Gig review: MARTIN TURNER – 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

For the last few years founder Wishbone Ash member Martin Turner and his band have been gradually revisiting a series of the band’s classic seventies albums in their entirety. When touring activity resumed last autumn, they finished off the pre-pandemic ‘Pilgrimage’ tour, so this showcasing of 1973’s ‘Wishbone Four’ had been eagerly anticipated a good couple of years after first being announced.

It’s an album that occupies an unusual place in Wishbone history. At the time it was a critically reviled successor to their landmark ‘Argus’ album which meant they never again attained the same commercial and critical heights. They made a conscious decision to avoid a ‘son of Argus’, instead mining a variety of other musical styles from hard rock to country, but despite a flat production it is highly regarded in hindsight by many Wishbone fans.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

However this was a tour with a difference, as ‘Argus’ marks its 50th anniversary in 2022, so both albums were played in full. I had assumed that ‘Argus’ would form the second set considering it contains the majority of their classics and crowd pleasers but instead it kicked off the evening.

The 100 Club crowd was unexpectedly packed, including a good proportion of overseas fans where I was stood, and the cheering more raucous than I am used to with either of the two acts playing the band’s music.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

Having been played in full on numerous tours over the years, there were never likely to be any surprises. That said, the wonderful light and shade of the album was epitomised by opener ‘Time Was’, Misha Nikolic adding acoustic guitar and Tim Brown’s cymbals and hi-hat work delightfully subtle, before a crashing drum intro to the faster second part. The solos of Danny Willson were outstanding both on that song and also ‘Sometime World’ and ‘The King Will Come’, doing justice to the originals, before Misha belatedly took the spotlight  from his harmony twin on a beautiful ’Leaf And Stream’.

Both shone on ‘Warrior’, despite a brief interruption when the sound came through the wrong monitors, before it segued into its counterpoint ‘Throw Down The Sword’ with that unusual twin guitar climax brilliantly delivered. Then, saved to last as a jaunty song among the more serious compositions of the album, ‘Blowin Free’ made for a lively atmosphere.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

The way Martin’s bass intertwined with Danny’s closing solo on slide was just one of the recurring reminders that his melodic basslines, almost like a third lead instrument, were such a big part of the band’s sound.

Still looking the rock star at 74 in his red western shirt, patterned strides and artfully tousled hair, he introduced the origins of most of the songs and despite having seen him countless times, there were a few new stories or spins on existing ones that suggested that ‘an audience with’ type evening of his stories and anecdotes would be great entertainment.

At times his voice was showing clear signs of wear and tear, but the support of Danny and Tim helped recreate Wishbone’s vocal harmonies, which at their best on the earlier albums were as exquisite as their guitar ones, if less well known.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

After the interval came the moment those who count ourselves Wishbone diehards were more curious to hear with a rendition of ‘Wishbone Four’, beginning with one of the tracks that has seen little live action over the years in ‘So Many Things to Say’, Martin fairly spitting out the vocals (which were allegedly inspired by a riposte to his first wife), equally aggressive slide guitar work from Danny and a surprisingly funky mid-section.

‘Ballad Of The Beacon’ with Martin and Danny sharing the vocals and Misha excelling on guitar was more recognisably Wishbone in its seventies folkiness and kicked off four relatively gentle numbers in a row, including the lengthy ‘Everybody Needs A Friend’, and ‘Sorrel’ (perhaps the only gardening-inspired song in rock other than the Kinks’ ‘Autumn Almanac’?) lifted by some beautiful trademark twin leads. However ‘Sing Out The Song’ has not improved with hindsight despite some tastefully restrained country-ish slide from Danny.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

Tweaking the album order, the best was left to last, starting with the rattling boogie of ‘No Easy Road’ with more twin guitars which I had no idea was a No. 1 in New Orleans; and ‘Rock And Roll Widow’ with Danny both singing and combining with Misha on some brilliantly subtle atmospherics building the tension into his final slide guitar solo.

Finally, after the well worn tale of a faded beauty queen exiled to the young Turner Brothers home of Torquay, ‘Doctor’ saw Martin’s basslines intertwining with the two guitars that fizzed in splendidly aggressive fashion, the harmony twins finally having decided it was safe to allow their leads to trail along the 100 Club’s notoriously wide and narrow stage.

MARTIN TURNER- 100 Club, London, 15 April 2022

I espied a setlist that listed four possible encores, but there were time for only two – a solitary dip into the ‘Mark 2’ Wishbone catalogue as Danny shared vocals with Martin and guitar solos with Misha on ‘You See Red’ and the usual twin guitar boogie of ‘Jailbait’, complete with audience participation, band intros and concluding with Martin’s Essex girl joke that surely every fan has heard too often by now?

It all made for a memorable evening of Wishbone music in the hands of a founder member and his talented colleagues, really showing the benefits of the most stable line-up since Martin returned to live music.  Both an undeniable classic album and an unfairly neglected successor, taken together, were an excellent demonstration of the charms of this underappreciated band.

Gig review: SARI SCHORR – Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

SARI SCHORR- Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

She may be a proud New Yorker  but at least part of Sari Schorr’s musical heart seems to lie across the pond. A regular on these shores before the pandemic,  either headlining or as a support, fortunately 2022 has finally seen a return to Europe – indeed my partner and I unexpectedly caught half of a show while on a weekend in Paris.

The UK leg featured this London date at the Half Moon and there was a decent attendance. However with respect to those who came, the audience was worryingly on the older end of the age spectrum and it left me wondering why even emerging artists cannot seem to attract a younger following.

SARI SCHORR- Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

Her band seems to vary on each show and there was a different rhythm section from the Paris gig in Roger Inniss and Roy Martin without any loss of fluency.

‘Maybe I’m Foolin’ was a fine opening statement of the personable American’s strengths, powerful blues rock, passionately delivered with a fine, melodic solo from guitarist Ash Wilson. ‘Kiss Me’ was more insidious, taking a while longer to reveal its charms, but the set was pleasingly diverse.

SARI SCHORR- Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

While ‘Demolition Man’ was perhaps the closest in the set to old-school Chicago blues, ‘Back To LA’ was something different again, a  heartland rocker with Sari’s throaty delivery reminding me very much of Melissa Etheridge.  ‘Beautiful’ was a lengthy slow blues, showing that she is far more than just a belter, culminating in a superb solo from Ash, and ‘Turn The Radio On’ had a mid-pocket feel.

However for me the hard hitting blues rockers such as ‘The New Revolution’ and ‘Freedom’ , dedicated to the people of Ukraine where Sari has family, worked the best. Her raunchy voice had the perfect musical complement in Ash’s guitar playing and the intuitive Hammond organ and piano work of one of the masters of that scene. former King King stalwart Bob Fridzema.

SARI SCHORR- Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

Their collective ability to pace a song, mixing and matching power and restraint, meant that the chorus of ‘Damn The Reason’ came over as even more huge, and also perfectly suited the cover of Mott the Hoople/Bad Company’s ‘ReadyFfor Love’.

