Gig review: SPIERS & BODEN – Oxford Playhouse, Sunday 5 June 2022

First time on stage at the Oxford Playhouse for John Spiers and Jon Boden, and also the first time inside this smart theatre for this reviewer. Playing to a home crowd (Spiers and Boden met in Oxford) is always a tough one, however, they had the crowd on their side from the first song, ‘Butter, Cheese & All’ one of those tunes that is both humorous and can have many a meaning depending on the cleanliness or otherwise of the listener’s mind!

Much of tonight’s set came from last year’s ‘Fallow Ground’ album including ‘Bluey Brink’, the tale of an Australian sheep shearer who was partial to the odd drink. Jon Boden puts so much into this song, and indeed the whole night. Not to be outdone it was amazing how John Spiers knew which melodeon and squeeze box to play out of a range of seven. It was a marvel to watch both of them in full flight on fiddle and melodeon.

‘Hind Horn’ was introduced as a happy ending folk tale as a servant falls in love with the king’s daughter and a tale of magical rings, beggars and happy endings unfolds. The duo’s music really does mesmerize and transport you to a happier place. Same is true of the whaling song which Jon Boden told us was a nice one as it involved whaler’s going on holiday, as opposed to the usual songs about whaling being involving killing them.

After the interval both Spiers & Boden and the audience really hit their stride and my only complaint was it was over so soon. The instrumental pieces ‘Sloe Gin Set’ and ‘Giant’s Waltz/The Ironing Board Hornpipe’ were played at some pace, whist the duos own homages to each of their favourite hills ‘Bailey Hill/Wittenham Clumps’ off the ‘Fallow Ground’ album was another treat for us all.

‘Prickle Eye Bush’ saw the set into its home run and the Spiers & Boden version works well (Led Zeppelin did a version of this song as ‘Gallows Pole’). The second half of their set certainly had a livelier feel about it, possibly as both performers and audience were suitably refreshed?!

Bellowhead’s ‘New York Girls’ provided a raucous and fitting finale to a superb night of music performed by two of folk music’s most talented folk.

They are back in Oxford in November at the New Theatre for a sold out show with the rest of Bellowhead. Before then make sure you get along to one of their shows which are helping keep the spirit of traditional folk music alive and well.

Gig review: TEMPT – The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

One question I ponder occasionally is ‘whatever happened to Tempt’?  Back in the mid 2010s the young New Yorkers received rave reviews in Classic Rock magazine and its AOR offshoot as the future of melodic hard rock. They even received the accolade of being one of the very few new bands to have an album released by reissue specialists Rock Candy.

But as far as I recall they never made it to the UK and nothing was heard of them recently ….until my curiosity was piqued by seeing them in the small print of one of the side stages at Download. In fact a regrouped version of the band, with a new rhythm section, are touring Europe extensively, and opened with a London show at the Black Heart.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

The omens were not good as, expecting there may be a throng of attendees, I turned up soon after the doors to the upstairs music room opened, and no-one was there. Fortunately by set time a respectable if not full crowd were eventually present and ushered forward by the band.

In an unusual but poignant opening, the four piece took to the stage immediately prior to the set to pay tribute to two of their biggest champions in agent Steve Strange and journalist Malcolm Dome, both of whom sadly lost in the last year or so.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

Despite labouring under a predominantly pink lighting set up, as they opened with ‘Hideaway’ and ‘Burn Me Down’ I was making comparisons with early Def Leppard, raw but with an eye for a hook. Indeed this comparison was accentuated as singer Zach Allen in his tousled curls and blue leather jacket bore a passing resemblance to the young Joe Elliott or Rick Allen.

The atmosphere picked up as more people were familiar with the punchy ‘Living Dangerous’ which was released last year, while ‘Camouflage’ was probably my favourite of the night.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

What was distinct – ‘Roses’ being a prime example- was quite how quickly these songs go for the jugular, short and snappy with no lengthy build-ups and the chorus hooks swiftly coming in on the song.  They were aided by crisp and concise guitar solos from Harrison Marcello adding to the eighties feel with a mini-mullet protruding from his neck and jacket sleeves rolled up Miami Vice-style.

Oddly, their debut album ‘Runaway’ was entirely overlooked: instead most of these songs are from a forthcoming album later this year. Unfamiliarity never helps stir up an atmosphere, but was compensated for by an energetic stage performance which the cramped confines of the Black Heart struggled to hold.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

‘Two Ways’ was one of a number where bass player Chris Gooden  added a bottom heavy but funky groove, which was inadvertently pushed even further forward when Harrison suffered a guitar malfunction mid song.

I was very surprised when Zach announced In between ‘Sneakin’ and ‘Golden Tongue’ they were onto their last song as it felt like we had just got started.  Fortunately they came back for a couple more, first a cover of ‘We Will Rock You’- but played in the faster, guitar heavy style that opens ‘Live Killers’-  and then another hooky song of their own in ‘Addicted to Touch’.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

Nevertheless the set adhered to that adage ‘leave the customer wanting more’ as they mingled with fans afterwards, thrilled at the interest shown in them.

It was particularly refreshing to see a young talent from America as the country we naturally associate with the greats of melodic rock seems to have spawned relatively few rising stars in recent years compared to Europe and Scandinavia in particular.

TEMPT- The Black Heart, London, 31 May 2022

Let’s hope that the exposure of this tour, notably their slot on the first day at Download, pays off; and that the release of a new album with the fresh and catchy songs we got a first taste of here means that second time around, Tempt are here to stay.

Album review: FRANKY PEREZ – Crossing The Great Divide

franky perez crossing the great divide

Black Sea Music [Release date 24.06.22]

Singer-songwriter Franky Perez releases his fifth solo album. He has worked and toured with the likes of Slash, Scars On Broadway and Apocalyptica (for whom he is the band’s touring singer).

On this album Perez states that he returns to his roots to tell a story of self-transformation. “Every artist says, ‘This is my greatest album,’ but this truly was probably the best experience that I’ve had making an album, and the most honest,” says Perez.

Many songs were influenced by his cross-country motorcycle ride during lockdown that was filmed and where he met fellow musicians and friends including ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Randy Travis and comedian Bill Burr.

Normally an album that covers so many musical touchpoints would be a hard sell as retailers and reviewers love a genre to place an album in. However, in this age where streaming is dominant you only need a song to gain traction in playlists, on a small screen series, etc. Franky Perez has these types of songs in spades on ‘Crossing The Great Divide’. There is the Latino pop of ‘Illumination’ – prefect for a summer’s day, the classy AOR/West Coast on ‘California 1976’ and a touch of the Roy Orbison soundscapes on ‘What Gives You The Right’. What an impressively crafted song that is.

‘90’s Love Song’ is a bright pop song that even has a touch of the Stone Roses/Manchester 90s sound contained in the funky vibe of the melody. Perez has a wonderfully smooth, melodic vocal that really does grab the listener’s attention. ‘The Great Divide’ is proof of that, a gentle melodic song and he can rock it up a little as the album’s opening song ‘When I Think Of You’. Shades of Peter Gabriel on this one.

An album to savour and enjoy, Franky Perez is right in that this is his greatest album. A personal tour de force (he played most of the instruments on here and produced it) that is one of 2022’s most pleasant musical surprises.  A year end ‘Best Of’ lists contender that’s for sure. ****1/2

Album review: VENUS 5 – Venus 5

Frontiers [Release date: 10.06.22]

The Venus 5 are: -
Karmen (Hellcats) Klinc
Jelena (The Voice finalist, Romania) Milovanovic
Tezzi (Infinite & Divine) Persson
Erina (The Voice finalist, Albania) Seitllari
and the woman with only one name, Herma, of the SNB band.

A disparate group of singers, brought together by the label, definitely not for their looks, we are assured, no way.

The writers, Jake (Amaranthe) E Lundberg, Stephen (Within Temptation) Helleblad and Per Aldeheim, who’s penned material for H.E.A.T. and Def Leppard have written some decent songs, as you might expect. The problems lie elsewhere.

At times it’s a stretch to accept that the 5′s attractive appearance doesn’t take precedence over content, as their voices, individually and collectively, frequently come close to being swamped by Aldo (Secret Sphere/ Sweet Oblivion) Lonobile’s heavily programmed, symphonic pop metal arrangements. As producer and arranger, he mixes a variety of influences, blurring the line between pop and metal, but his objective seems unclear.

Almost without exception, each track is full on, overwhelming metal melting pots of contrasting yet related sounds. It doesn’t always work. Good songs like the catchy ‘I’m A Lioness’ and the operatic ‘Bride With Blackened Eyes’ are suffocated by overdone arrangements.

