EP review: EYES OF ALBION – Temple Noise

Eyes of Albion - Temple Noise

Bandcamp[Release date 17.12.21]

Any band that describes itself as: “We are stranger than fiction, more intense than realism…” immediately has my attention, if only for a Kurt Vonnegut take on rock music.

Eyes Of Albion actually formed in 2018 and ‘Temple Noise’ is their second release which has only recently benefiting from some long overdue PR.

The 5 track EP is a well crafted, but intense mix of hard, stoner, psychedelic and at times prog rock.

This is band with the vision, creativity and musical ability to push retro rock influences into a new and exciting template

The band wears its influences on its sleeve from Zeppelin to AC/DC with hints of psychedelia and always with enough heft to remind us of say Monster Magnet.

Everything is built on a beefy undertow that anchors mellifluous grooves and bone crunching riffs.

Their sonic presence is built on a raft of solid rock influences such as Zeppelin, Sabbath, Floyd, Purple and even Hawkwind.

They are powered by the powerful rhythm section of kick ass drummer Andy Mullins and the svelte bass lines of Johnny Muzz, who bring understated swagger and push them into the heavier Stoner Rock feel of bands like Kyuss.

Eyes of Albion’s musically evoke their own name. The ‘Eyes’ suggest a restless exploration of their musical horizons, while ‘Albion’ hints at a historical English legacy, in this case a durable rock legacy.

The band explores riff driven rock (stoner, classic and psychedelic rock) with a bluesy and fleeting folk into prog influence, tempered by a modal Easter flavour.

They set out their stall with the booming power chords and AC/DC style strut of ‘Fake Messiah’. Refreshingly they broaden their focus within the confines of the same song to incorporate psychedelic nuances.

They do so via Robert Kemp’s initial sludgy solo which he then transforms into Dave Gilmour territory, before a bone crunching finish.

Then there’s the 8 minute long ‘Moroccan Rain’ which features Eastern style bv’s, tabla’s and repeated thin toned guitar motif in sharp contrast to the enveloping wall of sound.

A tempo change then leads into an overarching Floydian sweep, in which they incorporate drone, stoner, proggy and Eastern elements.

Vocalist David Clinton has the range and power to effortless tackle the quiet-to-loud dynamics and he phrases with authority as the band rocks hard. Kemp’s piercing riffs are then counterweighted by the kind use of enveloping tones King Gizzard fans are familiar with.

Then there’s the psychedelic gleam of the Ozrics meets Gong, Hillage and even Dead Meadow, while they groove like King Buffalo!

‘Swirling Vortex’ musically mirrors its title, as it opens with a gently thumbed bass and acoustic reminiscent of early Hawkwind, until a powerful drum break sets up a bass led groove.

The band quickly hits its stride on a lilting rock track with an organic feel. The repeated drop-down to a pulsing bass line evokes the “Swirl” of the title, before Kemp adds slashed riffs.

‘Desert Wanderings’ is built round a stop-time gnawing riff, topped by a perfect vocal and an ascending chorus that could be Zeppelin.

Kemp’s intricate solo draws us back into a final resolving chorus and a perfunctory finish. This is rock music at its best.

There’s a palpable Sabbath and latter day Stoner influence and growling tone on the closing ‘Seventh Circle’, which is the recycled title track of their previous EP.

It comes with portentous lyrics which perfectly match Kemp’s early distorted and later outer wordly tone, achieved by what sounds like bowed guitar strings and eerie bv’s.

The more you play this EP the more it reveals. ‘Temple Noise’ has real contemporary crossover rock appeal.  The 5 tracks are played with passion, feel, intensity and innovation.

The band rises above cliché to transcend genres and forge their own style, which in the very best traditions of rock music is a mix of head banging familiarity and ground breaking originality.

The ‘Eyes’ have it! ****

CATS IN SPACE - Kickstart The Sun

CATS IN SPACE Kickstart The Sun (Harmony Factory)

The ambitious production of chief songwriter Greg Hart and Ian Caple does justice to the songs and the overall impression is that the sound is noticeably tougher than previous releases with a greater nod towards the original pomp rock and AOR behemoths from either side of the Atlantic…

For me this is not only their finest work to date but is nothing less than a masterpiece. *****

Snowy White - Driving On The 44

SNOWY WHITE Driving On The 44 (Soulfood)

‘Driving On The 44’ is an album made with love, care and attention. It feels like meeting an old friend who is still pursuing the same passion all these years later. In doing so Snowy White restates his case as one of the most underrated blues guitarist of our era. ****

H.E.A.T- Force Majeure

H.E.A.T. Force Majeure (earMUSIC)

The production is razor sharp, bringing out the sheer hugeness of the sound, while after his time away Kenny Leckremo seems a new person: his voice has greater depth and range than his predecessor, allowing the band to take the sound in different directions…

While personally I miss the old melodic and lighter H.E.A.T sound, this is a mighty impressive statement that will broaden their appeal to heavier markets.  **** 1/4

Dim Gray - Firmament

DIM GRAY Firmament (English Electric Recordings )

A beautiful album, beautifully played and if the world really is getting you down, ditch the shrink and buy this – it’ll get you through.

Exceptional.  *****

White Spirit - Right Or Wrong

WHITE SPIRIT Ready Or Not (Conquest Music)

40 years on from their promising debut album, White Spirit are back with a new line-up that captures the spirit (pun intended) of the original band, but also suggests that given a handful of decent new songs could usher in a meaningful coda to their career.

A hugely impressive effort. ****

THE DEAD DAISIES - Radiance

THE DEAD DAISIES Radiance (The Dead Daisies)

‘Radiance’ … references several decades of heavy rock and serves it up in a dramatic, contemporary fashion and always with Hughes’ midas touch.  ‘Radiance’ is quite simply heavy rock heaven and certainly one of the best in class this year. *****

Album review: DAVID SINCLAIR FOUR – Apropos Blues

Critical Discs [Release date 02.09.22]

They say you should cut your best song first and while DS4 don’t quite do that, they open with the next best thing, an adventurous single called ‘Hip-Hopping’ on which David Sinclair nails his colours to the mast.

He is unafraid to swap genres in the middle of a swinging blues shuffle, which allows special guest Glaswegian Johnny Cypher to fill the track with an autobiographical rap.

Sinclair’s urban cool – “It’s all topping, cause I’m hip-hopping” is the perfect foil for Cypher’s hyper angst: “Sick of working full-time studying accounts and percentages So I left – now I make money rapping my paragraphs instead of sentences.”

Laurie Garnham’s early introductory harp solo is also significant as it anchors a wide ranging album in the blues, while Sinclair’s observational and reflective narratives always keep the songs interesting.

‘Hip-Hopping’ is nicely juxtaposed by the clever word play and guitarist Geoff Peel’s repeated motifs on the funky riff driven ‘Borrowed Rhyme’. It’s a song on which Sinclair sticks closely to his vocal range to phrase expressively while the band locks into the groove.

As the title suggest, ‘Apropos Blues’ is very much a product of the time it was made. It’s a post-covid album in which the emphasis is on taking stock.

The album deals with weighty themes like freedom and time, while musically it balances flint like dynamics with heartfelt lyrics which the band splendidly bring to life with some inspired interplay.

This is particularly so on the title track. Were it not for the Latin and French etymology it would surely be a contemporary blues staple.

It’s an intoxicating mix of observational lyrics and some inspired jamming on the musical bridge, as Peel weaves his guitar solo into the track over the Mendoza brothers rhythm section. The brothers intuitively hover, float and glue the track together with Joss’s lilting bass line and Rory’s extravagant cymbal splashes.

It’s a musical calling card for the album as whole, on which the band swings, jams and moves to full on blues-rock, via some cool poignant meaningful blues before a Chuck Berry rock and roll bookend.

‘Apropos Blues’ revels in stylistic variety framed by Jack Sinclair’s judicious production which allows the music to breathe.  The thoughtful sequencing also facilitates a well crafted old school album with contemporary subject matter.

David Sinclair is a fine songwriter who eschews cliché and filters his ideas through a musical version of Cinéma vérité, with his own observational abilities at the core of a well balanced album.

His band does him proud by illuminating lyrical meaning and digging deep for emotional nuances, over contrasting songs of introspection and swagger.