‘Ordinary Life’ was a complete departure, slow, sultry and soulful, before a return to that favoured rockier sound with ‘King Of Rock n Roll’ and the raunchy ‘Thank You’ with its catchy ‘why don’t you believe’ chorus.

SARI SCHORR- Half Moon, Putney, London, 13 April 2022

Sari then closed by fusing two of her favourite Leadbelly songs as a snatch of ‘In The Pines’ (better known as ‘How Do You Sleep’)  led into ‘Black Betty’. Slow, mournful and stripped back before Ash belatedly let loose, this treatment could not be more different in style than the best known Ram Jam version. There was a solitary encore in ‘Valentina’, a lively rock out with Ash’s solo gathering pace, as he pulled poses in extrovert fashion.

With no new material to promote, it was a set broadly similar to those I saw before the pandemic. For anyone attending for the first time though, it was a perfect showcase for the talents of an artist who really deserves to be much bigger than she is.

Album review: RONNIE ROMERO – Raised On Radio

Frontiers [Release date: 15.04.22]

Ronnie Romero’s taken an opportunity that not many singers get. Given the chance to record an album of covers, he’s deep dived into his favourite back catalogues and emerged with some unsung classics in his hands.

The definitive, blue collar American rock of Grand Funk Railroad, ‘Sin’s A Good Man’s Brother’ kicks off the album in raucous style. Romero loves this song, you can tell. Many do, it’s been covered numerous times. Most notably a funky, full fat version by Monster Magnet. This one gets under the music’s skin. Great opener.

And who would have thought this tough as teak metal vocalist would be picking out great, if little known, melodic rock/AOR tracks by Survivor, Bad Company 2.0 and Foreigner.

‘Backstreet Love Affair’ (from Survivor 1986 album, When Seconds Count) was a perfect FM radio staple. An AOR fix for summer night romance.

Written by Brit producer Terry Thomas, and vocalist Brian Howe, ‘No Smoke Without Fire’ was a top ten US hit for Bad Company MkII. It came from the band’s much derided Dangerous Age (1989), the second album which dared to take the band into AOR/Melodic Rock territory.

Then when you take Foreigner’s romantic, soulful, ‘Girl On The Moon’ into account you can see the melodic rock/AOR pattern emerging.

Even taking a fiercely dramatic version of Kansas’s ‘Play The Game’ and a convincing faux rap on Russ Ballard’s minor hit, ‘Voices’ into account, it’s a brave decision by Romero to include so much (high quality) AOR material, from bands often belittled by Metal fans.

But … Romero has seized the chance with both hands. His versions sound authentic, nuanced, and sung with conviction, revealing that there’s much more to Romero than meets the eye. Our only complaint, given the album’s title, is that there’s no Journey cover here. Next time perhaps. ***1/2

Album review – SEMBLANT – Vermillion Eclipse

Frontiers [release date: 15.04.22]

Semblant’s second album on the Frontiers label sees this Brazilian Melodic (Death) Metal band confidently cement its leading position in the “one to watch” category.

The “Death” description is misleading, and only gets used in the media to reflect the band’s mixed use of “harsh” vocals.

Having lost the opportunity to tour the USA with their last album Obscura (2020), due to the pandemic, they’re clearly coming out their corner swinging with Vermillion Eclipse.

On the surface the album is full of cool, colourful song titles. Underneath, it’s almost impossible to peel back the layers. Even if you wanted to.
Opener, ‘Enrage’, ‘Bloodred Monarchy’ and ‘Black Sun Genesis’ engage in breathtaking changes of pace as each narrative progresses and each story unfolds.

They risk sensory overload at times – ‘Purified’ and ‘Neverending Fall’ are particularly hypnotic – with the band’s cross generic melodic / symphonic metal stylings pushing the music to the edge of the frame.

All through Vermillion Eclipse, the band bait a disquieting, doomful agenda with catchy hooks and a rock solid mix of power metal aggression, laced with progmetal complexity. The combination of Mizuho Lin’s soprano and the clean and harsh vocals of Sergio Mazul is consistently effective.

These are unusual, daring combinations of approach and style, often drawing out a voluntary emotional response.

Ten minute closing track, ‘Day One Oblivion’ crams all of the above into a glorious rush of guttural and soprano amplitude, both running in parallel to slick guitar and keyboard gearshifts, as the song straightens out in a climactic rush for the finishing line. It’s a magnificent closer.

The band’s unexpected mix of styles might hold it back. Open minded metal fans will love Vermillion Eclipse. ****

Album review: JACK BROADBENT – Ride

Jack Broadbent - Ride

www.jackbroadbent.co.uk Crow’s Feet Records

Album number five from the critically acclaimed guitarist Jack Broadbent. Hailed as “The new master of the slide guitar” by the Montreux Jazz Festival and “The real thang” by the legendary Bootsy Collins, Jack Broadbent has wowed international audiences with his unique blend of virtuosic acoustic and slide guitar, and poignant folk and blues-inspired vocals.

“I had to come off the road because of the Covid pandemic and was going to work on a solo project of acoustic material,” he explains. Instead, with Quebec-based drummer and co-producer Mark Gibson, “…we started playing some of the more rock ‘n’ roll stuff I had, and we couldn’t deny that there was a kind of vibe happening. So, I just went full steam ahead in that direction which brought the sound of this album into focus. We built on those grooves and ended up with ‘Ride’.”

The rock feel of the record is further established as the album was recorded as a power trio, with Jack Broadbent being joined by drummer Mark Gibson and bassist Mick Broadbent. Indeed, ‘I Love Your Rock N Roll’ rocks out like a good ‘un, perfect as a live set opener on his upcoming gigs perhaps? ‘Grace’ possesses a lovely acoustic blues beat to start things off, before the rhythm section segue in with their groove. They make it all seem so easy and effortless.

At the other end of the scale ‘Baby Blue’ allows Jack Broadbent to highlight his undoubted guitar playing skills, as well as providing one of the album’s vocal highlights. ‘Who Are You?’ is a winning mix of blues and rock. Loving the keys that add thet little extra bit of class to the song.

Eight songs in under forty minutes, Jack Broadbent doesn’t hang around and it is all top quality blues infused music. An album to be enjoyed by the casual blues fan, as well as the hardened blues fanatic. Impressive work Mr Broadbent. ****

Album review: FIRST SIGNAL – Closer To The Edge

Frontiers [Release date 08.04.22]

First Signal started life as a collaboration between Harry (Harem Scarem) Hess and Denis (Pink Cream 69) Ward. Two big names in the melodic rock genre. This is the third album since without Ward. Daniel Flores stepped into his shoes with the 2016 release, One Step Over The Line.

Anyone who’s heard the previous 3 releases will know that First Signal is neither a wannabe of Harem Scarem nor indeed, of Marcie Free’s Signal. (which in a way was a disappointment to many rock fans).