But on those occasions where Lonobile strikes a perfect equilibrium, it works a treat. ‘The Simulation’s slightly deprogrammed production – still big, still with a tightly packed arrangement – has attitude and edge, mainly thanks to whoever handles the vocals here… a little bit Avril Lavigne, a little bit Gwen Steffani.

And he goes on to show that cutting edge programming can work if you pare it down a little. The infectious pop metal chorus of ‘Monster Under Your Bed’ along with the big, airy, Eurorock sound of ‘Inside’ suggests that if he’s aiming for Amaranthe and Evanescence territory, then at last his aim is true. ***

Album review: DIRTY HONEY – EP/LP

DIRTY HONEY – EP LP

Dirt Records [Release date 20.05.22]

Dirty Honey release this fourteen song album which sees them add 2019’s self-titled EP with their self-titled album released in 2021. It is a timely release to coincide with the band’s summer UK and European tour dates. As vocalist Marc LaBelle says, “It’s an honor to finally bring our music across the Atlantic. I’ve always thought we’d be well-received in the UK and Europe and it just felt right to release both the EP and LP together after having had to wait so long to get there. It really feels like the right time to introduce Europe to our particular brand of Filthy rock n’ roll…”

Joining Marc LaBelle in Dirty Honey are guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian and drummer Corey Coverstone. They have already opened for the likes of Guns ‘N’ Roses, the Who and Alter Bridge in the US, as well as their own sell out headline tour.

Taking the six song EP first, opener ‘When I’m Gone’ was deservedly a big hit in the US, coming across like the Black Crowes meets AC/DC, although Marc LaBelle doesn’t half sound like Tesla’s Jeff Keith at times. ‘Rolling 7s’ shows off their bluesy side with ‘Down The Road’ one for the Skynyrd fans and lovers of quality southern rock. ‘Break You’ has a beast of a bass riff from Justin Smolian, just one part of one the EP’s strongest songs.

Turning to the album we have the groovy ‘California Dreamin’ starting things off nicely. A crowd pleaser in the live arena if ever there was one. ‘The Wire’ again tips their musical hat to AC/DC, with ‘Take My Hand’ having a lovely 70’s rock feel. Dirty Honey would be a great co-headliner with the reactivated the Answer as both have similar musical roots and sound.

They throw the proverbial kitchen sink into the album’s showpiece ballad ‘Another Last Time’. Bit of Hammond here, some gospel over there and an exquisite solo from John Notto. ‘Gypsy’ shakes the old dandruff with an infectious chorus and drums that drives the song home & dry.

Dirty Honey have made a big impression in their homeland and will doubtless be welcomed big time by UK & European rock fans this summer and beyond. Mightily impressive southern blues based rock, although sadly no bonus songs for fans who got into the band ahead of their summer tour. ****

Album review: GODLEY and CREME – Frabjous Days, The Secret World Of, 1967-69

Cherry Red/Grapefruit [Release date: 10.06.22]

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme didn’t know what they were doing. Well, that’s not strictly true. To be accurate : There’s a thrill in not knowing what you’re doing but aiming high anyway and that, I believe, is exactly what’s going on in these recordings. (Kevin Godley).

From small beginnings . . . etc etc

Godley and Creme would go on to form 10cc with Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. But for now they were known as Frabjous and Runcible Spoon, enjoying their baptism in the murky waters of the musicbiz.

It was 1968, they’d been “discovered” by larger than life Impressario/Manager/Producer, Giorgio Gomelsky, the man who played a key role in the careers of the Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds. And it was Gomelsky who signed them, named them and recorded this Frabjous Days’ material.

For lovers of artist specific rock and pop arcana, this collection is a veritable goldmine, featuring many previously unreleased tracks, including two Gouldman songs that never got further than acetate, and the guts of the duo’s debut (but never released) album (to have been on Gomelsky’s Marmalade label).

And for lovers of the duo’s higher profile career as members of prolific hitmakers, 10cc, it will be a revelation.

For all the “not knowing what they’re doing” talk, it’s clear that the duo are natural performers, in their case inspired, as many artists are inspired, by personal experience.

Echoes of the Beatles, Ray Davies and the lesser known Gallagher and Lyle ring through this collection, and just like those artists wrote and sang about the people and places around them, so did Godley and Creme. ‘Best Seaside In The World’ and ‘I’m Beside Myself’ are just two.

And you can hear the slick, oven ready wordplay and the melodic artistry that they would eventually bring to the 10cc table in ‘Cowboys And Indians’ and ‘Take Me Back’, two more of the standout songs from the unreleased material.

There’s more of course. Including three Gouldman penned songs, planned for the debut, most notably ‘Hot Sun’, a song with Yardbirds’ ambitions. And a couple of previously released, vinyl only tracks, pressed in 1968 to promote Blinkers, a famous Manchester nightclub. If that isn’t genuine arcana, we don’t know what is.

The duo went on to have a massive hit single, ‘Neanderthal Man’ in 1970 with Eric Stewart, as Hotlegs. They then became 10cc when Graham Gouldman ultimately joined the trio.

Frabjous Days is a 19 track, digipack release. Bundled with a 28 page booklet that includes rare photos and memorabilia, plus a 6000 word essay.
A little piece of rock’n'roll history. ****

Gig review: THUNDER – Wembley Arena, London – 28th May 2022

Thunder appear to be on a hot creative streak at present. In the time since this tour was originally announced, pre-pandemic, they have released two albums with last year’s ‘All the Right Noises’ followed by a double album to boot in ‘Dopamine’. However, especially with crowds being slow to return, I did query the wisdom of the choice of London venue, not least with it being an all-seater show. Indeed, with part of the hall cordoned off, it was probably at 50% capacity but an arena-sized stage show justified the choice.

The short tour was a triple bill opened by a different band each night which in the capital was the Kris Barras Band, personally some consolation for being unable to attend their recent headline show at the Electric Ballroom. It was one of their most prestigious support slots yet but bassist Kelpie McKenzie seemed rather over excited by the occasion, rushing around the stage like a hyperactive child at the start.

Surprisingly they opened with their traditional set piece closer ‘Hail Mary’ but still got a bit of a sing-along going, though having recently revamped the line up to dispense with keyboards, it was a bit discombobulating to seemingly hear some taped sounds.

The band have the look, moves and occasionally the sound of a metal band but for me are pure melodic rock with Kris’ voice reminding me at various stages of prime-time Jon Bon Jovi or Eric Martin. On ‘Dead Horses’ and ‘Rock n Roll Running Through My Veins’, Kris’s solos were also excellent yet not bluesy in the slightest, making the early days when he was pigeonholed under blues rock seem a long time ago.

‘These Voices’ was Interesting, mixing a modern pop feel with more brutal passages, reminiscent of Shinedown’s approach, and after the Planet Rock playlisted ‘Who Needs Enemies’ a short 30 minute set ended with ‘My Parade’, Kris again conducting the crowd in a singalong to the ‘fall into line and get out of my way’ chorus with impressive confidence.

In speaking of his pride at being asked to support, Kris had mentioned that Thunder and Ugly Kid Joe was the first show he ever attended as a nine year old in Torquay in 1995. Indeed the two have an ever longer touring history as I remember them both being on the bill when I saw Def Leppard at Don Valley Stadium in 1993.

Here the Americans were the meat in another English sandwich. I can never claim to have been a big fan so was encouraged the recognisable ‘Neighbor’ (sic) began the set, while Whitfield Crane at 54 is still rocking the surfer dude look of shorts and turned round baseball cap. He was an excellent frontman, though his exhortations to crowd participation were very literal, almost as if we were playing a game of ‘Simon Says’.

Their songs were a little nondescript though the likes of ‘Devil’s Paradise’ showed an unexpected heaviness, offset by that cover of ‘Cats In The Cradle’.

The audience had remained resolutely seated to this point and I did wonder whether their big song would rouse people off their haunches, but Whitfield pre-empted any awkwardness by asking people to do exactly that before ‘Everything About You’, one of the great snot-nosed teenage anthems to sit alongside those Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister wrote for an earlier generation.

It wasn’t to prove the last song though as they ended with a very authentic – if perhaps unnecessary – cover of ‘Ace of Spades’ and I found myself reflecting that I had enjoyed their 45 minute set a lot more than I expected to.

The tone of Thunder’s show was clear from the outset as they opened with the respective lead off cuts from the last two albums in ‘Last One Out Turn Off The Lights’ and ‘The Western Sky’, both with all the Thunder hallmarks but with a harder edge than they have shown in recent years, before the first oldie in an immaculately constructed as usual ‘Higher Ground’ with solos from Luke Morley and Ben Matthews.