In sum, everything starts and ends with the possibilities of a song, with the good-time Chuck Berry bookend ‘Bye Bye Johnny’ fitting comfortably into the Sinclair appreciation of the art of songwriting.

When it comes to his own abilities, he shines a light for the underdog. A brace of time based songs, ‘Years Are Gone’ and ‘No Time Left to Lose’ cleverly use different musical devices to illustrate thematic content. A perfunctory stop-time line in the former and an urgent ‘call and response’ section in the latter evoke the fast passing of time.

There’s a similar reflective feel of the above in another single ‘Won’t be Divided’. It benefits from a beautiful opening guitar-led motif, a tic-toc snare intro and a catchy hook, while Sinclair adds the perfect world-weary but defiant vocal.

Geoff Peel transforms it at the 1 minute.57second mark into a powerful funky back beat, adding a brief solo with a harmony guitar finish before revisiting the opening lick.

This song perfect distils the band’s essence, a mix of feel, versatility, fluidity and the blues, which is never too far away.

The band reaches for something extra on the poignant lyrics and blues rock bluster of ‘When Her Ship Comes Sailing In’, which finds Laurie Garnham’s harp and Geoff Peel guitar in perfect tandem.

There’s a curious Nashville feel to ‘The Bands of London’, a song about going stir crazy under lock down. In spite of the jangling guitars and sub Stones feel it plods a little and is quickly rescued by a classic Sinclair couplet:  “I wanna see the bands of London, And feel my ears ring like empty shells.”

He also uses a clever titular word play on “Fell In Love with ‘L’Amour’ and just when you think the idea doesn’t quite stretch to a memorable song, it’s rescued by effective Beatles style bv’s and a warm piano line.

In sum this is a hugely enjoyable album that engages us with meaningful words, great band interplay and Sinclair’s empathetic phrasing.

Too clever to be just a blues album, and not bluesy enough for purists, this is a potent song-driven album that represents a career high for DS4. It’s good enough to sit proudly in any self respecting rock fans collection. ****

Gig review: CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

Cardinal Black are a new band with an unexpectedly old heritage. I knew guitarist Chris Buck, from his work as an exceptionally talented guitarist in Buck and Evans, one of the most interesting of the new generation of blues-rock bands, but hadn’t been aware of his part in an act called the Tom Hollister Trio. Over a decade ago they were even taken under the wing of the legendary Alan Niven and flown to the USA and but split before recording an album, only to re-emerge during lockdown with an expanded line up and a new name.

Allied to my interest in Chris Buck’s work, I’d heard rave reviews from whose views I respect who’d seen them support Myles Kennedy and The Struts, so I was keen to catch their debut London headline show as part of an extensive tour.

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

My first thought was I had missed out on something big happening: I’d feared the Garage would be too large a venue, but it was at least three quarters full and not only with the usual suspects of 40 and 50 somethings. This was all the more remarkable for a band whose first release ‘January Came Close’ is still a few weeks away.

There was a fellow South Walian support in Laura Evans. The singer – who some of the audience may have remembered playing singer Madison in the (non-original!) Basil Brush Show – has a pleasant voice which was pushed to the forefront, as she was accompanied only by a low-key guitarist in Joe Coombes.

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

Opening with ‘Solo’ and ‘Fire with Fire’, she mentioned she drew on a variety of musical inspirations including country influences which were on view in her cover of Chris Stapleton’s ‘Arkansas’, while ‘Fool’ was one of those bluesy and soulful torch style numbers. I found myself impressed with the songwriting qualities of ‘Gone’ and ‘State of Mind’, and after ‘I’m Alright’ closed with a snatch of audience participation, her short set was definitely enough to whet the appetite for her headline shows with a full band next year.

From the moment Cardinal Black came on those qualities of Tom Hollister I’d been told about shone through. He has a casual manner, bearded, bespectacled and flat capped, but an arrestingly rich and velvety soulful voice that is a gift only a select few are blessed with. Comparisons come more naturally to the likes of Terence Trent D’Arby and Andrew Roachford than names more frequently banded about when rock vocalists are discussed. world.

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

The first few numbers, opening with ‘Rise Up’ were quite up tempo but with crisp and concise closing solos from  Chris. Already expanded to a five piece with the addition of a keyboardist who added colour in a low-key way, a fresh dimension was added when female singer Tay Cousins joined for ‘Jump In’ and stayed for the rest of the set to give the vocal arrangements an even fuller feel.

However a dominant tone was set as the night wore on of slower epics, with longer solos from Chris, showing a wonderful yet effortless feel. These included ‘Ain’t My Time’, a mix of blues and gospel, ‘In My Head’  and ‘On My Own’ (dedicated to Tom’s son). ‘I Don’t Care’ shared the slow tempo but had a rockier feel and boasted a particularly tasty Chris solo.

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

The set included the odd number from their Tom Hollister Trio days and the banter, particularly between Tom and Chris reflected their long friendship and added to the feel good atmosphere of the occasion.

‘Warm Love’ got an especially good crowd reception and the more up tempo ‘Where Did You Go’ had people dancing before the set ended in fine style with ‘Tell Me How it Feels’ – the massed vocals on the chorus giving it a gospel feel.

CARDINAL BLACK- The Garage, London, 22 September 2022

There were a pair of encores in ‘I’m Ready’, which also had a gospel vibe but moved into a faster second movement with a big vocal finale from Tom, and ‘Tied Up in Blue’, a slow blues with a predictably excellent solo and Tom showing off at the end, his voice powerful enough to carry without the aid of microphone.

Impressively for a new band they played for a marathon hour and 40 minutes without recourse to covers. While a mix of soul, rock, gospel and blues might not quite be my first choice of musical taste, the buzz building around them is fully justified as they created some very special music.

EP review: OLD GLORY & THE BLACK RIVIERA – Subtle Reminder Of Somewhere

OLD GLORY & THE BLACK RIVIERA - Subtle Reminder Of Somewhere

Facebook [Release date 12.09.22]

Old Glory & The Black Riviera are a four piece Rock band from Stoke-on-Trent (extra kudos for coming from my homeland!) consisting of Jord Davies (Vocal & Guitar), Jay Meehan (Guitar & Vocals), Aaron Pointon (Bass) and Myles Pockett (Drums).

Five songs on here, all styled in the blues rock meets southern/hard rock sound the band love and have been influenced by. Not sure why we are seeing so many UK bands sounding like US southern based rock bands but long may it continue!

Every band needs their calling card song. One you can sing-a-long to and is a staple of any live set. Old Glory & The Black Riviera’s is ‘Jealous’, a good time rocker similar to early days Black Crowes and Bad Touch (they’d be an ideal match with these guys, the Answer or Little Red Kings).

‘Waiting For You (To Come Home)’ packs a powerful punch for a ballad allowing Jord Davies to show his undoubted vocal dexterity. Guitar solo of the EP is on this song as well. ‘Miracle’ features a neat guitar riff on this southern fried rocker.

‘Had It All’ and ‘Mountain’ are the other two songs on here which are solid enough and certainly not fillers.

Old Glory & The Black Riviera impress on this EP, their first since 2018, with their own take on the classic blues rock sound. Great on the ears and I am sure a live blast too. ***1/2

Gig review: GRAND SLAM – The Victoria, Swindon, 22 September 2022

With the legend that is Laurie Mansworth (lead guitar and vocals) as the driving force for this project and his son, Dhani Mansworth on drums with his fellow Treatment members, Tagore Grey on guitar and Tao Grey on bass, ex-Piston frontman, Rob Angelico on lead vocals and newcomer to the rock scene, Isobel O’Neil on keyboards, is it any wonder there is a real sense of excitement in the room, what a sublime mix of talent!

This is their inaugural gig with a 30 minute set opening ahead of Sons of Liberty and Grand Slam, what an absolute privilege to be in this room watching and listening as they let loose with ‘Ruled by Your Love’, belting out ‘Children of the Sun’ which they have released, raising the bar again with ‘Rock & a Hard Place’ and concluding with ‘Stone in your Shoe’

They describe themselves as 70’s/80’s rock on steroids and that is pretty accurate! What is amazing is how tight this band sound together on their first ever gig, with limited time to collaborate due to tour schedules and other projects. The audience were on-side from the off and if audience response is any indicator, this band is on a stellar trajectory and I intend to hang on their coat tails as they rise.

