olson dedicated ‘I Don’t Want to Feel So Bad Anymore’ to the Conservative Party, before they ended with the lengthy country noir of ‘Mother of Earth’.

It was always going to be a night to spot influences in The Sheepdogs set, and they were many and varied. As they opened with ‘Rock and Roll Ain’t no Simple Thing’ it was clear they included some of the less usual ones among bands of their ilk, such as fellow countrymen Bachman Turner Overdrive, the Marshall Tucker Band and the pre-Michael McDonald Doobie Brothers.  Catchy melodies in ‘Who’ and ‘Downtown’ were received well by a crowd of a mixed age – with more than a few Canadians- who knew all the material much better than me.

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

The two lead guitarists cut contrasting figures:  tall, bear-like waistcoated singer Ewan Currie, guitar strapped high to his chest, and his slightly built sidekick Ricky Paquette pulling some low poses and with a slightly more metallic style. I didn’t realise the latter is a new recruit so was in no position to make comparisons with his highly rated predecessor Jimmy Bouskill.

The slower ‘Bad Lieutenant’  saw both guitarists trade off solos with Ewan’s keyboardist brother Shamus, but their biggest single influence seemed to be the Alllman Brothers, and both the swampy ‘How Late How Long’ and the insistent riffing of ‘Southern Dreaming’ were like discovering lost tracks of theirs though, unlike the southern rock pioneers, they kept the jamming to a minimum.

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

New song ‘Keep On Loving You’ (no not that one) showed off their mellower soft rock side, before more twin lead harmonies on ‘Find the Truth’. ‘I Wanna Know You’, starting with a riff that reminded me of Sweet’s ‘Windy City’ (which in turn lifted from Woman from Tokyo!) saw vocal contributions from bassist Ryan Gullen, who handled many of the introductions and won the unofficial band retro fashion contest  with his 1970’s big glasses and handlebar moustache .

The vocals were shared around with Shamus singing the mellow ‘Are You A Good Man’ and even drummer Sam Corbett taking a turn on ‘So Far Gone’, adding keys and percussion while a drum machine took his place on this number which had a Mungo Jerry or T Rex  type stomp to it. You could tell the band were having fun even though their persona was low-key in that typically Canadian way.

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

‘I’m Gonna Be Myself’ was another where the twin guitar interplay was prominent, while ‘Scarborough Street Fight’ had a heavier, more muscular edge that reminded me of Pat Travers before culminating in a Foghat-esque jam, and ‘Jesse Please’ also had a Skynyrd/Allmans feel. In among the seventies influences there was just the odd nod to a more recent generation of retro rockers, notably ‘Feeling Good’ which boasted a fuzz guitar tone and called to mind the Black Keys.

‘I Don’t Know’ was another crowd pleaser before Ewan asked people to dance to ‘Nobody’: it began as a relatively stripped back pop song with a catchy ‘nobody’s gonna bring me down’ chorus, only to break into a jam with the guitars having a very Wishbone Ash pitch to them.

THE SHEEPDOGS- Electric Ballroom, London, 9 October 2022

First encore ‘The Way It Is’ was the more usual retro blues rock fare, before ‘Learn to Burn’, which began almost psychedelic in nature and harking back to the sixties, before mushrooming into  a lengthy guitar ‘wig out’ and a three guitar jam, involving Shamus who then even broke off for a mid-song trombone solo!

After a value for money set of over an hour and three quarters and 19 songs, I haven’t been so impressed with an unfamiliar catalogue in a long time and musically they were right up my alley. I may be late to the party but my instinct proved the right one, and I think I may have discovered a new favourite band and was wondering why it had taken me so long.

Album review: TRAGIK – Cry For Love

Rock Company Records [Release date 14.10.22]

Album number eleven I believe by Tragik who feature Phil Vincent (vocals, bass, keys), Dirk Phillips (drums), and Damian D’Ercole (guitars). Once again Jacob Hansen has mastered the album.

‘Thrill Of It All’ and ‘Chasing Heaven’ are meat ‘n’ potatoes hard rockers that Tragik do so well. Plenty of guitar crunch coupled with memorable choruses. ‘Alias’ and ‘Anymore’ tip a hat the 80s hard rock sound of the likes of Dokken and Winger. Plenty of air guitar action to be had and instant on the ears choruses.