After another impressive newie in ‘One Day We’ll Be Free Again’ with a Who-influenced arrangement and a good chorus, singer Danny Bowes introduced the latter guitarist as the ‘comeback kid’, having beaten cancer twice.  His statement that ‘the song wasn’t written about him but it should have been’ disabused my assumption, but ‘Resurrection Day’ remains one of their finest songs and Danny orchestrated a series of ‘who-oah-oah’s at the song’s climax. The sound was good and it struck me that we unfairly have taken for granted the reliable and unfussy excellence of the band, and in particular Luke and drummer Harry James.

Reviews of the last two albums have commented on their diversity and sure enough, either side of another old crowd pleaser in ‘The Devil Made Me Do It’, ‘Unravelling’ was driven by Luke’s acoustic and had a relatively gentle and sparse arrangement  but ‘Destruction’ was heavier and darker. It was also one of a number of songs to be given an added dimension by a pair of female backing singers.

It was a bold move for some 60% of the set to be making its live debut, with old staples like ‘River Of Pain’ and ‘I Love You More Than Rock’n’Roll’ dropped for the first time in many years. For a band of Thunder’s longevity it comes with huge risks when many in an older audience want to be taken on a trip down memory lane.

Personally I welcomed their desire to focus on the here and now: not only was it a first chance to properly familiarise myself with some new songs, but there have been plenty of opportunities to hear old hits at festivals or obscurities at their Christmas shows and doubtless will be so again.

However, on what he called the ‘oldie but goodie’ ‘Low Life In High Places’, I was thinking special mention must be made of Danny Bowes, at a time when the declining vocal prowess of many of the stars we grew up on – Coverdale, Bon Jovi etc- is a talking point.

Danny always had one of Britain’s classic blues rock voices but watching him was a masterclass- his tone and diction and ability to hit all the original notes exemplary. While still quick witted, the frontman did noticeably cut back on the dad dancing and ‘sing-along a-Danny’ of old, but that was a small price to pay for retaining peak vocal performance.

Old and new continued to sit side by side. ‘Young Man’ also impressed with its lyrical message of simpler times in the band’s youth compared to now, that would have resonated with many in attendance, while ‘Black’ was another experimental number, almost baroque or gothic in feel on a couple of occasions and reminding me of Luke’s days with The Union.

‘Love Walked In’ began relatively slowly but, helped by the expanded line up, it became massively powerful, before another new song ‘Across The Nation’, more straight ahead and up tempo, with prominent barroom-style piano from Sam Tanner, another addition as a full-time keyboard player with Ben concentrating solely on guitar.

The main set ended with the memorable riffs of ‘Backstreet Symphony’ bringing the atmosphere belatedly to the boil. Yet even the encores began with two further new songs- with Luke on acoustic guitar and the opening vocals, ‘Last Orders’ did not wholly convince but the bouncy ‘Dancing In The Sunshine’ had the right stuff to be a regular addition to the live set, before Danny’s big build up led into the party that is ‘Dirty Love’, albeit this time a relatively restrained eight minutes in length.

Such ‘Backstreet Symphony’ material is now over 30 years old and the conventional wisdom is that Thunder have never bettered it. But, given the strength of the new songs and the all-round quality of their performance, the evidence of this gig is that Thunder are now in a golden period in what for other bands might be the autumn of their career.

Album review: HANNAH RARITY – To Have You Near

hannah rarity to have you near

www.hannahrarity.com [Release date 03.06.22]

Three years on from her debut album, ’Neath the Gloaming Star’, Scottish singer songwriter Hannah Rarity releases the follow-up. Hannah won BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2018, along with touring with the likes of Blazin’ Fiddles, RURA and Niteworks.

Joining Hannah on the album are John Lowrie (keys), Scott Mackay (drums, percussion) and James Lindsey (bass, double bass), Innes White (acoustic guitar) plus a string section headed by violinist Seonaid Aitken.

‘I’m Not Going Anywhere’ was penned by Boo Hewerdine (he adds backing vocals too), who is a much in demand songwriter as well as long-time collaborator with Eddi Reader. A song and performance that is simply breathtaking. Not far behind is Hannah’s interpretation of Tom Waits’ ‘Take It With Me’. Less is more on this one with piano and strings giving support to the vocals, but never distracting from them.

The pandemic is covered on ‘My Friend’, a big production number complete with piano, strings, nifty jazz/swing drum beat and a choral backing. Elsewhere, the pop feel of ‘Home’ sits well with the more traditional fare of ‘Scotland Yet’, where she reveals more of her natural accent in her singing to superb effect.

‘To Have You Near’ not only furthers the deserving praise heaped upon Hannah Rarity, but sees her spread her musical wings into pop, blues and jazz, all with pleasing results. One of the finest vocal led albums you’ll hear this year. ****

Album review: GRACE – Hope

Frontiers Music [Release date 10.06.22]

Under the Grace moniker, Hope is an album put together by twenty year music biz veteran, Isra Ramos, and it’s a genre hopping blast.

Ramos has toured to support Europe, Nightwish, The Scorpions, Angra and others over the years. Yet his influences here are almost too many to mention. Queen, Robby Valentine, T-Ride, all come easily to mind, all moved on from their early 2000s personas and melded together in one explosive, 45 minute rocket ride.

We just weren’t expecting this….from the booming beats of Atreyu’s rushing electronic pop rock, to ‘Blind Love’s dizzy mix of electronica and metal, loaded with quasi religious, fairy tale narrative. From the theatrical flourishes of ‘Nowhere Man’s cinematic intro, to ‘Evergarden’s Melodic Metal mash – like Stahlmann staring down Robby Valentine – everywhere you look and listen, there’s an utterly compelling mix of style and sounds.

Some tracks have more of a lasting impact than than others. The symphonic ‘Sinner’ and the jubilant ‘Invincible’ are patchwork quilts of sound, woven around ambitious, if slightly more grounded compositions. These two particularly stick with you long after the curtain falls.

Arguably then, Ramos’s real talent perhaps is the way in which he skillfully stitches these arrangements together, working each fill and frill into the rock and metal fabric that form the basis of the music. Cool stuff. ****

Album review: NICK FLETCHER – The Cloud Of Unknowing

NICK FLETCHER - The Cloud Of Unknowing

Rough Draft Audio [Release date 02.09.22]

Nick Fletcher’s latest album is a departure from the previously reviewed ‘Cycles Of Behaviour’  It gives free rein to his jazz rock tendencies whereas its predecessor added a bit more prog in the mix, perhaps also influenced by his work in the John Hackett Band.

Of course on that previous album, we noted that Nick’s inner Allan Holdsworth was channelled and that’s certainly the case here.  The opener lives up to its title ‘Out Of The Maelstrom’ as intense a piece of jazz rock as you are likely to encounter.  Keys are supplied throughout by Caroline Bonnett who also produced.

The album is a concept of sorts, and the focal piece is the 23 minute ‘Scenes From The Subconscious Mind’ which includes the vocal ‘The Cloud Of Unknowing Part 2′ sung by Stuart Barbour which is reprised in a slightly different form for the end song ‘The Paradox Part 1′.  There is a bit of Jeff Beck in the title track reminding me of ‘Diamond Dust’ (Blow By Blow).

To these ears Fletcher sometimes plays too many notes and doesn’t leave enough space to let the music really breathe.  This is especially important as the support (from Bonnett, Dave Bainbridge, Tim Harries and Russ Wilson) is exemplary.

The only real respite is the piece ‘Arcadia’ where Fletcher displays his other great passion, classical guitar.

My guess is that ‘The Cloud Of Unknowing’ is a home spun recording and compiled from the various musicians remotely.  Whilst this is typical of many offerings these days, and we have to live with it,  an intense piece like ‘Pandemonium’ does reveal sonic shortcomings especially in the drum department.  Maybe the hi-res 24-bit download fares better.

Fans of Nick Fletcher, including I understand the great Steve Hackett, will really appreciate this.   It’s technically proficient in the guitar department and if ‘Cycles Of Behaviour’ was “polite and predictable” Fletcher’s latest excursion is “intense and intriguing”.  ***1/2

Album review: SEVENTH WONDER – The Testament

SEVENTH WONDER - The Testament

Frontiers [Release date: 10.06.22]

Sixth album from Swedish Prog Metal band Seventh Wonder, for whom life began at the turn of the century.

The band is full of virtuoso musicians. Guitarist Johan Liefvendal and bassist, Andreas Blomqvist are the driving force, to the extent that vocalist Tommy Karevik (also with Kamelot) needs to be something very special, and he is.

