Single review: DYNAZTY – Natural Born Killer

AFM Records [Release date: 26.08.22]

Always underrated, Dynazty is one of the best metal bands around right now.

On this single teaser, ‘Natural Born Killers’, they create a keyboard heavy, symphonic/melodic metal concoction that just bursts with energy and invention. You can hear Nils Molin’s vocal agility and Rob Love Magnusson’s short bursts of spiky, tuneful axework constantly refreshing the page, confirming the chemistry that holds it all together.

The song’s precision machined arrangement adds a welcome level of subtlety and sophistication, absent from so many metal and hard rock recordings nowadays.

And the satisfying, pulse quicking hook is a killer.

The album from which it came, Final Advent, is due out 26 August 22.  ****

Single review: STRYPER Rise To The Call

Frontiers Records [Release date: 24.06.22]

Mining the motherlode of Classic Metal (with an extra melodic twist) seems to come easy to Stryper nowadays.

You might say that on this single release, ‘Rise To The Call’, a trailer for their forthcoming album due out later this year, they sound remarkably lean and confident. But there’s nothing remarkable about it. Michael Sweet’s band has been turning out cleverly crafted melodic rock and hook heavy metal for years now.

‘Rise To The Call’ comes barrelling out the speakers like a juggernaut, powerful, melodic and single minded. The band might be looking back on the long road travelled and sizing up the the shorter road ahead, but this feels fresh.

In the best sense of the word, Sweet is a journeyman. He knows that simple, well written metal, surefooted, with not too many moving parts, punctuated by his nasal howl gets the job done.  ****

Album review: CHRISTINE McVIE – Songbird: A Solo Collection

CHRISTINE McVIE – Songbird: A Solo Collection

Rhino/Warner [Release date 24.6.22]

This is the first release to bear Christine McVie’s name since her excellent 2017 collaboration with Lindsey Buckingham (which was essentially a Fleetwood Mac album without Stevie Nicks).

“Songbird” contains a remixed selection from her 1984 and 2004 solo albums, along with two previously unreleased tracks and a newly orchestrated version of the title track. The booklet includes an in-depth interview by Johnnie Walker, where the background to each song is discussed in detail.

Opening proceedings here, as indeed it did on 2004’s rather overlooked “In The Meantime” album, is the stunning ‘Friend’. A soaring, catchy number, if McVie had still been part of Fleetwood Mac at the time then it would have slotted perfectly onto their “Say You Will” album. Next up, from the same album, is the more mellow ‘Sweet Revenge’.

This collection has been produced and remixed by Glyn Johns, with Guy Fletcher and Ethan Johns adding new instrumentation to the majority of tracks. This helps to give the 1980’s era cuts a more contemporary feel, and also achieves the goal of making this sound like a fairly seamless mix of songs.

The uptempo ‘The Challenge’ dates from 1984’s “Christine McVie” long player and features a distinctive Eric Clapton guitar accompaniment, as well as backing vocals by Lindsey Buckingham. From the same source is the atmospheric Steve Winwood co-write ‘Ask Anybody’, which includes some fine piano synthesizer from Winwood, much in line with the sound of his own solo releases from that period.

The previously unreleased ‘Slow Down’ was originally written for the film American Flyers but never used. A fun and lively, almost power pop, song, it’s been given an added country feel courtesy of Ethan Johns’ slide guitar.

The other cuts from “In The Meantime” are the beautiful love song ‘Northern Star’ (written by her nephew Dan Perfect, who was co-producer and guitarist on that album), the bluesy ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’, and the laidback ‘Givin’ It Back’ which was co-written with one-time Fleetwood Mac guitarist Billy Burnette.

‘All You Gotta Do’, a groovy duet with bass player George Hawkins, dates from the 2004 sessions too but is released for the first time here.

The album climaxes with a new orchestral version of the classic ‘Songbird’. Isolating the vocal track from the “Rumours” version, a string arrangement has been added by Vince Mendoza. It gives the song a stunning new dimension and is the perfect closer to a very diverse selection. ****

Album review: WAX ON WATER – The Drip

WAX ON WATER - The Drip

Howling Tempest Records [Release date 24.06.22]

Wax On Water are a three-piece led by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Maya Damaris, and completed by drummer Garren Orr and guitarist Steven Blessing. They have already released two EPs this year under ‘The Drip’ handle and now Wax On Water unleash their sixteen song debut album.

The lead songs ‘How Long?’ and ‘The Tree’ are the album’s instant tracks, with ‘Don’t Bore Us’ another song with crossover appeal. The latter is based on control freaks who we all sadly get to meet at some stage in our lives.

‘Predictable’ is far from it, with Steven Blessing’s guitar adding that extra bit of musical class. It can lose its way a little on ‘All Over Me’ where the repetitive chorus refrain is a bit too much on repeated plays and the grungy ‘Love Won’t Leave Her’ lacks the spark of much of the album.

The surprise choice of covering the O’Jays tune ‘For The Love Of Money’ is a bold one and they pull it off, in an electro rock style. This and the grandiose pomp of ‘Prologue’ are fine examples of a band willing to go where the music takes them.

Wax On Water certainly pack plenty of musical ideas into ‘The Drip’, which could be the undoing of some bands, however, the album benefits from the focussed concepts and songwriting of Mata Damaris. One of 2022’s more intriguing listens and all the better for it. ***

Gig review: DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Iron Maiden - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

A year ago a special pilot event at Download pointed the way for live music to return:  now in 2022 the UK’s biggest rock and metal festival was back in a recognisable format. It was the biggest sign yet that live music has returned to normal even if the shadow of covid is ever-present.

Download gets a bad rap in many circles, criticised against other domestic and international metal festivals for its sheer size, corporateness and repetitious line-ups, but interestingly  one of my friends attending his first Donington since the old Monsters of Rock days was blown away by the precision organisation and the lack of queues for bars and toilets.

It is also a festival that appeals to a wide range of tastes, of which classic rock is but a small part. But this year two of the three headliners were veterans – indeed Iron Maiden and Kiss were the top two on the bill when I first went in 1988- so the crowd had a notably larger number of older rockers this time.

Indeed without hopping too much from stage to stage it was possible to pick and mix and create a weekend line up of more recent acts but entirely suited to my more traditional tastes – with a slight drop in the number of bands on the main stages each day and thankfully few of the stage clashes that normally present such a dilemma.

DAY 1- KISS, AIRBOURNE, TEMPT, MYLES KENNEDY, KRIS BARRAS BAND, THEORY, WAYWARD SONS

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Friday’s action on the main (Apex) stage began with Wayward Sons, and I had unfinished business having missed Stonedead and their London show for differing reasons in the last year.. While part of the new wave of classic rock, they were one of the few over the weekend with links to the ‘old wave’ in mainman Toby Jepson, sporting a flat cap and a waistcoat emulated by guitarist Sam Wood.

They opened  with a decent song in ‘Feel Good Hit’ and the band were tight and crisp with Sam having a lovely tone on his Gibson but the combination of AC/DC esque riffing  and Toby’s more Mogg-esque writing and storytelling style has still never quite clicked for me.

Old favourites from their 2018 Download appearance such as ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ and ‘Crush’ sat alongside some newer songs of which ‘Big Day’ was the best. Appropriately a short but fast-paced set concluded with ‘To the End’ with a bit of audience participation, to get things off to a solid if unexceptional start.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

However any growing atmosphere was killed stone dead by Theory. For a while in the early 2010’s, they were personal favourites but I had rather lost touch and assumed the name change from  Theory of a Deadman had reflected some sort of musical metamorphosis.

However reassuringly the set was almost entirely those old favourites that mix self-loathing and misogyny with jaunty hooks and choruses, in openers ‘Lowlife’ and ‘Bitch Came Back’, and ‘Hate My Life’.

Alas, not only was the guitar sound  weedy but a festival appearance was the wrong fit for the very laconic approach of these Canadians, not the type to get in the face of the audience and at least pretend to be enthusiastic. The energy levels belatedly picked up with ‘Bad Girlfriend’ (borrowing the Cult’s ‘Fire Woman’ riff) but this was a disappointingly flat performance lacking in urgency.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

It was then a trip to the second (Opus) stage, the area itself big enough for a medium sized festival in its own right, but where the atmosphere is always a bit less frantic, for the Kris Barras Band. This was the fourth time I’ve seen them as a support or on a festival bill in the last few months, and post-pandemic they have accelerated their transition from a blues-based approach to more mainstream hard rock, so for the first time their music was Download-friendly enough to match Kris’ extensive tattoos.

Opening with old favourite ‘Hail Mary’ it was a similar set to their recent support with Thunder with new songs showcased heavily including ‘Dead Horses’, ‘These Voices’ and ‘Who Needs Enemies’, but with space for a couple of extra numbers in ‘Ignite (Light It Up)’, a bit flimsy but with a chorus made for live participation,  and ‘Devil You Know’.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Their biggest issue was a bottom heavy sound which rather drowned out both Kris’ vocals (which benefited from support from second guitarist Josiah J Manning) and his guitar playing. He is also a rather gruff character and I am not sure how well it would have gone down to hear ‘who bought the new album? not f—ing enough of you’.

However set closer ‘My Parade’ went down extremely well as the ‘fall into line or get out of my way,  don’t give a f—- what people say’ singalong would have appealed to a field of anti-establishment metal fans, so, ultimately this was a qualified triumph.

He was followed by Myles Kennedy. If there is a Guinness World Record for the most appearances  at Download, the singer surely holds it having fronted  both Alter Bridge and Slash here on multiple occasions, and personally this was consolation for missing out on his solo tour late last year.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

His outfit was a power trio but once again that bass heavy sound meant that  soulful and slightly anguished voice was rather drowned out.  Songs from latest album ‘The Ides of March’ included  opener ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’ and ‘A Thousand  Words’  which was easily the most impressive, and there was even a trip to his pre-AB band The Mayfield Four which also included his drummer Zia Uddin , for ‘High’.

He also braved the noise of other stages to play Slash’s ‘World on Fire’ acoustically and there was a lot of bluesier material, much on a resonator style guitar, with slide prominent, notably on ‘Tell It Like It Is’ and a lengthy ‘In Stride’, featuring some audience call and response. Luckily this wouldn’t be the last I would see of his talents all weekend.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

My own preferred genre of melodic rock rarely gets much of a look-in at Download but one exception was rising New York City outfit Tempt, who the week before had impressed me at the Black Heart in London. Luckily the schedule allowed for a trip to the covered Dogtooth tent but as I ambled over with some food I could hear that a scheduling change had brought them on nearly half an hour early. I then put the supposed inability of men to multi task to the test as I combined joining in clapping and punching the air, making notes on my phone, taking pics and eating a tub of pulled pork topped macaroni cheese, all at the same time.