Mansworth are working on their album which will be released in 2023.

Sons Of Liberty - The Victoria, Swindon, 22 September 2022

Here we have those established, hardest working Southern rockers, Sons of Liberty, from Bristol, with Rob Walker (Yesterday’s Gone) on lead vocals, having taken over the mantle earlier this year, and the band being on tour for pretty much all of 2022, making up for lost time and grabbing every opportunity to gig.

The Sons are a guitarist down as Andy ‘Moose’ Muse is recovering after having an emergency op in the middle of their hectic tour schedule, but he’s still with them and manning the merch table at gigs in good humour, wishing you a speedy recovery Moose, we need you back on that stage!

They may be a man down but that doesn’t show as they kick off proceedings with ‘Big Ass’ and the audience are in fine fettle by the time we get to ‘Rich Man, Poor Man’, it’s a pure showcase of good old time rock n roll with ‘Damaged Reputation’ and ‘Texas Hill Country’ which is a favourite of the new frontman. Next up is my personal favourite, ‘Don’t Hide Behind Your Weakness’ from ‘Aces & Eights’ album, which is well worth a try if you’ve not heard it yet. Fred Hale is sublime on lead guitar, whilst Mark Thomas delivers all the rhythm you need on bass and Steve Byrne is a complete legend on drums.

Concluding their energetic set with ‘Fire & Gasoline’ and ‘Ruby Starr’, the Sons have definitely liberated both Swindon and Milton Keynes, they are such a good time, feel good, rock band to see, they always deliver, man down or not. Highly recommend catching them on tour if not this year, then there’s plenty more dates already planned for 2023, I’ll see you there, cowboy hat on.

Grand Slam - The Victoria, Swindon, 22 September 2022

For those who don’t know, Grand Slam come from one hell of a pedigree, having being originally formed in 1984 by Phil Lynott, after the breakup of Thin Lizzy. Grand Slam was active for a year, prior to Lynott dying in 1986, the band was then revived in 2016 by original member Mark Stanway (keyboards) together with Laurence Archer (lead guitar).

In 2018, they recorded a new Grand Slam studio album, reworking original Grand Slam material written by Phil Lynott, Laurence Archer and Mark Stanway, as well as writing new material. The ‘Hit The Ground’ album was released in November 2019.

This new tour brings Laurence Archer (lead guitar) together with Mike Dyer (vocals), Benjy Reid (drums), Rocky Newton (bass) and FM’s Jem Davis (keyboards), honours the traditions of rock and Laurence’s song writing dynasty, but also looks to the future – the classic tracks sit alongside a set of brand new rock anthems that embody the same ethos of freedom, positivity and adrenalin that ran through Grand Slam in 1984.

So on an autumnal night in Old Town, Swindon, here we are watching an absolute master class in guitar skills and performance right from the opening track of ‘19’, the engagement with the crowd is clear, vocally Mike Dyer is superb and the set is packed to the brim with quality including ‘Hit the Ground’, ‘Military Man’ and ‘Sisters of Mercy’.

It is clear that there are many here who are thoroughly enjoying this classic rock revival that Grand Slam deliver, not to mention the sublime guitar solos from Laurence. Many that follow this band are wearing their hearts on their sleeves, the band evoking memories of good times gone by and also poignancy with the more hard hitting current tracks being dedicated to the Ukraine.

When Grand Slam conclude with ‘Parisienne Walkways’ (Laurence absolutely nails that Gary Moore solo!) and Thin Lizzy’s ‘Rosalie’, the audience are eating out of their hands. If you get the opportunity to catch them on tour, you are guaranteed a great night of live music that will feel nostalgic and current all at the same time!

Album review: ROCKING HORSE MUSIC CLUB – Circus Of Wire Dolls

ROCKING HORSE MUSIC CLUB - CIRCUS OF WIRE DOLLS

Plane Groovy Records  [Release date: 16.09.22]

Third trip into the studio for American “progressive” rock band Rocking Horse Music Club following their EP ‘Everywhere Is Home’ from 2018 and their tribute to Genesis fretmeister Anthony Phillips ‘Which Way The Wind Blows’ from 2019.

‘Circus Of Wire Dolls’ is that phrase (dreaded by most music fans) a concept album – but not only that, a “Rock Opera” (I thought we were done with these – Ed.) telling the story of a man who creates a miniature circus out of wire, string and cloth (yes, really) and how the characters reflect his own life.

It has to be said, that for this odyssey they have piped on board some of the great and good of the rock world – Ms. Amy Birks, Tim Bowness (No Man) and Chris Difford (Squeeze) as singers and David Cross (King Crimson), Kate St. John (Dream Academy) and Steve Hackett stalwarts John Hackett and Rob Townsend to add their instrumental clout.

It’s prog Jim, but with so many other influences at play – The Beatles, Beach Boys, art/glam rock and 1980’s New Wave are all here but by far the predominant influence is that of musical theatre and your enjoyment of this particular ‘circus’ depends on whether musical theatre moves you in mysterious ways.

This is the road that Welsh proggers Karnataka have taken recently and, for me, is a distinctly retrograde step.

The album is a sprawling double disc set stretching things out to 22 tracks and is one of those that would have been so much better as a single album – but, here we are.

There IS a lot of good stuff here with exemplary musicianship throughout – opener ‘Prologue:Riverside’s organ swells and chorus-pedal guitar is a good start, the title track’s insistent guitar riff has a Mike & The Mechanics vibe, the more proggy and excellent drumming of ‘Senseless Sky’, the almost punk ‘It’s Not About You’, the RPWL-esque ‘Face Of Rain’, the all-round excellence of ‘0300’ and the instrumental penultimate track ‘Circus Waltz’ which gives David Cross (violin) and Rob Townsend (sax) a chance to shine.

The bum in the custard moments concern the musical theatre, which, if you’re not into it, becomes somewhat irksome – ‘Packed Up’ mirrors the aforementioned Karnataka, ‘Every Show Must End’ has the Les Miserables nonsense of every spoken line being sung, ‘Burn’ could be The Lion King and ‘Will You Be My Downfall’ a Rice/Lloyd-Webber extravaganza.

Two tracks to avoid completely are ‘House Party At Jack’s’ (?) and the nausea-inducing turgid schmaltz of ‘All Shall Be Well’.

The apposite closer sums up the paradox here – ‘Coda: Slide Down The Cellar Door’ – is it rock? Is it a musical? In the end the jury’s out.

In summary – well worth a listen, but, like Meatloaf, a bit too verbose and occasionally cloying for the real rock fans – and probably a bit too rocky for the musicals audience.

Some great playing on it though. ***

Album review: JEFF BERLIN – Jack Songs

JEFF BERLIN - Jack Songs

jeffberlinmusicgroup.com [Release date 02.08.22]

It won’t surprise you that an artist like Jeff Berlin has a rather impressive contacts list.  He’s been providing sublime bass for any number of artists over the years including Bill Bruford and Allan Holdsworth.  On Jack Songs he assembles a veritable a-z of fusioneers including Eric Johnson and Scott Henderson.

It’s essentially a tribute to both Berlin and to Jack Bruce  starting with a Cream medley suitably entitled ‘Creamed’ which has Alex Lifeson supplying the lead solo.  Johnson comes in on the classic ‘Theme From An Imaginary Western’.  The core band includes Ron Hemby alternating vocals with Alex Ligertwood and on ‘L’Angelico Misterioso’ a moonlighting Sammy Hagar.

On the latter track, bizarrely, it follows the original fairly closely (i.e. ‘Never Tell Your Mother  She’s Out of Tune’ from 1971′s  ‘Songs For A Tailor’) replete with a horn section before Scott Henderson comes in and shreds the living daylights out of the otherwise soulful sway.  A strange juxtaposition even if called ‘Cream Jam’.

One of the highlights is ‘Rope Ladder To the Moon’ which is sensitively relayed via Berlin’s dreamy keyboards, Tracy Silverman’s violin, and some tasteful picking from ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal.  The bass breakdown section of ‘Smiles Story And Morning Grins’ features 8 bassists (yes 8!) including Tony Levin, Billy Sheehan and Geddy Lee.