And with The Testament, we discover that the band have reanimated their AOR genes, adding a bold melodic rock element to the hardbodied, combative Progressive Metal of previous albums.

It begins with the brightly coloured, beautifully contoured metal of ‘The Light’, and the balladic, romantic and very touching ‘I Carry The Blame’. Both songs are densely packed with razoring guitars and sharp edged rhythms, and yet an unbreakable melodic thread runs through both. It sounds like Unruly Child or Harem Scarem or Toto has decided to give us two huge slices of intensely delivered melodic Progrock.

There are clear similarities too with ‘Invincible’. It’s a brief encounter, but an exhilarating one. The song leads us down an always compelling path, as the lightly conflicting elements of Progmetal and AOR again jostle each other for center stage. And again, the collision of two different styles of Rock/metal merge into a surging, satisfying sound, rising and falling as we move through to the finish.

‘Under A Clear Blue Sky’s tight, solid mix of Progmetal complexity, and the pent up emotion of ‘The Red River’, is where all three merge their respective talents most cohesively.

Each song is brimful of heads down, driving guitarwork, sometimes superheated by Karevik’s blowtorch vocals, sometimes softened by head turning melodic moments, spiralling up through the noise like smoke.

This entire album is a delight, and an object lesson in how to do it and get it right. ****

Book review: BRITPOP, BLUR

Britpop – Decades by Peter Richard & Matt Pooler

Britpop – Decades by Peter Richard & Matt Pooler SonicBond Publishing

The 1990’s in the UK in pop terms, and indeed charts, were dominated for the most part by Britpop, which these two authors (themselves in a 90s band) provide a broad and entertaining overview of.

Nice style taking a key album with the usual track by track analysis, but also adding a brief biography of each artist, plus optional extras which often details subsequent re-issues and added bonus material on these releases.

Of course Blur, Oasis, Pulp, the Lightning Seeds, Suede and Ocean Colour Scene feature heavily as they were the major Britpop successes, along with some big at the time but possibly forgotten by many including Menswear, Echobelly and Denim. Great to see My Life Story’s ‘The Golden Mile’ get a mention, a ‘must have’ album for any lover of finely crafted chamber pop.

Written by two authors who obviously love the music of this era and they (almost) convinced me to listen to Pulp again.

Entertaining and informative read, which certainly has me off to track down and listen to some of the albums mentioned in this book.  ***1/2

Blur On Track by Matt Bishop SonicBond Publishing

Blur were one of the biggest artists to emerge out of Britpop and the 1990’s, along with Oasis, with whom the press had a field day drumming up the rivalry between the two bands.

The book covers every album and song by Blur, right up to their last album to date, 2015’s ‘The Magic Whip’. Possibly a missed opportunity to cover the band members various solo and band projects like Gorillaz or the large catalogue of solo work by Graham Coxon.

It does what it says on the tin (cover) and will appeal to the casual fan, as it is a personal take on the band’s songs and music, which many ardent fans may not always agree with!  ***

Album review: CHUCK WRIGHT – Chuck Wright’s Sheltering Sky

On Sunday 5 June, David Randall chatted to Chuck Wright about the new album.

On Sunday 12 June – as part of ‘The Eclectic Mix’ – there was a more in-depth look at Chuck’s career based on the recent interview and tracks from the new album, Quiet Riot, Giuffria and House Of Lords. (See in-line player at the foot of this review).

CHUCK WRIGHT - Chuck Wright's Sheltering Sky

Cleopatra [Release date 20.05.22]

You can be very wrong about an album or, more specifically, an artist.  Chuck Wright, also a respected sessionist, is best known as sometime bass player with metallers Quiet Riot so you might expect his debut solo album to be continuing that musical path.

But no, this album is more prog fusion-y with a super instrumental opener (with Derek Sherinian on keys) which, if nothing else, dispels any preconceptions.  Vocalist Whitney Tai lends her talents to several tracks including the Bjork cover ‘Army Of Me’ whilst guitars are in the capable hands of Lanny Cordola (one time colleague of Wright’s in Giuffria and House Of Lords) amongst others.  Cordola has spent time in war-torn Afghanistan since 2014 teaching children guitar.

‘The Other Side’ features August Young on vocals and is a bit acoustic Led Zep in execution whilst the funky ‘Throwing Stones’ showcases Joe Retta on vocals (Retta was in Steve Priest’s version of The Sweet and with Wright in the band Heaven & Earth).

Whitney Tai is back for two of the album’s highlights, the superb ‘Giving Up The Ghost’ and ‘Time Waits For No One’.  Whilst the use of different vocalists throughout – and indeed aided by stellar “names” musicianship – adds variety, a whole album of Tai and Wright would be interesting.

Jeff Scott Soto comes blustering in on the heavier ‘It Never Fails’ which also features Mr.Big’s Eric Martin and the late Pat Torpey.  To ring the changes ‘Darkness Darkness’ introduces a Celtic vibe (an authentic cover of the Jesse Colin Young song originally performed by The Youngbloods in 1969) and the bluesy ‘Cradle Of The Sun’ has another female, Shelly Bonet, on vocals.

The album is closed by two instrumentals, the excellent ‘Farewell Horizon’ and a more mellow reprise of ‘The Weight Of Silence’.

Wright’s debut is wide ranging in terms of musical palette and it would be interesting whether he continues this approach for a follow-up which I hope materialises.  Especially with Whitney Tai!

Wright has been raising funds for Ukraine and the frontline World Central Kitchen via his jam night residency at Whisky A Go-Go in Hollywood.  Just as admirable as this debut album.  ****1/2

Album review: DEF LEPPARD – Diamond Star Halos

Def Leppard - Diamond Star Halos

UMC {Release date 27.05.22]

Def Leppard are back after a seven year gap (pretty fast by their standards!) since 2015′s self-titled album, which was rather good.

‘Take What You Want’ starts the album off with all the things you love about Def Leppard – instant chorus, big riffs, guitar solos, the Leppard backing choir.

Those after a glam rock stomp-a-long will love ‘Kick’ and ‘Fire It Up’. The latter possibly the song of the album for this reviewer. ‘Gimme A Kiss’ and ‘Unbreakable’ (harks back to ‘Slang’ in sound & style) are further examples of how they still have that magic touch when it comes to penning rockers with a distinctive pop sound to them. Either would be a good addition to their live sets.

‘This Guitar’ is one of two songs to feature Alison Krauss (the poppy ‘Lifeless’ being the other). Lyrically it has been covered by the likes of Bon Jovi and the Hooters, a tale of how a guitar saved a person’s life. Musically it has a gentle, almost country air to it. Bit different for Def Leppard and Alison Krauss again shows why she is a singer in much demand.

Less said about ‘U Rok Mi’ the better, however, one dud in a fifteen song album is impressive.

They throw it all into the big production ballad ‘Goodbye For Good This Time’, complete with a classical guitar solo. Simply stunning on first and each subsequent listen. ‘Open Your Eyes’ is another good ballad on the album, using those distinctive backing vocals to great effect.

Def Leppard do an ELO on ‘Angels (Can’t Help You Now)’, with plenty of strings and piano helping build the song to a suitably grandiose finale.

‘Diamond Star Halos’ continues a strong streak by Def Leppard and will doubtless be regarded in time as one of their best since their 80′s zenith. ****

Album review: BROOKS WILLIAMS & AARON CATLOW – Ready For The Times

BROOKS WILLIAMS & AARON CATLOW – Ready For The Times

Red Guitar Blue Music [Release date 24.06.22]

A chance meeting a few years ago while on tour in The Netherlands led to collaboration of acoustic guitarist Brooks Williams (Boo Hewerdine, Rab Noakes) and violinist Aaron Catlow (Hawes and Catlow, Mad Dog Mcrea, Afro Celt Sound System). When touring plans were temporarily scuppered by the pandemic, the two accepted an offer to create a ‘soundtrack’ devoted to films of the barn owl. The result was ‘Ghost Owl’, which was shortlisted 2021’s Instrumental Album Of The Year by Fatea Awards. On this follow-up they did their own interpretation of other songwriter’s tune, plus a couple of songs penned by Brooks Williams.

Recorded live-in-the-studio with no overdubs, it allows for not only the vocals to be heard loud and clear, but also the fiddle and guitar, which complement each other perfectly throughout the album. An album of varying moods and tempos, as one minute you are enjoying the bluegrass at-a-pace on ‘Love Too Soon’ (penned by Williams), then the fiddle led ‘Snake Oil’, or the swinging blues of ‘CC&O Blues’.

