Album review: RESTLESS SPIRITS – Second To None

Frontiers [Release date: 12.08.22]

Restless Spirits’ guitarist Tony (Lords Of Black) Hernando’s melodic rock project gains some momentum here, with 4 outstanding singers. 3 of them, Chez Kane, Kent Hilli and Renan Zonta are on the verge of wider recognition. The fourth, Johnny Gioeli, is already well known for fronting Neal (Journey) Schon’s Hardline and Axel Rudi Pell’s band. All 4 contribute 2 or 3 songs each.

Second To None is the ensemble’s second album. Emphatically, it shows the writer’s grasp of melody, his sense of time and place, and his ability to craft a song around it.

Kent Hilli again proves to be something of a find. Having displayed real style and vocal panache on recent solo and Giant albums, he stretches his nearly-as-soulful-as Lou Gramm vocals almost to breaking point on the powerful opener, ‘Need A Li’l White Lie’.

It’s confirmation, if any were needed, that the heart of Hernando’s music on STN takes its beat from the eighties.

The artist with her finger truly on that pulse here is Chez Kane.

‘Hey You’ is the first track to raise its head above the parapet. Kane sings her heart out on this feisty little chunk of poprock, reflecting a range of vocal influences, from the throaty hysterics of Fiona and Vixen, to the controlled power of Ann Wilson.

‘Until The End Of Time’ ups the stakes. If a song is a slice of emotion expressed with words and a good tune, then this song pushes that notion to the limit, echoing the bloodrush of intensity that inhabited so much pop/ rock/ metal in the eighties. In other hands you would conclude it’s way beyond its sell by date, yet a commanding performance from Kane turns it into a triumph of passion over pastiche.

In complete contrast, Zonta’s material goes for an update, trading OTT intensity for a faster, sturdier, more contemporary melodic rock sound, with occasional jazzy undercurrents, embracing just enough aural hooks to capture the past in the present.

You could say that too of the Gioeli material, though his tendency to over emote squeezes the life out of much of his material. Only ‘Too Many’s neat upward gearshift into a tough, swaggering chorus gets us there.

Hernando’s highly polished production moves the music along with an athletes speed and grace, and the finishing line comes all too soon. ****

Singles review: EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER – Singles (12 x 7″ singles box set)

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER - Singles (12 x 7" singles box set)

BMG [Release date 26.08.22]

It may be hard to believe that Emerson, Lake & Palmer, progressive rock titans, actually produced singles and -  moreover – some became hits.

This splendid box set includes a dozen of them from around the world including such territories as Angola and Portugal.

There are a couple of singles from Japan including ‘Fanfare For The Common Man/Brain Salad Surgery’ and several from Germany.

EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER - Singles (12 x 7" singles box set)

The band never consciously wrote for a single and what emerged was at the behest of their record label who were obviously happy to salvage three minutes with an eye on the charts.

‘Fanfare’ achieved their greatest single success, reaching No.2 in the UK, but their most successful single in terms of various countries was 1970′s ‘Lucky Man’.  Three years later ‘Jerusalem’ (here the Portuguese and U.S. release) was banned by the BBC scuppering useful airplay.  They considered it irreverent.

It was only in later life that the band went a bit AOR/commercial: the album ‘Love Beach’ (1978) is represented by the German single ”Canario/All I Want Is You’ whilst 1992′s ‘Black Moon’ yields two singles including ‘Affairs Of The Heart/Better Days’.

This box set will appeal to ELP die-hards and collectors who like a “nice item” to put on the shelf perhaps never to be played.  There is little duplication in the tracks and it does emphasise that the band were not all about pomp and prog excess.  It does stress however that arguably the band’s best work was done before 1973.

Housed in their original picture sleeves and on coloured vinyl, with art cards, liner note booklet, and foreword by Carl Palmer, it makes for an attractive collectors’ package.  *****

Album review: NORDIC UNION – Animalistic

Frontiers [Release date 12.08.22]

Nordic Union, as every melodic rock fan will know, is a musical marriage of two talented people. Songwriter, producer and guitarist, Erik (Eclipse, WET) Martensson, and vocalist, Ronnie (Pretty Maids) Atkins.

Atkins’ advanced form of lung cancer, diagnosed only 3 years ago, has clearly pushed him into creating some of his best work. His tremulous vocals are particularly striking on opener, ‘On This Day I Fight’, a rock’n'roll hymn to commitment and artistic durability that sets up the lyrical theme of the album.

That’s not to ignore Martenssen’s significant contribution in writing most of the material as well as producing, arranging and playing guitar here. The album’s tightly structured songs are primarily a product of his fertile musical mind, frequently crossing that invisible line between melodic hard rock and symphonic rock.

‘In Every Waking Hour’ and ‘If I Could Fly’ catch the mood, with both artists striking a sense of urgency, musically, vocally and lyrically, creating a psychological depth not usually heard in “popular” music.

And they know their audience.

The album is sprinkled with celtic flavoured guitar intros, mixed with densely textured choral contributions, adding depth to the material. Both those openers, plus other standouts, like ‘Wildfire’, ‘Last Man Alive’ and the title track, ‘Animalistic’, are melodic rock standard bearers. All of them carry a freshly unfurled flag of pulse quickening tunes and anthemic choruses, reminding us just where these two outstanding musicians came from.

And as you would expect, there’s a strong dramatic thread running through the album. ‘This Means War’ is a thick cut slice of metalised anti-war sentiments; ‘Scream’ roots for the underdog and the downtrodden, and ‘Riot’ aims to get all that mental turmoil out there before the shadows fall.

Martensson’s music understands and helps convey these sentiments, running side by side with Atkins’ vocal delivery, both adding to each song’s sense of defiance.
Melodic Rock with a message. ****

DARE- Road to Eden

DARE Road To Eden (Legend Records)

Though it would be unreasonable to expect a full return to their original style, this nice blend of classic and newer Dare is a perfect representation of where they are in 2022, setting them up nicely for the extensive autumn tour which will hopefully bring their profile back up to where it should be.  **** 1/4

JOE SATRIANI - The Elephants Of Mars

JOE SATRIANI The Elephants Of Mars (earMUSIC)

Satriani once again manages to sustain a wholly instrumental album with few curveballs (the burst of funfair in ‘Dance Of The Spores’ being the one exception) and forever pushing the envelope.  *****

MATT PEARCE & THE MUTINY The Soul Food Store (Mutinear Records)

TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT - Day By Day

TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT Day By Day (indie)

Like his long term band, most of these songs would have fitted into a 1970s FM radio schedule, immediately evoking the laid back sun, style and nostalgia of the West Coast.  ****1/2

Album review: FRACTAL SEXTET

FRACTAL SEXTET

Alchemy Records [Release date 16.09.22]

It would be easy to dismiss Fractal Sextet as a muso-based-up-their-own-backside combo.  In fact the press release might have you believe that.  But no. Muso – yes – but damned accessible with it.