Overall, do these versions add anything to the originals?  Well yes, and no.  The aim has been to rearrange Bruce’s material when considered appropriate and frequently blend two different songs.

Just to confuse matters the inclusion of ‘Traintime Time’ (a Berlin original) is perhaps the most impressive piece, straight-ahead jazz-rock fusion of the highest order.  Berlin rounds things off lending his own vocal to a sad refrain and essentially euology to his bass playing hero (with words by Bruce’s lyricist Pete Brown).

As with similar projects fans of the featured artists may want to take an interest along with those who like bass.  Bruce lovers may also be intrigued with this well intentioned and well executed tribute.  ***1/2

News: Rock music website Get Ready to ROCK! celebrates 20th anniversary (October 2022)

Get Ready to ROCK! - 20th Anniversary - 2003-2023

Popular rock music website Get Ready to ROCK! will be celebrating its 20th anniversary from October 2022.

The website soft-launched in October 2002 and since that time has become a popular destination online for authoritative music reviews and interviews.

In 2008 the website created its own dedicated radio station Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  The station reflects the broad coverage of the review website.

Says News and Reviews Editor Jason Ritchie: “From the start we have covered a wide range of styles and genres in the main reflecting our reviewers’ interests.  We cover rock, blues, singer songwriter, progressive as well as more eclectic artists.”

Managing Editor David Randall added: “Unique amongst websites over an extended period we have retained a core team of really well informed reviewers who are experts in their field  and very good writers.  This gives our website credibility and continuity.”

“From a promotional point of view, for labels and artists, our coverage has been persistently at the top of Google when searching for specific albums or gig reviews.  In an age when many value instant exposure via social media our reviews have both early visibility but also great longevity.”

To coincide with the anniversary year launch David has written a 2000 word essay about the state of rock music in 2022.  This is based on his own observations over two decades.

“Most recently rock music has been affected by the pandemic but also, going forward, an economic crisis.  It’s never easy for rock artists especially new bands but we have tried to highlight the realities whilst we continue to support new artists who may have limited access to more mainstream – including print – media.”

By the end of 2022 the reviewers will list their favourite albums and live acts during a twenty year period.  This will coincide with the website’s usual end of year “Best of” selections for albums, live and breakthrough acts.  This listing has become a useful archive for significant albums and artists for any given year since 2013.

The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness - Coming January 2023

Every month in 2023 (until October) the website will announce a nominated band for “The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness”, a variant of the “Hall of Fame” concept.

Says Jason: “We will be recognising the achievements of 10 selected artists who have consolidated their appeal since the early millennium, or grown their fanbase, via quality albums and live shows.  They’ll have featured regularly in our pages and we’ll be highlighting our archive but also updating with new material.  Genre experts will also contribute their own analysis.”

Additional information

Get Ready to ROCK! was started in 2002 by David Randall whose background was in website creation for a number of artists and labels and as a published author.  Jason Ritchie had started a “Classic Rock Newswire” blog and approached David to contribute reviews to a rock review website that he managed.  The idea of their own review website was born.

Get Ready to ROCK! Radio broadcasts 18 hours a day and was launched in 2008.  The playlist reflected activity at the review website whilst expanding the number of interviews.  The online radio player links to an associated album review where possible.

Although primarily a continuous music station, David Randall and Pete Feenstra present regular shows.  Pete is a music impresario/writer and blues expert and has won several awards for his informed broadcasting.

Album review: SIOBHAN MILLER – Bloom

SIOBHAN MILLER - Bloom

Proper Music [Release date 16.09.22]

Siobhan Miller was like many artists releasing a new album just as the covid epidemic started, curtailing any touring plans and coverage for any new music. Now we are back into vaguely normal times again Siobhan Miller returns with her latest album which sees her cover Scottish songs (bar the closing track ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ which is of Irish origin).

It is a real feel good album that also proved a joy to record apparently as Siobhan was reunited with the all-star line-up from her award-winning second album 2017′s ‘Strata’, including Orcadian singer/guitarist and long-time collaborator Kris Drever (Lau), Eddi Reader, Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow) and guitarist Ian Carr (Kate Rusby Band).

Where to start with highlights? Opening with the Andy M. Stewart penned ‘Queen Of Argyll’ sees a high standard set and do check out the Silly Wizard version. ‘Go, Move, Shift’ by Ewan McColl, his powerful protest song based on traveller Mindy Smith, who was ‘moved on’ while giving birth in her caravan by local police. Still resonates in  today’s world sadly.

Folk music loves a good murder and body count, which ‘The Swan Swims’ – a tale of one sister killing another – and ‘The Battle Of Waterloo’ provide on here.

The rousing Rab Noakes tune ‘Open All Night’ is a joyous mix of folk, jazz, pop and above all, a song to put a spring in your step and lift the spirits.

The singing alone of Siobhan Miller should be enough to see this album nestle in your music collection. One of the finest singers in folk music at the moment. There is the added bonus that many of these songs are well known and all benefit from the magical musical touch of Siobhan Miller and her musical companions. ****

Gig review: STEVE HACKETT – Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow – 23rd Sept 2022

Many classic rock bands are now in the position where every year is either the 40th or 50th anniversary of something, formation, landmark tours, album releases, you name it. What this does is allow bands the opportunity to cash in on, sorry, celebrate, their heritage and it allows fans to hear the classics one more time.

With Steve Hackett’s Genesis back catalogue now hitting the big 5-0 it was no surprise when his latest tour was entitled ‘Foxtrot at Fifty and Hackett Highlights’, promising the said album played in its entirety along with other Hackett classics, an enticing package…

Over the last few years Steve’s live sets have consisted of two parts and tonight was no different. The first 45 minutes were to be given over to highlights of his solo career then, following a quick break, the band would return for the Genesis set.

Opening the first set tonight was the instrumental ‘Ace Of Wands’ which demonstrated ably how good all the musicians on stage were and confirmed we were in for a good night. Nad Sylvan then joined the stage to provide vocals on ‘Devil’s Cathedral’ which Steve explained is an everyday tale of love, infidelity, death and marriage, not necessarily in that order!

A spiritual ‘Spectral Morning’ followed with sublime fretwork from Mr Hackett before a fantastic version of ‘Everyday’ proved to be an early set highlight. The jagged riff to ‘A Tower Struck Down’ had been written, according to Steve, by his brother John and he advised that you can’t dance to it!

The song proved to be one of the heavier moments of the night and finished off with an extended bass solo by Jonas Reingold disproving the old adage that bass players are the lowest common denominator in the band. Reingold would also show his six-string prowess later in the night, a true all-rounder.

The bass solo led into ‘Camino Royale’ from 1983’s ‘Highly Strung’ album which was great to hear with Steve again on great form. The solo set then ended with the end section of ‘Shadow Of The Hierophant’ with the incessant riff building steadily from quiet beginnings into a glorious, climactic ending complete with Reingold’s bass pedals sending seismic tremors through the hall, shaking it to it’s very foundations. On that ground moving note, Steve announced that they would be back in 20 minutes with Foxtrot and the band left the stage to huge applause.

Anticipation was high as the lights dimmed once more for the Foxtrot set. Roger King was bathed in light as he played the dramatic keyboard opening section of ‘Watcher Of The Skies’. The rest of the band then joined in on the staccato riff, whilst Nad climbed to a platform at the rear of the stage with lights providing him with burning red eyes. Always one of my favourite Genesis songs, tonight’s version didn’t disappoint.

The gentle strains of ‘Time Table’ followed providing a brief respite before ‘Get Em Out By Friday’ took the pace back up again with Nad doing a great job on the narrative vocal with a bit of help from Steve and Rob Townsend in the mid-section.

One track that seldom makes a setlist is ‘Can-Utility and the Coastliners’ and on tonight’s showing it is one that needs to make a more regular appearance. With a great melody and sublime playing by all the band it was a joy to hear.

Steve then took centre stage, seated with acoustic in hand, for ‘Horizons’. His playing on the track was mesmerising and for any aspiring guitarists it either gave you a life goal or sent you home to burn your guitar in the realisation that you will never achieve that virtuoso pinnacle.

That just left the closing track from the Foxtrot album, a little number entitled ‘Supper’s Ready’. From the opening bars, with Steve and Jonas Reingold perfectly in tune on the dual guitar parts, to the closing extended solo from Steve, the epic track was stunning. Nad, again, excelled on the vocals ably tackling all the nuances throughout the song originally created by Mr Gabriel. The cheers at the end were deafening and well deserved, what a way to end the 50th birthday party for the Foxtrot album!