A few good things have emerged out of the pandemic, one of them being the amount of good music being released now. Many, like this one, recorded during the various lockdowns which allowed musicians to focus more on their creative side, with no live music around at the time. Williams & Catlow may sound like an upmarket accountants, yet they are a talented musical duo who amaze the listener with their musical dexterity and enjoyable selection of songs. ***1/2

Album review: BRAVE RIVAL – Life’s Machine

BRAVE RIVAL - Life's Machine

www.braverival.com [Release date 06.05.22]

The debut album from Portsmouth rockers Brave Rival places them in a trajectory from Abba via Heart and Fleetwood Mac to Zeppelin.  This should mean at least that the band will appeal to a wide age range.

With two lady vocalists (Chloe and Lindsey) and a third lady Donna on drums, the band have an immediate USP and they certainly deliver.  Donna and bassist Billy Dedman previously played in the band Albany Down.

Back in 2019 Pete Feenstra wrote: “They have strong songs, a jam band feel (think Tedeschi Trucks) and a Grace Slick vocal influence. We wait with baited breath for their debut album. It can’t come too soon.”

Although they have been championed by the blues community the band should really be filed under classic rock for widest attention.  The bluesy flavour is evident on tracks like ‘Come Down’ and ‘What’s Your Name Again’ but elsewhere the band  rock out.  And I’m sure that much of this material will come over much heavier live.

The two vocalists alternate in the songs which makes for variety and there are several standouts including ‘Heart Attack’,  the catchy ‘Guilty’,  and ‘Secrets’.  At times, with their mix of rhythm and rock, they remind me of prime time Never The Bride.

The female vocals take centre stage so the contribution from guitarist Ed Clarke  is supportive rather than spectacular (only on  ‘Break Me’ does he take an extended solo) and the emphasis throughout is on the song and the melodic hook which is never far away.

If you are playing catch-up check out their earlier live album (which duplicates several tracks here), but one of our Breakthrough Acts of 2019 look set for greater things freed of Covid constraint and hopefully genre typecasting.  ****

Album review: ART GRIFFIN’S SOUND CHASER – The Seven Ages Of Starlight

ART GRIFFIN'S SOUND CHASER - The Seven Ages Of Starlight

Artsounds Music [Release date 08.04.22]

A self-confessed sucker for a bit of jazz rock/fusion, I couldn’t really resist the latest offering from Canadian bassist Art Griffin.

Ably assisted by his band including violinist Victoria Veh and Saga drummer Steve Negus, there are also some heavyweight guests such as Michael Sadler (Saga) on ‘Seventh Wave’ and the last time I heard guitarist Jamie Glaser was on the excellent Lenny White album ‘Streamline’ in 1978.  He’s worked more recently with Jon Anderson and Jean-Luc Ponty, the latter another influence here.

‘Ride To Vahalla’ gets things off to a rattling, bass propelled start whilst ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ comes across as a supercharged Acoustic Alchemy until after the breakdown section when guitarist Kelly Kereliuk lets rip.

‘Total Eclipse’ is a pumping synth based workout with Veh’s violin again to the fore coming across as a hybrid of Jerry ‘Mahavishnu’ Goodman and Ann Marie Calhoun (Steve Vai).

Griffin also supplies all the keys on the album save the odd solo supplied by Sarah Westbrook (‘JLP’) and Frank Wyatt (‘Seventh Wave’).

The extensive use of electric violin colours this album and may grate with some who would prefer increased synth solo or guitar content but it’s all about taste and preference.  And all the tunes have a purpose and an infectious momentum with the only exceptions being two acoustic-based pieces.

One of the standouts is ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ with a great song-based approach punctuated by Griffin’s bass and keyboard fills.

Anyone who has Roger Dean design their logo has confidence.  And this album has that in abundance.  ****

Album review: LIV KRISTINE – Enter My Religion (bonus tracks)

Liv Kristine chatted to David Randall for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio in June 2022.  This hour special includes a track from each of her solo albums.  First broadcast 10 July 2022.

LIV KRISTINE - Enter My Religion (bonus tracks)

Allegro Talent Media [Release date 19.08.22]

There are several female singers associated with significant bands in the symphonic metal/rock genre who have failed to really capture a wider audience outside of the band format.  The one exception might be Tarja.

We’ve had the likes of Anette Olzon (Nightwish) and Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) producing excellent solo work but failing to achieve deserved wider recognition.

For example Olzon’s first solo offering ‘Shine’ (2014) was a musical departure that probably failed to ignite Nightwish followers but should have captured ears more receptive to melodic pop rock.  Subsequently she has returned to more bombastic symphonic metal usually as a collaborative effort.

I would put one time Leaves’ Eyes front lady Liv Kristine in this category.  Excellent with her band (and the earlier Theatre Of Tragedy) but successive solo albums failing to bring a new, bigger audience.  Surely a reassessment is long overdue?

And ‘Enter My Religion’, now expanded with demo and unreleased tracks, affords that opportunity.  It was her second solo album in 2006.  It’s available for the first time on vinyl with a bonus single plus – a sign of the times – there is a cassette version!  I notice, too, that the currently available CD version of this album retails on Amazon for £55 so buyer beware.

Similar to her solo debut ‘Deus Ex Machina’, ‘Enter My Religion’ is best described as pop rock with every song commercially attractive and accessible.

From the upbeat ‘Over The Moon’, ‘All The Time In The World’ and ‘My Revelation’ to the ballads ‘Fake A Smile’ and ‘Blue Emptiness’ it’s all very easy on the ear and highly melodic.  You would be surprised – and perhaps relieved – that there are no cookie monster (beauty and the beast) vocals she pioneered with her previous bands.

I interviewed Liv in 2012 when Leaves’ Eyes were on a three-way bill with Firewind and Eden’s Curse and – as you do – immediately collected some of the band’s back catalogue. This reissue may prompt the uninitiated to do exactly the same with Liv’s solo works.  You won’t be disappointed.  ****

News: CORNBURY FESTIVAL 8-10 July, 2022

To celebrate, the majority of acts on the 2022 bill are returning festival favourites. Joining the heavy weight line up of headliners  James Blunt & The Darkness (Friday), Bryan Adams & The Waterboys (Saturday), Ronan Keating & Jools Holland (Sunday) will be; Mica Paris, Steve Winwood, The Magic Numbers, Altered Images & The Christians with the usual tasty selection of folk, blues & alternative artists such as Alice Russell, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, William The Conqueror, Ferris & Sylvester, Andy Fairweather Lowe, Amy Montgomery, Beans on Toast & many more.

Loved by locals, Cornbury is one of the longest running festivals in the heart of Oxfordshire, attracting 20,000 people each year for the last 17 years, retaining the friendly community atmosphere of a village fete, that just happens to have some of the biggest International names in music performing on the main stage. Known to be one of the safest festivals in the UK, with entertainment for all the family, its musical heritage is one of all round appeal, suited to all ages and tastes, which is what has given the festival its loyal and long standing reputation in its beautiful Cotswolds setting.

Starting in 2004 at Cornbury Park and moving to Great Tew in 2011, Cornbury has produced a host of amazing headliners including; Amy Winehouse, Joe Cocker, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Paul Simon, The Faces, Ray Davies and many, many more.

Hugh Phillimore, the festivals Independent promoter has this to say on the festivals final event “2017 had been intended as our last festival, but our customers encouraged us to continue, so we did! However, having to postpone the festival in both 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic has taken it’s toll and we have had to move on. We couldn’t leave without one last farewell, so, there will be fireworks, there will be feasts and there will be tears before bedtime, but we intend to make this year one hell of a party as we plan to go out with a bang!”

Cornbury Music Festival runs from 8-10 July at Great Tew Park, near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire

Interviews with a few of the artists appearing at this year’s festival

Garry Christian of The Christians, who appear on the Sunday…

Have you played Cornbury festival before? Do you keep to the hits/well known songs for a festival set or do you like to throw in the odd curveball?

No but we can’t wait. We’ll sing all the well known songs and curveball … probably throw in Here Comes the Sun.

What do you like about playing a festival like Cornbury?

It’s a great vibe like an early Glastonbury – a festival you feel proud to have on your list of bookings.

At a festival do you get chance to watch other acts, specifically up & coming ones?

I loved watching Boomtown Rats and Hall & Oates at Rewind the other year … They both sounded incredible and were so understated and relaxed backstage.

The Christians are supporting Belinda Carlise next Feb/Mar. Have you played live with her before?

No but I loved her song ‘Leave A Light On For Me’ … Shes sounding and looking amazing – should be fun …looking forward to some backstage moments.

I first saw the Christians supporting Fleetwood Mac at Man City’s ground (in 1988 I think it was?). Of all the artists you’ve have shared a stage with through the years who did you enjoy the most?