The whole album is totally compulsive and is essentially progressive jazz fusion.  The modus operandus is great groove with repeated motifs, requisite amount of urgency, and fine musicianship.

Swiss mainman Stephan Thelen has collaborated with the likes of Kronos Quartet but together with his sparring partner Jon Durant he has melded a work of great infectiousness.  Colin Edwin (sometime bassist with Porcupine Tree) injects the wonderfully fluid rhythm with drummer Yogev Gabay and percussionist Andi Pupato.

‘Fractal 5.7′ is a great taster, a hypnotic groove with Fabio Anile’s lovely keyboard textures dancing around Durant’s guitar.  At times soundling like Marillion at their instrumental  best.  At other times even Mike Oldfield gets a look-in and ‘Planet Nine’ recalls a rather harder version of the John Williams fronted Sky.  Remember them?

On ‘Mise En Abyme’ there is a showcase for Thielen’s delayed guitar (inspiring the band’s name) which is like David Gilmour on steroids.

The pieces here have been developed from previous offerings including ‘Crossings’ (2021) which featured Thelen and Durant and demonstrate that it is possible to have an organic feel from disparate file sharing in socially challenged times.

Truly great stuff. *****

Album review: AMY GODDARD – Rise

Bandcamp [Release date 22.07.22]

Amy Goddard is a British contemporary folk singer/songwriter with both Celtic and American influences. She is also an artist and luthier (which I had to look up and they are a maker of string instruments). With guest musicians including three-time nominated BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Musician of the Year Ross Ainslie and Hannah Fisher.

It is a moving and thought provoking listen as the opening song ‘Make Your Mark’ demonstrates, concerning prisoners of conscience. The electric guitar of Jon Lewis adds further clout to the song. ‘Cornish Mist’ and ‘This Old House’ are the real album stand outs, as both give ample room in the mix for Amy Goddard’s soothing and emotional vocals.

Those who enjoy a traditional piece of folklore ‘The Beast of the Cut’ will more than satisfy, whilst her up-tempo version of John Stewart’s ‘Odin’ continues the mythical theme. The other John Stewart penned song on here, ‘Hunters of the Sun’, has a nifty rock n roll sound to it. The guitar on this one tips a hat to Richard Thompson’s style of playing.

‘Rise Anew’ is Amy’s take on lockdown, which although it seemed to go on forever at the time now seems like a long time ago. Sees the album out on a positive note.

2022 has seen a fine number of singer songwriter releases in the folk arena with Amy Goddard’s ‘Rise’ up there as one of the best so far. ****

Album review: PALACE- One 4 The Road

 PALACE- One 4 The Road

Frontiers Records (Release date 15.07.22)

Swedish man of many talents Michael Palace is back with his latest recreation of vintage AOR. Like its predecessor ‘Rock and Roll Radio’ 18 months ago he sings and plays all instruments himself, writes and produces everything and his reach even extends to the cover art.

It’s the music that matters though, and on opener ’Fifteen Minutes’ his more than respectable  vocals remind me, especially on the verses,  of Rick Springfield Michael Morales and Stage Dolls. The chorus is superb while the guitar solo shows a neat change of tempo.

‘Westbound’ is even better, its chorus ‘heading westbound, sunshine all year round’ (hey, a Scandinavian can only dream!) conjuring up images of blazing down the open highway with the top rolled down.  Its also very guitar-driven, from the opening melody lines  guitar to the Neal Schon-like soloing over the choruses in the closing stage.

Repeat listening brings a recurring comparison- to Night Ranger in their most commercial mid-eighties ‘7 Wishes’ period. particularly on ‘Too Old for This’, ‘Time Crisis’ and ‘World Gone Mad’, the latter showing off his love of guitar arpeggios. On ‘Money Can Kill’ the slashing guitar chords accentuate the impact of the chorus, somewhat similar to Airrace’s ‘Didnt Wanna Lose Ya’ while ‘The  Driver’ drops the pace somewhat.

My favourite tracks include  ‘Facing the Music’ with a classic keyboard intro and gritty Jamison- esque vocal delivery straight out of the Jim Peterik/Survivor playbook, which he successfully mined jointly with Kent Hilli on the latter’s solo album last year; and ‘Live the Life’ with its Springfield-esque staccato intro and vocals that remind me of The Outfield and Harem Scarem, especially the way they become bigger on the chorus.

What’s not to like? Well the instruments inevitably feel somewhat processed, while a little more variety would not have gone amiss. There’s also a slight dip in quality with the last two songs: ‘Cancel the Flight’, a touch muddled both in arrangement and lyrics though rescued by another excellent guitar solo, and ‘Loneliest Night’, which dips its toe in more contemporary pop arrangements.

After some shifts in style – melodic hard rock on the ‘Master of the Universe’ debut and flirting with a dance-oriented sound on its follow up ‘Binary Music’, Michael Palace seems to have settled on his forte- classic, sun kissed up tempo eighties AOR. It may be a pastiche but the delivery is executed with love and skill and will delight those of us who cut our teeth on that style of music. ****

EP review: HILLBILLY VEGAS – Greetings From Hillbilly Vegas

Greetings From Hillbilly Vegas

Conquest Records [Release date 17.06.22]

Hillbilly Vegas have been around since 2011 making quite a name for themselves in their native USA and now look set to repeat that success in the UK & Europe. They already have UK dates lined-up in November, with European dates and festival appearances planned for next year. Until then they are using this EP to introduce themselves.

Hillbilly Vegas are Steve Harris (Lead Vocals & Guitar), Stacy Thornburg (Guitar), Jason Meredith (Guitar), Marty Lynch (Bass), Troy Hollinger (Drums) and Andy Wise (Backing Vocals).

The EP features two songs from their forthcoming album, plus three tried and tested live favourites. Both ‘High Time For A Good Time’ and ‘Field Full Of Hillbillies’ (the lyrics on this one are superbly tongue in cheek) are fine examples of southern rock. Think the Black Crowes crossed with Lynyrd Skynyrd and add a distinct Stones vibe on the backing vocals.

‘Mason Jars and Moonlight’ features plenty of tasty guitar solos, with a Molly Hatchett feel overall. ‘Hell To Pay’ is a kick out the jams hard rocker. A song that will sound good live I am sure.

‘Losin’ To Win’ is a well-crafted ballad, made that extra bit special by the vocal performance of Steve Harris. The organ backing on here adds greatly to the song’s overall feel and sound, as indeed does the organ/keyboard fills throughout the course of the EP.