But all 3 delivered good quality, well written melodic rock. Flores’s occasionally characterless production was redeemed by the calibre of the material.

It all comes apart with this new release.

Anyone in anyway familiar with the genre knows that the real trick is merging the past with the present, in a manner that may even resound with general audiences as well as aficionados.

Sad to say, Closer To The Edge is a more than fitting title here. Too many of the songs balance awkwardly on the slippery slope that leads to the cliff edge of mediocrity.

Most seem constructed from cuttings brushed up from the studio floor on a Harem Scarem off day. The PR stuff indicates that the ubiquitous Alessandro DelVecchio and his sometime writing partner, Pete Alpenborg were involved.

Thanks to Hess’s vocals generating some much needed excitement, only ‘Show Me The Way’, ‘One More Time’ and the title track ‘Close To The Edge’ break free from Flores’s milky, lightweight production.

When they do, they move out of the shadow of the artists’ past glories, and remind us just why we fell in love with this genre in the first place. **1/2

Gig review: THE CHRISTIANS – Sub 89, Reading, Friday 15 April 2022

A pretty decent turn out for a Good Friday, however, you do wonder if the cost of living crisis, coupled with the lingering effects of the pandemic, are hitting audience numbers, as I would have expected a few more in for such a notable name as the Christians. Live music is a perfect pick me up and tonic, which is worth the entry fee alone and at a venue like Sun 89 you can get up close and interact with the band more than at a soulless arena shed.

Before the Christians were duo Tomorrow Bird, featuring solo artist Jen Bird, and Simon Driscoll from folk rock band, Burnt Tomorrow. Enjoyable and easy on the ear, their two vocals worked well together and they certainly had a few fans in the crowd.

I have seen The Christians before, thirty four years ago (!) when they were supporting Fleetwood Mac at Man City’s football ground. To my shame I headed to the bar when they were on as my younger self was not as musically rounded as now…

Many will remember the Christians for a series of hit singles at the end of the 80s and a couple of albums, one of which, 1990’s ‘Colour, topped the UK album charts. Vocalist and charismatic frontman Garry Christian remains as the sole original member, joined by Joey Ankrah (vocals & lead guitar), Neil Griffiths (acoustic guitar and vocals), Craig Connet (drums), Bobby Kewley (bass) and Mike Triggs (keyboards).

The gig nearly stopped as soon as it started after the first couple of songs Garry Christian was asking the venue staff for a towel and water, not an unreasonable request. Throughout the set he was in in good spirits, with a sharp wit dealing with audience quips and wishing for Everton to stay up – maybe not what you’d expect from a lifelong Liverpool supporter!

The singing of Garry Christian and Joey Ankrah was simply superb. They both have rich, soulful, melodic vocals and Joey is a top notch guitarist too. Their hits ‘Born Again’ and ‘Words’ (dedicated to all the couples in the audience) received a warm reception from the audience. The musicianship of the band is really something to behold, each one playing an important part to the band’s overall sound.

‘Greenbank Drive’ gave the audience a chance to contribute with an extended set of ‘woah-oh-oh’s’, which Garry informed us was good for our health to sing with as much gusto as possible. The song segued in parts of the classic ‘Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone’, one to get the old feet tapping along too.

The band were on a roll with ‘Forgotten Town’, ‘Ideal World’ and ‘When The Finger Points’ all being lapped up by the enthusiastic crowd. The latter saw plenty of boogieing from some of the audience.

A strict ten o’clock curfew meant they were quickly back on for an encore. ‘Sad Songs’ was the song of the night for this reviewer. Something about the band’s performance of it made it very special indeed. They closed with their biggest hit, the Isley Brothers cover ‘Harvest For The World’, which you can’t really follow and provided a fitting finale to one of the best gigs I have witnessed in many a year.

They are on tour throughout the coming months, including festival appearances at Cornbury and Weyfest amongst others, and they are well worth seeing. Fame maybe fleeting but class is permanent as the Christians proved tonight in Reading.

Album review: TREAT – The Endgame

Frontiers [Release date: 08.04.22]

Here’s Treat again. The Endgame, produced by the talented Peter Mansson, is the band’s fourth album since their rebirth in 2006.

In the world of second and third generation melodic rock, only Harem Scarem, Leverage and Fair Warning can be mentioned in the same breath.

Founding members, Robert Ernlund, Patrick Applegren, Ander Wikstrom, plus long time ‘new’ members, Jamie Borger and Nalle Pahlsson are all in this together, still stringing together colourful strands of soaring, hard edged melodies, wrapped around remarkably sustained song structures.

The album pivots on first single ‘Home Of The Brave’. It is hair raising, heroic music, driven by a heartstring-tugging undercurrent of melancholy. You can feel the spark ignite in your bloodstream, as Wikstrom’s guitarwork plays with classic celtic leitmotifs, firing up powerful emotions, leading directly into an uplifting, anthemic hook.

The track is bookended at the front end by ‘Freudian Slip’, ‘Rabbit Hole’ and ‘Sinbiosis’. All three are ripe, fully formed melodic rock songs, showing up the band to be as tight as the proverbial drum, collusive almost, powerfully conveying the majesty of their epic melodic rock pieces. These guys have been in each other’s company for so long that you would swear they must by now have developed some kind of musical telepathy.

‘Sinbiosis’, perhaps makes the most impression, catching the mood, creating a fresh sense of urgency as its tough as teak riffs and swirling rock crescendos stray way into melodic metal territory.

The tracks on the other side of ‘Home Of The Brave’ hold a consistent line, with ‘Both Ends Burning’, a huge, sweeping melodrama and ‘Parade’, a heart stopping power ballad, probably the picks.

The melodic rock genre may well not have returned to the mainstream, but a healthy market exists, especially throughout Europe. You would think that even bands like Treat would find it hard to stand out now.

Yet, The Endgame proves the competition’s got a long way to catch up. ****

Album review: KAPREKAR’S CONSTANT – The Murder Wall

KAPREKAR’S CONSTANT – The Murder Wall

Talking Elephant Records [Release date 25.03.22]

Kaprekar’s Constant is the brainchild of a couple of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Al Nicholson and Nick Jefferson. Kaprekar’s Constant is rounded out with David Jackson of Van Der Graaf Generator fame (sax, flutes, whistles), Mark Walker (drums & percussion), Bill Jefferson (vocals), Dorie Jackson (vocals, vocal arrangements) and Mike Westergaard (piano, keyboards, backing vocals). There is a special guest in Judie Tzuke on ‘Years To Perfect’.

‘The Murder Wall’ is a concept album, telling stories of climbers attempting the North Face of the Eiger. The band draw on stories set between the years of 1935 and 2007, telling of those who attempted one of the most dangerous ascents in mountaineering. Since 1935, at least sixty-four climbers have died, earning it the German nickname Mordwand, literally “murder(ous) wall”.

Although a concept album naturally has the listener assuming it will be a prog rock delight, Kaprekar’s Constant have a distinct folk side to their music too, which makes for a heady and enjoyable mix on this album.