The set flew by at pace with  a quintet – ‘Hideaway’,’ Burn Me Down’, ‘Living Dangerous ‘, ’Camouflage’ and ‘Roses’  –that were all punchy with massive chorus hooks. In contrast ‘Golden Tongue’ saw the band and dapper bassist Chris Gooden in particular laying down some vintage late seventies west coast grooves.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

It was not just the music that stood out from the norm, with tousle-haired singer Zach Allen in a bright blue-green jacket and guitarist Harrison Marcello rocking a plum-coloured suit with a cut out of the wardrobe of Miami Vice. They closed with a cover (in its fast ‘Live Killers’ incarnation) of ‘We Will Rock You’ with Zach stunning people by holding himself out at the front of the stage and going crowd surfing.

Their performance benefited from a better stage, sound and lights than that London show and although the tent was far from full they made some new friends, including my companions for the weekend who were blown away by their first experience of them.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

It was then back to the second stage where Airbourne were second on the bill to Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes. By rights the repetitive combination of AC/DC and Rose Tattoo riffs and the madcap antics of singer and lead guitarist Joel O’Keeffe should have worn thin by now, 14 years since I first saw them here, but as at Ramblin’ Man in 2019 they were exactly the right fun festival fodder, especially in the early evening slot where the atmosphere is often at its best.

‘Ready to Rock’ is the perfect opener with its ‘who-oh-oh’ rumbling chanting and ‘Back in the Game’ went down just as well before during ‘Girls in Black’ rode deep into the crowd on a roadie’s shoulders. As Myles Kennedy had earlier sung, ‘they say that a picture says a thousand  words’ and the joy on Joel’s face as he sauntered through a forest of raised hands spoke volumes for the sheer unbridled joy of rock n roll at its finest.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

It scarcely mattered that some of the material such as ‘Boneshaker’, ‘Breakin’ Outta Hell’ and ‘Live It Up’ (preceded by his drummer brother Ryan setting off what I think was an old fashioned airraid siren)  was highly ordinary.

Some of Joel’s traditional antics were absent- no speaker climbing nor setting up Lemmy’s Bar, and the beer thrown was in plastic cups rather than tinnies. However in that unmistakable barking voice (does he even speak like that at home?) he, better than anyone, captured our feelings at being able to do this after three years, in particular when he thanked the stage crews for their efforts.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

However the usual lengthy set closer ‘Running Wild’ featured a new routine, getting all the crowd to crouch down then rise up as one, which provided quite a sight though my friends and others of Saga-eligible years struggled to get up again quite as quickly. Terrific fun was the only way to describe it.

There was plenty of time to return to the main stage and venture near the front for the final appearance on UK soil of Kiss. Yes, we have of course heard that more than once before but the valedictory remarks on stage of Paul Stanley suggested this was pretty conclusive.

Kiss - Download Festival - 10 June 2022

The opening was naturally spectacular – after staring at giant inflatables of the band either side of the stage curtain, an intro tape of Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll’ stoked the anticipation and after a video cam of the band allegedly running from dressing room to stage invited a suspension of disbelief, huge explosions marked the band coming down from high on individual podiums as the curtain fell.

The music was just as spectacular with an incredibly strong opening 1-2 of ‘Detroit Rock City’ and ‘Shout it Out Loud’ driving people crazy – other than those trying to spot how much was live after the notorious sound malfunction at a previous show had just come to light. The atmosphere notably quietened down for ‘Deuce’ though I was relishing one of my favourite Kiss numbers with Tommy Thayer doing a great job on the guitar solos.

This was Kiss’ fifth appearance at Donington in both its incarnations – whereas the first in 1988 was in the make up free era, and the 1996 reunion and 2008 Kiss Alive themed show concentrated on the original band, this was for me a more balanced career wide greatest hits.

Indeed we had three in succession from the eighties – ‘War Machine’ (unbelievable that one of Kiss’ heaviest numbers was penned by Bryan Adams) with Gene Simmons taking hold of a flaming stake, ‘Heaven’s On Fire’ where Paul’s vocals were suspiciously fresh and the always rollicking ‘I Love it Loud’.  Even ‘Say Yeah’ with its overly simple chorus grew on me.

‘Cold Gin’ was another highlight with the band sounding impressive while  ‘Lick it Up’ (described by Paul with typical lack of subtlety as ‘this is about something you put in your mouth’) has changed over the years, especially with its snatch of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, in contrast to the way most of their songs are delivered faithfully to the originals.

Kiss - Download Festival - 10 June 2022

While Gene appeared lively on numbers like ‘Calling Dr Love’, I was very surprised when Paul introduced ‘Tears Are Falling’, from that glammy eighties period where he seemed to be carrying the Kiss torch alone. Though it went down well it seemed a puzzling choice, as he did not sing large parts of it, while I was also more aware than before how, among a number of devices to mask his declining vocal prowess, both Tommy and Eric Singer unobtrusively filled out a lot of vocal parts.

You can carp about what enhancements there were to the live sound, or even the quality of the material (‘Psycho Circus’ a case in point) but a Kiss show has always been about more than that. Solos that would be boring in any other band’s hands were a vehicle for more stage show spectaculars, then the inevitable set pieces arrived, beginning with Gene chewing his blood capsule and being hoisted high during ‘God of Thunder’.

Kiss - Download Festival - 10 June 2022

Paul then sailed out on a pulley to the mixing tower and delivered ‘Love Gun’ from there, and for good measure ‘I Was Made for Loving You’ which went down extremely well, before another undisputed early Kiss classic in ‘Black Diamond’ was drawn out to its limit, ending in a welter of explosions.

The first encore saw a piano wheeled out for Eric to do his Peter Criss on ‘Beth’, then Paul spoke of the days when they put everything into following up ‘Kiss Alive’ with a set of anthems on ‘Destroyer’, and in a change from previous UK setlists they slipped in a lively ‘Do You Love Me’ complete with balloons released from the stage.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

But there could only be one climax, ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ with a carnival atmosphere as the pyrotechnic explosions got even louder and industrial quantities of confetti were pumped from the stage. As we headed out to the strains of ‘God Gave Rock n Roll to You’ it summed up perfectly not only both what we have missed for the past three years, but also the larger than life, spectacular showmanship that belongs to an era which sadly we may not see again.

DAY 2- IRON MAIDEN, SHINEDOWN, MONSTER TRUCK, THOSE DAMN CROWS, DIRTY HONEY

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Day two opened early with a solitary trip to the second stage for the UK debut of Dirty Honey, the latest hotly tipped band to emerge from California. First impressions were that like both Rival Sons and Greta Van Fleet, they channel a retro spirit both in their looks and musical style while Marc LaBelle had a very Robert Plant-like tinge to his high-pitched vocals.

‘Gypsy’ got things off to a flying start, while ‘California  Dreaming’ was the most impressive song of a set which also featured the likes of ‘Break You’ and ‘The Wire’. ‘Another Last Time’ was a slow and bluesy ballad where the influence of the Black Crowes, who they have been supporting in the USA, came to the fore and the final song of a set that had flown by in ‘Rolling 7s’, with a catchy refrain of ‘need a little loving’, owed more to an Aerosmith groove. While offering nothing new, they pulled it off with swagger and style and are clearly a band we will be hearing a lot more of.

Those Damn Crows - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

It was back to the main stage- where in a Download first the action was running significantly late-  for the rest of the day, starting with one of the bands for whom the  timing of the pandemic was particularly galling in Those Damn Crows, who were on the verge of a major breakthrough with the release of second album ‘Point of No Return’. This was my first opportunity to catch them since 2019 though their festival and touring schedule is one of the busiest of 2022.

What originally drew me to this band, who would not normally be my natural musical bedfellows, was the remarkable on stage energy and charisma of singer Shane Greenall, and the setting did not faze him as he prowled the stage like a caged tiger, proudly proclaiming his Welsh pride and confident enough to go down the pit area between the two sides of the crowd. While his band members were more low key, they played with impressive efficiency.

Those Damn Crows - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

Songs like opener ‘Who Did it’ and ‘Blink of an Eye’ have that big widescreen sound of an Audioslave, Shinedown or even Foo Fighters. ‘Sick of Me’ with the added offstage sounds of some modern keyboards,  and the big hooks of ‘Sin on Skin’ and ‘Go Get  It’ particularly impressed.  However his stage presence gave an alchemy even to some of the numbers that were solid rather than spectacular.

They closed with signature song ‘Rock and Roll Ain’t Dead’ and though the song structure is an unusual one, the rumbling ‘who-oh-oh-oh’ chanting is perfect for a festival anthem. It concluded  an absolute triumph which augurs well for a progression up the bill in future as one of the few bands whose approach lends itself to bigger stages.

They also provide a challenge for Monster Truck to follow, and one which will be repeated when the two tour together this autumn. However the Canadians are now seasoned Download regulars and made an excellent start with a couple of old favourites in ‘Don’t Tell Me How to Love’ and ‘Old Train’.

Monster Truck - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

I had the impression when I first saw them that they were on the sludgy stoner rock side of things, but over the years they seem to have moved closer to the classic rock retro mainstream- indeed the way the keys of Brandon Bliss provided an undercurrent to forceful singer Jon Harvey’s thudding bass even reminds me a little of Uriah Heep.

They took the bold (or in a festival sense foolhardy) step of playing several yet to be released new songs, including ‘Golden Woman’ and ‘Live Free’, while ‘Country Livin’ had a Skynyrd or Blackberry Smoke feel  to take them even further away from their roots. ‘For The Sun’ was distinctly bluesy but fortunately there was more familiar material to end in ‘Sweet Mountain River’ and ‘The Lion’.  After thinking when tour dates were recently announced,  ‘no, seeing them at Download will be enough’ I was tempted to change my mind after this quietly impressive performance.

Shinedown - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

Next up for me was another Download stalwart in Shinedown, who are used to playing big venues in  America and this showed in their stage craft which, almost arrogantly, had no need even for the logo backdrop that the majority of bands used. It is a tradition of Download that Live Nation release winter tour dates for many of the festival acts there and they were one such, leaving me wondering whether this would be sufficient or whether I could resist the temptation to see a headline show.

They opened with ‘The Saints of Violence and Innuendo’ from their yet to be released album ‘Planet Zero’, Brent Smith marching across the stage in serious fashion and barking out some staccato, semi-spoken vocals. On ‘Devil In The Next Room’, with its ‘about to get heavy’ chorus and ‘Cut the Cord’ it struck me how their music has changed over the years, not necessarily for the better in my opinion, with relatively little guitar amidst his powerful vocals, the big drum sounds of Barry Kerch and assorted loops and synths.

The singer, whose ‘turn to your left’ shtick remains unchanged, has an earnest manner and  comes over as a cross between a life coach and a US platoon drill instructor, but he and the band deserve credit for addressing serious contemporary topics, as evidenced by another new song in the title track of the new album.