Robert Jon & the Wreck, Blackberry Smoke and now Hillbilly Vegas, all proving southern rock is alive and well. A band to add to your ‘to see live’ list and in the meantime crank up this fine five song treat. ****

Book review: DECADES – ROXY MUSIC IN THE 1970’s by Dave Thompson

DECADES – ROXY MUSIC IN THE 1970’s by Dave Thompson

SonicBond Publishing [Publication date 10.06.22]

As the book’s title suggests it covers Roxy Music’s career between 1972 and their first break-up in 1976, along with their 1979 reunion. Unlike other titles in this series the author Dave Thompson focuses more on the band’s history and various solo projects, rather than the author’s opinion on each song and it is all the better for it.

Thompson is an accomplished author with over 150 books to his name and his love and knowledge of the band, along with the solo work of Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay shines through clearly in his prose.

The addition of the tour dates from the time shows how Roxy Music grew in fame from 1972, as focussing on my hometown in Stoke thy started off at the George Hotel, then onto the more sizeable Victoria Hall and finally Trentham Gardens (which hosted many a big act in the 1970s), all in the space of a couple of years.

There are a myriad of releases that featured Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera covered in the book, along with Bryan Ferry’s solo albums which were mainly cover versions given the Ferry treatment and often backed by much of Roxy Music.

If, like me, you only really know the Roxy Music for their hits like ‘Virginia Plain’, ‘Love Is The Dru’g et al, this book is a fascinating insight and worthy of a place of on your bookshelf.  ****

Single reviews: JMS, COYOTE CREED, HOUSE OF LORDS, PHIL THORNALLEY

JMS  (the name coming from the initials used on a highscore table in an arcade) is an Oxford musician with a penchant for pinball. He is also the frontman of quirky pop rockers Alphabet Backwards.

‘Election Day’ is a record about trust. On this occasion trust in one’s own body and mind and living each day with epilepsy and never knowing if and when “that feeling” may appear.

With an addictive electronic beat, keys and strummed guitar JMS has a winner on his hands. For a bedroom musician JMS comes up with an expansive sound, reminiscent of Swim Deep and the Lightning Seeds. Top draw music and even better news is that another single is due in August.

Coyote Creed are another artist looking to release a single a month, kicking off with ‘Don’t Ya Know’. Coyote Creed consist of Dave McCalden on lead guitar and vocals, Jack Thomas on lead & rhythm guitar, Kieran Groves on bass and Andy Harding on drums. Nice bit of 70’s flavoured laid back country rock with a hint of Santana. One to keep an eye and ear on for sure.

House Of Lords have been one of the more prolific of the 80’s melodic hard rock bands and they are gearing up for album number thirteen, ‘Saints and Sinners’, due in September.

Now the big change for this album is the addition of keyboards wizard Mark Mangold (Touch, American Tears, Drive She Said, Michael Bolton), who brings back the band’s pomp sound of their classic 80s albums. The chorus doesn’t quite seem to grab the listener, however, it is a great song and bodes well for the new album.

Like me you may not have heard of Phil Thornalley but he has an impressive musical CV that includes working with the likes of Bryan Adams, The Cure, Psychedelic Furs, XTC, Duran Duran and Paul McCartney. His latest album ‘Now That I Have Your Attention’ is out on September 2 and prior to that we have the lead track ‘Fast Car’.

Phil Thornalley openly admits he was after a Jeff Lynne and ELO sound which he certainly achieves on this fine song. The strings, grandiose piano and backing harmonies all recall the glorious sounds of ELO. More please!

Lotusbliss are an indie-rock outfit from Canterbury featuring three brothers Josh, Seth and Adam. Their third EP ‘An Aching Sea’ is due on September 2. They have only been around since 2020, yet listening to ‘Nightbliss’, the chosen lead song, they sound as they have been creating catchy indie pop rock for years. Looking forward to hearing what their new EP offers.

Jupiter's Beard - Sunrise

Jupiter’s Beard are a three piece indie rock band that hail from Stoke-on-Trent. They have been building a bit of impetus with gigs in the Potteries, north west and beyond. Their new summery single ‘Sunrise’ could just be their breakthrough song, with a big brassy beat and instant chrous, Jupiter’s Beard are the best band you have yet to hear – yet! Does what a good single should and have the listener humming it after just one play.

That busy man from Didcot, Tom Webber, fresh from his recent appearances at the likes of the WOMAD, Truck and Cornbury festivals, has a new song ‘No Me No You’ out. Quite a change sound wise as it features a full rhythm section, twangy guitar and Beatles like backing vocals. Up there with ‘Martha’ as one of his best and most catchy tunes to date. I’ve said it before but this lad has that certain magical something that with the right breaks could see him become a big name.

Chez Kane releases her second album ‘Powerzone’ in October and before that has released ‘I Just Want You’. Working again in partnership with Crazy Lixx’s Danny Rexon, this one sounds like prime time 80s Heart, right down to the mid-song guitar solo. Yes it has all been done before but Chez Kane has a powerful voice and her second album should be one of the autumn’s melodic rock treats.

Album review: DEF LEPPARD – Adrenalize (vinyl reissue)

Universal [Release date 05.08.22]

Def Leppard are Britain’s most successful rock bands, whose records adorn many a collection (and radio playlist too). 1987’s Hysteria, with hits like Poor Some Sugar On Me, was such a success it’s album everyone either owns or knows.

Adrenalize was the band’s fifth album, originally released in March 1992, recorded as a four piece, following the death of guitarist and founder member Steve Clark.

After two albums in the early 80s, that were sometimes associated with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (a term the band dislike, they were always far too polished, melodic and verging on commercial).

Their third album, 1983’s Pyromania, was a worldwide breakthrough (it went diamond in the US, with sales of 10 million), during whose recording guitarist Pete Willis was replaced by Phil Collen. Rock Of Ages and Photograph were hit singles that remain popular today. A 4 year delay (largely due to drummer Rick Allen losing an arm) before Hysteria, and that then brings us to Adrenalize.

Def Leppard weren’t exactly the quickest in the studio, and trying to follow the success of Hysteria would always be difficult. The process was also slowed by guitarist Steve Clark’s alcohol dependency, who spent several sessions in rehab. Sadly, shortly after being given an ultimatum by the band, he died of respiratory failure after mixing alcohol and prescription drugs.

By then preparation for the recording of Adrenalize had started, and the riff-meister Clark had demoed many of the tracks with the band before he died, receiving writing credits on six songs.

Back in 1992, CD was the format de jour, and the original vinyl release is relatively hard to find. With the LP having a solid feel, and photos and credits on the inner sleeve, the album looks and feels good.