The whole album holds together well, although there are three real stand outs. Firstly, ‘Victorious’ with its pomp keys and rousing chorus is a ‘must hear’. Judie Tzuke adds her vocal magic to the short but sweet ‘Years to Perfect’ and finally, ‘A Silent Drum’, which recounts the story of a son who finished the climb some forty years after his father died on the same climb. It shows off the band’s folk side with plenty going on musically behind the vocals of Dorie Jackson and Bill Jefferson. A touch of Mike Oldfield on the this one in the arrangement.

Sit back, get the headphones on and immerse yourself in a wondrous soundscape that truly brings to life the mountaineer’s tales and that of the mountain itself. ****

EP review: WAX ON WATER – The Drip (Part 2)

www.facebook.com/waxonwater [Release date 25.03.22]

Wax on Water are fronted by singer, songwriter and producer Maya Damaris who was joined by guitarist Steven Blessing back in 2019. The band released the first of the ‘Drip’ series ‘The Drip- Part 1’ back in November. The full drip album is due in June and it seems to work bands releasing a series of EPs that later emerge on a full album – the Bloody Nerve spring to mind.

Musically Wax On Water draw their musical influences from a wide ranger including 70s rock, grunge, electronica, and industrial.

‘You Know When You Know’ was the lead song off the EP, a fair summation of the band’s sound mixing guitar, synths and the intriguing vocals of Maya Damaris. Hard to draw a comparison but has the rough hew of say Beth Hart on the rockier moments, whilst on ‘The Wrong Way’ has a seductive tone that works well weaved into the guitars. No surprise that this song was chosen for radio play.

‘In The Shadows’ is another primed for airplay, a hypnotic riff and those vocals hit the spot again. ‘All Over Me’ with its neat little rock n roll beat meets electronica is an instant hit on the ears.

Wax On Water fully deserve some of your precious listening time as they have their own unique sound, yet have enough musical touchpoints that make them sound familiar. ***1/2

Gig review: FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

They release albums at regular intervals but touring has always been FM’s lifeblood. They dipped their toe back in the live environment with selected shows last year,  but this twice postponed London show was part of a tour to promote new album ‘Thirteen’.

However, for a band big enough to play Shepherds Bush Empire on many recent London shows, the turnout was very disappointing with the balcony closed, and a makeshift seating area created on the floor, the rest of which was hardly bursting – a worrying indicator for live music generally.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

Another band seeking to make up for lost time in the reformed Grand Slam were a very well-matched support and one with an FM link as keyboardist Jem Davis was doing double duty. Appropriately for the band that was originally Philip Lynott’s post-Thin Lizzy vehicle, opener ‘Gone Are The Days’ reminded me of the latter’s ‘Do Anything You Want To’ while sole remaining original member Laurence Archer then cranked out a classic riff to ‘Nineteen’ which of course the Irishman later released as his final single.

The set mixed newer material from the ‘Hit The Ground’ album such as the title track with old stuff, Laurence excelling on guitar on ’Dedication’, maybe with that suppressed anger that his song was taken without his consent for a Thin Lizzy compilation.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

Mike Dyer is quite a character with a vocal delivery not far removed from Lynott and enjoyably expressive body language, though his quip  ‘I’m sweating more than Prince Andrew’ was perhaps the wrong analogy as that was the one thing the now disgraced Duke of York claimed not to be able to do!

Moving swiftly along, ‘Crime Rate‘ was a real revelation as the band and in particular bassist Rocky Newton and drummer Benjy Reid created a menacingly smouldering, bluesy atmosphere over which Laurence built his solo, while ‘Crazy’ was more straight ahead. The solo called to mind ‘Are You Ready’ and comparisons kept recurring with both Lizzy and UFO – aided by the image of a baseball capped guitarist crouched studiously over a flying V – but in my biased book that only added to their appeal.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

The set ended with two of Grand Slam’s originals in ‘Military Man’ – its lyrics particularly poignant right now- which got a really good reception, doubtless many being familiar with Gary Moore’s version; indeed many, as I did, might have seen the great Irish guitarist play it in 1985 when a certain new British AOR band called FM was in support!  The epic ‘Sisters of Mercy’, with its Emerald-like riff, concluded a 45 minute set a cut above what you would normally expect from a support.

For FM, there was instantly a warm and reassuring feeling as, after an intro tape, Steve Overland opened with a trademark ‘who-oah’ and another ‘oh-yeah’, introducing a lively ‘Synchronised’, the title track from the 2020 album they never got to tour, before the twin guitar intro to the evergreen ‘Bad Luck’, as early as I have ever seen it in an FM set,  with all the melodic hooks that somehow failed to make it a big hit (along with all their other singles) back in the day.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

But the first half of a substantially revamped setlist was a bold decision to focus on the current and more recent phases of their career, beginning with a fun ‘Life Is A Highway’ with an intro that mixed Survivor’s ‘High On You’ and Van Halen’s ‘Panama’, while the first of a trio from the new album was a gem in ‘Waiting On Love’, Steve’s ever superb vocals topping off a chorus that was pure AOR bliss.

However ‘Crosstown Train’ was rockier with Jim Kirkpatrick’s wah-wah solo showing his bluesier instincts and he again shone on the lazy feel of newie ‘Long Road Home’, which equally showcased Steve’s soulful vocals.  The surprise of the night (for those who hadn’t been following setlists from the start of the tour) was ‘Crack Alley’, for me one of the few highlights of their third album ‘Takin It To The Streets’ and one which had rarely if ever been played before.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

After ‘Killed By Love’ with its ‘who-oah’ chorus made for participation, they belatedly moved onto early material with the crowd only too keen to take over parts of ‘Frozen Heart’ before after Steve joked they’d play another song from the 1950s, ‘Dangerous’ boasted a driving rhythm, with added colour from Jem’s keyboards, and a pair of massive hooks on the bridge and chorus. My delight at hearing it was only tempered by being unable to understand, 36 years on, why it was somehow excluded from debut album ‘Indiscreet’.

The old favourites then came thick and fast with ‘That Girl’, ‘Tough It Out’ and ‘I Belong To The Night’, all delivered faithfully to the originals but sounding all the fresher for an enforced rest and received rapturously.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

Indeed the atmosphere was boiling nicely and did not let up when they took a trip back to their first reunion album ‘Metropolis’ with Jim’s eponymous guitar intro leading into ‘Over You’ with that rolling rhythm and harmony lead guitar break. Finally they brought things right up to date, ending the main set with the standout  cut from ‘Thirteen’ in ‘Turn This Car Around’ which came over just as well live as I hoped it would.

The show had also emphasised how an FM live set focuses on the songs, as they are thickly packed in, not overly extended beyond their studio life and with a minimum of chat and set pieces. Yet the  joy the band exude with their smiles and synchronised movements greatly adds to their attraction as a live act.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

The encore began with a synth solo slot from Jem leading into ‘Story Of My Life’  which has become the ultimate showcase for Steve’s  voice, as he sang it initially alone then with band members joining primarily to add vocal rather than musical backing.