James Brown – I grew up listening to him. He said to me when we met ‘you’re f**king good man’. So I said ‘thanks James – I think you’re pretty good too’.

He basically created the whole FUNK scene – this word is so inappropriately overused but really what a legend – mesmeric mover – superb singer.

Having been at your excellent gig in Reading earlier this year your voice is still in fine form. How have you kept your voice in such good shape?

Thank you very much. I don’t really do anything – the odd Jack Daniels and vocalzone helps.

Can we expect any new music from the Christians at some point?

We’ve been working some really great new songs .. we don’t have a label at the moment but we’re working on it. It’s pointless releasing beautiful songs unless you have the kind of promo machine that can cut through to the public.

Liverpool to win the Champions League final?

Written in the stars – of course we’re going to win.

Message for your fans…

We really appreciate you …. Keep coming to see us ….. oh and bring your friends.

Gig review: BRYAN ADAMS – Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

Of all those gigs I’d already booked when the pandemic started, it was the trio of Bryan Adams shows at the Royal Albert Hall, playing an album in its entirety each night, that I’d most looked forward to seeing and most feared would not take place.

Indeed when a more extensive arena tour was announced in support of his new album, I suspected they might be superseded, but fortunately the Canadian honoured them, immediately preceding that tour.

Of course ‘Reckless’ would be the obvious choice to play a classic album in full, but rather than take that easy route, which was covered when the album got the 30th anniversary treatment in 2014, instead we got the three very contrasting albums either side of it. Those were the days when, in my view, he was at his artistic peak, so while normally I might cast the ‘fanboy’ aspersion on  people attending multiple shows on a tour, this was a unique must see.

NIGHT 1- ‘Cuts Like a Knife’

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

The first night (and only one for which I had a standing ticket) featured ‘Cuts Like A Knife’, the 1983 album that established him as a major force, at least in the USA: in the UK it passed by unnoticed at the time, but then had a high-profile re-release in the wake of ‘Reckless’.

As was to be the form each night, the band came on stage in low key fashion, dressed in black t-shirts rather than the suits they have sported on recent tours, and there was no stage show as such, just the band bathed in plain light, allowing the music to speak for itself other than a few reminiscences from Bryan about writing or recording particular songs.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

I did wonder about his ability to cope with material that was much rawer in those days but the ever youthful 62 year old’s voice sounded extremely fresh and able to hit the notes. The thought occurred to me that the album’s first side is just as good as ‘Reckless’, as they opened with ‘The Only One’ and ‘Take Me Back’, in which the guitars had a Stones-esque raunch. The atmosphere was already crackling at the front, Bryan remarking how much a standing front area  made a difference, with ‘This Time’ bringing it to the boil.

However he then departed from the running order to save up the two big hit songs: instead ‘I’m Ready’ in its original electric fashion was followed by some forgotten gems rarely, if ever, played live including ‘What’s it Gonna Be’, featuring a mid-section bridge with powerchords that suggested a prototype for ‘Summer of 69’ and the punchy ‘Don’t Leave Me Lonely’, a prime example of early eighties Canadian new wave-influenced AOR that in those days put him alongside the likes of Honeymoon Suite and Loverboy.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

The pace dropped a tad with ‘Let Him Know’ with some doo-wop style vocals like REO Speedwagon’s ‘In Your Letter’ and the poignant story of ‘The Best Was Yet To Come’. Finally came the moment people were waiting for in the title track as they chanted along to the ‘na-na-nas’ and the band turning to face Pat Steward, another Adams collaborator from the eighties making a welcome return to the drum kit and playing with a muscular force. The band took their leave for Bryan to play ‘Straight From The Heart’ alone, troubadour style just with acoustic guitar and harmonica.

The format of this residency was for the band to take a 25 minute or so break during which an inflatable of the car on the current ‘So Happy It Hurts’ album cover floated overhead, before returning for essentially a condensed version of the main tour, mixing hits and new songs though without the audience requests that now pepper his shows.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

After that rather naff John Cleese intro the band then made a big entrance bathed in red light for ‘Kick Ass’, far from former glories but a reminder that he hasn’t entirely lost the ability to rock out, before, helped by Bryan and guitarist Keith Scott going over to additional mikes on each side of the stage to work up the crowd, ‘Can’t Stop This Thing We Started’ got people in their seats onto their feet, where they stayed for most of the night.

It was proof of the strength of his material that he could slip in ‘Run To You’ so early in the set and it seemed somehow rejuvenated with the most convincing delivery in a long time. Less palatable for me was ‘Shine A Light’, bearing all of the modern pop hallmarks of its co-writer Ed Sheeran but the way the crowd’s phone lights acted out the chorus created quite an atmosphere.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

Gary Breit’s piano intro to ‘Heaven’ brought up a huge cheer –the crowd then took over most of the first verse,  but again the version seemed to have greater power and depth than on recent occasions I have seen it live.

‘Go Down Rocking’ was fun though I was working out quite how many songs it drew from- ‘Glad All Over’, ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ and ‘Angel Of Harlem’ to name but three- but after his usual anecdote and teasing about Tina Turner’s possible appearance,  ‘Its Only Love’ was one of the heaviest of the night – Bryan attacking all the vocal parts with an aggression only matched by Keith with his extended solo, as he pulled shapes and generated feedback-strewn histrionics from a Stratocaster Rory Gallagher would have rejected as being too battered.

The garage rock feel of new song ‘On The Road’ went down well with a sway along section and though not all of the set was that rocky, I enjoyed the guilty pleasure of the 50’s-inspired danceable grooves of ‘You Belong to Me’, while ‘Here I Am’ featured just Bryan accompanied by some superb piano playing from Gary and was unexpectedly good.

Another surprise was to hear him sing ‘When You’re Gone’ solo and acoustic, but the way the crowd joined in led it an intimacy before the inevitable cheers to ‘Everything I Do (I Do It For You)’ during which every single person seemed to have their camera phones out.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

Though I missed some mainstays like ‘Somebody’, I surprised myself quite how much I enjoyed ‘Back To You’, seemingly now an Adams anthem with Keith’s slide and Gary’s piano playing feeding off each other and the crowd clapping along as the band synchronised their movements in front of the stage.

There was a surprise when he dropped in ‘Rebel’ as a taster for the next day’s feature while ‘Summer Of 69’ saw a great atmosphere as fans and band rocked out culminating in Keith and Bryan making a leap in unison which stopped just short of launching themselves into the front row.

The first encore of the title track of ‘So Happy It Hurts’ proved it can be safely added to the list of live favourites, and ‘These Are The Moments That Make Up My Life’ with a U2-ish backing and personal lyrics was a slow burner but an impressive one – though of course I was to get three goes at listening to it! Again the band departed, leaving Bryan to speak of his pride in playing the Albert Hall and close out the show in traditional solo acoustic fashion with ‘All for Love’, and the good news for me was I had two more nights of this to experience.

NIGHT 2- ‘Into The Fire’

24 hours later, the clock was wound forward from 1983 to 1987, an eventful four years in which ‘Reckless’ had made the rugged young Canadian a world star. Yet he made no attempt to repeat the same formula, instead releasing a more mature, darker, and as one of my friends perfectly described it, sombre follow up in ‘Into The Fire’.  If you like, it was to ‘Reckless’ as ‘Tunnel of Love’ is to ‘Born In The USA’, but sold a fraction of its predecessor.

There are at least a couple of experts who I normally defer to who name it as their favourite Bryan Adams album. I can’t share that view but given that very little has been played off it on subsequent tours, I awaited revisiting it with interest, and it received a respectful rather than rapturous reception.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

They tweaked the order in opening with the title track before the first single ‘Heat Of The Night’, the latter with that rarity, Bryan taking the guitar solos. Both were notably slower and less hooky, though there was much to admire in the musicianship and certainly they were the songs on which bassist Sol Walker was most prominent of all three nights.

‘Victim of Love’ took a while to come to the boil before some great guitar work from Keith and ‘Another Day’ was rather lightweight, but a song I had found rather dreary on record in ‘Native Son’ truly came to life with the sweetest of solos from the underrated guitarist.

I always preferred side 2 of the album and sure enough ‘Only The Strong Survive’, with some aggressive slide work from Keith reminded me of the memorable occasion when he led off with it at a sweat soaked exclusive gig at the Marquee back in 1987.