‘Get Up’ with a piano intro from bassist Eric Bass (sic) is typical of their recent foray into modern pop values, but something clicked and I progressively got into the set, the huge hooks of ‘Unity’ and its ‘put your hands in the air’ chorus, and another worthy message in ‘Bully’, while Brent got the crowd jumping up and down at the start of ‘Enemies’ and I enjoyed ‘Monsters’  more than I expected to.

Shinedown - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

His stentorian vocal delivery of the ballad ‘Second Chance’ was unmatched all weekend, and the momentum was firmly with them as crowd favourite ‘Diamond Eyes’ (boom-lay-boom) that rolls all their various influences into one song, led into the brutality of closer ‘Sound of Madness’.

So ultimately the verdict was that not only was the headline tour a must but in many ways they might have been the perfect second on the bill to Maiden, who they supported on the Book of Souls tour. As it was that honour fell to veterans The Deftones. I went for food during their set but caught the last half hour, manoeuvring into a decent place near the front for Maiden.  I can’t pretend I enjoyed it but was surprised how many of the songs seemed more inspired by the electronic sounds of later Depeche Mode or Radiohead than the alternative metal I had assumed, at least before a couple of shoutier old favourites finished the set.

Iron Maiden - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

Over 40 years into their career there is still no bigger draw at a metal festival than Iron Maiden. However Download 2022 found them at a crossroads. When their appearance was originally announced in late 2019, it was a fitting finale to the ‘Legacy of the Beast’ which had toured the UK in 2018 and in my view was the finest I have ever seen Maiden in over 35 years of following them. However since that date they released a new album in ’Senjutsu’ which was not only critically acclaimed, but the band made noises that the prospect of playing the album in full at some point appealed.

In the event they reached an uneasy compromise. So while passing the time with some classic early eighties metal  over the sound system we saw a stage being erected of oriental-style pagodas, and the set opened with the title track of the new album,  Bruce Dickinson with his greying hair in a top knot battling with Eddie as a samurai style warrior. The song was very far from immediate but with an acoustic guitar intro from Adrian Smith, ‘Stratego’ was a distinct improvement and the gig really came to the boil with ‘The Writing On The Wall’, the way people joined in suggesting that it will become a Maiden live favourite beyond the lifetime of the album.

Iron Maiden - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

However at that point with Bruce saying ‘excuse us while we change house’  there was a brief interlude where the crews dismantled the ‘Senjutsu’ stage before our eyes to reveal the church-themed ‘Legacy’ stage. It was a very  British ‘make do and mend’ approach , as Kiss would never have let the mystique behind the curtain be revealed in that way.

The rest of the set was a truncated and reordered version of that tour, surprisingly starting with ‘Revelations’ which is one of my all-time Maiden favourites, not least as it shows the influence of Wishbone Ash on Steve Harris’ songwriting in the twin lead solo of Dave Murray and Adrian and its combination of quiet and faster passages. Nevertheless during one of the latter my appreciation was interrupted by the crowd surging forward to form a small circle pit which I sidestepped.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Bruce then said words to the effect of ‘the last three years have been a bit s*t, but that ends here’, and that lent an extra poignancy, if any were needed,  to ‘Blood Brothers’. On a musical level it was encouraging to see Janick Gers, who can often play third fiddle to his guitar partners, shining on the celtic-themed guitar parts.

As with the original tour the joy was in hearing some classics which have been rarely played over the years complete with props, Bruce in a hooded cloak at the start of ‘Sign of the Cross’, which he made his own and featured lengthy but enjoyable guitar interplay between Dave and Janick, and a rollicking ‘The Flight of Icarus’ in front of a giant backdrop  of the eponymous winged character.

Iron Maiden - Download Festival - 11 June 2022

It seemed the set had hardly begun but already we were into the ‘home straight’ of traditional live favourites, beginning with ‘Fear of the Dark’, Bruce prowling the stage in Victorian villain costume and the circle pit near me in full swing with a ringleader orchestrating the movements. The pair of what I think of as Maiden’s quintessential songs in ‘Number Of The Beast’ and ‘Hallowed be Thy Name’ seemed to fly past in an instant before ‘Iron Maiden’ closed the set with a hologram of a giant mythical beast poking out of the backdrop in scary fashion.

If the set had seemed a tad short the encores more than made up for it and the quality just got better and better. Moved from its usual position in the set, ‘The Trooper’ had the crowd going crazy while Bruce indulged in a sword fight with a giant Eddie in their matching red tunics, while the way that ‘The Clansman’ gathers momentum has made it an established fan favourite as well as another  Blaze-era tune that Bruce has made his own. There could barely be anyone in the 80,000 odd crowd that was not singing along to ‘Run To The Hills’ which was a suitable set closer, or so I thought.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

However there was one more classic moment I’d forgotten about, as the life sized replica spitfire dangled overhead and after a recording of Churchill’s speech, on stormed a goggle wearing Bruce to lead a fast and furious version of ‘Aces High’ that had opened the original run of ‘legacy’ shows. In my opinion a legacy of these tours is that it should be permanently restored to the set.

With a set list to die for, the best sound (at least from my vantage point) I’ve heard at a Maiden show in some while and their singer in arguably the best voice of his whole career, it was no wonder I and others were joining in with the strains of ‘always look on the bright side of life’ as we left the arena.

DAY 3- MYLES KENNEDY, THE DARKNESS, VOLBEAT, TREMONTI, MASSIVE WAGONS, POWERWOLF

The Sunday was an opportunity to take things a little easier after the exertions of getting to the front for the previous two night’s headliners, but there was still plenty to enjoy and sample a few less familiar (to me)bands. One such were Powerwolf who a number of friends have really got into, and whose presence on the main stage was timely as that whole Euro power metal scene has been oddly underrepresented at Download over the years.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

All covered in various degrees of warpaint and battle fatigues, as with many German bands there is a knowing humour around their daftness. Singer Attila Dorn’s multi-octave voice was extremely impressive and he constantly worked the crowd including one chant that seemed to borrow the melody of fellow countrymen Kraftwerk’s  ‘The Model’!

It’s hard not to warm to a band who can name a song ‘Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend’ and it helped even further that it had the catchiest hook of the set.  Some of the recurring themes became a little repetitive  (‘Blood for Blood’  and closer ‘We Drink Your Blood’ by way of examples) but it was easy to see why they have built such a large cult following.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

It was back to the second stage for a while for a pair of bands starting with new wave of classic rock darlings Massive Wagons. I’ve had mixed experiences of them in the past year- they absolutely owned Stonedead festival but a support to The Darkness was oddly flat. Fortunately on this occasion they atoned with a trio of some of their better and more memorable songs- the Rick Parfitt tribute ‘Back to the Stack’, ‘Billy Balloon Head’ and ‘Banging on Your Stereo’.

Singer Baz Mills, sporting a checkerboard jacket, culottes and long socks that made him look like a cross between a chef and Rick Nielsen, was as hyperactive as ever and made full use of a dais on each side of the stage, even if his fast-paced high-pitched patter was not always comprehensible.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

I read over the weekend words of wisdom on another festival’s forum that festival crowds just want to see a band having a good time and respond in kind and so the Wagons were onto a winner. They also played a new song but ironically given that it boasted a more mature and accessible musical arrangements, it’s very title ‘F**k the Haters’ seems to preclude radio play.

The music is loud and unsubtle and in the case of ‘Generation Prime’ almost punky, yet Baz’s t-shirt saying ‘eat pies and talk about men’s mental health’ summed up the sides of the band. Many of their songs are humourous – the call and response (‘I say keema you say naan, I say rogan you say Josh’) of ‘The Curry Song’ being a case in point- yet others, such as ‘Nails’,  address bigotry, bullying and other forms of human vulnerability.  A perfect live anthem ‘In It Together’ closed probably the best set I have seen yet from the Lancastrians.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Next up was an altogether more serious minded proposition in Tremonti as eponymous guitarist Mark became the second Alter Bridge member to grace this stage this weekend ahead of their main band releasing a new album and touring this winter.

Despite a low-key, hoodie-wearing stage presence, he is a more than decent singer in his own right and songs like ‘My Last Mistake’ and ‘A Dying Machine’ some of the songs are not dissimilar to his parent band, albeit heavier and less memorable, while the title track of latest album ‘Marching In Time’ was a brooding epic.

Ballad ‘The First The Last’ and the heavier ‘Another Heart’ had a commercial edge and it was easy to see how they might have been US hits around the millennium in the hands of previous band Creed, while a frantic, though still just melodic, ‘Wish You Well’, demonstrated his professed love of old-school speed and thrash metal.

After watching Baroness from afar and enjoying some of their twin guitar passages, the songs less so, I headed to the main stage one more time for Volbeat. I’d not seen them since Download in 2013, since when they have not only grown in popularity to the extent they were third from top of the bill, but have by many accounts moved in a more mainstream direction.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

They opened with ‘The Devils Bleeding Crown’ and though ‘Pelvis on Fire’ was like a rockabilly Motorhead, the likes of ‘Temple of Egur’ and ‘Lola Montez’ had catchy melodic hooks. Whatever your musical perspective their songs are fun and accessible, and they meld into metal influences from fifties rock n roll and even Johnny Cash (in the form of ‘Sad Man’s Tongue’). Singer Michael Poulsen also has that low-key and archetypally Scandinavian relaxed likeability.

Even the Metallica-ish ‘A Warriors Call’ with its ‘get ready to rumble’ battle cry segued into the old Dusty Springfield and Tourists cover ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’. ‘Rose’ was one of a couple of songs  which reminded me of what the Offspring might be like if they were tattooed Danish greasers rather than OC punks.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

On both ‘Wait a Minute My Girl’ and ‘Die to Live’ they were even joined by  guest sax and keyboard players looking like extras from an eighties ZZ top video, though ‘Seal The Deal’ and ‘The Devil Rages On’ were closer to the metal I was expecting.  Their final song ‘Still Counting’, which started with an almost reggae beat before becoming significantly heavier, summed up the variety of a diverse and very enjoyable set.

While people moved in for Korn, I went in the other direction back to a rapidly filling second stage for The Darkness. There was a surprise as Justin Hawkins took to the stage with a substantial haircut and sporting a pink cowboy shirt and matching slacks.

The music was reassuringly familiar though. With only a short set to play with, recent album ‘Motorheart’ was largely overlooked other than the celtic-tinged ‘Heart Explodes’ and instead it was straight into old favourites with a 1-2 of ‘Growing on Me’ and ‘One Way Ticket To Hell’ that could scarcely have been bettered, followed by what Justin said was brother Dan’s favourite riff in ‘Givin Up’.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

Though it is nice to see them making a steady stream of  new music, after crashing and burning first time round,  the rather disjointed songwriting of  ‘Japanese Prisoner of Love’ really suffered sandwiched between the ‘Permission To Land’ favourites in the power ballad ‘Love Is Only A Feeling’ and ‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’.