There was then a surprise from previous setlists as ‘Blood And Gasoline’ made a return, all the more welcome to hear Jim tackle a solo that was made for his soulful guitar tone, before the traditional closer in ‘Other Side Of Midnight’, the crowd singing along to another debut album AOR anthem with the band – including Jem upfront with his keytar- pulling the poses.

FM- Islington Assembly Hall, London, 7 April 2022

A band singing and playing as well as ever; excellent sound and lighting; a refreshed set list with the perfect blend of old, more recent and new; and prolonged absence making both the heart grow fonder and the smiles on and off stage broader. All those factors combined to create the biggest buzz I have had after an FM show for a long time.

Five Quick Q’s: SUZI QUATRO

Suzi Quatro is celebrating her 58-year career with a show at the Royal Albert Hall on April 20th. Get Ready to ROCK! caught up with the trailblazing Queen of Rock’ n’ Roll for a quick pre-show chat…

You have a new boxset coming out on Cherry Red, can you tell us a bit about it?

Yes, it’s the first 6 albums plus unreleased tracks, a live cd from Japan and a video & DVD -excellently done, and excellent quality. Was number 1 on Amazon just on presales.

You must have a million wonderful stories from your career, if we were at a dinner party and you were sharing one anecdote – what would it be?

I was headlining a big festival in Finland, it came to the end of the show – and I was really, really, milking it…I took about 10 minutes to wave to everyone and leave the stage.. there was a monitor in front of the staircase.. and over I went.. upside down, legs kicking in the air, and my bass still attached. It went down in history as my ‘big Finish!!!! I was mortified.

What can we expect from the RAH show next week – do you have any surprises up your sleeve or special guests?  Do you get a kick out of playing such a legendary venue?

I am so looking forward to this show. Yes, there is three surprise guests. You will get your favorite hits, favorite album tracks from 1973 to 2021…I play piano, I play the drums.. and you will be thoroughly entertained – it’s what I do.

What’s next for you (after the RAH show) ?

Starting lots of postponed gigs from the last 2 years in Europe and Australia end of year.

Any message for your fans?

For the old ones -thank you for sticking with me, I would be nothing without you.. and for the new ones, welcome aboard the Quatro rock n roll train….

Album review: DANNY BEARDSLEY – Chase The Sun

DANNY BEARDSLEY - Chase The Sun

www.dannybeardsley.com [Release date 24.06.22]

I think the first thing to say about this release.  Isn’t eco-friendly packaging s—e?  The album arrives dog-eared and bendy.  Surely we can do better than this?

Sorry, now the music.  We reviewed Beardsley’s previous album ‘Blood From A Stone’ and were mightily impressed.  So expectations are high for the sophomore release.  And although our early, glowing, review of that album remains top of Google in a search there is no reference in latest despatches.  Which is sad.  And probably a PR malfunction.

I often think you are too old to rock when you constantly hear other artist’s songs in the mix especially when they are a bit of a guilty pleasure.   Maybe I’d be a good troubleshooter for Ed Sheeran? Opener ‘The Chance To Live’ reminds me of Mel C’s ‘Here I Go Again’ (Reason, 2003) in the verse and breakdown.   I suppose there are only so many notes…

At least Beardsley has the chops.  His early precision playing with the highly regarded instrumental trio ‘The Parallax Method’ stands him in good stead.  A robust, rhythmic thrust is always rather appealing.

If there is a criticism the production is a bit thin and extra heft could have been lent to the hard rock on offer.  Beardsley has done all the recording and mixing so I am afraid stands accused.  In different hands, these tunes would have had much greater impact.  Those riffs just don’t thunder out of the bins.  Not round here anyway.

That said, there’s a handful of highlights on this album including ‘Reap What You Sow’, ‘Fade’ and ‘Hurricane’ but ‘Lonely Mile’ with its chopping and changing tempos doesn’t work at all.

Maybe this album will give Beardsley the breakthrough he deserves, although it doesn’t quite match the impressive debut sonically or songfully.

At times you can hear a Kotzen, maybe a Smith Kotzen.  And perhaps just not enough Beardsley.  ***1/2

Album review: FASHION – fashion music

FASHION - fashion music

Easy Action [Release date 01.05.22]

This double CD is a great opportunity to hear a proto Fashion, the Birmingham band who made some impact in the early 1980s with their blend of electro funk.  They signed to Arista in 1981, released ‘Fabrique’ but without their original frontman Luke ‘Skyscraper’ James.

Prior to their first signing to IRS (and 1979′s ‘Product Perfect’) they made several independent demos and this collection brings these and other recordings together plus the band’s first four singles with B-sides.

The second disc is mainly an unreleased live show (in excellent sound quality), recorded at RAF Brize Norton.  Sadly the booklet is a bit light on detail and dates, merely referring punters to Skyscraper’s biography ‘Stairway To Nowhere’ also the name of his 2009 album when he revived the band name.

For someone who saw the band playing live c.1982 and bought their later singles, the big question is how the early sound differed from the subsequent configuration.  The difference is revealed in that opening salvo of early singles.

‘Steady Eddie Steady’ (also included in different versions) and ‘Killing Time’ fuses reggae/pop possibly influenced by The Police (with whom they toured in the UK and USA when signed with Miles Copeland’s label).  Fashion’s formation coincided with the ascendancy of Sting but also the popularity of fellow Brummie bands like U.B.40 and Steel Pulse who purveyed their own fusion of reggae and rock.

‘Citinite’ another early single sounds like Roxy Music on speed, whilst B-side ‘Wastelife’ is average punk along with the somewhat weird ‘Silver Blades’.  Well, it was the dawn of the 80s, a decade where anything was possible.  Fashion straddled punk whilst ushering in New Wave; they certainly looked the part.

Interestingly, of the 1978 demos only one song made the final album cut, whilst the six 1980 demos were presumably being readied for a second album before the first line-up change.

The critical thing here is that James’ replacement De Harisss wrote most of the later, arguably more mainstream, material.

The band subsequently signed to Epic and made a third album (with a new vocalist and guitarist) ‘Twilight Of Idols’ (1984).

In spite of an attempt to revive the brand in 2009 it seems that Fashion went…out of fashion.  Those who are curious should track down ‘The Height Of Fashion’ which reinforces that the band made their best work in 1982.  ***

Rising Stars: SHADOW PUPPET THEATRE

Shadow Puppet Theatre are a 4-piece Malaysian rock band based in the city of Kuala Lumpur.  GRTR! catch up with their frontman Dzul around the band’s new single ‘Codename Summer’.

How did the band get together and what made you choose ‘Shadow Puppet Theatre’ as the name?

The band initially came together as an experimental project between friends, and started with the idea of building a song from a few initial riffs which later became the song ‘Insomnified’. Then we had to decide on the name and settled on SPT as shadow puppetry is a part of our cultural heritage and also symbolizes storytelling albeit within a musical context.