On the aforementioned ‘Rebel’ Bryan  spat out the lyrical tale of disaffected young men returning from war in a manner which suggested this was an appropriate tune for Roger Daltrey to have covered a couple of years previous. The equally thoughtful lyrical anti-war content of ‘Remembrance Day’ came out strongly in a live environment with sympathetic musicianship including military-style drumming from Pat.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

It was interesting to hear that ‘Hearts On Fire’ was an unfinished song from the Reckless era as its bright hooks stood out like a sore thumb, and that the underrated and rarely played ‘Home Again’ was written about his life as a diplomat’s son. So the verdict – an interesting listen which brought out the full subtleties and complexity of a worthy album, but one which will never be a crowd pleaser. One for the connoisseur I would venture.

The second set followed the first night closely other than ‘Cuts Like Knife’ replacing ‘Rebel’, though delivered differently with Bryan playing the first verse acoustically by himself , and ‘All for Love’ was surprisingly dropped.

NIGHT 3- ‘Waking Up The Neighbours’

The final night saw us move forward another four years, by which time Bryan had swapped Jim Vallance for Mutt Lange as his main collaborator and with the latter’s perfectionist ear made an unashamedly commercial, brash and feel good rock record – indeed I like to jibe that it is ‘Hysteria’ with better vocals.  Helped by THAT single, it was also the album that turned him from an arena act to a stadium sized act for some years, but he never rocked out again with such consistency.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

On the plus side this was going to be a more uptempo and higher energy night, which they must have known as this time a film crew was present. On the other hand, as a good half hour longer than ‘Into The Fire’ and twice the length of ‘Cuts Like A Knife’, set timing was always going to be a challenge.  Possibly for this reason, some of the songs were shortened slightly with the odd verse or instrumental bridge dropped (as chronicled in retentive detail by a contributor to setlist.fm should you feel the need to check!)

The other difference as they opened with the big, fun choruses of ‘Is Your Mama Gonna Miss You’ and ‘Hey Honey I’m Packing You In’ (or was that ‘Hot Legs’?) was that his bandmates were going to be far busier this time replicating those gang backing vocals that characterise the album, warming the atmosphere nicely for ‘Can’t Stop This Thing We Started’.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

‘Thought I’d Died And Gone To Heaven’ was exquisite with its Foreigner-esque verse and big layered Def Leppard-like chorus. Though ‘Not Guilty’ and ‘Vanishing’ were not at the same level, I was dying to leap out of my seat and rock out to ‘House Arrest’ which I remember being the perfect opener when the original tour hit Wembley Stadium in 1992. In its contrasting way, the ballad ‘Do I Have to Say The Words’ was equally brilliant, beautifully arranged with a wonderfully emotional solo from Keith, whose night this was.

Another out and out rocker in ‘There Will Never Be Another Tonight’ (the nonsense lyric ‘gonna ride my broom right into your room’ never fails to raise a chuckle) brought even many in the seated area, your correspondent included, to their feet and stayed there for ‘All I Want Is You’, perhaps the song where the Mutt/Lep-isms were most blatant. They were also present on the mid tempo ‘Depend on Me ‘while by the time of  ‘If You Wanna Leave Me’ with some nice slide guitar work, I was conscious that the running order seemed to be changing slightly.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

The final cut on the album ‘Don’t Drop That Bomb On Me’ I had always found throwaway and yet this rendition really brought the song (an eco anthem before its time) alive and revealed new layers as Keith and Pat attacked its closing section vigorously.

However ‘Everything I Do….’ had to be left to last, though Bryan gave it a typically casual and low-key introduction.  I will admit it is my least favourite of the three ballads on the album, yet this seemed easily the best version of the residency with a beautiful solo from Keith.

However in the interval the completist in me was grumpy at realising we hadn’t actually heard all the album and one song had been omitted. Fortunately four songs in to the second set Bryan turned to Keith spontaneously and – in the stead of ‘Go Down Rocking’- they began cranking out the riffs to ‘Touch The Hand’ and this time the Lange comparison was with his trio of AC/DC albums as Bryan and Keith swung their guitars to an admittedly truncated version.  The rest of the set closely followed the previous night except ‘Rebel’ was unexpectedly swapped back in at the expense of the more obvious ‘Cuts Like A Knife’.

BRYAN ADAMS- Royal Albert Hall, London, 9-11 May 2022

Never mind a ‘One Night Love Affair’, overall it was a memorable three night stand. Whether inspired by the surroundings of this august yet intimate venue, the sense of occasion or merely revisiting the songs from a younger and rawer period, Bryan Adams really rediscovered his mojo.

After giving an impression of coasting on more recent shows, this residency proved that, when the mood takes him and supported by an excellent band, the kid really does still wanna rock. It was a set of shows to reawaken my interest and remind me just what an impact his best work had on my younger life.

Album review: RAVEN – Rock Until You Drop (the 4CD Over The Top Edition)

Cherry Red/Sanctuary [release date : 27.05.22]

Raven, the legendary heavy metal band from England’s industrial North East, have the perfect resume. They have recorded for six different labels (and never been without one) including major and major-ish imprints like Atlantic, Megaforce and SPV, and have released over twenty albums since their inception in 1974. The numbers tell their own story.

The band was formed by brothers Mark and John Gallagher in Newcastle, in the early seventies, just about the time the UK was reeling from the Miners’ Strike, the 3 Day week, The Troubles in Northern Ireland and other elements of social disorder. The band’s music reflected that turmoil, as did many others, joining together under the NWOBHM banner, delivering Heavy, Proto Thrash Metal to all who would listen.

The band’s near legendary 1981 album Rock Until You Drop – as close as you’ll get to the live experience in the studio – is the lead CD of this 4 CD package. It’s a nine track album opened by calling cards, ‘Hard Ride’ and ‘Hell Patrol’, and is expanded by the addition of 6 bonus tracks. The highlights of those being culled from two NWOBHM compilations. ‘Let It Rip’ from Brute Force (1982), and ‘Inquisitor’, from ‘Lead Weight’ (1981).

An almost total lack of radio airplay led labels and bands, across a wide spectrum of “below the headlines” rock and metal to issue these “sampler/ compilation albums”. It was often the only way fans could get to hear new bands at a reasonable price.

Rock Until You Drop found many advocates among the UK Metal Media. In turn that led to support gigs with Motorhead, Metallica and Megadeath. The band was on the rise.

CD2 comprises a dozen demo tracks from Neat Records in 1978. A must for metal afficionados in general and Raven fans in particular. Some of these went no further. Others, like ‘Don’t Need Your Money’ made it onto the debut, and a few made it as bonus tracks on later album reissues.
Taken in context, they are reminders of the band’s musical roots, but they also serve to remind us how quickly the band developed their own, relatively unique sound, as they moved into the next decade. A real bonus CD.

CDs 3 & 4 : Just listen to the high energy dynamics here. These tracks (26 in all) come from a bootleg recording made at the band’s Sasso Marconi Stadium gig in Bologna (beautiful city) in 1982. A fan in the audience had a quality tape machine and recorded the entire concert.
Majority of the tracks, understandably come from Rock Until… with a trio plucked from the band’s just released second album, Wiped Out.
And arguably, those two albums saw Raven at their fiercest and most undiluted:
Live, the ferocity of John Gallagher’s primal howl, and the eruptions of sonic turbulence that punctuate brother Mark’s fiery riffs are fine substitutes for hi fidelity. Perfectly imperfect.

A handful of the same songs, recorded at the Manchester Apollo gig earlier that year are included on this CD. You can hear the band rehearsing and refining (if that’s the right word) the huge sound that was about to lay waste to the Sasso Marconi stadium a few months later.

The package includes a most informative essay by John Tucker, highly regarded NWOBHM authority, and a de rigeur booklet of rare and previously unpublished photos.

Gig review: MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE – Stadium MK, Milton Keynes, Saturday 21 May 2022

So, my daughter aged 14 likes My Chemical Romance (MCR) and I wanted to introduce her to the sort of things the world has to offer. I managed to get tickets to Stadium MK to see MCR and support on Saturday night. This is how it was for a non-fan and novice gig reviewer…

The venue was drenched in warm afternoon sunshine as we arrived. It made me think that for whatever its faults, this newly named city really does have a lot to offer just in general ‘stuff to do’ and a decent enough cultural offering. Parking is a pain for the venue, but that’s true of most places but hey ‘get the bus’.

Anyway, we got drinks, took our seats basked in the sunshine, and the concept of what was about to unfold was opening my daughters’ eyes to what sort of things the world has to offer, ‘WOW’ as she eloquently put it.

The setting looked great in the sun, it’s a nice stadium, the stage and whole set up was pretty impressive.

It was about half full when the first act came on in the sunshine….

The support bands were Charlotte Sands, Barns Courtney and the main support coming from Placebo. They all offered up something different.