Needle on the groove and first up is the hit single ‘Let’s Get Rocked’. With long-time producer Robert Mutt Lange busy working with Bryan Adams, the band co-produced the album with Mike Shipley. What’s immediately obviously from this catchy and radio friendly track is that the band have kept much of the feel alive from Hysteria. A decent riff, overlayed vocals and guitar. The sound is solid, a hint of warmth,

A jangly guitar intro before the band come in with a solid riff, ‘Heaven Is’ follows the band’s formula well.

While the band knew how to rock, up to a point, there was a distinct move in a hard pop direction from Hysteria (in places as much as Hysteria was from Pyromania), so while the band were never short of a catchy and solid song, there’s no question on that, but there’s very little new ground trod here.

A little less slick and cohesive is ‘White Lightning’, which otherwise is probably the album’s highlight. Running at 7 minutes, it’s a little chunkier and dedicated to the memory of Steve Clark.

Much like Hysteria, it’s not album you can really pull tracks out from (despite the number of singles released from the album), but there’s a feel that runs across the album, making it a very enjoyable listen beginning to end.

Whatever your views on the progression from the previous album, it’s still a very very good album that the record buying public loved at the time. This reissue feels and sounds quality too. ****

Album review: MONTROSE – I Got The Fire (6 CD Boxset)

Cherry Red/HNE Recordings [Release date: 29.07.22]

If you’re looking for comprehensive CD coverage of Montrose’s journey through the seventies, look no further. That might sound like a PR man’s tagline, but it’s reflective of reality.

This boxset consists of:
CD1: Montrose (1973)
CD2: Demos plus first Live Radio Session, Record Plant (1973)
CD3: Paper Money (1974)
CD4: Second Live Radio Session, Record Plant (1974)
CD5: Warners Bros Presents Montrose (1975)
CD6: Jump On It (1976)

Ronnie Montrose, session musician turned bandleader, had very astutely recruited relatively unknown vocalist, Sammy Hagar, for the band’s debut. Denny Carmassi and Bill Church, later to join Heart and Hagar’s own band respectively, rounded out the line up.

In the UK, hard rock was being knocked into shape by bands like Free, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Ronnie Montrose had clearly been listening. The debut, characterised by the proto metal heavy rock of ‘Bad Motor Scooter’ (written by Hagar) and ‘Space Station No.5′ sold solidly through its release year.
Slickly edited versions of these two tracks are included as bonus material.

It’s become the norm now for HNE / Cherry Red reissues to display high quality sound. The remastering goes some way to separating Montrose’s monster guitar shapes from Hagar’s lean and confident vocalising. The whole album sounds like it’s been adrenalised.

The second disc, Demos 1973, opens with half a dozen demos from the debut. All of which except for ‘Shoot Us Down’ made it onto the finished album.

Their first radio session at the Record Plant – 11 tracks in all, make up the rest of this disc. It’s as you would expect. Talented, motivated musicians, all together in one room, blasting out great rock songs.

Paper Money went off (tangentially at times) from the debut’s straight ahead hard and heavy rock. This was Ronnie Montrose bravely attempting to expand the band’s musical palette. Arguably, the two tracks from the debut aside, ‘Connection’ is Hagar’s finest hour. More slick edits add 4 bonus tracks.

We’re back for another Live Radio Session in the Record Plant for CD4. This is a focused, truncated set, hitting the high spots – ‘Bad Motor Scooter’, ‘I Got The Fire’, ‘Rock Candy’, ‘Space Station No.5′ plus 4 more well chosen songs – leaving us wanting more.

By the time the third album, Warner Bros Presents, came around, Hagar was gone. Montrose covers band singer, Bob James, got the gig.

Alan (The Animals) Price’s ‘O Lucky Man’ and Eddie Cochran’s ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ seemed bizarre cover choices. Ronnie Montrose was also producing now and he made the decisions.

The anti-drugs song ‘Black Train’ had been tracked by Montrose since playing back up on the original Kendall Kardt version in 1971. It seemed another bizarre choice.

Yet, it is the band’s second best selling album.

It seems most unfortunate that 1975′s Jump On It was the last with that line up.

Bob James and Montrose were clearly creating rock’n'roll chemistry together, and Dan Hartman’s funkily commercial ‘What Are You Waiting For’ and the melancholy ‘Rich Man’ were inspired third party songwriting choices.

Once again a clutch of mono and stereo edits are added as bonus tracks.

By the end of the following year Bob James had departed, and Montrose disbanded soon after. ***

Album review: WAYSTED : Heroes Die Young – Waysted Volume 2 (5 CD boxset)

Cherry Red/HNE [Release date 29.07.22]

Waysted reformed early in the new millenium, just to prove that the world hadn’t ended.

This 5 CD boxset chronicles the band’s releases from when they kick started their career in 2000, to the date it ended, in 2007.

It’s a vastly entertaining journey:

CD1: Wilderness Of Mirrors, 2000
CD2: Back From The Dead, 2004
CD3: Boot From The Dead, 2005
CD4: Live From The Barfly, Glasgow, 2005
CD5: The Harsh Reality, 2007

They relaunched with Wilderness of Mirrors, an album of demos, used as the basis for the band’s full scale 1985 tilt at the US album charts, Save Your Prayers.

‘Walls Fall Down’, ‘Black’n'Blue’ and ‘Singing To The Night’ are 22 carat gems, direct, uncompromising and filled with soaring hooks. With Danny (Tyketto) Vaughn on vocals, even in rough edged demo form, they buoy up Wilderness… just as they did the finished album.

Back From The Dead was the the first “new” album of the “new” era. This is what GRTR said at the time: “Opener ‘The Alternativa’ starts slowly but the pace builds to some real classic rock. ‘Dreams’ and ‘Must B More 2 It Than This’ both feature some catchy riffs and tunes. The whole thing just gets you nodding and foot stomping.

With Fin Muir on board, this is Pete Way’s band back at its best. In fact it’s better than the 80s Waysted stuff. You could argue the band truly are Back From The Dead.”

You’ll have guessed that Boot From The Dead bears more than a passing resemblance.
This was the band/the label looking to maintain momentum. Back From The Dead had made a few waves.

It has six tracks, including some energetic, good quality live versions of ‘Vices’ material plus covers of UFO’s ‘The Wild, The Willing And The Innocent’, and ‘No Place To Run’, both used as bonus tracks on the Japanese release of Back From….

Organised Chaos Live was recorded at Glasgow’s (much missed) Barfly venue in Clyde Street.