With some time in the set still to go I was quite surprised to hear Justin say they were about to play their biggest hit and he broke down in great detail the structure of the song and where people were expected to jump and go crazy. It was a moot point whether  people would have needed any encouragement to do so anyway for  ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love’,  surely one of the best known and most-loved rock songs of Download’s lifetime.DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

I was puzzled though,  both why they ended their allotted 50 minute slot five minutes early, and that they did so – channelling Slade’s famous 1980 Reading Festival show – with their seasonal song ‘Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)’. However the reaction suggested I was in a minority in finding this peculiar.

The headliner was a band who similarly divide opinion. I must admit the Steel Panther joke wore thin for me long ago and by rights the ~#metoo movement should have spelled their final death knell. Yet this would have been a minority view at Download- as I left the second stage site, I have never seen it quite so packed with even the walkways at the back impassable. I suspect for most, other than confirmed devotees of the main stage headliners Biffy Clyro,  they were a more entertaining and less challenging end to the weekend, and the main part of the arena was correspondingly almost deserted.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

I had one final appointment which was Myles Kennedy’s second set of the weekend in a packed Dogtooth tent. If that Guinness record wasn’t his already, then it was now. It had been billed as an acoustic performance but the stage set up suggested otherwise and indeed as his three piece came on he rather sheepishly explained that they had come to the conclusion such a set would be a little out of place.

Kicking off this time with ‘Get Along’, many of the songs were the same as Friday’s set albeit with better sound but there were a few changes. ‘Haunted By Design’ had a long guitar solo in fifties rockabilly style while the one acoustic song was one of those uplifting Alter Bridge ballads in ‘All Ends Well’.

DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, Donington Park, Leicestershire, 10-12 June 2022

The melodies of ‘Songbird’ were nothing less than marvellous and he ended a perfect coda to the weekend with ‘In Stride, ’ a lengthy  workout with plenty of slide and with atypical flamboyance, he darted from one side of the stage to the next to pose like a blues rock guitar hero.

Download 2022 was a triumph not just on musical grounds  with some memorable performances but on other levels- the line-up pretty much held, it was dry and sunny for long periods, and it somehow seemed more relaxed and less edgy, with the a-hole quotient notably down on previous years, so relieved were people to be back in the saddle.  With the news that next year’s 20th anniversary festival will be extended to four days, speculation was mounting what special acts might be in store but for sentimental reasons this one will be hard to top.

Album review: TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT – Day By Day

Timothy B. Schmit chatted to David Randall about his music with tracks from the new album.  First broadcast on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, 3 July 2022

TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT - Day By Day

[Release date: Digital - 06.05.22; CD/Vinyl 02.09.22]

Best known as one of the mainstays in the Eagles’ ever changing line-up, since 1977, Timothy B Schmit releases that rare thing – a solo album – and his first since 2016.

The whole approach reminds me of those classic Asylum albums of the 1970s majoring on rich harmonies, memorable melodies, solid songwriting and stellar musicianship.

The opener and single ‘Simple Man’ has some lovely lyrics and is graced by the presence of Lindsey Buckingham one of several big name contributors.

Naturally you’ll hear elements of the Eagles in the mix throughout but overall it’s a superb pop rock album.

Nothing is too extreme and it’s all very polite.  ‘The Next Rainbow’ ups the tempo and develops into a welcome groove whilst second single ‘Heartbeat’ starts out a little like ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’ (Schmit’s first major co-write and lead vocal in the Eagles) and then has echoes of ‘Driver’s Seat’ (Sniff ‘N’ The Tears).

The folky ‘Question Of The Heart’ evokes the classic (and classy) days of Neil Young and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.  This is repeated on ‘Something You Should Know’ whilst ‘Grinding Stone’ features John Fogerty and one-time Asylum alumni Jackson Browne.

There are some real standouts, those early singles, ‘Feather In The Wind’ with its Beach Boy-esque harmonies, and ‘Taste Like Candy’ with guitar from Kenny Wayne Shepherd.  The album only really dips when Schmit goes doo-wop on ‘Conflicted’ but things are restored with the Tom Petty-esque ‘Where We Belong’.

Like his long term band, most of these songs would have fitted into a 1970s FM radio schedule, immediately evoking the laid back sun, style and nostalgia of the West Coast.

A lot of older musicians don’t seem able (or willing) to conjure up songs of love and loyalty but several themes here are just that.  Schmit is 74.

Close your eyes, hope for some sunshine, and wallow in the summer of love. 2022 style.  ****1/2

Book review: On track…JIMI HENDRIX – every album, every song (Emma Stott)

On track...JIMI HENDRIX - every album, every song (Emma Stott)

SonicBond Publishing [Publication date 27.05.22]

It was my childhood friend Colin Cheesman who introduced me to Jimi Hendrix’s music c.1970.  I was particularly impressed with the screen print he’d made of a classic image used on the Voodoo Chile picture sleeve following the guitarist’s death.  Then came ‘Cry Of Love’ the first posthumous release in 1971.  I wrote a gift token winning summary of Hendrix’s work for the school magazine.  I was hooked, and amassed a considerable collection of albums and books thereafter.

To compress Hendrix into sub-150 pages is not an easy task and especially when – like The Beatles – there have been endless, erudite, analyses of the artist’s work over the years.  Of course, Stott draws on this rich seam of analysis although without providing her list of secondary sources.

As an English teacher, you would expect the book to read well, and it does, and she has not been afraid to add her own flourishes.  Of ‘Purple Haze’: “…the rundown the guitar neck at the close is…either a sigh of exhaustion or thwarted lust…There is no denying the track’s voluptuous carnality…”  Following her literary instincts, Stott also pays as much attention to the lyrics as the music.

She rightly singles out the 2000 multi-disc set as indispensable and also dissects the various “legacy” albums that came out via the Hendrix Estate from 2010.  Before that only ‘South Saturn Delta’ and ‘First Rays…’ (1997) are discussed from the plethora of posthumous releases.

In the 1990s there was a profusion of bootlegs before the Estate got involved and there are some missed opportunities to mention alternate versions that have never appeared officially whilst still remaining valid.  ‘Astro Man’ is a good example which also exists as a rather tasty extended instrumental.

There are many alternative tomes to investigate such as Kevin la Gendre (2020) but the book works as an easy-to-digest overview and first dib, homing in on the main releases during Hendrix’s lifetime as well as the key compilations that followed.  ****

Book review: On track… OPETH, PETER HAMMILL, LITTLE FEAT, LAURA NYRO

SonicBond Publishing [Publication dates February-May 2022]

On track ... Opeth (Book)

You tend to think of Opeth as one of the “newer” prog metal outfits and then you realise they started out in the late 1980s.  Since that time they’ve released 13 studio albums. Jordan Blum plunders (and credits) a variety of online sources for his narrative.

Given that Opeth are a complex band covering black/death metal, jazz rock and prog metal in their 30 year history it is not an easy task of dissection.  Blum achieves a good balance of critique and compliments (he rates the debut ‘Orchid’(1995) as the weakest album) and in the absence of a published biography a great place to learn more about the band.  ****

It might be overlooked that the frontman of prog rock legends Van Der Graaf Generator has released over 30 solo albums.  And, he is still going strong!  Most recently fronting the band playing UK live dates in February.

Richard Rees Jones book must be commended as the first-ever attempt to distil Peter Hammill‘s extensive output starting with 1971′s ‘Fools Mate’.  He also emphasises Hammill’s eclecticism which, in truth, may have alienated some.  You could call him the David Bowie of Prog because throughout his career he has pushed boundaries and embraced everything from electronica to punk.

Rees Jones epiphany came in the early 1990s when he saw Hammill perform a small gig in the musician’s home town of Bath.  He does a fine job of interpretation.  It’s just a shame that he couldn’t base his book on an interview with the man himself.   Although an index is available online.   ****

On track ... Little Feat (Book)

Little Feat are a band I always thought I should get into more than I have.  Will  Georg Purvis’ book make any difference?

The band seemingly picked up more plaudits from fellow musicians than the punters. Perhaps the lack of a hit single and their frontman Lowell George’s descent into drugs and alcoholism didn’t help wider appreciation.  He died aged just 34.

Purvis’ highlights the band’s best moments (‘Feats Don’t Fail Me Now’ (1974) and the live ‘Waiting For Columbus’ (1978)) whilst covering the post-George years.  ‘Rooster Rag’ appeared in 2012 with keyboard player Bill Payne the remaining original member although bassist Kevin Gradney joined the band as early as 1972.

If you need Little Feat let Purvis be your podiatrist.  ****

Can anyone name one song (or hit?) by Laura Nyro?  No, I can’t either.  But the singer songwriter has been very influential, with not least Joni Mitchell and Elton John naming her in despatches.

Philip Ward’s survey will be welcomed, therefore, to give more in depth analysis of her solo output and weaving her story in between (relying heavily on the official biography by Michelle Kort).  Nyro died from ovarian cancer at the age of 50 in 1997 and there have been several posthumous live releases, covered here.

Strangely there’s no reference to the compilation ‘Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro’ overseen by Nyro before her death and which is a good starting off place for the uninitiated.

Her first studio album was in 1967 and the singer songwriter was not easy to pigeon hole, hence she has perhaps more of a cult following certainly in the UK.  Her albums mix rock, pop, soul, jazz and even theatre.  Philip Ward’s exposition is enlightening.  ****

Album review : TYGERS OF PAN TANG – 1985-87 (3 CD Boxset)

Cherry Red / HNE [Release date 24.06.22]

Arguably there are two Tygers Of Pan Tang. This boxset features Tygers 2.0.

CD1: The Wreck-age (1985)
CD2: Burning In The Shade (1987) and
CD3: The Wreck-age Demos and the Burning In The Shade Demos

The band’s albums prior to 1985 inhabited the world of NWOBHM. It’s fair to claim that they were jostling for pre-eminence with other marquee names on the block, like Saxon and Iron Maiden. In 1983, four albums into their contract, a serious dispute with then label, MCA, led to the band disbanding.

Two years later it reformed and, aiming to get ahead of the curve, it left the fading attractions of New Wave Metal behind and like fellow travellers, Def Leppard, it pursued a melodic hard rock agenda. The Wreck-Age recording was the result. The Tygers 2.0.

It met with bafflement from the band’s traditional audience. And it took a pounding in the music press. This was no metallised magic, orchestrated by Mutt Lange, and yet it stretches a clearly limited budget into corners it had no right to reach.