Charlotte Sands had great command of the stage and real presence. She established a rapport with the fans with complete ease. When she opened, I felt I was on a journey with Blondie initially that then moved quickly into the Sugar Cubes and then went off again somewhere completely different. We will be seeing a lot of this artist.

Barnes Courtney transported us back to a softer metal era with a number of well performed ballad type songs with a distinct blues vibe with often upbeat tones. It was a fun performance and offered up something a bit different.

Placebo played for an hour and did not disappoint. They began to suffer towards the end of their set as the crowd were eagerly awaiting the main act which ultimately was the reason they were there. The set was rounded off with The Bitter End and Infra Red. The ever-present subtle angst in their music shone brightly. Masters of their craft, well worth catching if you can.

The venue, I suspect, was bordering on a sell out. It seemed full to me ready for when MCR took the stage. The energy ‘in the room’ was escalating with the excitement of what was about to happen. The full impact of the lighting in the fading light was set to really impress. It did not disappoint.

I got the distinct impression that My Chemical Romance are a really important band to a lot of their fans. I’ve seen comments like they ‘gave me an identity’ they ‘saved me’ etc etc. It reminded me a bit of a Smiths documentary I saw once. i.e., a band finally existed for a generation where some/many are disenfranchised for whatever reason, and a lot of people find themselves on their own – and yes you are on your own, but there ain’t half a lot of you. I felt this here, thankfully MCR speak both for and too some of those (I’m sure you know who you are).

He said, Son, when you grow up, would you be the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned?”

MCR came out and played roughly a 1 hour 50 minutes set which was high energy and well delivered. The 21-song set list started with The Foundations Of Decay and I’m Not Ok and ending in Welcome To The Black Parade and Sleep with an encore of Boy Division and Helena. Teenagers coming mid set with full on audience participation.

It was clear what some of these songs meant to the audience. As a non-fan I could feel the obvious emotion and power of the Welcome To The Black Parade song thrashed out with real precision and mastery for a live performance.

The City scape set akin to a batman set gave an edgy dark vibe with big hitting sound and lighting effects giving the whole package a real impact, this hit home and you felt it. They really did turn up and they played as if it was their first or last performance.

There was clearly a lot of love for the fans emanating from the band through Gerard Way. They wanted to be there, and man did they turn up! They looked after the crowd and kept fans safe (as much as you can), giving we are all ‘here to party together’ sentiment and lets ‘look after each other’ vibe, getting the crowd to take 3 steps back a few times during the performance. This was a band that gave the impression that they cared.

Gerard took some time to talk about the tour and absent friends and making reference to Riley Gale (Power Trip) whose passing had clearly touched the band. Gerard held the audience in his palm with ease and it felt like there was a real connection.

This was a great occasion, emotional songs, with emotional lyrics that means so much to so many people. The support acts did their jobs well. The crowd made the atmosphere, and this drew you in, I found as a non-fan I suddenly felt included, and I’d been assimilated.

Gerard was on song and the band are well drilled and gave a powerful emotional performance, it really was first class from the fan’s perspective.

Was it musically 100% perfect? It wouldn’t be unique if it was (and I probably wouldn’t notice either way), but this was unique for a hell of a lot of people. They now have one new ageing fan to add to their masses, and I know a certain 14-year-old who hasn’t stopped playing MCR since Saturday night!

MCR, if you are around again, I’m coming!

Album review: STRANGEWAYS – Complete Recordings Volume 1, 1985-1994

Cherry Red/HNE [Release date: 27.05.22]

The clamour for reissues of the first 3 Strangeways albums rose to fever pitch in the late 90s, as AOR made an attempt to get back on its feet. All 3 had been received with universal acclaim by the UK Music Press on their original release in the mid 80s.

On being interviewed for Hard RoxX (RIP) print mag in 1998, Ian Stewart told me he was unable to establish who owned the rights. The band had signed to the UK’s up and coming Bonaire label, who had released the albums, and then disappeared.

And so the band took the plunge and claimed ownership themselves, reissuing the albums on their own Hangdog Records label, in 1997.

Every day, he said, they expected a “lawyer’s letter” to come shuffling through the letter box, threatening legal action. But none did.

On the debut, the band was Ian Stewart and his brother David, plus Jim Drummond and singer, Tony Liddell. Liddell was ousted in favour of US vocalist, Terry Brock for the subsequent releases.

This month, Cherry Red Records have reissued those 3 albums – Strangeways, Native Sons, Walk Into The Fire, plus And The Horse – and released them as a sturdy, Clydebuilt Boxset.

Bonaire had brought in Kevin (Journey/ Mr Big/ Europe) Elson to produce the 1985 debut – Strangways. It struck a lot of chords in the music press who lauded it bigtime, without it gaining any traction in over the counter sales.

Roxy Music/Slade Producer John Punter was recruited for the follow up, Native Sons (1987). Terry Brock replaced Liddell. Brock’s smoother US tones were considered more “commercially suited” to the music and the market.

There are few AOR/Melodic Rock albums like this one where we can seriously say every track’s a gem – polished, sparkling AOR – with as much depth as you could expect in the 80s. “Without doubt the best AOR album of the last six years”, according to Kerrang. Anywhere you stick a pin in the tracklist you come up with your new favourite. ‘Only A Fool’, ‘Where Do We Go From Here’ and ‘Goodnight LA’ is where many got stuck.

Ian Stewart told me he learned a lot from Elson and Punter, enough to decide he could produce that “big, polished, melodic rock sound” in the studio himself. And he did so categorically on 1989′s Walk Into The Fire, wisely continuing with engineer John Lee and mixing maestro, Mike Shipley.

Arguably, there’s a thin line between the two releases. This third album had a decent quota of great AOR songs, ‘Every Time You Cry’ and ‘Where Are The Now’ are as good as anything being knocked out by Foreigner or Journey at the time. Maybe it just wasn’t quite as consistent.

Walk Into The Fire was the third time they did what they intended to do musically. But instead of becoming million selling artists, ultimately they had to settle for legendary status.

By 1994, Brock was gone. The band released And The Horse, with Ian Stewart on vocals, and again producing. The amusingly philosophical title strongly suggests the band were writing and recording on their own terms now.

It didn’t have the scope or the scale of its predecessors, employing more of a kitchen sink production ethos, and Stewart substituted a bluesier, more progressive sound. He is not a stadium rock vocalist. He keeps a tight rein on the vocal melodies, and his voice has soul and conviction.

The arrangements are looser, more expressive, dreamier, Floydian even. The songs, especially the introspective ‘Some Of Us Lie’, and ‘Precious Time’ hears Stewart still demonstrating his musical artistry, just in a new way.

There is a veritable plethora of bonus tracks (18 in all) across the collection. Out takes, live tracks, single edits, remixes, tracks that just missed the cut and so on. By the time you’ve finished listening to all 59 tracks spread over the 4 CDs, you’ll be the world’s leading expert on Strangeways. *****

Album review: LAZARUS DREAM – Lifeline

LAZARUS DREAM - Lifeline

Pride & Joy Music [Release date 17.06.22]

Second album from Lazarus Dream, which was put together by vocalist Carsten “Lizard” Shulz (Evidence One, Domain, Devoid) and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Markus Pfeffer (Scarlett, Winterland). Drummer Markus Kullmann (Sinner, Glenn Hughes), percussionist Thomas Rieder, and keyboards player Thomas Nitschke all return as guests again, along with percussionist Andy Lübbert and keys player Jorris Guilbaud (Devoid, Heart Line).

‘Dead End Symphony’, which features Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater, Black Country Communion, Sons Of Apollo, Billy Idol) on Hammond, Moog & synths, opens the album in full on hard rock mode. ‘Don’t Look Down’ is a bit standard, however, ‘Mind Like A Windmill’ is a classy hard rock tune. The bass groove on this is immense, whilst the chorus recalls Graham Bonnet and Alcatrazz.

‘Overdose Of Paradise’ has a Deep Purple feel with its driving Hammond riff/solo and the guitar solo from Markus Pfeffer. ‘Love Without A Net’ slows things down a tad, giving a chance to highlight Carsten’s melodious vocals. Mind you, he really belts it out on ‘Save Our Selves’, a song that wouldn’t look out of place on the past couple of MSG albums.

Two bonus songs to be had, with ‘Surrounded By Strangers’ – a catchy melodic rock featuring tasty synths – and their version of Animotion’s 1986 minor hit ‘I Engineer’. The latter keeps the original’s synth sound and adds in some Lazarus Dream guitar clout.

Lazarus Dream’s debut was one of 2020’s most consistent and enjoyable albums, and I am pleased to report ‘Lifeline’ is of a similar high standard. You’ll be hard pressed to find a high quality hard rock release this year like this one. ****