The band’s unpolished production lets the raw, unadulterated hard rock do the talking, showcasing the band at their fiercest and most undiluted (guitarist Chris George was back, and it shows). It’s a perfect-picks set list, rescuing six explosive songs from the band’s first two albums, most especially ‘Love Loaded’, ‘Hang Em High’ and ‘Toy With The Passion’, all of which deserve repeated listening, then adding a sprinkling from later releases.

With the exception of closer, ‘Can’t Feel The Pain’, the tracks on the periphery of The Harsh Reality don’t quite seem to step up. But the rolling thundercloud of purposeful hard rock at the album’s core is all consuming.

Standouts, ‘Long Time Dead’, ‘Out Of Control’ and ‘It Wasn’t Me’ are full of driving, elemental music, folding a swathe of blues influences into the band’s own classic rock forms and structures, often electrifying, frequently just exciting.

It was quite a way to go out. Fin puts it best: “this album has been the most pleasing, refreshing and creative piece of work we have ever done…”.
Say no more. ****

Album review: OUSEY MANN – Is Anybody Listening

OUSEY MANN- S/t

Escape Music (Release date 24.06.22)

Both Chris Ousey and Steve Mann have  been on the UK rock scene as long as I can remember –the former singing with Virginia Wolf, Heartland and Snakecharmer among others, the latter the loyal sideman on 2nd guitar and keyboards for Michael Schenker and the Sweet as well as a core member of Lionheart.

However it was only lockdown that saw Escape Music bring the two together to make an album, though they have rejected a snappy band name –  Lionheartland perhaps?  The line up is completed by another seasoned figure in drummer Clive Edwards and Steve’s own wife Angela on bass.

‘The Flag’ kicks the album off with a big pompous intro and big vocals with Chris Ousey’s trademark vocals  supported by a wall of backing vocals, Praying Mantis/Lionheart style. It takes a little getting used to as the arrangements have a lot going on, but  ‘So it Begins’ is more direct with a big hook while  Steve Mann’s guitar solos on both this and ‘Brave New World’ are almost Schenker-esque in their melodic dexterity.

However singing in a distinctly heavier style than he is used to, the strain shows at times on Chris’ voice which can be a little thin and at times fitting uneasily with this old school traditional hard rock approach. However he has no such trouble on ‘I’ll Tell You When to Stop’ – despite an intro reminiscent of MSG’s ‘Cry For The Nations’, it has a totally different feel, with a spacious, funky and almost poppy groove brought to an unexpected and brilliant ending.

At an hour in length and with 13 songs, there are a few fillers for me – ‘Broken’, ‘Cruising At Altitude’ and ‘Before You Leap’ are not bad, just unexciting . But midway through the album come two of my favourite songs of the year to date – ‘Built For The Fight’ has an epic pomp metal feel and the slower verses this time show off Chris’ voice at its best.

The semi ballad ‘The Fall’ also has a different sound to much of the album but is superb, with a wonderful chorus and Steve’s solos exhibiting taste and control. The title track takes a different approach again, a slow loping blues like MSG’s ‘Rock You To The Ground’ (sorry that comparison again).

‘I Know Who I Am With You’ and ‘No Second Chances’  both have a classic Rainbow or Purple feel, notably the former which boasts some Jon Lord-esque organ and again both are brilliantly tied to a conclusion. Album closer  ‘Number One’ is a straight ahead rocker with Steve letting rip on guitar.

A health warning is in order that this is emphatically not an AOR album despite Chris Ousey’s past. However, with a few pleasant variations on a theme, it is a refreshing trip back to a style of classic melodic heavy rock all too rare these days. Recommended for those who pine for the glory days of Rainbow, UFO and MSG.   ****

Album review: SILENT RUNNING – Follow The Light

Door Records [Release date: 22.07.22]

Northern Ireland’s Silent Running convincingly transitioned from Punk to Hard Rock in the eighties, and enjoyed moderate success, scoring support tours with Simple Minds, Talk Talk and Robert Palmer.

Albums on EMI and Atlantic Records followed, only for the band to demobilize shortly after.

Back together, they’ve just celebrated their 40th anniversary by releasing first album in 30 years, Follow The Light. Still no sign of Huey, Dewey and Louie though.

No question, it’s a largely unadorned, but expertly assembled Melodic Hard Rock album, generally propelled by a precision machined rhythm section and amped up guitars.

Peter Gamble’s battle hardened vocals express simple but powerful emotions on the album’s opening tracks. Song with titles that leave little to our imagination, like ‘Live Right Now’, ‘Darkest Hour’, ‘Beyond Your Wildest Dreams’ all have a ring of authenticity and a conviction that speaks from experience.

The power of unashamed sentiment within lyrics that are ambitious only in expressing those sentiments run through ‘Lost Boy’, ‘Golden Days’ and the title track, ‘Follow The Light’. After the vim and vigour of the openers, the restraint on these tracks is well judged. Gamble’s achingly passionate vocals give form to a few inspired looks at life… in all its relentless grind, and occasional glorious promise.

It’s not often you can say that a rock album has heart and soul. This one does. ***1/2

Album review: PHIL VINCENT – No Respect

PHIL VINCENT – No Respect

Bandcamp [Release date 22.07.22]

As he aptly describes himself on his Bandcamp page, “Phil Vincent is truly a one man band. His proficiency with multiple instruments makes it possible for him to write, arrange, perform, produce and mix all of his own music.”

He truly is a force of musical nature juggling bands like D’Ercole and Legion, along with his regular solo releases, of which ‘No Respect’ is the latest. He is joined by drummer Max Piccolo and long-time musical companion Vince O’Regan on lead guitars.

‘Nobody Cares’ is what we have come to expect from Phil Vincent, namely hard hitting melodic hard rock. However, second song ‘War Arrow’ sees him go full on metal, from the searing guitar solo through to the frantic drumming of Max Piccolo. Very tasty indeed!

‘Anywhere At All’ has enough cowbell to satisfy even BOC’s Eric Bloom, as the song is a proper toe tapping melodic rocker. ‘Road To Nowhere’ and ‘When Will It End?’ bring the tempo down, with ‘Road To Nowhere’ a keys drenched melodic rock delight. The backing vocals and harmonies on this song are top draw too.

Phil Vincent, despite his prolific musical output, doesn’t do bad albums and this is amongst his best. Crank it up, set up your air guitar and enjoy! ****

Album review: LESSMANN VOSS – Rock Is Our Religion

Atomic Fire Records [Release date: 22.07.22]

This Lessmann Voss, Rock Is Our Religion album would be easy to write off because it seems so out of time.

Bonfire’s Claus Lessmann and Mad Max’s Michael Voss are clearly not keen to wear the musical garb of leathery road warriors any longer. RIOR is mostly an album of laid back, best-before-1989 melodic Rock.