‘One Eyed Jack’ taps into Phil Vincent’s love of the Beatles, featuring one of the album’s stand out guitar solos. Speaking of guitar, there are a couple of guitar instrumentals on the album ‘Farewell, Mr Beck’ worthy of note.

The title track sees the band stretch themselves into six minutes plus of classy melodic hard rock.

Tragik crank up the guitars for their version of ‘Spirit In The Sky’, which has a real punk vibe about it – a far cry from the original’s psychedelic sound!

Tragik, and indeed the music of Phil Vincent, flies under most people’s musical radar which is a shame as this is another quality piece of melodic hard rock. Much more consistent musically than many of the project albums that are flooding the market at the moment. Give it a go. ***1/2

Album review: IRON ALLIES – Blood In Blood Out

AFM Records [release date: 21.10.02]

Iron Allies is a band with an impressive Metal heritage. It’s Herman (Accept/ Victory/ Moondoc) Frank’s new band, and if ever an artist invokes the genre it is he. He’s brought in another well known name, David (Accept/ Bonfire/ Bangalore Choir) Reece to handle the vocals.

Together they take on a number of heavy metal tropes, as you might expect, but never lean on them too hard, favouring melody over muscle, despite Frank’s macho language in the PR stuff.

The duo’s songs quake with pneumatically powered riffs, Frank’s axework bites and stings, but the songs are always nailed solidly to the framework of an outstandingly sturdy melody. ‘Destroyers of The Night’ and ‘Blood On The Land’ are prime examples. Two artists fighting their heavy metal weight, but picking their punches swiftly and sweetly.

The real knockout blows come later with Reece’s scorched voice breathing fire on ‘Evil The Gun’, an allegory for our times, and the undiluted angst of ‘Martyrs Burn’.
An underrated lyricist, Reece’s narratives work their way under your skin. ‘Selling Out ‘ and ‘Truth Never Mattered’ are powerful and persuasive, going toe to toe with Frank’s incendiary axework and the rhythm section’s dynamic percussive thump.

It’s a delight to hear two seasoned musicians balancing an unflinching toughness with genuine sentiments. ****

Album Review: C85 (3CD Various Artists)

Cherry Red [release date: 21.10.22]

Taking its lead from NME’s ultra successful C86, this 72 track, triple CD release, C85, celebrates the rise and rise of the Indie band in the UK.

In 1986, NME scribe Neil Taylor had the foresight to bundle together a bunch of tracks from Indie bands that were beginning to breakthrough, thanks to his weekly columns. It was titled C86, a trailbazing release that truly locked onto the fast developing Indie band sound, and sold in the hundreds of thousands.

Taylor had astutely observed that the Popular music terrain was now fertile ground for something different. Punk had just about burnt itself out and rock had found itself in an MTV/ FM Radio cul-de-sac.

Cherry Red’s C85 is an exciting collection, even if just for the fact – in many cases – it steps back a year, to 1985, and gives us the first glimpse of many, many bands who went on to achieve varying degrees of success.

In the case of the Jesus And Mary Chain that first glimpse was ‘Never Understand’, their debut single from the massive Psychocandy album. And there’s loads more here – the very early ‘Delightful’ from the The Happy Mondays’ Forty Five EP is on disc1; Primal Scream’s ‘All Fall Down’ is here… described by Allmusic as “Better than the rest”; The Wedding Present’s ‘The Moment Before’ was championed right into the charts by John Peel,

The (heavily touted) The Loft is here, a band who deservedly featured large on Cherry Red’s Creation Artefact CD release in 2015.

And more … The Stone Roses, The Soup Dragons, The Housemartins, and more … That Petrol Emotion, James, The Primitives, Del Amitri. And so on.

Great liner notes too, full of pics and unfussy but relevant facts, providing the genre with the respect it well deserves.

And for lovers of the arcane, Bob Hope To Die, Ronnie Can You Hear Me, The Stitched-Back Foot Air Man, and Grab Grab The Haddock are all here too. Wonder what ever happened to them? ****

Gig review: HOWARD JONES TRIO – The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, 16 October 2022

HOWARD JONES TRIO - The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, 16 October 2022

“I just want to reassure you that we are actually here, not holograms.” It’s an usual way to open a show, but, having seen the technological marvel that is ABBA Voyage a few days previously, Howard Jones wants to emphasise the humanity at the heart of tonight’s show.