However, it wasn’t quite the end of the night as the guys returned to the stage for another couple of songs starting with a crowd favourite in the shape of ‘Firth Of Fifth’. The song is another tour de force for Steve, with his mid song solo showing once again why the crowds turn up annually for their fix of classic Genesis.

Drummer Craig Blundell, who had played up a storm all evening, then got a chance to shine as the band launched into ‘Los Endos’. The traditional set closer impressed once more with the whole band giving their all one last time, what a way to close out a fantastic night.

Steve Hackett may have turned 72 but he shows no signs of slowing down and his playing is as impressive as ever. Coupled with a group of excellent musicians he is keeping alive the Genesis legacy and tonight proved once more that the appetite to hear the songs live has not abated.

We are now into a run of Genesis albums reaching that 5o year milestone, fingers crossed Steve will be around to light the candles again over the next few years.

Album review: BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN – Crazy Town

BETH NIELSEN CHAPMAN - Crazy Town

Cooking Vinyl [Release date 23.09.22]

This is Beth Nielsen Chapman’s thirteenth solo album and her first in ten years, as well as her debut release on Cooking Vinyl. Produced by 5-time Grammy Award winner Ray Kennedy (who’s worked with Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Shania Twain, John Mellencamp and many more), Beth says about this album “It’s about navigating chaos. How, even despite everything being crazy, on some level one can trust that things are in divine order and that we will be OK.”

It is an intriguing and enjoyable musical jamboree opening with a co-write with Graham Gouldman (10CC), ‘All Around The World’, a feisty pop song with a country edge. Then there is the upbeat eco rocker ‘The Universe’, another single release methinks, next to the gentle refrains of the single ‘With Time’. ‘Everywhere We Go’ taps into her blues side, a jaunty number and one with a message of hope.

Beth re-records ‘Put A Woman In Charge’, which was written and released with Keb Mo and featured Rosanne Cash, giving it her own spin. A powerful declaration of female leadership that is more humanitarian than political. A noble sentiment, just not sure it works right now here in the UK…anyway, moving on… ‘Pocket Of My Past’ is a groovy number, plenty of soul in the backing, again highlighting Beth’s versatility.

The stripped back blues of ‘Hey Girl (We Can Deal With It)’ is one of my songs of 2022. Loving the vocals, as well as the musical arrangement. The guitar sneaks in and out of the song, then we have a harmonica solo which would get even the most reluctant feet tapping.

Rounding the album off on a positive note is ‘Walk You To Heaven’. Shades of Carly Simon on this one.

Beth Nielsen Chapman is one of those artists who never fail to deliver musically and lyrically. One of the year’s musical highlights and an album that will age well over time too. ****

Album review: REVIVAL BLACK – Under The Light

REVIVAL BLACK - Under The Sky

TMR Records [Release date 26.08.22]

Like Mason Hill and Hollowstar (amongst others),  Revival Black occupy that space called “the new wave of classic rock”.  Their debut came out in 2019 and ‘Under The Light’ is set to consolidate their position.

The trick with a heavy rock album is “keep it lean, keep it mean”.  With tracks clocking in at single length there is no chance of any unnecessary padding or filler.  And talking of which, any track on this album could be a “single”.

Opener ‘Believe’ demonstrates the band’s modus operandi with the twin guitar onslaught of Alan Rimmer and Adam Kerbache and wide vocal range of the impressive Dan Byrne.  And the anthemic choruses, sure to be crowd pleasers, are never very far away.

Amongst the standouts here are ‘Broken Home’ and ‘Hurricane’, the latter with a definite Alter Bridge vibe.  Fans of that band, and indeed Slash’s recent solo albums, should investigate ‘Under The Light’.

Melodic Rock Editor Andy Nathan has reviewed their gigs with Scarlet Rebels and Vega and more recently at the Firestorm festival (August 2022) when he wrote “…to my ears lacks a bit of variety and memorable hooks”.

There’s certainly very little light and shade (apart from ‘Hemispheres’), just piledriving riff-driven heavy rock.  Maybe greater sublety will come with album no.3 but for now – in a crowded marketplace – these Liverpool lads are real contenders.  ****

Album review: SENDELICA – One Man’s Man…

SENDELICA - One Man's Man...

Fruits de Mer Records [Release date 28.11.22] www.fruitsdemerrecords.com

For several years now Keith Jones from Fruits de Mer Records has kindly supplied us with samplers, singles and albums from his eclectic and enterprising label.  Keith seeks out obscure bands from around the world and promotes others more directly.  The emphasis is on psychedelia and prog.  Every year a festival in West Wales celebrates the label and its artists.

Welsh band Sendelica have been a fixture on the label for a decade or more and specialise in jammed instrumental prog/psych workouts.  On the latest album, four long pieces demonstrate the band’s prowess.  It’s a concept too, exploring when exactly Man became Man following 2021′s ‘And Man Created God’ which explored the relationship between Man and Religion.

Of course as this is an instrumental album any lofty concepts are hardly intrusive.  At times, with a mix of fuzzed guitar (Pete Bingham) and rampant saxophone (Lee Relfe), the band  recall Van Der Graaf Generator and Hawkwind.

And elsewhere the usual suspects early Pink Floyd and the hypnotic rhythms of Kraut-rockers Can come to mind.  On the opening track ‘The Dawn Of Man’ even classic Steppenwolf is referenced.

‘Neanderthal and Homo Sapien’ looks to more recent grooves such as The Orb and Ozric Tentacles, propelled by Colin Consterdine’s keys and Glenda Pescado’s bass (a strong feature throughout).   On the final track ‘Future Man – Homo Superior’ the insistent and atmospheric repeat motif  is set against a sci-fi/Tangerine Dream backbeat.

Throughout, riffs are stated, repeated, and extemporised.  Like the label itself, the album is both infectious and idiosyncratic.  Probably best enjoyed with a massive bong.  And I mean that in the nicest way possible to ensure total immersion.  ****

Review by David Randall

Footnote: Regular customers of Fruits de Mer Records (or “club members”) are treated to free samplers when purchasing commercial releases.  The latest of these – ‘The Sign Of The Crab’ – reflects the label aim of introducing new music not necessarily on the FdM label. It is available in November.

Album review : PETE WAY – Solo Albums 2000 – 2004 (3 CDs)

Cherry Red [Release date: 30.09.22]

In 2019, the late great Pete Way and his band played an unannounced gig in my home town, a few miles from Glasgow, just before the pandemic hit and less than a year before his death.

It was a small venue, not what he was used to, but the band’s Aberdeen gig had been cancelled and this was a hastily arranged stopgap.

No prima donna antics, the band played like they were auditioning for a gig at Hampden, quickly winning over the small crowd with their enthusiastic delivery, and their tight, eminently roadworthy set list.

The source material came primarily from Way’s first solo album, Amphetamine (2000), with a few UFO biggies thrown in.

Fast growing reissues label, Cherry Red has now re-released all three of the ex UFO, ex Waysted bass guitarist/vocalist’s solo albums.

The aforementioned Amphetamine, plus 2002′s Alive In Cleveland (hello!), and Acoustic Animal (2004).

Together, they represent as rounded a picture of Way’s musical talent and determination to find his own groove as you’re likely to find.

Amphetamine shines a very personal light on the darkside of his addictions, the needle and the damage done… not a square inch of Way’s soul goes unbared. ‘Fooled Again’, ‘American Kid’ and ‘Crazy’ are the album’s best Garage Rock shots.

Those three plus ‘You And Me’, ‘Need Her Bad’ and ‘Born Again’ from The Plot album (Way’s recording with Michael Schenker) deservedly elbowed their way into the live setlist, forming the backbone of Alive In Cleveland, a raw, ragged edged slab of punk, rock and blues for the masses. The sound quality is better than expected.

Way is joined by guitarist Michael Christian for the Acoustic Animal album. It is what is says, 10 acoustic numbers. There are a few of the usual suspects in the tracklist, but Way also pays his respects to a couple of the rock’n'roll greats with covers of John Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ and ‘Fats Domino’s ‘If You Need Me’.