The keyboard synths and electronic drums aside, there are some strong choruses here, and the riffs are finely calibrated. A handful of songs, ‘Waiting’, ‘Innocent Eyes’ and ‘All Change Faces’ and perhaps too, the lyrically ungainly ‘Desert Of No Love’ show that the band was perfectly capable of writing radio friendly hooks.

The band’s sound is further thinned out on follow up, Burning In The Shade. The songwriting remains strong in places, and the AOR flavour is sharp, but the band and producer just can’t seem to find enough beefed up, roadworthy arrangements.

Like many bands who tried to follow in Def Leppard’s backdraft, the Tygers got sucked into the slipstream, frequently complicating a simple concept, losing them more fans than they gained. Only ‘The First, The Only One’ and ‘Dream Ticket’ escape unscathed.

Turns out then, that The Demos CD is the key collection of recordings here. Without realising, it sets out on the road less travelled … the route the band could have taken, instead of pursuing lowest common denominator AOR.

The classy ‘Undercurrent’, pivoting on a bass heavy groove, has a hook with growth potential. And considering the band’s AOR direction, how did they let ‘You’re On Your Own’ get past them? Its regal, marching metre could have stepped neatly into a Styx show tune.

Two more tracks indicate the band’s abilities, if not its judgment… ‘Time To Regret’, a zippy pop ditty, and ‘Are You There”s Westcoast Rock inclination, filled out with sunbursts of Steely Dan harmonies, is a warm delight.

Where’s Quality Control when you need them?

The boxset comes with brand new liner notes from NWOBHM expert, John Tucker, who sheds further light on the band’s change of direction. ***

Album review: PAUL DI’ANNO’s BATTLEZONE – Killers in The Battlezone (3CD Boxset)

Cherry Red [release date: 24.06.22]

The career of the currently wheelchair bound singer, Paul Di’Anno has been a journey of detours, dead ends, drug addiction and detainment.

His public profile as a musician began with heavy metal band, Iron Maiden. His 4 year stint as the band’s vocalist has since been well documented.

Post Maiden, this 3 CD package sets out what many music music critics consider to be his creative high points … the two Battlezone albums, Fighting Back (1986) and Children Of Madness (1987), plus the Paul DiAnno and The Killers’ US recording from 2000, Live At The Whiskey.

CD1: Fighting Back (1986)
The punk metal title track, ‘Fighting Back’, a scratchy, garage rock attack on the establishment, opens the album. Swiftly followed by ‘Welcome To The Battlezone’, a raw, powerful piece that catapults us into a London of the future, where law and order has disintegrated and street violence is rife. Both are driving, elemental tracks. Maybe not original, but radical in the way they are presented.
They tell us where the band are musically and mentally (all songs bar one were written by guitarist Jay Hurley).
The theme of anguish and conflict is burned into every lyric as we move through the rest of the album, with ‘Running Blind’ and ‘Welfare Warrior’ perhaps carrying more fire than the others.
Bonus track ‘Rising Star’ is taken from 1987 compilation/sampler album, “Metal Killers Kollection”. ****

CD2 : Children Of Madness (1987)
An acrimonious split with guitarist John Hurley while on tour left a huge hole where the songwriting used to be. And so all four members of the “new, improved” line-up contributed to the songs on Children Of Madness.
NWOBHM fans loved it, critics remained divided.
Replacing the previous album’s lo-fi mutant metal with a classier hard rock sound, most notably on standout tracks, ‘Nuclear Breakdown’ and ‘Metal Tears’ was anathema to some.
For many many others, the power and range of Di’Anno’s vocals on this album, combined with a smoother, slicker production, dragged strong songs, like the manic ‘Rip It Up’ and ‘Children Of Madness’ the track, out into the light of day.

A couple of bonus tracks on this CD. ‘To The Limit’, previously a Japan only track, and ‘Drawn Under’, which appeared exclusively on the “Elementals” sampler album. ***1/2

CD3 : Killers – Live At The Whiskey (2000)

Di’Anno and his voice had been through a lot by 2000. And yet they both come through the dark notes and industrial clamour of this live album intact.
As you might expect, it’s full on. Di’Anno live is a never knowingly underdone event.
Raw and raucous, the band go for power thrash metal early on with their own songs, ‘Impaler’ and ‘Protector’. Then close the show with a flurry of knockout punches, delivering rootsy, Iron Maiden metal right to our door with ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ and ‘Sanctuary’.
It’s an assured performance and a much better live album than we might expect. ****

Di’Anno is currently hospitalised in Croatia. He awaits “the most complicated and difficult of all orthopaedic surgeries” on his right leg. Reports suggest that if the surgery fails, amputation will be necessary. A crowdfunded £11,000 has been raised to help pay for the surgery. Iron Maiden have offered to cover the remaining costs.

Album review: JORN – Over The Horizon Radar

Frontiers Music [Release date 17.06.22]

Jorn Lande has worked with guitarist Tore Moren since The Snakes in 1998.

These two have been in each other’s company for so long that they must by now have developed some kind of musical telepathy.

With Lande and Moren on top form, the rest of the band – Adrian SB, guitars, Nik Mazzucconi, bass, Alessandro Del Vecchio, keyboards, and Francesco Jovino, drums, are running to stand still. The result is an accomplished hard rock album that defies fashion.

Lande is on his 10th solo album now, and each recording adds a new layer, building on the past as the future comes down the road toward us at an alarming rate.

Still, this new album is no post-modern, heavy rock freakout full of sonic improvisation – it still sounds like Lande. He keeps a tight rein on everything, though on on some of the more minor compositions – like ‘In the Dirt’’ and ‘Black Nightshade’ – you may have some doubts. Both have sturdy, steel spined choruses, but in each case the journey through the preceding verse and bridge is not so memorable.

The title track ‘Over The Horizon Radar’ and ‘My Rock’n'Roll’ are stamped out from Snakes’ shaped templates. Arguably ‘One Man War’ belongs in that group, but is differentiated by Lande’s lyrics. Much more Dio’s storytelling than Coverdale’s cliches.

There are times you could perhaps argue – ‘Black Phoenix’ and ‘The Winds of Home’ – that the dynamic of Lande’s vocal is undercut by the propulsion of Moren’s guitar. Closer examination again confirm it’s just a match of outstanding talents, each feeding into the other.

In fact it’s an album that mixes the immediate -’Special Edition’, ‘Believer’ – with, to use an old fashioned term, growers – songs that repay repeated listening. The rerecording of Lande’s failed Eurovision entry ‘Faith Bloody Faith’ to close the album, is the perfect definition. ****

Album review: HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE – The Confidence Trick

HATS OFF GENTLEMEN IT’S ADEQUATE - The Confidence Trick

Bandcamp [Release date 29.07.22]

Here at GRTR! we are big fans of Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate, enjoying what the band use to describe themselves as genre defying music. They have a prog rock basis but then wander off down many musical roads including electronica, classical, alt rock and more.

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate are Malcolm Galloway and Mark Gatland with Kathryn Thomas on flute. All three contributed to songwriting on the album. The album’s overall theme is one of cognitive errors, particularly overconfidence, and our repeated failure to learn from history.

One of the longest tracks on the album ‘Refuge’ is an instrumental inspired by Malcolm’s great-grandmother’s experiences of being hunted by the Nazis. As the band’s website sagely notes “the language that was used to dehumanise populations before the Second World War is still used to dehumanise people today. We keep saying never again, and we keep making the same mistakes.”

They seem to excel at these long instrumental pieces that get a story or theme over with the same effect as a vocal track. The music ebbs and flows, from uplifting piano and string sections, through to darker, bleaker passages, this piece of music is superb and one for headphones. ‘Ark’ of their last album is another fine example of the band’s epic historically based instrumentals.

‘Perky Pat’ and ‘World War Terminus’ are inspired by SF writer Philip K Dick novels. The electronica instrumental ‘Perky Pat’ refers to a doll with a glamorous but fictional lifestyle used to distract from reality, whilst ‘World War Terminus’ was another “war to end all wars”. The latter features sublime guitar chords and riffs – shades of Pink Floyd at times.

The title track is another that delves into Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree territory. The mid-section is particularly sublime on the listener’s ears. ‘Lava Lamprey’ is an odd one missing stop/start jazz beats and piano but it still fits well into the album’s overall style and feel. Heck, they even have a bit of electro pop on ‘All Empires Fall’ backing the main spoken word part of the song.

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate are one of progressive music’s best bands you have most likely never heard. Rectify that if that is the case as ‘The Confidence Trick’ is their finest musical offering to date. ****

Album review: BUBBLEROCK IS HERE TO STAY VOLUME 2 (3 CD set)

Grapefruit/Cherry Red [Release date : 17.06.22]

To give this 3 CD Boxset its full title:
Bubblerock Is Here To Stay: Volume 2: The British Pop Explosion, 1970-73.

In the world of sixties and seventies pop, the single was the king. And what the original Bubblerock compilation (2020) told us has been reinforced by Bubblerock Vol 2… that the era had something for everyone.

The pop music of that time was classless. It cut across all ethnic groups, all economic groups and indeed, all social groups. Unlike today where the majority of UK pop musicians are privately educated. But that’s a whole other story.

So much of the era’s rich pop heritage exists below the surface, or behind the band names and the 79 hits that make up this 3 CD set. There just isn’t enough room here to address them all.

Some artists were “one hit wonders” … their hit song was the end as well as the beginning.
For others it was their initial step on a long journey. We’ll focus on a few of them first.

1964, and Wolverhampton boys, Slade, were starting to get it together. Like Andrew Loog Oldham did with Jagger and Richards, manager Chas Chandler, ex of the Animals, started by locking Holder and Lea in a room. You don’t get out until you’ve written a decent song.

And so, they did. ‘Coz I Love You’ – second single and first Holder/Lea collaboration became the first of their six UK number one hits. The band have gone on to sell 50 million albums worldwide.

The Sweet’s partnership with the Chinn Chapman writing team blossomed into a solid string of UK and US hits in the lates sixties and seventies. ‘Alexander Graham Bell’ comes from their 1971/ 72 purple patch, when they enjoyed seven UK Top Twenty hits, four of them Top Five. Their album sales now top the 35 million mark.

Lesser known names from that era, like Blue Mink, have enough back and front story to fill a book.

Essentially they were Madeleine Bell, a US soul singer decamped to the UK, who provided backing vocals for the Stones, Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker and more. And Roger Cook – a prolific hit writer, who went on to write and produce for Don Williams and Crystal Gayle in Nashville, eventually becoming the only British songwriter to be inducted into The Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame.

The band’s ‘Good Morning Freedom’, a Top Ten hit, was later covered by Albert Hammond and Elton John, and featured in the “Breaking Bad” TV series.

And those are only three of many on this compilation who went on to further prove their quality and durability, carving out best selling careers in the Music biz.