Flanked by the eternally youthful Nick Beggs on otherworldly bass and the equally dazzling guitar skills of Robin Boult, Jones looks dapper in a sparkling collared black suit, seated behind his keyboard.

Having first seen him at Live Aid from halfway back of that cavernous space, it was a pleasure to be so close to the performer in the intimate and sonically perfect environment of The Apex, the stripped back nature of the acoustic show really letting the songs breathe.

With anecdotes between each song, it was a perfect evening to appreciate the career spanning set that showed just how fertile and classy a catalogue Jones has, new numbers standing shoulder to shoulder with those from his 1980’s emergence into the airwaves of the world.

Unlike some of his peers, his voice is still a thing of wonderful tones as he goes from the subtle lows to the joyful highs and everywhere in-between. He’s certainly no slouch on the keys either, his playing just as fluid and characterful as his two cohorts.

A high energy ‘Assault and Battery’ kicks off the evening, its bright rhythm shot through with the kind of cool licks that Steely Dan made their own, the following ‘Specialty’ blending its heavy jazz intro with the soaring pop of the chorus.

After these workouts, it was time to slow things down a little and the shimmering ‘Formed by the Stars’ featured some wonderfully delicate fretwork by Boult. Another turn came with the smoky and hopeful ‘Someone You Need’, the Jones and Duncan Sheik co-write having touches of the West End/Broadway musical style that the latter has made his career from.

HOWARD JONES TRIO - The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, 16 October 2022

Throughout the show, shafts of emotional light shone from the stage, brighter than any coloured beam from the rig hanging from the ceiling, connecting the audience to the songs in a way that big, bombastic gigs struggle to do so fully.

There was no sense of the maudlin or overly introspective here though and even when ‘Don’t Always Look at the Rain’ was introduced with a hot off the press story about the execution of the Ukranian conductor Yuriy Kerpatenko by Russian forces, this was sensitively used to highlight the songs lyrics of hope.

With some surprising and highly amusing stories peppered throughout alongside the music, the night certainly had more than a few moments of joy and laughter. There was a tangible and genuine warmth on stage too between the trio, tales and exchanges spoken as much to Beggs and Boult as to the audience, the three sharing smiles.

Of course, the big hits were all present and correct, the audience joining in with fulsome vigor that shook off the sloth of any Sunday evening torpor but some of the best moments were caught through the prism of the later tracks of his career that didn’t necessarily make the charts. The irresistible Latin groove that subtly colours ‘Tomorrow is Now’ and the rolling ‘Everlasting Love’ with its Beatles feel, were both examples of this very thing.

The biggest reactions inevitably were going to be received by the 80’s smashes and ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ and ‘No One is to Blame’ were met by huge cheers, a gorgeous ‘What is Love’ played with dazzling musicianship by the three and ‘New Song’ a veritable firework of sounds that set the synapses ablaze.

It was just down to ‘Hide and Seek’ to close the night, a thing of atmospheric and fragile wonder that left a hauntingly evocative echo ringing around the hall. With friend and fellow musician Nik Kershaw amongst the cheering audience, Jones bowed at the front of the stage, Beggs and Boult joining him, their work done and the world a better, brighter and more hopeful place. Life affirming and positive, more evenings should be as good as this.

EP review: BASTETTE – Awakening

BASTETTE - Awakening

Website [Release date 30.09.22]

Bastette, is the brain child of singer/songwriter Caroline, the alt-rock goddess and her band hail from Blackburn, having formed in early 2019, they are currently taking the rock scene by storm with lots of live performances as well as this epic second EP, ‘Awakening’.

Bastette, the Egyptian Goddess of Protection, symbolised by a lioness, was originally a stage character created by Caroline as something she could step into on stage. She says, “As a musician you are constantly developing and this next EP ‘Awakening’ is about waking up to reality. I have lived a lot of my life hiding from the truth because I couldn’t face negative things that might have been happening. It’s about owning who you truly are – Bastette is a side to me that has always been underlying…. Music has allowed me to let her loose.”

If you have seen Bastette live you will know what a lioness Caroline is!

‘Awakening’ has 4 tracks with the EP beings recorded at The Lounge, Wigan with producer Gareth Nuttall. With influences ranging from classic rock to pop, the EP provides a whistle stop taste of the (rock) world of Bastette.