As you might expect, the pared down approach leads to much more of a laid back feel. What Way describes as a “raw, honest simplicity”.
No better way to bow out.  ****

This boxset of 7×7” Jellyfish singles is truly a step back in time to when vinyl was king. An A side and a B side. On the A side was the song the label wanted radio to play. The B side was often the one the fans fell in love with (in the safety of their own homes, of course).

Founded by Andy Sturmer and Roger Manning, this was a band with a story, one that’s been well documented online. These singles were the backbone of the band’s two albums, Bellybutton, 1990 and Spilt Milk, three years later.

Like the great bands they emulate – most obviously Queen and the Beatles, less obviously The Turtles, The Association, The Beach Boys, The 5th Dimension – Jellyfish had an expert way with a harmony.

The title of the first single, ‘The King Is Half Undressed’ – a lavish, eminently melodic, mini pop symphony – now seems like a banner headline. Even music fans who’ve only ever had minimal contact with Powerpop in the nineties will know the song. The vocals – the soloing and harmonising – come in rich layers of sound that sometimes seem to float past, and at other times dig in deep, staking out their own sizeable chunk of sensory overload.

It’s bright and it’s brash. The voices and the theatrical guitar bass and drum orchestration play to the past without sounding cliched or derivative. Just listen to The 5th Dimension’s ‘Paper Cup’. You can see where the inspiration comes from.

For a moment or two it drifts off into the sighing harmonies and twinkling guitars of Brian Wilson land, then reluctantly, it comes back.

There’s always more than meets the eye. It’s a genuine joy going back and finding something new each time.

The B side, or what cool people referred to as the “flipside”, ‘Calling Sarah’ has a little bit Brit in its DNA – in the guitars, in the Squeeze like vocal phrasing. A little bit of soul too… and a little bit of drama.

These two songs form the first single in the set.

There’s little to choose between the other 6 singles.

‘Baby’s Coming Back’ was subsequently covered by McFly in the UK and became a number one hit. It is a bright and breezy snapshot of Jellyfish’s slightly more streamlined sound, clearly plugged into the history of the genre, with a calliope thrown in for fun.

The softly swaying ‘Bedspring Kiss’ is framed in the kind of lush pop pallete that we would expect from a solo McCartney, and ‘I Wanna Stay Home’ reaches for the personal, with a haunting, yearning vocal leaning into a ticking clock and distant trumpet echoes.

‘The Ghost At Number One’ and ‘New Mistake’ were the singles released from the band’s second (and last) album, ‘Spilt Milk’. Each deploy memorable melodies and complex, cascading arrangements with absolute precision. Alby Galuten and Jack Joseph Puig had produced Bellybutton. Manning and Sturmer co-produced on Spilt Milk, utilising what they’d learned from the debut experience.

And . . . there’s a cover of Wings’ ‘Jet’ and Badfinger’s ‘No Matter What’, just in case we haven’t been getting the message.

After ‘Spilt Milk’, the band splintered into many parts. With various members forming Imperial Drag and The Grays, writing music for Disney, writing music for Japanese Anime, and latterly, the Lickerish Quartet (Roger Manning, Eric Dover and Tim Smith). All have their roots in Jellyfish. Quite a legacy. *****

Album review: THE DEAD DAISIES – Radiance

THE DEAD DAISIES - Radiance

www.thedeaddaisies.com [Release date 30.09.22]

The Dead Daisies seem to have found their saviour in Glenn Hughes.  Several solid if unspectacular albums (including live and covers releases) were fronted by different vocalists and now – with Hughes joining for 2021′s ‘Holy Ground’ – the line-up seems more settled (with Brian Tichy back on drums) and the band have been touring in Europe and North America over the summer.  A UK tour is lined up for December.

It’s always easy to be suspicious about a “supergroup” configuration.  They come and they go, few seem to hang around.  Hughes most recent hard rock band (notwithstanding the lack-lustre California Breed) was Black Country Communion which was stymied in particular by Joe Bonamassa’s solo commitments.

‘Radiance’ is very much a vehicle for Hughes’ robust musicianship and the heavy rock vibe a natural successor of his brief liaison with Tony Iommi on that mighty, if overlooked, album ‘Fused’.  The title track in particular but also ‘Cascade’.

If you are looking for a large amount of heavy riffage, this is the place. Opener ‘Face Your Fear’ actually recalls the punchline riff of  ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’ but demonstrates everything that’s good about this album.  Soulful, distinctive vocals and muscular, melodic guitar from Doug Aldrich.

The strength of this album has been revealed by the trickle of “singles” since early summer – following the digital ‘Live From Daisyland’ EP to keep things bubbling – including ‘Hypnotize Yourself’ with its bluesy overtones reminding of latter-day Bad Company.

‘Radiance’ the album references several decades of heavy rock and serves it up in a dramatic, contemporary fashion and always with Hughes’ midas touch.  ‘Radiance’ is quite simply heavy rock heaven and certainly one of the best in class this year.

So, for example, ‘Born To Fly’ recalls a little of ‘Run To You’, whilst ‘Kiss The Sun’ is thematically connected  to The Beatles and ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’.  ‘Not Human’ recalls Audioslave via early millennium Europe and so on.

Whilst the album is riff-heavy throughout, it concludes with the wonderful mid-tempo ‘Roll On’ which at just on three minutes finishes far too soon but at least complements the single-length nature of tracks on the album as a whole.  Perhaps these tunes will be extended when played live?

A band re-energised and re-purposed.   Let’s hope rock’s great journeyman (and great voice) hangs around for the next one.  *****

Album review: IMPELLITTERI – Wake The Beast (3 CD anthology)

Global Rock Records [Release date: 30.09.22]

New kids on the block, Global Rock Records have recently licensed Impellitteri’s total back catalogue. That is quite a coup for a non-major label.

This 3 CD anthology, Wake The Beast, curated by Chris Impellitteri himself, is the first manifestation of the deal.

The logistics: 32 tracks selected from 10 albums and 2 Eps, plus a compilation track, spread over 3 CDs. Never more than 5 tracks from any one album, and usually only 3 or 4.

The need for speed has never been more apparent than in the finger blurring, neoclassical ‘Secret Lover’, taken from the band’s first studio album, 1988′s Stand In Line.

Impellitteri wields his guitar like an UZI, spitting out a blur of notes that leave no one untouched. Surprisingly for one who is inclined to suffocate the vocals with fast fingers, Impellitteri leaves room on the outstanding title track for Graham Bonnet to show just why he succeeded with Rainbow and Schenker.

Victim Of The System EP went down well with a growing fanbase. Original vocalist Rob Rock was back, helping the band create a perfect mix of interpretive finesse and speed. ‘The Young And the Ruthless’, wrapped in a glorious rush of amplitude and complexity, is perhaps the album standout, and appears here.

And although the full length follow up, Answer To The Master seemed to be treading water (yet still delivering the superb ‘Hungry Days’ and ‘Fly Away’) it also brought with it some controversy over its reputedly “vivid Christian themes”, but that’s another story.

By 1996, the band was attracting premier league producers. Michael (Accept/ Dokken/ Skid Row) Wagener manned the mixing desk for Screaming Symphony. This album is a blast from start to finish, and contains two of the band’s live set list favourites: ’17th Century Chicken’ and ‘Rat Race’, plus the immense ‘Father Forgive Them’.

Eye Of The Hurricane … that centre point at which the maelstrom is still … is an apt title for this 1997 album. The recording takes a moment to illustrate the length and breadth of the band’s rock and metal range, yet only features the title track. Surprising.

Crunch, the album, came in 2000, on the cusp of a major change in just how rock music should sound, and so, drop tunings became part of the band’s musical arrangements. ‘Spanish Fire’ and ‘Texas Nuclear’ successfully claimed the middle ground… a skilful transition from past to present.

A lot can change in 2 years. On 2002′s System X, Bonnet was back, and along with Impellitteri they twin up axe and voice, pushing the needle of the band’s stylistic compass back into the red. Fans loved it, especially ‘Falling In Love’ and ‘Rock’n'Roll Heroes’.

Pedal to The Metal (2005) was an outstanding critical success. It resonates with the sheer joy of running the heavy metal gauntlet, taking the punches, fighting back, weighing up the past and pushing on through the present. The contemporary metal ‘Propaganda Mind’ is the pick, we would guess for very personal reasons.