In fact most of the songs sound like they’ve been beamed down from some extra terrestrial FM Radio station, orbiting the planet, stuck in the eighties.

There’s a whiff of heartwarming nostalgia to them all, while at the same time there’s a freshness here that animates the music.

There’s no doubt that the passage of time has done nothing to diminish the duo’s ability to write and produce great melodic rock songs. ‘Smoke Without Fire’ is a peach, ‘Fight For Our Love’ has a gloriously hard edged pop flavour. Voss’s finely tuned production gives both a burnished veneer of sophistication that underlines the music’s authentic feel.

‘Medicine Man’, ‘Sister Golden Hair’ and ‘Runaway Days’ are built around an immediately engaging batch of melodies, each burning slowly but brightly, making some astute lyrical observations en route, including a reluctant acceptance by both artists that they are getting older and greyer now, as the years speed by.

Even though it treads that familiar ground of love found and love lost, ‘Take My Heart And Run’ is a genuine highlight. A bittersweet love song that quietly unfolds like a summery melodic rock flag.

In a similar vein, ‘Slow Dance’, an old fashioned, late nite ballad, doesn’t quite hit the mark, but it makes the effort worth lingering over.

Rock Is Our Religion, the album, is never going to shake the world, (though it tries toward the end with ‘Stay’ and ‘What Feels Right’) but above all it’s written and performed by two distinguished musicians who know what works, and what doesn’t, and it’s all the former here. ***1/2

Album review: UFO – High Stakes And Dangerous Men / Lights Out In Tokyo (2 CD set)

Cherry Red [Release date 22/07/22]

UFO’s Lights Out (1977) had been a huge album for the band in Japan. So when they toured the High Stakes And Dangerous Men album there in 1992, they would include a Lights Out set. Thus this pairing of studio and live.

The High Stakes… studio album was the one and only UFO album to feature guitarist Lawrence (Grand Slam/WildHorses) Archer and drummer Clive (Uli Jon Roth/Bernie Marsden) Edwards, and it’s a beautiful thing. An in form Phil Mogg and the return of influential wildman bassist, Pete Way completed the line up. No lab could have cooked up this chemistry. They are clearly so in tune with each other that we cannot avoid being in tune with the music ourselves.

The songs, as usual, are something of a force of nature, bruising encounters with life, full of sharp metaphors and guilty parties.

From ‘Ain’t Life Sweet’s visceral riff and back-to-front catharsis to ‘Bordeline’s propulsive rhythms and hard won promises, the album’s tough as teak hard rock treats love and relationships like contraband, to be smuggled past the powers that be.

Mogg’s voice has a worn down edge that suggests he’s circled the block many times and danced with the devil more than once. It has that strident authority that carries songs like ‘Primed For Time’ and ‘Running Up The Highway’ which, in other hands would have come across cliched and hopelessly dated.

High points of the Lights Out Live In Tokyo disc are unquestionably the closing handful of classic tracks. Few bands can equal the rapidfire ‘Doctor Doctor’ and the sheer raw urgency of ‘Rock Bottom’. Both tracks propel the band full tilt into ‘Shoot Shoot’ and a blazing cover of Eddie Cochran’s ‘C’Mon Everybody’.
As the cliché goes, the audience went wild.

The remarkable quality of the remastered sound is worth mentioning here. Thirty year old recordings shouldn’t sound this good, but they do. ****

Book Review: DECADES – Free and Bad Company in the 1970s by John Van der Kiste

Sonicbond Publishing (Publication Date 29.04.22)

The latest in the Decades series, that delves in detail into the most productive phase of a band’s career, is one with a difference.  It spans the activity of two separate bands,  Free and Bad Company, albeit with a 50% overlap of membership in peerless singer Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke.

In fact a further liberty is taken with the literal brief as Free’s whole career from their formation in 1968 is dealt with in the same detail. Veteran author John Van de Kiste- whose account of Free’s labelmates Mott the Hoople  in this series only appeared earlier this year – charts their musical evolution on each album, with their blues roots largely left behind after their first album as they pursued a broader palette of sounds.

The criticism, which may be with the format of these books as much as the writer, is they are long on chronological descriptions but short on analysis. As well as an occasionally clunky writing style, he fails to really draw out why it was that the differing personalities of the band members proved destructive, or why a band that seemed to have it all before them- the  now overplayed ‘All Right Now’ seeing them briefly dubbed as successors to the Stones- fell apart so quickly not once but twice in their short life.

The tragic figure in the saga is Paul Kossoff, so talented yet plainly unable to function with his addictions, and the author does make the interesting point that rehabilitation was in its infancy in those days and he was dusted down and put on the road with no concern for his welfare.

Though doomed efforts to keep him in the spotlight such as Backstreet Crawler are covered in full, the second half of the book moves onto Bad Company. Both the characters involved and the musical approach tell a more straightforward story and the author seems more comfortable with his musical descriptions. It is also a happier tale as, under the wing of Peter Grant and Swan Song, they enjoyed the business backing to propel them to sustained success before staleness and changing musical tastes resulted in their popularity starting to drop off by the end of the decade.

As with other books in the Decades series there is a postscript summarising the intervening 40 plus years in less detail. This is where I started to notice some annoying factual errors creeping in – Boz Burrell had left Bad Company’s original mid eighties reformation long before 1993, while Mick Ralphs’ career-ending stroke came shortly after Bad Company’s UK tour and not the Mott the Hoople tour of some years earlier. Their commercial revival under Brian Howe, at least in America, is also inaccurately dismissed.

There is a wealth of information contained within its slim covers but it will not go down as one of the best written in the series. Though as an excuse to dig out Free’s seminal material and Bad Company’s instant blues rock classics and listen to Paul Rodgers’ wonderful vocal delivery again,  it comes highly recommended.  ***

Album review: SUPERSONIC BLUES MACHINE – Voodoo Nation

Supersonic Blues Machine

Provogue [Release date 24.06.22]

‘Voodoo Nation’ is Supersonic Blues Machine’s 3rd album and it works hard to make the same impact as its 2 predecessors. It’s a rock solid album with plenty of bluster, but relies heavily on formulaic choruses with overpowering vocal blocks and dropped in harp wails.

The album features an array of guests who bring welcome light and shade, but don’t always sound an integral part of the album as was the case on the band’s debut album ‘West of Flushing, South of Frisco’.

Judged by any other standards this is a fine album, but given the band’s past it’s a restatement of their crossover style to be found on ‘Miracle Man’ (the opening track on ‘West Flushing’), rather than a step forward.

Bass playing band leader and producer Fabrizio Grossi has effectively built his own musical community from the beginning, incorporating guests who buy into his rock, blues, soul, funk, Americana and reggae melange.