‘Ficton’ is the latest single to be released just ahead of the EP. Apparently ‘Fiction’ started out as a dark, sultry, piano ballad, until the band got involved bringing drums and a Gibson to that kiss-n-tell-story-telling, this track rocks and again, Bastette is up there with the likes of Halestorm in terms of swagger and sassiness.

Caroline Kenyon says: “Fiction is about falling in love with a rockstar. What you see on stage is often the alter ego and perception isn’t quite reality. Every person has a fantasy of what they want from a lover and vice versa…. This is mine!” Watch ‘Fiction’ video HERE

‘Down’ another very relatable track, this is a soundtrack for any relationship break up … “I hate that I miss you” … haven’t we all been there?

‘Good Time Girl’ is actually my favourite track of the EP, from the melodic opening, to the huge powerful hooks, this is a stand out track in an EP packed full of class tracks!

‘Psycho’ was released in April and this track is heavier demonstrating the full range of Caroline’s powerful vocals’ and her lyrics grab you “Don’t get me wrong, I know you’re not the one……for me”

As ever this lady has story telling down to a fine art, both lyrically and in terms of presence and with an accomplished tight band behind her, this has got to be their opportunity to truly go for it, we are ready and waiting for an album, Bastette, get recording! *****

Album review: SAM SWEENEY – Escape That

Hudson Records [Release date 21.10.22]

Renowned fiddle player Bellowhead member Sam Sweeney returns with an album that ties together the threads of Sam’s musical loves; combining pop hooks and his pioneering work in the world of traditional dance tunes.

Written without ever touching the violin, Sam retreated to his attic during the lockdowns of 2020-21 and created over twenty pieces of music. These were composed almost entirely on synths and guitars, with snapshots of loved ones and memories as inspiration in a time of isolation. He devised a way of writing where he’d lay down a chord sequence and then record an improvisation over the top.

On listening back, anything that could be considered a hook would be kept, everything else was deleted and tracks developed by linking the hooks together to create dance tunes. Sam then translated the melodies back to the fiddle to produce the music on ‘Escape That’.

Joining Sam Sweeney are Jack Rutter (acoustic guitar), Ben Nicholls (bass), Louis Campbell (guitar) and Dave Mackay (piano, synths).

Opener ‘Ruby’ shows his pop sensibilities off well, making a hypnotic mix of synth, guitar and fiddle. ‘Want To Fly Want To Flee’ is a dancing delight, as is the title track, another clever mix of pop and folk.

Some folk purists may splutter in their beer but even they would tap a begrudging foot along to the likes of ‘Pink Steps’ and ‘Yoddin’. The swiftness of the fiddle playing really is a marvel and treat on the ears.

‘Don’t Worry, Trains’ (good thing with instrumentals is that you can call a tune all manner of things!) is a fine and sparkling tune to end the album on.

The talent Sam Sweeney possesses is impressive, as are the tunes on this album. Music that takes you on a journey and certainly lifts the spirits after each listen. ****

Album review: THE MOON CITY MASTERS – The Famous Moon City Masters

The Moon City Masters - The Famous Moon City Masters

Facebook [Release date 04.11.22]

The Moon City Masters, aka brothers Jordan and Talor Steinberg, unleash their 70s infused debut album upon us. Despite rivalling Nelson in the hair product stakes, the Moon City Masters have their musical roots firmly in the 70s, be it a touch of rock, AOR, soul or funk. They mix it all up with a modern sheen and create their own, highly listenable sound.

‘Takin’ It Back’ just does taking the listener back to a 70s vibe, full of rock with a funky edge. Reminds me of Canadian pomp rockers Prism. ‘Send It On’ treads a similar path, perhaps owing more to the mighty Boston in their 70s prime, especially on the acoustic guitar passages. The 70s rock party keeps on going with ‘Over Now’. On this one a tasty bit of keys playing takes centre stage, whilst on ‘Real Thing’ we go all funky a la Tommy Bolin’s solo albums.

The Moon City Masters have vocal harmonies aplenty as they complement each others vocals perfectly, none more so than on ‘Where You Wanna Run To’. You can almost feel the warmth of the sunny music coming out of the speakers…

‘Draw The Line’, with its fast guitar soloing is like the Outlaws jamming with the Allman Brothers, albeit with just the one guitarist!