Artists here a-plenty had a huge impact on the singles’ chart of the time, but lacked staying power. Christie, Liverpool Echo, The Big Three, Marmalade, Gilbert O’Sullivan, The Tremeloes, these were all fine artists who had more than a day in the sun, but eventually went out of fashion.

Others came and went quickly, but will still be fondly remembered for brightening up the UK charts (and occasionally the US charts too). Who of that era could forget Lieutenant Pigeon’s ‘Mouldy Old Dough’; The Pipkins’ ‘Gimme Dat Ding’, written by Albert Hammond; Summer Wine’s ‘She Is Still A Mystery’, a Lovin Spoonful cover. And, just for fun, Nemo’s version of the evergreen ‘The Sun Has Got Its Hat On’, a song covered by more artists than we can count. All UK Top Ten singles.

And many many more.

Roll on Bubblerock, Volume 3. *****

Album review: THE BLACK FEATHERS – Angel Dust & Cyanide

THE BLACK FEATHERS – Angel Dust & Cyanide

www.theblackfeathers.com [Release date 08.07.22]

The Black Feathers, made up of Ray Hughes (vocals, guitars, keys) and Sian Chandler (vocals), have been touring and recording since 2012. The pandemic put a temporary halt on their regular touring, although they have performed at performed at Philadelphia Folk Festival and AmericanaFest. Luckily they are back on tour and this album is released during their current seventh month tour of dates in the UK and US.

The Black Feathers mix things up well on the album, from the pop Americana on opener ‘Lighthouse On Fire’ through to the heartfelt ballad ‘Strangers In The Dark’. It help keeps the album flowing nicely with the country rocking ‘Golden Hour’ made for blasting out of the radio on a summer’s day.

It perhaps on the more heartfelt moments that the duo really hit their peak, as their impassioned vocals work beautifully together on the title track. Or on ‘Barcelona’, a song about wanting to go back to a place in time when things were more innocent.

The Black Feathers also give their own spin to Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’, with vibrant strings and a steady drumbeat, they pull this cover off with aplomb.

Heartfelt Americana meets country doesn’t get much better than this and here’s hoping they reap their justified success based on this album and their relentless touring. ****

Interview: THE NOMADIC

New York based Australian guitarist and singer/songwriter Robert Gaylard a.k.a. lead singer-songwriter in alternative indie band The Nomadic brings a unique perspective and vision when it comes to creating music by fusing alternative rock-tinged blues and electronic pop. The band’s debut album “My Mind Is Racing” is largely inspired by Gaylard’s “Nomadic” life experience to date, and in particular his experience…

Your new album is out called ‘My Mind Is Racing’ – what inspired this title?

It’s really a tribute to everyone everywhere who’s “Mind is Racing”! could be trying to complete a passion project, managing the multiple pressures of modern race, anxiously trying to get through a global pandemic (!) working out what is best for your family, trying to stay afloat etc.

Can you tell us a bit more about the songs on the album – do you have any favourite tracks?

The album has a number of tracks which address the rise in depression, anxiety (Beyond Blue, My Mind is Racing) along with some more wistful, melancholic/nostalgic tracks such as “Waiting”, “Under a Georgia Sky” and “Skaterpark”. Jeannie is about my grandmother who was a very strong and stoic soul who survived so much (WW2 etc) and stayed positive throughout.

“Grand Mistakes” is one of my favourites, it is basically about how conflict can have a traumatic and long lasting effect on a family. It is probably my favourite track. “Walk the Streets” has a bit more of a country rock vibe and is one of the first songs I ever wrote! “Drifting” is a fan favourite and is a shout out to all the Nomadic “drifters” out there!

You’ve worked for the UN – how did that come about and how does it inform your music?

Yes I was lucky enough to do some volunteer work in Africa shortly after university, and that turned into a couple of contracts with the UN- which then turned into a career! I have been fortunate to serve in some interesting missions – Kenya, Somalia, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Palestine. I definitely learnt a lot about myself and the world! And I guess it also gave me some interesting experiences that contributed to my songwriting.

Please tell us a bit about your globetrotting adventures and what they have taught you over the years?

I have been lucky enough to work in Kenya, Somalia, the Sudan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Palestine. I think the thing I learnt most of all is that the average person around the world is very similar! They want a decent job, security, a future for their children etc. so despite the very different cultures I came across – all fascinating in their own ways – there is much more that unites us than divides us.

What artists past and present have influenced you as a band?

I would say Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the 1975, the War on Drugs, Phosphorescent, Coldplay.

Can we expect live shows between now and 2023, and how do you feel about returning to the stage after the pandemic?

Yes we are planning to do a number of shows in UK, US, Europe and Australia, and will also start working on a new album from September onwards which is very exciting! We will be doing some cool new music videos (please subscribe and follow us!) I feel ok about returning to the stage, in a safe way for our fans and ourselves obviously.

Can you inspire us by recommending anything you are currently reading/watching or listening to?

Don’t get me started on “Ozark”! it’s amazing and might lead to some interesting lyrics in upcoming songs!! The Trevor Noah book “Born a Crime” about growing up in Apartheid South Africa is incredible and I would highly recommend it!

Give us three good reasons to keep cheerful in these dark times…

* We have shown how resilient we can be during COVID-19!

* There is so much amazing innovation and development happening around the world every day!

* If we stick together as a species and respect each other and work together – we can overcome any challenge!

THE NOMADIC NEW ALBUM “MY MIND IS RACING” is OUT NOW

Gig review: STEVE VAI – London Palladium, 7 June 2022

STEVE VAI - Manchester Ritz, 5 June 2022

Let’s just start by saying one thing: Steve Vai isn’t of this world. Throughout his long and varied career, the six-stringer has displayed the sort of skills that are beyond the comprehension of most mere mortals.

From his time with Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, Dave Lee Roth and Whitesnake, through to his ever-impressive solo career, the ever searching and morphing Vai has had a spiritual and at times, alien air, his passion for playing something very few equal.

Such a unique talent demands to be seen in a live setting and those who poured into the fabled halls of the London Palladium were a mix of the devotees and the curious, all here to be entertained royally. This was a night to get truly lost in music and Vai was the perfect captain for this cosmic flight.

STEVE VAI - Manchester Ritz, 5 June 2022

Tall, thin and seemingly ageless, a relaxed and happy Vai strode onto the stage and accompanied by Philip Bynoe on bass, drummer Jeremy Colson and keys/guitar player Dave Weiner, launched into a propulsive ‘Avalanche’, the mix of rock and jazz accompanied by some breath-taking fretwork.

Barely pausing for breath, the massive riffs of the heavy duty ‘Giant Balls of Gold’ steamrollered the audience before the laid back Eastern psychedelia of ‘Little Pretty’ and ‘Tender Surrender’, with its bluesy feel brought a soothing balm.

Bynoe and Colson got to have a lot of fun trading licks with the guitarist during the skittering and melodic ‘Lights Are On’ and the duel between Vai and Weiner showed the latter has some mighty chops too.

STEVE VAI - Manchester Ritz, 5 June 2022

A delicious ‘Candle Power’ was a stripped back and freeform delight, Vai finger picking the strings before he gracefully bowed out, leaving Weiner to take his own turn in the spotlight. Closing this section of the show, ‘Building The Church’ was a display of big guns, finger tapping intro onwards and the obvious enjoyment being had onstage was utterly infectious, the band seemingly vibing off the audience as much as they were the music.

Opening the second set with the beautiful and smouldering, yet brilliantly off kilter, ‘Greenish Blues’ was a masterstroke, its slow building charm letting the audience warm slowly again into this latter half.

STEVE VAI - Manchester Ritz, 5 June 2022

Turning things on their head, ‘Bad Horsie’ ramps up the dark drama, its heavy and crawling crunch snaking out from the stage like a wave before ‘I’m Becoming’ turns the Palladium back into a sonic cathedral of contemplation. This was just a warm up though for the soaring majesty of a sublime take on ‘Whispering a Prayer’, Vai’s delicate playing full of soul and the brief section that sounded like something from ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ wonderfully playful.

Following Weiner strapping on a twelve-string acoustic for a sparkling ‘Dyin’ Day’ and a brief but imaginative drum solo from Colson, it was time to end the show with a hat trick of big hitters, starting with the epic scope of ‘Zeus in Chains’.

Cinematic in ambition and delivery, this let the band really cut loose, the swing they brought into it a heady mixture with its big themes and passions. Closing, the brief and elegant overture of ‘Liberty’ heralds the only thing that could have truly finished the set in the form of ‘For the Love of God’, still as jaw droppingly massive as ever, in itself a mini opera that dances with the elegance of Fred Astaire and weaves like Muhammad Ali.

STEVE VAI - Manchester Ritz, 5 June 2022

Finally returning to the stage with the huge power and fiery fretwork of ‘Fire Garden Suite IV – Taurus Bulba’, it was game set and match to Vai, the connection complete between audience and performer. If any had been sitting on the fence prior to the evening, it can be assured that those leaving this most famous of venues were all converts to the cause, no one person left untouched by what they’d seen unfold before them.

With two of his musical heroes, Jeff Beck and Brian May also in the capital recently, the latter’s multi night residency at the O2 ongoing presently, this couldn’t have been a better time to enjoy some of the finest guitarists in the world and Vai has certainly earned his place amongst those greats.

He may be part spiritual being and part alien from another dimension, but Steve Vai is certainly, first and foremost, a man who loves music and never ceases to amaze. Long may his otherworldly star shine.

Album review: MY SOLILOQUY – FU3ION

MY SOLILOQUY – FU3ION

Rare Artist Music [Release date 11.07.22]

Third album from My Soliloquy, which is the brainchild of former Threshold guitarist Pete Morten. On this album he is joined by Threshold’s drummer Johanne James – Morten plays all the other instruments on the album. It is produced by Rob Aubrey (Transatlantic, Big Big Train, Spocks Beard, IQ), with Threshold’s Karl Groom producing the drum recordings.

‘Fu3ion’ is a concept album, based on a trilogy of books (which are revealed in the album’s sleeve notes) and loosely based on universal spiritual truths and concepts.

It is an album that draws you in and reveals more upon each listen, as there is a lot going on both musically and vocally. Hard to believe sometimes when listening to this it is the work of two musicians, especially on the longer songs like ‘Office Of Imaginings’ (which includes a rap section from Johanne James).

‘Interlocutter’ is soothing ballad with some seriously high octave vocals from Pete Morten. This one is followed by ‘The Space Between Us’ which has a real Threshold meets Ayreon feel about it.

The keys/synths on the album are one of the musical highlights it must be said and they feature prominently on this one. ‘Interiorty’ closes the album, A song that has a Geoff Tate era Queensryche feel about it.