The band’s core trio of Grossi (vocal and bass), Kris Barras (vocals and guitar) and Kenny Aronoff (drums) power their way through a dozen tracks with a mix of well crafted grooves and plenty of intensity.

The expansive arrangements leave plenty of room for strong bv’s wailing harp and handclaps. These salient elements all make telling appearances here.

For example, ‘Coming Thru’ could have edited the track at the 3.40 or even 4 minute mark, as a change of tempo means the song limps to the finish line.

The trio are arguably at their best on the single ‘Too Late’, which uses the familiar: “fine line between love and hate” theme, on a buzz saw, riff-led stomp with handclaps.

A warmer guitar break at 2.06 minute mark, injects fresh energy into an over-produced track that cries out for the kind of space and clarity to be found on the funky King Solomon Hicks track ‘You &And Me’.

Joss Smith is also a good example of less if more approach on the muscular B3 laden groove ‘Get It Done’ complete with a punchy hook, a catchy ‘oooh’ refrain and a brief, but soaring slide.

‘Voodoo Nation’s sonic overload sometimes borders on the claustrophobic, as a busy production shoehorns in 8 guests while trying to keeping a coherent identity.

It just about succeeds, via a succession of punchy choruses swamped by choral style vocals that start off as bv’s and then frequently take on a dominant role.

The opening track ‘Money’ is an example of this, as a  piercing buzz saw guitar tone and dry drum sound quickly give way to a significant chanted vocal hook.

Kris Barras opts for a piercing solo, before a sharp contrast between his doctored vocal and some soulful bv’s which are brought to the front of the mix.

It’s a prominent role they occupy on much of the album, such that by the time of dreamy electric piano arpeggio and subsequent tough riff-led rocking of the title track, it’s only a few seconds in before an initial vocal chant.

Happily the song builds a percolating groove topped by a spine tingling female vocal wail that leads us back into the hook. Barras impressively matches this with his own lung bursting range over a thundering finish.

Each guest brings something new to the album, with Sonny Landreth, Joe Louis Walker and Kirk Fletcher arguably being the best fits.

Landreth’s rich slide tone excels on a luscious intro  to ‘8 Ball Lucy’ with a reggae undertow, on a song with an impressive hook, layered keys and a spacey outro.

Joe Louis Walker’s soulful falsetto is the perfect foil for the husky Barras on the percussive sounding ‘Is It All’.  The bv’s enjoy their finest moment too, as they support the song rather than dominate it.  Better still, Kris’s closing fuzz tinged solo evokes Ernie Isley.

By contrast, Kirk Fletcher’s clear tone weaves in and out of a cool soulful blues ballad ‘I Will Let Go’ with a strong choral hook.

This track works so well because it leaves enough space to breath, the opposite of the busy ‘Do It Again’, on which Ana Popovic muscular, big toned solo fills the track with gusto, but adds little to the song.

Eric Gales brings an exotic tone to bear on the 8 minute ‘Devil At The Doorstep’ on which Barras sings the portentous line “Lock up the door, and turn off the light ‘cos nobody’s coming home tonight.”

The backing harmonies and a brief guitar line helps build up the tension, as he adds an exclamatory: “I need to know that he’s gone”, to usher in Eastern sounding tones.

It could arguably have been snipped at the 5.30 minute mark, but that would rob us of a taut guitar line leading into a Floydian sweep, anchored by Grossi subtle bass and topped by Gales intricate playing, before a repeated vocal block and spacey outro.

It’s a song that builds up the tension and draws us in, but doesn’t quite justify its extended playing time.

Charlie Starr’s acoustic train-time beat of ‘All Our Love’ is a welcome stripped down finish – all pristine phrasing, restrained bv’s and handclaps – to book-end a busy album that might require repeat plays to fully reveal itself.

Happily this track provides a perfect reason for doing so.****

Album review: BUSH GOTHIC – Beyond the Pale

BUSH GOTHIC – Beyond the Pale

Website [Release date 29.07.22]

Beyond The Pale is the third album from Bush Gothic, an Australian folk three piece consisting of Jenny M Thomas (vocals, fiddle), Chris Lewis (drums) and Dan Witton (double bass & vocals). Bush Gothic are a band on a mission as they aim to revive and revitalise traditional Australian folk music, which to be fair this reviewer hasn’t heard much of in the many years I have been listening to folk music.

Opening the album is the tale of Jim Jones, a convict who dreamt of revenge and joining the bushrangers to wreak havoc upon the British government who had incarcerated him. The Lonely String Quartet further enhance the song’s sound.

‘Pub With No Beer’ is adapted from the poem by Dan Sheahan who went to a hotel in north Queensland in 1943 only to find the US serviceman had drank all of the beer. One a band like Bellowhead would have great fun adapting.

Jenny Thomas’s vocals are a key part and attraction of Bush Gothic, particularly on the quieter moments such as ‘The London Convict Maid’ and her singing on ‘Road To Gundagai’ (named as one of the top 30 Australian songs of all time by the Australian Performing Rights Association) is sublime.

Stick with the album as it has plenty to offer just not always on the first couple of listens. Easy to see why they are so well regarded in their homeland and they are set to make inroads into the wider folk scene with this album. ***1/2

Album review: TAZ TAYLOR BAND – Nocturnal

Global Rock [Release date 15.07.22]

Taz Taylor’s classic hard rock never stands still – it’s always in motion, on the move, heading somewhere. Maybe that’s a holdover from his time driving 18 wheelers across the USA for a living, before he got his first break in the music business.

The numbers first… Sixteen years later he’s on his seventh album. Five vocalists across Nocturnal’s twelve tracks. This in itself doesn’t always lead to great rock’n'roll listening, especially when the album is sprinkled with instrumentals, but you certainly feel like you get you money’s worth.

The most interesting of the the instrumentals is probably the softly emotional ‘George’s Song’, a tune nicely pitched in that emotional space between ‘Cavatina’s guitar acoustics and Slash’s anticipatory intro to G’N'R’s ‘Anastasia’.

David Reece and Mark Boals are matched with two of the set’s oustanding songs. ‘Ready Or Not’ and ‘Be Mine’ have a dark, derivative Britrock swagger, grounded in solid, bass heavy rhythms. Both spin on Taylor’s razorwire guitar figures, underpinning a couple of seriously sinuous melodies and high calibre vocal contributions.

That said, by throttling back on the voice projection, Doogie White’s mannered honesty on the stripped down ‘Raw Nerve’ is a winning touch. It gives the song a whiff of dark theatrics – edgy pop rather than rock – with echoes of the Beatles’ White Album running through its grooves.