New single, ‘Codename Summer’, has dark ‘cyber noir’ vibes, but also a very funk rock feel – can you tell us a bit more about the song and what inspired it?

‘Codename Summer’ from the melodic perspective, came about from fiddling around with synth mood bass sounds which formed the preliminary framework of the song idea. Those darker synth undertones set the feels for the fictional story writing, which you could say would be the imaginary child of “You” and “Mr. Robot”, starred by Henry Cavill and his killer jawline.

The video for the track is performance based but would actually lend itself to a really cool TV show or film! Do you agree? Which show or film would you choose?

Probably would work best with “You” , or we could have the chorus for “Is it cake?”

You’ve recent collaborated with Grammy Nominated producer Clinton Sparks (Lady GaGa, Pitbull) how did that come about?

Well I would say it’s more of a shout out than a collaboration, and long story short, I slid into his DM’s. I actually applied a technique he talks about in his book “How to Win Big in the Music Business”, and that’s how It all began, like a covert operation, Codename Sparks!

Is there another album – a follow up to previous album ‘John Doe’ – in the works?

Yes there is! We have mastered a few tracks and are in a the process of writing and recording a few others, which collectively will be part of our second album.

How has the Pandemic changed the band and its music?

I would think the band hasn’t really changed, we just had more time to revisit the songs we are working on in terms of arrangement, mix and production, it also gave birth to the song “Doctor” which was one for the healthcare workers.

Can we expect any Shadow Puppet Theatre live shows and how do you feel about returning to the stage?

We would be thrilled to return to the stage, hopefully in the second half of the year, as we’ve had to postpone our gigs earlier this year due to the pandemic.

Can you inspire us by recommending anything you are currently reading/watching or listening to?

Absolutely, I would recommend The Everyday Hero Manifesto by Robin Sharma. I slid into his DM’s too, see the trend here? ;p

What would be the ultimate dream going forward for the band?

Playing at Glastonbury and Coachella. Amen.

Album review: TNT – Tell No Tales and Intuition (Remasters)

Rock Candy Records [Release date: 25.03.22]

In 1984 TNT were a tight, solid rock band, populated by gifted musicians, all looking for a sound that would define them.

They had just broken through with second album, Knights Of The New Thunder, largely due to the recruitment of multi octave vocalist, Tony Harnell, who was the perfect partner for guitarist, Ronni Le Tekrø.

Le Tekro’s intuitive axework, sometimes big and bold, at others scaled down and intimate, worked well with Harnell’s vocal intensity.

Tell No Tales came in 1987.

The singles, ‘10,000 Lovers” and ‘Everyone’s A Star’ were the band’s calling card to the European and US markets. Demonstrations that they could compete and win in the cutthroat arena that was MTV.

Produced by Bjorn (Stage Dolls/Ian Hunter) Nessjoe, the songs catapulted the band onto the world stage, winning them awards and support gigs with Stryper, Twisted Sister and others.

Those two singles were shaped by the hard rock template of the time… but two standout tracks later in the album … the sprightly ‘Listen To Your Heart’, and the pared down ballad, ‘Northern Lights” indicated a more AOR direction of travel was on the horizon. ***1/2

Intuition was released in 1989. The polished, American AOR sounds of ‘Tonight I’m Falling’, ‘End Of The Line’ and ‘Take Me Down’ convinced the critics and the public. It led  to sold out headline tours in the USA, and ultimately making it their best selling album.

They were clearly writing to order and executing the task with skill and conviction.

The title track is a real blast of commercial pop metal, with just enough nuance and rock sophistication to make it that little bit special. And ‘A Nation Free’, the one and a half minute opener, has that patriotic appeal for national unity that always goes down well, no matter which part of the world is listening. ****

Rock Candy Records have remastered both with their usual flair. Finding the right balance between volume, tone and clarity seldom seems an impossible task for their back room boys.

Album review: JIZZY PEARL’S LOVE/HATE – Hell, Ca

Golden Robot Records [Release date 01.08.22]

Since the late ‘80’s Love/Hate’s Jizzy Pearl has been one of the most instantly recognisable voices in rock, and Pearl himself has been releasing consistently great music throughout that time (and not only music, see his latest book “All The Devils” if you want a good read). Latest album “Hell, CA” has all the hallmarks of a classic Love/Hate record= clever lyrics, great guitar riffs and those Pearl vocals.

It’s a bit of a cliché sometimes to say “there is not a weak track here”, but this really is the case with “Hell, CA”. The album cranks to life with opening track “One Hot Minute” and it could easily be 1989. For me the trio of groove laden “Gonna Take You Higher”, “Soul Mama” and the slower “One Last Chance” are all essential listening, the latter being a fine example of Pearl’s cleverly crafted lyrics.

“When You Gonna Come Home”, “Battered and Bruised” and “Lonely Days Are Gone” are also great classic sounding Love/Hate, but it is “Hard To Say Goodbye” that deserves a mention. The track is a tribute to Pearl’s late brother Bill, who passed away in 2018, but could easily be a song about Quiet Riot bandmate Frankie Banali who died in 2020.

All in all, “Hell, CA” was well worth the wait and with Pearl’s loyal following in the UK, hopefully we will get to hear the album live soon. *****

Gig review: SOUNDBAY FESTIVAL – Patti Pavilion Swansea – 25th – 27th March 2022

Finally, after what seemed like a rollercoaster ride, Soundbay went ahead. All be it with a slightly rearranged line up, a couple of bands pulling out at the last minute due to illness, the core of the line up remained and on paper for the first festival, it was a pretty damn good one.

Friday began early evening with the look of a warm up night. Opening things up were a local initiative to give youngsters a chance to learn a musical instrument, sing etc, The Rock Project consisted of 5 members plus their teacher performing a handful of rock covers, Highway To Hell being their opener. Parents and friends looked on proudly while recording on their phones.

I don’t know if this was their first time playing on a stage together but if so they didn’t show any sign of nerves or being overawed by the size of the venue. They were really enjoying the 30 minutes or so they had, full of smiles and playing up to the cameras, none more so than their teacher who threw himself fully into his performance. It was a great idea by the promoters, who knows, one of these band members may go on to great things in the future.

Beth Blade and her Beautiful Disasters played a well received set , more akin to 80s style in performance , Beth has always put 100 % in every time i have seen the band, and now with a strong line up and more frequent shows , the soon to be released new album will hopefully showcase all the hard work put in.

Another band who in my humble opinion need to play more shows, especially across the bridge, are Fallen Temples. A hard hitting 3 piece on the harder side but laced with melody you wouldn’t expect. Adam on vocals and guitar makes it look easy, i saw them a few weeks ago without their bass player and they kind of got lost on the big stage, tonight with the full band it was far more cohesive. Over the weekend there were a few bands that I felt the need to keep an eye on and Fallen Temples were one of them.