The whole packaging looks pretty impressive based on the photos, which is always an important part of any album released in the progressive music field. Oh, and the limited edition includes two bonus songs – ‘Chrysalis’ and ‘F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real)’. ‘Chrysalis’ in particular is well worth a listen.

My Soliloquy deftly switch from prog metal, to a bit of shredding and then some spacey metal a la Star One/Ayreon, often all in one song! Quite possibly their most intense and enjoyable album yet. ***1/2

Album review: CHAOS MAGIC – Emerge

Frontiers [Release date 17.06.22]

Underwhelming Symphonic Metal from Timo Tolkki “discovery”, Caterina Nix.

This new release,Emerge, is a second collaboration between Nix and one of Frontiers’ South American songwriter/producer wunderkind, Nasson. The first, Furyborn, was released in 2019.

Nasson’s production is so in your face that you constantly raise your hands to swat it away. It’s big, It’s loud. It seems maxed out on ideas, and so he fills the gaps with prefabricated moves, and knocks out the thundering bass beats like a symphonic metal morse code, but the message is never clear.

Most tracks here are weighed down by this rinse and repeat approach to the production and arrangements. Shame, as Nix is a versatile vocalist. Her sweet falsetto can do the heavy lifting even in the most macho of metal environments. As she shows us on ‘The Impossible’, rescuing a decent tune and chorus from the grip of a suffocatingly strident production.

Equally, she can deliver a song with a steely conviction and purpose, grabbing onto the the early promise of the classy ballad, ‘Garden Of Winter’ with both hands.

Nasson eventually throws several kitchen sinks worth of overdone arrangements at the song, but this is ably resisted by Nix, treating the narrative – full of sentiment – with an appropriate robustness, giving the song a classic, doom laden quality.

And so it goes throughout the album. Several tracks, like ‘Victims Of Our Heaven’ and ‘Beneath Your Skin’ explore no new territory and aim at no new targets, recycling old ideas. Then ‘Beyond The Silence’ and ‘Days Of Lions’ pop up, confounding our expectations, as Nix’s voice swoops and soars, adding nuance and subtlety in the face of the production’s rumble and thunder. **1/2

Book Review: PINK FLOYD – BBC Radio 1967-1971 (by Ian Priston & Phil Salathe)

PINK FLOYD – BBC Radio 1967-1971

The Bee Smart Book Co. [Publication date: 03.06.22]

Rock band Pink Floyd had their roots in the early 60s, with some changes in personnel and name, before officially forming in the mid 60s. While many will know their Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall album, prog and hard rock classics by anyone’s standard, the band’s sound is rooted in rhythm’n’blues. And after lead guitarist Bob Klose departed in 1965, elevating Syd Barrett to the sole six stringer, psychedelia and pop were de rigueur.

While much has been written about the band (I myself have interviewed drummer Nick Mason about a number of recordings made prior to their 1967 signing to EMI Columbia, including an acetate of the five piece line-up featuring Bob Klose), this if by far the most detailed history of the band’s live recordings for the BBC. To call it meticulous is akin to calling The Alps a bit hilly.

Back then (and to a much lesser extent now), the BBC had various live outlets and they were important in making and breaking a band. The Pink Floyd (with the definitive article, as they were back then) were no exception. Programs like Top Gear and DJs like John Peel were incredibly influential.

The first broadcast was on 3 April 1967, on the Monday Monday program, the two tracks were the debut 45 A&B, being Arnold Layne / Candy And A Current Bun, with the original line-up of Syd Barrett (guitar), Nick Mason (drums), Rick Wright (keyboards) and Roger Waters (bass).

Documentation is detailed, with discussion of the performance, reproduction of press cuttings and running orders, and later photos of tapes (cassettes and reel-to-reel, some from fans who had taped from the radio), transcriptions of interviews / inter song comments and so forth. Hand written notes in the Top Gear broadcast book too. Then there’s the transcription discs (an area of collecting in their own right).

For each session, the line-up, recording and broadcast dates and track details are given and in many cases songs were still under development and may have been broadcast under a different title to what would later appear on record.

The first broadcast of Atom Heart Mother is detailed and documents the referral to a newspaper (the Evening Standard) at the recording with Ron Geesin pointing to it with “You’ll find the title in there”. This is something I personally pinned down after 2 days’ research at the Newspaper Archive in North London, and was credited in Ron Geesin’s book The Flaming Cow (a book referenced a few times here).

The research is good, as, where two views are available, both are presented for the reader to make up their mind. There are also recollections from audience members and sound engineers.

What this book also details is the development in the band’s sound as David Gilmour comes in to replace Syd Barrett; there is a distinct change from the psychedelia and pop to experimental rock and progressive and stadium rock in the four years covered by this wonderful tome. A wonderful story of the musical and personal development of one of Britain’s most successful and most collectable rock bands.

Serious fans and collectors have contributed, some by way of cassettes of the original broadcasts, and at the end of the book there’s note of how all these performances could be collated on a CD set (please take a hint and let that happen), and a chapter on other concert radio broadcasts.

This book is a work of art in its own right, a well written researched written and published labour of love. If you love Pink Floyd and want to dig a little deeper, this is definitely for you. An essential part of the archive. *****

News: Get Ready to ROCK! adds to interview archive via podcasts (June 2022)

Gig review: JOE BONAMASSA – Royal Albert Hall, London, 6 May 2022

In the run-up to its 20th anniversary year Get Ready to ROCK! will be releasing a selection of interviews collected over two decades.  These will be available as podcasts via the usual podcast channels.

Get Ready to ROCK! Managing Editor David Randall commented: “When Get Ready to ROCK! started in late 2002 we developed the podcast idea which became a vehicle for interviews and were made available via the original podcast home “i-Tunes”.  In the early days we supplemented our album reviews with appropriate interviews.”

“When we started our radio station in 2008 the podcasts became less significant as we used the radio medium for interviews and subsequently the Mixcloud platform as an archive. We did use podcasts for non-broadcast “bonus” content and, of course, the podcast format has become more popular in recent years.”

“The radio station allowed us to develop hour long features with music, whereas the podcast format was very much speech based and remains that due to licensing restrictions.”

One development that David has noted over the years is that artists have been more inclined to be less time-restricted.  Before the digital age radio stations and media tended to be allocated a strict time slot, especially for bigger name artists.

He adds: “Our approach has always been to achieve a more in-depth review of an artist’s career in addition to a specific album focus.  Of course this isn’t really achievable with time constraints and with that you tend to get either a series of sound bites or a less durable exchange.”

Joe Lynn Turner - Hard Rock Hell AOR, March 2016

Amongst the many interviews conducted for Get Ready to ROCK! David draws attention to a three part feature based on a 2 hour interview with Joe Lynn Turner (pictured).  “This is an extreme example, but it has been one of our more popular features and Joe evidently realised that we’d done our research so could chat about and play some of those “deep cuts”.  That always seems to impress an artist!”

Get Ready to ROCK! has always championed quality artists who don’t always have mainstream coverage.  In this respect, amongst the archive interviews available in the new podcasts series, there will be artists such as Doogie White (Rainbow/Yngwie Malmsteen), Chris Ousey (Heartland, Snakecharmer) and Jeff Pilson (Dokken, Foreigner).  But the mainstream has not been overlooked and artists such as David Coverdale (Whitesnake), Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Joe Bonamassa have  featured.

David continues: “Whilst many of these interviews are time capsules we hope they will be of wider interest and especially to fans.  For example we spoke to Joe Bonamassa when he had been recently voted ‘Breakthrough Act of 2009′ and at the formation of Black Country Communion.  Since that time, he has gone from strength to strength to become one of the major “new” artists of the millennium.”

Get Ready to ROCK!’s main interview outlet currently is via the Pete Feenstra Feature show on the radio station.

Says David: “Pete has a real knowledge of his subjects, based on nearly 50 years of rock writing and promoting.  He tirelessly provides one interview per week and each feature gives an insight not just to the specific artist but to the music business in general.  Pete is also a great champion of new music.”

“From a technical point of view, Pete’s interviews require very little editing so there is always a natural flow.  This aspect is a testament to both his authoritative approach but not least to his planning and research.”  David believes it is the planning and research that makes for a more interesting and more durable exchange with any artist.

“Some interviews will always be a little bound by the time period in which they were recorded and that may well be acceptable  when discussing a specific piece of work, a wider approach will always repay future listening.  Especially if the album under discussion  becomes less significant in terms of the artist’s output over a period.”

In 2020 and during Lockdown Get Ready to ROCK! revisited many reviews and artists in a special series “2020 Vision”.  The website celebrates its 20th anniversary from October 2022 when it will announce the “GRTR! Hall Of Fame” reflecting those artists who have maintained (or started) their momentum in the millennium; regularly reviewed, interviewed, and championed by the website.

Album review: BLOODY HEELS – Rotten Romance

Frontiers [release date 10.06.22]

Sounding heavier and harder than on their previous albums, it’s clear that Bloody Heels have realised that the confines of a genre only exist for those musicians who lack wit and imagination.

There are few better examples of a band who pushed hard at the boundaries of hard rock than Dokken. And judging by the primal howl and barbed wire axework that intros opening track ‘Dream Killers’, BH at first seem determined to inherit that band’s mantle. Then the song confounds us with AOR-ish chorus, reminiscent of Scotland’s always underrated rock band, Gun.

It’s a clever start.

The band’s rock solid rhythm section, Gunnars Narbus (bass) and Gustav Vannags (drums) drive the music forward in much the energetic, vigorous way that any rhythm section should. Yet there are times when they rein it back, allowing Vatlts Berzins’ throaty vocals and Harold Avotins’ expressive axework to hold a twisting, turning melody up to the light, capturing the quartet’s poised performance.

Just as important perhaps, the band have written a bunch of well crafted songs here, concocting rock’n'roll tales that skilfully combine a raw, emotional urgency with an ascending sparkle. Most notably, title track, ‘Rotten Romance’ and ‘The Velvet‘, both echoing Motley Crue and The LA Guns Rock/metal aesthetic.

There are many stories of twisted relationships and grim realism, which are full of monochrome shading, sinuous hooks and razoring axework. The gritty, menacing, melodic ‘House Of Sinners’, the Neanderthal rock throwback, ’Distant Memory’, and ’Crows Lullaby’, a dark and downbeat tale of love and lust. All reveal songwriting and arrangement skills now truly beginning to blossom.

When you’re on the road through Europe, with talented bands who are reaching for the bigtime, like Inglorious, Painkiller and Manitou, and bands who are already there, like Nightwish, you soak it all up. You learn what works and what doesn’t. ***1/2

Album review: LONERIDER – Sundown

LONERIDER-Sundown

Escape Music (Release Date 20.05.22)

The concept of a quiet life sees alien to peerless singer Steve Overland who must have one of the prolific recording schedules of any artist. Barely two months after releasing ‘Thirteen’ with his main band FM comes a second release from the ‘Lonerider’ project.