Graham Bonnet and Chandler Mogul, both of whom have solid recording pasts with Taylor, aren’t too far behind with the entertaining ‘Accidental Tourist’ and ‘Blue’.

But to be perfectly honest, all of the tracks here suggest the album was recorded on a taut, high pressure schedule, making the whole experience streamlined, economical and friction free. A bit like piloting eighteen wheelers across the USA. ***1/2

Album review: COMPASS – Theory Of Tides

COMPASS – Theory Of Tides

Escape Music [Release date 22.07.22]

Second album from Compass, the band formed by Steve Newman, who is more known for his melodic rock efforts in Newman, He is joined by vocalist Ben Green, Newman bassist David Bartlett and drummer Toni Lakush. Good to see all four involved again after Compass’s highly recommended 2020 debut.

Compass have gone even more prog on this album as ‘Theory Of Tides’ is a concept album. The album is based on the life, works, and inner turmoil of the famous astronomer and scientist Galileo Galilei.

The ten minute epic ‘Mountains on the Moon’ sets the tone for the whole album, featuring plenty of keys, precise guitar riffs, a strong driving rhythm and the melodic tones of Ben Green. It is good that Steve Newman has managed to keep some of the Newman sound as it makes this album more appealing to melodic rock fans who maybe a tad hesitant giving prog rock a go.

Lovely bit of guitar riffs and keys interplay on ‘The Assayer’, the nearest to a single on the album. Oh, and a nifty little bass solo to listen out for too. ‘Once In A Lifetime’ provides a ballad, reminiscent of 80’s Rush.

The album’s centre piece is the three part ‘Laws Of Nature’ which is where the Dream Theater comparisons come in, as it tells a story through not only the music, but also through the music’s ebbs and flows. It is a classic headphones listen with the album’s finest guitar solo on ‘Laws Of Nature Dialogue I – Fly To The Sun’, with the keyboards solo not far behind!

Compass have done it again, keeping all the musical treats we enjoyed on their debut and adding even more magic & sparkle. Unlike some prog which can, let’s be honest, unravel in a mess of overlong ‘look at me’ soloing, Compass keep an eye and ear on melody at all times. ****

Album review: SNOWY WHITE – Driving On The 44

Pete Feenstra chatted to Snowy White in July 2022 for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 10 July 2022.

Snowy White - Driving On The 44

Soulfood [Release date 11.07.22]

Snowy White has always been a one guitar blues man. The fact his Les Paul Goldtop have graced some of the biggest band over the last 4 decades – Peter Green, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy and Roger Waters – has often obscured the fact he’s essentially a fine blues player with a rich tone and emotive phrasing

Looking back at his career you imagine he learnt his craft early on with Peter Green, because all these years later he still sounds like a cross between his old mentor and Carlos Santana.

That said, Snowy has also had his own instantly recognisable sound, while his spoken word vocal style became the litmus paper for an array of sumptuous guitar tones.

In that respect, nothing much has changed on ‘Driving On The 44’ his first album for 2 years. The cinematic title could almost be a metaphor for his songs which are all blues based, but as on the shuffle tinged ‘Ain’t No Secret Thing’ offers clever word plays: “I could never make it out why I couldn’t make it in, but maybe I can make it right, brush away those sins.”

He often cast himself in the role as a story telling narrator, who leaves plenty of room for intricate interplay with pianist Max Middleton. Being a covid era recording the extraneous solos were probably dropped in, but it never detracts from an album full of restraint and subtle dynamics.

There’s a lovely lightness of touch on ‘Fresh Water’, an extended opener with a piano-led fusion feel, on which Snowy’s gentle notes hover over a beautiful arrangement helmed by his own bass playing  and punctuated by his son Thomas’s exaggerated cymbal crashes.

It’s the perfect groove to lever us into an album full of subtle rock, blues, funk, and fleeting jazzy and Latino influences. There’s a sudden synth wash at 2.06 which feels as if the band are checking out their options, before Snowy adds a Spaghetti western tremolo sound over Latino percussion.

Much like the album as a whole, ‘Fresh Water’ takes its time to build steadily and resolutely as the solos always serve the song.

Middleton’s piano conjures up images of waves on a far off distant shore, while White adds a plaintive solo on a perfect opening track.

The whispered  vocal and gentle instrumentation of ‘Longtime Blues’ gives it a reflective feel, while the funky ‘Way Down In The Dark’, adds an organ and up-in-the-mix bass, as if to help underpin some heartfelt, but acerbic lyrics.

The title track benefits from a double guitar harmony opening and a pulsating groove, over which Snowy half speaks his colourful narrative with some Knopfler style guitar.

Stylistically it’s a template for the album as a whole. He subtly builds the groove, swaps tones and then goes back to the opening double lines again to cleverly evoke the steady rolling motion of a freeway with a 70 mph speed limit. Yep, he’s ‘Driving On The 44′ and we’re in the back seat.

He’s in his element on ‘Blues 22’, a mellow blues featuring a ripping solo which he announces with a priceless; “here it comes”.

He’s in the same blues zone on the ‘after hours’ blues shuffle of ‘Slinky Too’. Max Middleton doubles on low-down B3 and piano and is the perfect foil for Snowy’s incisive tone, which for all the word sounds like a late night conversation.

And when not seeking out the melodic contours of song with a vocal that the German’s call Sprechstimme, he’s even more eloquent on his guitar.  The solo here is expressive, poised and eloquent and leads to the staggered disguised outro.

There’s a real fluidity to this album on which the lyrics, guitar and subtle band interplay all support the songs organically.

The outstanding ‘Keep On Flying’ encapsulates everything Snowy is about. It’s a very full sounding track for a duo, as Snowy plays  acoustic and electric guitar, synth and bass, while son Tom anchors the track with some muscularity.

His warm tone at 2.47 lifts the track to another level to evoke the aspirational nature of the song: “if you keep reaching for the sky, one day you will find what you’ve been searching for.

If you keep on flying high, the light will surely shine on you. Keep on trying, keep on flying.”

This is a signature Snowy White track on which his plaintive solo combines technique and emotion with echoes of Peter Green.

It’s juxtaposed by the Santana influenced ‘One Woman Girl’, complete with Gregg Rolie style B3 stabs. It’s certainly an uplifting track with lovely piano flurries, but sounds slightly contrived compared to what’s gone before.

There’s still room for the current single ‘Lady Luck (So Mean To Me)’ curiously chosen as the album closer. It’s a sparse funky groove fattened by cool slide, a tremulous solo and rich percussion from Thomas.

‘Driving On The 44’ is an album made with love, care and attention. It feels like meeting an old friend who is still pursuing the same passion all these years later. In doing so Snowy White restates his case as one of the most underrated blues guitarist of our era. ****