Apart from melted frets and skyscraping vocals, you can always rely on Impellitteri to serve up a slice or two of social commentary. 2009′s Wicked Maiden doesn’t disappoint. Rob Rock’s sharp, observational lyrics take no prisoners as they condemn mankinds’ propensity for violence. The title track and album standout, ‘Garden Of Eden’, carry the message.

Three CDs of Impellitteri is not easy to get your arms around. Worth it though. ****

Gig review: RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

For most of the first half of the 2010’s, Reckless Love were regular fixtures in the UK with their colourful and fun pastiche of the eighties heyday of glam and cock rock. However after a poor fourth album in ‘Invader’ they withdrew for a while to regroup, and in the meantime the pandemic intervened, so this twice postponed show ended being their first London show in six and a half years.

It was also the first opportunity to see them since a shift in musical style to encompass synthwave (by the way one of those terms such as hair metal that was never used when the music itself was popular in the 1980s).

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

Collateral are another band for whom the pandemic was untimely as their debut full-length album had not long been released and the Kent rockers have had to build up momentum again. They opened up a three band bill to an intro tape of Bon Jovi, which was ironic as in a short set the more melodic and BJ-ish side of their repertoire was set aside in favour of their heavier numbers ‘Mr Big Shot’, ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Broken Promiseland’, prominently  featuring  Todd Winger’s shredding.

The keyboard player they drafted in last year had been ditched but second guitarist Louis Malagodi retained and indeed he even shared some of the solos as they debuted two new songs, and ‘No Place for Love’, in particular, and ‘Sin in the City’ were very impressive on first listening.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

Larger than life singer Angelo Tristan, who seemed to have toned down his act a little, only donned his acoustic the once and then the sound failed him so he went without on another raunchy set closer in ‘Merry Go Round’. My only gripe was that a 30 minute slot at the ridiculously early 715pm start when many are still funnelling in may not be the best showcase for their talent, and after similar slots with HEAT and Skid Row next month, they really need to be doing headline shows.

There had been a change to the tour just a few weeks before when original co-headliners Dan Reed Network pulled out on health grounds and The Treatment were called in at short notice. As a result, at the start they didn’t have too many of their own fans but, having seen some very impressive festival performances over the last 12 months, it came as no surprise to me that they grabbed the audience by the throat. From the sample size of friends I spoke to, they won many new fans including ones that had seen earlier versions of their chequered line ups and been freshly impressed.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

Tom Rampton has an excellent voice and his mane of fair hair is not the only comparison with a young Robert Plant while brothers Tagore and Tao Grey reel off one riff after another as they pull some classic theatrical poses at the front of the stage, and although the material is hardly original the band are impressively tight.

The likes of openers ‘Lets Get Dirty’ and ‘Let it Begin’ and the slower, menacing beat of ‘Eyes on You’ have AC/DC as a primary influence, but as the set wore on there were just enough variations to keep things interesting. Both ‘Devil in the Detail’ and  ‘Wrong Way’ had a more melodic sensibility and  ‘On the Money’ with a ZZ Top like intro, boasted some very effective soloing from Tagore in a  slower, bluesier style.  ‘Rat Race’, particularly in its pre-chorus bridge, called to mind the glory of Def Leppard before they became too slick.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

‘Get the Party On’, featuring some rare harmony lead guitar also got the crowd involved including the increasingly common trick, getting everyone to crouch down and rise up. ‘Shake the Mountain’-  the one survivor from their earliest days along with ‘The Doctor’ – ended an impressive set in typical fist punching fashion and confirmed they have developed into one of the best live bands out there. In truth, despite DRN’s undoubted quality the Treatment were presentationally and musically probably a better fit on the bill in hindsight.

By the time Reckless Love came on there was a healthy crowd of all ages, which was especially encouraging to see as I think the Electric Ballroom is the biggest London venue they have headlined.  The shift in musical style was not the only change as the Finns came on looking very dapper in matching cream suits and in the case of bassist Jalle Verne, accessorised with a hat which made him look like a young Roger Glover. Gradually layers were shed  until singer Oli Herman went bare chested far later into the set than of old, to the belated relief of his many female admirers.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

In contrast to the majority present, I was not familiar with the new material from ‘Turborider’ and was not prepared for the title track to open the set in a fast and furious manner that actually reminded me more of Judas Priest in their cheesier eighties phase, although ‘Outrun’ was more familiar synthpop territory with prominent taped keyboards and other sounds.

The first of the older songs in ‘Monster’ was lightweight but with a ridiculously catchy chorus hook in the best Reckless Love style and debut album favourite ‘Back to Paradise’ had people jumping. Guitarist Pepe has always been the more metallic element in the band and this was confirmed as he shredded Jake E Lee style on a surprisingly good cover of ‘Bark at the Moon’.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

A substantial chunk of new songs included ‘Eyes of a Maniac’ and my favourite ‘Kids of the Arcade’, which both had a classic early eighties pop rock feel, and ‘Loaded’ was just as enjoyable.

Oli is also an endearing frontman and in near perfect if accented English, mixed humour and stream of consciousness honesty. In particular he addressed what I had long thought was the elephant in their room, by admitting they used backing tapes as they had no keyboard player and could hardly play synthwave songs without additional assistance. However for ‘Badass’ all the embellishments were turned off and the sound was all the better for it.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

‘Edge of Our Dreams’ was particularly warmly received and Oli spoke the truth when describing their relationship with the UK as being like prodigal sons, introducing the new song of the same name.

The latter part of the set revisited those insanely catchy songs that made their reputation, starting with ‘On the Radio’ then moving into the encores in ‘Animal Attraction’ and ‘Night on Fire’, before the biggest hook of them all in the glam goes to Ibiza anthem ‘Hot’ which had most people jumping in the air, your correspondent included. The only disappointment was that the night was not topped off with ‘Beautiful Bomb’.

RECKLESS LOVE- Electric Ballroom, London, 6 September 2022

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but even though not totally sold on the new musical direction there was enough of the core Reckless Love spirit to remind me what we had been missing for so many  years. Their approach and indeed the whole evening could be summed up in the simplest of words- fun.

Singles: JMS, NICKELBACK, STRYPER, JESUS JONES

JMS Randy Savage YouTube

JMS is back with another new song which is named after American wrestler Randy Savage. It is another gentle pop tune looking backwards (loving the namechecks to Cagney & Lacey and the A Team!) and forwards in a person’s life. With the Lightning Seeds back in action JMS provide a perfect complement. Pop perfection kids.

NICKELBACK San Quentin BMG

Never quite sure why Nickelback are loathed by many rock fans as they are one of the few rock acts, outside of the bands from before the early 90s, that can sell out the stadiums and still produce decent music. ‘San Quentin’ is the first offering from their new album ‘Keep Rollin’ which is due on November 18. Certainly a heavy beast of a tune and bodes well for the upcoming album. Put aside any preconceptions and enjoy a decent, modern rock song.

STRYPER Transgressor Frontiers

Third single lifted of the band’s forthcoming ‘The Final Battle’ album (out on October 21), they have achieved what vocalist Michael Sweet stated, a 100MPH rocker. Quite possibly the most metal the band have ever been and Michael Sweet still hits those high notes with ease.

Like Nickelback, Stryper are a proper Marmite band being too Christian in their lyrics for some metal fans and too heavy for the secular music market. Sad really as good music is exactly that regardless of label and Stryper have that in spades.

JESUS JONES Wired and Windburned

JESUS JONES Wired and Windburned Demon Music Group

Not strictly a new song, as it is part of a 15CD box set entitled ‘Some of the Answers’ from Demon Music Group. The aforementioned box set not only includes the band’s six studio albums but also over 150 demos, rarities and unreleased tracks. Jesus Jones may not be your usual GRTR! fare but they have their own unique sound and this song goes big on the guitar riffs, although the drums seem to be courtesy of Bontempi…

HAMISH HAWK Think Of Us Kissing

HAMISH HAWK Think Of Us Kissing

First single from Hamish Hawk’s second album ‘Angel Numbers’ due on February 3. Written about the pitfalls of the music industry and the fact Hamish Hawk is not what you’d call mainstream, he has produced another infectious tune coupled with his talent for lyrics that resonate with the listener. A pleasing taster from what will surely be an early musical treat in 2023.