Perfect set of tunes for an uplifting listen and get in early, as the Moon City Masters are surely destined for bigger things. ****

Cherry Red [release date: 14.10.22]

So much crammed into these two Eddie and The Hot Rods’ compilation CDs. So much history here. Of the band, of the nascent sound of Punk. Of the talent that flowed through the various line-ups. The ones who stayed, the ones who moved on.

Every A and B side released by these “Canvey Island R&B legends” is here. 40 tracks in chronological order.

The legendary ‘Live At The Marquee’ EP is the one that first gained the band wider public attention. Apart from the covers of ’96 Tears’, the song that ? and The Mysterians made a career out of, and a raw, racous cover of Them’s ‘Gloria’ (written by Van Morrison), the Quo like ‘Teenage Depression’ stands out. It entered the UK Charts Top 50 in 1976, and got the band onto Top Of The Pops. The then Holy Grail of best selling popular music.

The hits just kept on coming, bouncing about the UK Top Forty, then the one we all remember them for, ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’ made the Top Ten. Real recognition.

They are all here on these two discs, along with great pub rock/proto punk songs that didn’t chart, like ‘Like On The Line’ and ‘Power and The Glory’.

The booklet that accompanies the set is an example of how to do it and get right. Each single is remembered through an impressive array of detailed notes, plus a colour reproduction of the sleeve art.

Current members and former members all get a mention. All 26 of them, including Eddie.

Cherry Red has excelled itself here. ****

Album review: BLUE OCTOBER – Spinning The Truth Around

Up/Down Records [Release date: 14.10.22]

Compulsive songwriter Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October is long past previous compulsions. The only thing he’s tested positive for in recent years is Covid, and he shook that off pretty quickly.

And now this authentic storyteller and mood maestro documents the very personal tale of two lovers’ journey, with Spinning The Truth Around (part 1).

A famous, long dead poet once said that “the best writing is about strong emotions recalled in tranquility”. Furstenfeld has clearly taken that on board. Listening to Spinning… is like picking a route through a tidal wave of emotion, with each song progressively marking a stage in his marital breakdown.

His scorched voice and world weary persona lives every moment. From the poignant soul mining – “I don’t want change, we both want more” – of the title track, ‘Spinning The Truth Around’, to the heart lifting confessions – “there was you and there was me, and it was the best days of my life – of ‘Don’t Say It Wasn’t Love’.

Musically, there’s a startling but very welcome jump from the jaw droppingly intricate, hypnotic rock arrangements of ‘The Kitchen Drawer’ and ‘Shut Up I Want You to Love Me Back’ to the rootsy, pared down groove of ‘Change’ and the velvety, whispering, ‘Love Isn’t Good Enough’.

It all flows, it all makes sense. There’s a vaguely spiritual sense of desolation running through it all. It’s catharsis. No doubt Part 2 (due next year) will herald a new beginning. ****

Album review: THE DOWLING POOLE – Refuse

THE DOWLING POOLE Refuse

Bandcamp [Release date 14.10.22]

‘Refuse’, the new album from The Dowling Poole features all of the ‘digital only’ tracks the group occasionally released for short periods of time and are now collated on this physical release.  Each track has been carefully remixed and remastered, with the inlay sleeve containing some half-remembered thoughts and recollections (from Willie Dowling) and some actual facts and concise recalls (from Jon Poole) included in the CD liner notes.

The joy of this collection is the musical ideas the band cover, be it a touch of prog with ELO harmonies on ‘White Light’, the barbed pop of ‘F**k You Goodbye’ or the choral & pomp rock parts on ‘Deep Breath’.

‘Miles Checks Out’ is a beautifully crafted song, from the vocals through to the music it really should have been a hit. Speaking of hits that never were, ‘Optimum Delirium’, has that dreamy appeal of XTC and in a just world would be all over the airwaves.

‘Bricks From The Wall’ goes down an avenue inhabited by Talking Heads and Sparks. Wonderfully bizarre, yet always listenable and keeping a strong grip on melody.

The good news for fellow fans of the Dowling Poole is that the songs they recorded between 2020 and 2022 will be featured on the band’s next planned physical release.

The Dowling Poole, meaningful, melodic and above all enjoyable pop infused music. If you have any music from the likes of ELO, Squeeze, 10CC or XTC in your collection you will seriously love these guys and their songs. The best band you’ve never heard awaits your listening pleasure… ****