Fair play to Toby Jepson and his Wayward Sons, they are one of the hardest working bands in the UK, always seem to be out playing somewhere or other. All that hard work has paid off and they are now headlining festivals, deservedly so, bearing in mind they only started in 2017 , and two of those years were broken down by Covid!

Now three albums in it is quite a dramatic rise in that short amount of time. Tonight’s show was shoehorned in to the rescheduled dates that had been cancelled previously and by the sound of it the tour has been going magnificently well.

Toby, resplendent in his double Levi ensemble, Doc Martins and baker boy cap, tooks centre stage. Ever the consummate frontman, never putting a foot wrong. What I love about this band is that it is a band, it isn’t Toby Jepson with three faceless sidemen so to speak.  Flanked by Sam Wood with his flailing locks and broad smile occasionally appearing through all the hair.

On the  other side of the stage, the ageless Nic Wastell, the bass playing Angus Young. he makes me tired just watching him. The guys played an 18 song set, that covered the three albums, and while it looked unbearably hot on stage the energy never once dropped. It was a great choice in finishing off the first night, WS always deliver, the only negative I could mention was there wasn’t enough people there to witness it, their loss I guess.

Saturday

Thankfully it was a reasonable time for the start to Saturday which, due to a band pull out, was put back a little bit more. However, the crowd were thin on the ground for Anchor Lane, but it didn’t deter them from playing a blinder.

The Glaswegians play with attitude, the songs are hard with gnarly verses. It looks like they have learned a lot from the recent Ricky Warwick tour and are another band of this new generation that are honing their sound and working hard. Their  rewards come in playing spots on various festivals in 2022.

The Howling Tides have had a fruitful 12 months, appearing at Steelhouse in 2021,  Winters End a month ago, signing a great management deal and also benefitting from being on the four band bill with Ricky Warwick. They have definitely turned a corner, a better direction which has impacted on their live shows.

An almost ferocious set, but with a confidence that belies their ages, Robert the singer and guitarist has that voice which lends itself more to the harder bluesy soaked style which I would love to hear it in a purer form on a slowed down song. Haydn, the other guitarist, looks as though he needs a letter from his parent to be here, though there is nothing baby faced about his playing, a matured player and the perfect foil for Robert.

Sam Millar’s next vehicle, after the sad demise of Bigfoot, is a bit of a different animal. Already on the backfoot the day before when a member went down ill, they actually reworked vocal and guitar parts on the journey down.

Sam looked a little unsettled which is understandable, however the Sass Bandits pulled together and gave a great set. Sam has a habit of writing a great song with a killer hook. and his playing, which goes without saying, has always been first class. None of that has changed and this is one I would like to see again with the full band.

One of the names which I enjoyed seeing on the poster was Matti Alfonzetti and if you were a fan back in the 80s/ 90s you would know why.  He is the voice behind Jagged Edge and Red White and Blues which were names well known in the UK.

Tonight it was an acoustic set alongside Adam Wardle also from RWB, delving into  his back catalogue and future releases of his solo work. He also  got to show off that ageless voice with Jagged Edge songs ‘You Dont Love Me’, ‘Out In The Cold’ and with  the RWB track ‘Rescue Me’.

It  was a set which gave everyone a chance just to listen to 2 guitars and one voice. It has been around ten years since he last graced the UK, so a bucket list moment for sure. He returns in may this year with his solo band for a few dates, I would highly recommend going along.

What can be said about Ricky Warwick that hasn’t been said already? Whether it is with Black Star Riders, Thin Lizzy, or as a duo with Damon Johnson,  he is another of those artists who gives his all onstage. Tonight it is his Fighting Hearts alongside him, long time bass player Richard Vernon, with new hearts Ben Christo on Guitar and Jack Taylor on drums.

The bulk of the set covered his solo work, concentrating on his last release ‘When Life WasHard and Fast’. However, there is no way Ricky could play without having a nod to his past with The Almighty with ‘Over The Edge’ and the classic’ Free n Easy’.

There were also versions of Black Star Riders ‘Finest Hour’ and Lizzy’s ‘Jailbreak’ and even a cover of ‘Iron Fist’. Ever the consummate pro, Ricky knows how to work a crowd, and having such strong connections with South Wales and the Steelhouse Festival, he is much loved down this way.

The guitar partnership works well with Ben Christo, it looks like they have been playing together years, Ben is an accomplished player himself but is more than willing to let Ricky have the spotlight. This was the last night of the tour amid rumours that Ricky voice was struggling but he sounded fantastic, the band were on fire and gave us a great finish to the Saturday.

Sunday

Sunday began as it did all weekend with beautiful weather on the Swansea coast. Thankfully on entering the venue it was noticeably busier than the previous day.

As line ups go the Sunday was stronger with a great mix of genres, so if you like your blues then These Wicked Rivers are perfect for you, they play it so damn well. Their sound had me counting how many members are on stage , the five of them make such a rich sound that it filled the room. 30 minutes didn’t seem long enough for myself or the crowd that gave them a huge sound of approval.

Valhalla Awaits are a relatively new name to many people, born from the ashes of Revoker, The Blackout and Buffalo Summer. They are quickly being talked about as one of those aforementioned ones to watch. Built around powerful riffs and the immense vocals of Andrew Hunt, the band just seem to gel onstage with each other. With huge hooks in a number of songs these guys could go onto greater things given the right breaks.

One band I was looking forward to sseing were Daxx and Roxanne. I caught them on the second stage at Rockstock back in December and was blown away by what I saw and heard. I like a band who entertains not only musically but visually  and there is so much going on with this band.

If you like the guitar sound of AC/DC  and Airbourne then this band will blow your mind. They interact with each other constantly, jumping over each other, laying down, never missing a note, great fun to watch. With songs that you find yourself tapping a foot to or nodding your head. They are appearing all over the country at the smaller outdoor festivals so get in early, it will be worth it I promise.

How often can you get one top ten album chart band at a festival let alone two? Scarlet Rebels are a band that have just seemed to appear from nowhere to most people. They had a bit of bad luck before playing today with the drummer coming down with covid, so Wayne (vocals) and CJ (guitar) played an acoustic set and it went down a storm.

Stripped bare the songs take on a more emotive feel, with Wayne’s voice almost haunting through ‘Heal’. It is remarkable what a little success can do for a band in regards to confidence on stage. They have grown over the last 12 months and would give anyone a run for their money, the sky is the limit for Scarlet Rebels .

With a healthy amount of Welsh bands on the bill, it is refreshing to know that the rock scene in Wales is vibrant and not just surviving. Florence Black, fresh from their support slot on the  Kris Barras tour, are a slick but brutal entity.

The crowd had swelled considerably with the Merthyr massive were down to support the boys in force. Having been fortunate to have seen them regularly over the last few months, the material from their album takes on another life on stage, from ‘Zulu’, a savagely fierce opening from the band, to the almost sedate Sun and Moon closing their set. They will be at the Tramshed soon playing their own headline show in the Steelhouse Awayday 3.