Album review: STATUS QUO – Quo’ing In, The Best Of The Noughties (2CDs/3CDs)

earMusic [Release date 16.09.22]

Quo’ing In… is a compilation album from one of rock’n'roll’s great survivors, Status Quo. It looks back on the band’s recordings released since the year 2000, embellishing the material selected with up to date studio rerecordings, and sharp remixes.

10 of the band’s 33 albums were released in the last 22 years, a pace unequalled by any of their contemporaries. That the music always sounds fresh is testament to the band’s durability, and in no small way due to the shuffling in and out of band members, sometimes made through choice, sometimes forced on the band by tragic circumstances.

The package comes in several versions . . . Digital, 2 CD and 3CD .

In the 3 CD version, the third CD is crammed full of live tracks from the band’s celebrated gig at the world famous Westonbirt Arboretum in 2010, including ‘The Wanderer’, ‘Rain’ and ‘Roll Over Lay Down’, all clearly going down a storm with the crowd.

The 18 track CD1, The Noughties Hits, presents cutting edge remixes of live favourites, ‘Backbone’ and ‘Liberty Lane’, plus an “Out Out Quoin” version of ‘Cut Me Some Slack’ and a 2010 recording of ‘In The Army Now’.

CD2, Quoin’ Rarities, is another VFM, 18 track affair. Biggies, ‘Paper Plane’, ‘Rockin All Over The World’ and big fan favourite, ‘Caroline’, are all presented in the sonic finery of  2022 studio versions.

In its own way, this compilation documents the second half of Quo’s life in rock, creating a high def picture of a band always tuned to the wavelength of their core fan base. An enduring outfit who managed to overcome significant obstacles and still come out on top.

As ever present founder, Francis Rossi says: “What Status Quo achieved during this 20 year period – in the face of challenges that none of us could have predicted – is surely worth celebrating”. Amen to that.  ****

Album review: TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN – Shake The Roots

TYLER BRYANT & THE SHAKEDOWN - Shake The Roots

Rattle Snake Records [Release date 09.09.22]

Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown have been around since 2008 releasing this, their fifth studio album, and also the first on the band’s own newly founded label. Joining Tyler Bryant are drummer Caleb Crosby, bassist Ryan Fitzgerald and guitarist Graham Whitford (son of Aerosmith’s Brad).

The album marks a change in sound for the band as they go down a straight ahead blues rock route for the most part, as opposed to their previous hard rocking offerings. As Tyler explains, “The whole concept of this record was to get back to our roots as a band and as individual musicians. We each got into music to have fun writing, recording and performing.”

‘Bare Bones’ starts the album as it means to go on featuring plenty of guitar, sparse rhythm and a tune that you’re singing along to even on the first listen. ‘Ain’t None Water Downed’ keeps that bluesy feel going with a great line, ‘I like my loving like a bar room fight’. One to play loud on the stereo.

‘Ghostrider’ reverts back to Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown’s harder rocking past. The guitar solo is heavier than a elephant’s backside with a bass that would shake a building. One of the (many) album highlights. ‘Off The Rails’ is similar in pace and heaviness. Another tasty hard rocking tune on a album that doesn’t have any weak songs.

On ‘Tennessee’ they pay homage to their hometown and remind us they do rock n roll there, not just country.

‘Roots’ goes down a treat with its southern rock feel – not disimilar to Robert Jon & the Wreck. ‘Hard Learned’ shows the mellower side being a plaintive song featuring Tyler’s soothing vocal and an acoustic guitar.

Foot stompin’, blues rockin’ tunes – just the way we like ‘em!  ****

Album review: JESSICA LYNN – Lone Rider

JESSICA LYNN - Lone Rider

Website [Release date 09.09.22]

Finally Jessica Lynn gets to release her much anticipated debut album. As Jessica says – “Lone Rider is the accumulation of two years of hard work.  After losing a 100-city, 15-country world tour over the past few years, repeatedly — due to pandemic restrictions, creating this record was the biggest passion project I’ve ever taken on.

A collection of stories of my life…this record speaks volumes about me as a person through the lens of country, rock, blues, soul, and pop.  I have been waiting a long time to share it and am so excited that this day is finally here!”

Despite the recent touring setbacks Jessica Lynn has managed to share a stage with the likes of Richard Marx, Keith Urban and Loretta Lynn. Her band is a family affair with her dad on bass, mum on backing vocals and husband on lead guitar. Musically the album is top notch with a special mention to the pedal steel playing of Bob Riedel. His playing gives a classic country flavour to songs like the title track and ‘Better Than That’.

We’ve had a few songs released prior to this album including ‘Better Than That’, a perfect example of a country pop crossover song and hit. Easy on the ears with an impressive vocal and production.

‘Run To’ has also been around prior to this album’s release and still has that ‘wow’ factor after repeated plays. The stripped down version of this song is worth tracking down on your preffered streaming service too. Another ‘wow’ moment is the duet ‘You Wouldn’t Know’, a perfectly paced and delivered heartfelt song.

Jessica Lynn shows her southern rock side on ‘Love Me That Way’, complete with a tasty guitar solo and bar room style piano. ‘Worth It’ with its layered backing vocals and catchy chorus make it another crossover hit in waiting.

A finer collection of modern country pop and rock tunes you’ll be hard pressed to beat this year. Let’s hope Jessica Lynn finally gets to tour the UK next year. ****

Album review: MARILLION – Holidays In Eden (Deluxe Edition)

MARILLION - Holidays In Eden (Deluxe Edition)

Parlophone Records [Release date 16.09.22]

For 30 years I have banged on about ‘Holidays In Eden’ being one of Marillion’s finest albums, sometimes overlooked even by the faithful who thought it was a bit too commercial.  Even the band (guitarist Steve Rothery in particular) thought this might be the case also.

It was the second album with Steve Hogarth on vocals.  In 1991 he was still finding his feet although the previous outing ‘Season’s End’ had been well received.  Marillion were torn between forging a new path with their new frontman and record label pressures for more hit singles.

In some ways ‘Holidays In Eden’ marks a transition to the more bombastic and sometimes introspective prog that they were to develop subsequently.  It came as no surprise that after their following album ‘Brave’ – a concept piece of some depth but lacking the short and sweet single – they were dropped by EMI.

This was a blessing rather than a curse and opened up the way for their crowd-funding approach later in the decade, freed of record company shackles and financial expectation.  The fans went with them.

MARILLION - Holidays In Eden (Deluxe Edition)

The latest and last but one in a series of definitive album reissues, this new package is a sumptuous refurbishing of that 1991 album.  With a new (2022) remix and, on the Bluray, a high definition 48bit/24kHz and 5.1 mix.  All sounds sumptuous as you would expect but nothing can really detract from or enhance such great songwriting and original production (by Chris Neil).  The new mixing does give even greater definition to Hogarth’s quite superb vocals, reveals more of Kelly’s keys, and toughens up the sound overall.

The writing of the album may have been tortuous but – even with essentially a pop producer on board – the band unleashed the powerful opener ‘Splintering Heart’, the rocky ‘This Town’, whilst ‘Dry Land’ (reprised from Hogarth’s previous band How We Live) is an utterly superb paean to unrequited love.

I can understand that because of events surrounding the album’s gestation – disagreements within  the band about work methods, direction of travel and production and not least the pressure from EMI – they may be a little ambivalent now about ‘Holidays’.  But sometimes out of adversity comes greatness (‘Pain And Heaven’?).  In short, ‘Holidays In Eden’ is one of Marillion’s most accessible albums and, yes, I still think it one of their best.

Lyrically, the album also holds together because in the main it’s all about relationships: either infidelity (‘Holidays In Eden’, ’100 Nights’), break-ups (‘Splintering Heart’), a newly born (‘No One Can’) or finding a soulmate (‘Waiting To Happen’).  It really does contrast with the likes of F.E.A.R. and even An Hour Before It’s Dark.

This limited edition includes a handsome book with lyrics and liner note,  two discs recorded at Hammersmith Odeon on the promotional tour in September 1991 whilst the Bluray also includes the B-sides and demos from this period and an 85 minute “making of” video documentary.  Promo videos and a German TV concert complete the definitive package.  *****