The group reunites him with some familiar faces –long-time collaborator in Shadowman, Heartland guitarist Steve Morris and one of the greats in Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke who worked with him in pre-FM band Wildlife, with another prolific musician in Thunder bassist Chris Childs completing the line up.

There have always been two sides to FM- the bright hook filled AOR, and the bluesier, more soulful side that predominated in their early nineties phase. While his other current project Groundbreaker pays homage to the former tendency, Lonerider clearly is designed to give free rein to the latter. It is not just Simon Kirke’s presence, or the fact that Paul Rodgers is the singer’s idol, that gives the whole project an uncanny Bad Company feel with its spacious grooves.

Indeed cheekily first track ‘Fantasyland’ fuses the titles of the opening song on two successive Bad Co albums. It boasts a good chorus hook which I then found myself singing in the bathroom and an excellent guitar solo from Steve Morris who then produces some tasty slide on ‘Cross The Border’.  ‘Undefeatable’ is closer in style to FM but ‘Harder Love’ has a particularly strong Bad Company vibe,  laid back and proceeding at stately speed before bursting into a big chorus.

The twin dangers with the album are blandness and saminess, and there is a distinct dip with ‘When You Got Nothing’ and the slow and dreamy ‘Any Way The Wind Blows’.

‘Yesterday’s News’ has a retro feel dating back even further to the days of Robin Trower – and another great blues rock singer in Jimmy Dewar – and there is plenty more slide guitar from Steve M on the bluesy shuffle of ‘Badlands’ and the out and out rock of ‘Wild River’  and ‘Criminal Mind’.

‘Prayer For The Lonely’ is a grower, lazy and even plodding but the chorus sees Mr Overland at his vocal finest, while the album ends with ‘Devil Road’ with a melodic feel also closer to FM. Fans of the latter band will also be reassured that the singer’s throat clearing ‘yea-eah’s and ‘whoa-ohs’ are still in evidence at the start of any of the songs.

It took me a while to fully warm to it, but this is the excellent laid back, bluesy listening you would expect from artists with this pedigree and one which might fool a few unsuspecting souls that they have stumbled across a Bad Co reunion album. ****

Album review: MICHAEL MONROE – I Live Too Fast To Die Young

Silver Lining Music [Release date: 10.06.22]

Even long time fans will be approaching this release with caution, uncertain if Michael Monroe remains just as provocative and influential as he once was. That whole Punk/ Glam/ Rock schtick wears thin eventually.

It doesn’t take long to realise that his voice can still deliver a rock song with lusty, ragged edged bravado. And that he still has the ability to write memorably melodic tunes, loaded with heavily charged lyrics, full of personal insights and wide ranging social commentary.

All the usual suspects are here, Steve Conte, Karl Rockfist, Rich Jones and Sam Yaffa. What’s great about this band is that nobody feels the need to outdo Monroe. They’re the man’s backing band, no more, no less, widely respected and eminently durable.

Monroe was only 5 years old during the sixties’ social phenomenon that came to be known as ‘The Summer Of Love’. Looking back, he sees things differently now. “you want a revolution, you got to get up off your ass, the counter culture’s fading fast”. That never-too-late observation, plus a a brief stop midway for a slo-mo hymnic salute to their glory days, confirms why Monroe deserves his place as one of today’s finest post-Glamrock musical artists.

The track is a mesmeric album entry point, setting the mood and scene for further life lessons with ‘Young Drunks And Old Alcoholics’, delivered with a welcome blitz of low slung, springloaded guitars.

Two tracks stand out further. Blazing barroom stomp ‘Can’t Stop Falling Apart’ rides an epic wave of glammed up, mid seventies rock’n'roll, with the emphasis on the “roll”. And ‘All Fighter’, a punchy, and indeed punky rock song with a bruising chorus that just edges it over ‘Derelict Palace’, a slim cut slice of gothic rock.

That said, ‘Everybody’s Nobody’ story of a fallen star, told with a tinge of sadness and a dark, wry sense of seen-it-all humour, might just be the one to register a decent sized blip on the radar of today’s popular culture.

Life, old dogs, you know how it goes.  ***1/2

Album review: CATS IN SPACE – Kickstart The Sun

CATS IN SPACE - Kickstart The Sun

Harmony Factory [Release date 29.07.22] www.catsinspace.co.uk

For the past few years, Cats in Space have been one of my favourite ‘new’ bands, offering something very different to the norm. These seasoned musicians have created a lavishly arranged sound inspired by a variety of soft rock acts from the second half of the seventies but with its own unique musical and lyrical character.

I thought their fourth album, and first with new singer Damien Edwards, ‘Atlantis’ was a big step forward from its immediate predecessors and rivalled their debut for impact. However word emerged when they curtailed last autumn’s touring schedule that they were planning something rather special.

‘Kickstart The Sun’ is the result and everything has been thrown at what is their biggest effort yet in terms of scope and ambition. It is a double album, though only just over an hour in length, with a variety of guest artists including pedal steel guitar legend BJ Cole and brass, horns and strings.

Cats In Space Album Launch, 2022

GRTR! attended a special launch event where journalists and VIPs were given an exclusive peak of the album at the Putney Half Moon, apposite as it was there they staged their debut gig in January 2016.

The band’s confidence that even we jaded hacks would be bowled over was not misplaced and subsequent listenings have only confirmed those favourable first impressions.

An introductory taster of the title track with a big harmonised rendition of its ‘turn the light on’ chorus leads into ‘King Of Stars’, a seven minute epic of the type I thought I’d never hear again.

Damien’s vocals soar over some very Styx or Queen-esque harmonies and complete with prominent synths and guitars exploding late on, the overall effect is that it is 1978 all over again with a song that sits alongside Styx and lesser known pomp legends like Zon, Touch and Roadmaster.

Lead off single ‘Poke The Witch’ attracted attention for a tongue in cheek video but this should not be allowed to obscure a very good song more in the usual Cats in Space tradition, complete with wry lyrics, with keys and lush harmonies but also a twin guitar solo from Greg Hart and Dean Howard.

‘Teenage Millionaires’ is heavy by their standards, reminding me of Sweet with a touch of Roger Daltrey in Damien’s edgier than usual  vocals, while ‘Goodbye To The American Dream’ is another with strong Styx  influences musically and lyrically, and with its added horns could have been a missing song from ‘Paradise Theater’.

Then ’1,000,000 Miles’ is the first ballad on show with Damien’s voice soaring expressively over a big, lush arrangement also including the sweetest of guitar solos.

The almost impossible task of following that run of classics falls to a couple of more typically CiS songs: its jangly guitar motif (is that a Rickenbacker?) gives ‘Fifty One Pillow Bed’ something different while there is another twin guitar break, and, driven by the prominent piano of Andy Stewart and some female backing vocals, ‘Charlie’s Ego’ is a typical lyrical tale of a faded seventies star (inspired by a real person, we heard at the playback).

Side 2 begins, as did side 1, with an epic in the title track which over a glorious six minutes builds from a slow opening, with a Boston-esque arrangement and multi-tracked harmonies.

One of the joys of a CiS album is spotting familiar influences, and the intro to ‘A Big Balloon’ which boasts more fine harmonies, albeit more restrained, reminds me of ‘Northern Lights’ by Renaissance.

Though one of the more straight ahead numbers, ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ was ticking a lot of my personal boxes, its stabbing keyboards combining with a riff in a way which reminded me of late seventies Toto and Foreigner,  allied to a big wall of backing vocals and a wah-wah guitar solo.

There is a momentary drop in intensity with the second ballad on the album in ‘Hero’ and the jaunty ‘Last Dance Saloon’ driven by a ‘Rubber Bullets’-like backbeat and an ELO-esque string arrangement. But a third epic closes the album in ‘Bootleg Bandeleros’ where all the album’s influences come together over eight minutes with musical twists and turns that never stay in the same place for long.

The second half in particular boasts Boston-style handclaps leading into the chorus, alongside some of the finest guitar work on the album, before a brief reprise of the title track.

The ambitious production of chief songwriter Greg Hart and Ian Caple does justice to the songs and the overall impression is that the sound is noticeably tougher than previous releases with a greater nod towards the original pomp rock and AOR behemoths from either side of the Atlantic.

That automatically makes me biased, but I am struggling to keep my usual rule of avoiding hyperbole. For me this is not only their finest work to date but is nothing less than a masterpiece. *****

Book review: On track – BADFINGER, WARREN ZEVON, Sessions – ERIC CLAPTON

On track...Badfinger (book)

Sonicbond Publishing [Publication date 29.04.22]

The tomes from Sonicbond Publishing come thick and fast.  The “On track…”series aims to cover all of an artist’s song/album output, condensed into around 150 pages, and relying heavily on secondary sources.

Badfinger were nurtured by the Fab Four (well, Paul McCartney and George Harrison at least) in their early days on the Apple label but were wrought by shady deals and, ultimately, tragedy.  This forms the sad backdrop to any discussion of the band.  Robert Day-Webb tells the story, highlighting the key albums whilst relying heavily on the definitive biography by Dan Matovina.

Only Joey Molland now carries the band’s flame and the book brings the story up to date with recent/related releases.

Live recordings are referred to but there is no reference to filmed material which seems an omission. Day-Webb rightly emphasises the evolving nature of the song ‘Suitcase’ (originally on the album ‘Straight Up’) which morphed into an extended jam track perhaps best seen on the Granada TV show ‘Set Of Six’ recorded in May 1972 but never getting an official release.  YouTube beckons…****

Andrew Wild’s Beatles books are amongst the best in the “On track…” series and he approaches Sessions Eric Clapton with the same due diligence.  (He’s also written about Clapton’s solo work).  It helps that he is a proper collector and has got copies of those sessions he talks about.  Wild doesn’t mention the myth (or otherwise) of a session for the James Bond film franchise in the late 1980s.

This is essential reading for those who wish to tap into Clapton’s parallel career but, as Wild intimates, with 200 plus projects an expensive hobby.  ****

Peter Gallagher covers the 12 studio albums and two live releases for an appraisal of influential American singer-songwriter Warren Zevon.  If like me you only know Zevon’s work via the classic track ‘Sentimental Hygiene’ rather than the albums in general, start here.

Like most authors in this series, Gallagher does an admirable synthesis of the available interviews and publications whilst being honest in his approach:  “free of unfettered fawning  and sycophancy”.  ****

We keep emphasising, but it is worth reiterating, Sonicbond titles don’t have an index. This means that if you want to find out about specific songs/sessions you have heard, and you’re not sure of the time period,  you’ll need to keep turning the pages.  For example if you’ve heard “Sentimental Hygiene” and you want to know (a) what album is it from (b) more about the song.  With these books in front of you, you shouldn’t have to Google it.