The main band today, and let’s be honest, the main band all weekend were Massive Wagons. My first taste of MW was ‘Red Dress’ which was back in 2015, from then I have seen them in front of a handful of people to headlining the Steelhouse and one thing is constant…they always put on a hell of a show. Where you leave smiling and knackered singing one of their songs you know it’s been a good show.

The atmosphere in the room before they came on was almost palpable.  Baz and the boys fired off with ‘Back To The Stack’, with Baz  swinging the mic stand out over the crowd, or kicking his way across the stage.

Baz is unique, there is no other word to do him justice,if you looked up the word frontman in a copy of Viz, you would see a photo of Baz. You go to a Wagons show for a raucous evening , while they take their music seriously , you are only a breath away from a humourous moment , ‘China Plates’ or ‘The Curry Song’ are proof of that.

With a wealth of material to choose from we get the majority from their last offering ‘House Of Noise’, with crowd favourites, ‘China Plates’, ‘Ratio’ and ‘Nails’ also included. We were also given a taste of a couple of new songs .

With Bowzer on bass further back tonight, it gives Baz the space to perform, though Adam and Stephen on guitars must be looking over their shoulder most of the set. Without doubt MW have paid their dues over the years, deserving of all the rewards they are enjoying now. They are still as approachable and as humble as ever. One of those bands that you want to do well and be successful .

The first Soundbay finally happened, a success?…yes, I think so. Swansea has long been regarded as a student city and people are doing their best to bring Rock music to the city, but punters have to support it for it to continue and thrive.

Gig review: 10cc – London Palladium, 3 April 2022

Graham Gouldman chatted to Get Ready to ROCK Radio about his career including 10cc.  This archive interview was first broadcast 12 August 2018

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

10cc occupy an unusual niche in rock history. Their run of hits, including three number ones,  make them one of the best selling UK pop acts of the seventies yet, even on those singles, there was an offbeat cleverness to them which was given even more reign on their albums.

Now, celebrating a full 50 years after their debut, a similar conundrum persists. Too good for the ‘scampi in a basket’ oldies circuit, but yet to reattain mass popularity- there is little chance of them playing Wembley Stadium as contemporaries ELO did not so long ago.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

It does not help that of their four singer songwriters, only Graham Gouldman remains in the current lineup but with guitarist Rick Fenn and drummer Paul Burgess having been touring members since the seventies, allied to some wisely chosen fresh blood, their authenticity should not be questioned.

A healthy, if somewhat reserved, Palladium crowd were warmed up by an enjoyable opening acoustic set from Paul Canning, who has worked with Graham Gouldman and had a nice line in original material and sardonic banter, before 10cc were introduced by a full length video that seemed to retool their Neanderthal Man (in their guise as Hotlegs) for a new generation.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

The tour had been billed as a greatest hits but a very proggy opener in ‘The Second Last Sitting For The Last Supper’ was the first indication that this show would actually be a lot more and indeed there was a lengthy instrumental intro before the first of the hits in ‘Art for Art’s Sake’, which Graham said had been a catchphrase of his father.

‘Life Is A Minestrone’ was among the songs showing the talents of Iain Hornal who handled many of the original Eric Stewart or Lol Creme  vocals with a marvellously silky smooth higher range and if anything eclipsed the talented Mick Wilson who was in this role when I last saw the band.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

The Dean and I’ combined its catchy ‘humdrum days’ chorus with a vocal harmonies that were a Beach Boys pastiche, while ‘Good Morning Judge’ was given a funky, swampy feel by some tasty slide guitar from Rick Fenn. This was a prime example of his low-key but tasteful and impeccable playing served the songs throughout, his one concession to flamboyance being a nattily patterned jacket.

They moved between the hits and a generous selection of album tracks, including the prophetic ‘Old Wild Men’ with some great vocal harmonies and a brief snatch of harmony lead guitar, and the brilliantly bonkers ‘Clockwork Creep’ featuring a vocal duet between Rick and Iain. The progressive elements culminated in the epic ‘Feel The Benefit’.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

These songs had a dizzying amount going on, never staying in any one place for more than a few bars, but, despite the briefest of brief solo slots for Rick Graham and Paul on the latter, without the long instrumental passages that critics of prog find so self-indulgent.

Although there were some more breezy pop moments, notably ‘Wall Street Shuffle’ and ‘The Things We Do For Love’, it was amazing in hindsight, while hearing the likes of ‘I’m Mandy Fly Me’ that they were big hits with their multi layered complexity.  ‘Silly Love’ was the nearest to heavy rock, but even then featured loads of twists and turns with a cheeky ending ‘and now for something completely silly’.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

Even more surprisingly there were a couple of new songs, after a fashion. Graham played ‘Standing Next To Me’, a song he had written about touring with RIngo Starr’s band,  sounding very McCartney esque as you might expect from a man who originally wrote hits for the Beatles sixties contemporaries, and he and Iain duetted on the latter’s ‘Say the Word’  which was equally smooth.

‘Somewhere In Hollywood’  saw a guest appearance on vocals of Kevin Godley, albeit via a typically artsy video that the band played in front of, while the album cuts kept coming deep into the set, ‘Baron Samedi’ featuring some jamming between Rick and Graham.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

Belatedly they played their No 1’s and the vocal arrangement on  ‘I’m Not In Love’ was as lush  as ever with Iain excelling, the only downside that another  video backdrop of two hirsute lovers rather detracted from the song in which spoke for itself. Then their song perhaps most associated with Graham, ‘Dreadlock Holiday’ closed the set, ending with ‘I don’t like London, I love her’, though was it just me or was the faux-West Indian accent toned down for these more enlightened times?

The bamboozling  diversity  of 10cc’s works was confirmed by the encores ‘Donna’ with acapella barber shop harmonies from  four of the band followed by ‘Rubber Bullets’, the nearest to a conventional  rock out with audience participation on an extended version and Rick moving up to the keyboard stand  to jam with Keith Hayman.

10cc- London Palladium, 3 April 2022

At 2 hours this was far more than the billed Greatest Hits show that I’d previously seen at festivals like Weyfest. It showed 10cc as innovators with a unique style best characterised as ‘progressive pop’, with the emphasis on this night on the former strand, which I hadn’t fully appreciated before.  For as long at the urbane, youthful looking Graham Gouldman is still there to give some authenticity it’s not too late for an ELO style revival.

Album review: DAVE EDWARDS – Many Rivers

DAVE EDWARDS - Many Rivers

Cadiz [Release date 24.06.22]

It would be an interesting exercise to identify those “nearly men” (or women) of rock that for whatever reason failed to realise their ambitions (if they had any).  This might be due to the musical climate, taste and preference, record label or management shenanigans, personal reticence,  lack of originality, or simply they weren’t good enough.

According to Mick Geggus’ glowing liner note “as the 80′s dawned it seemed that image played a bigger part in getting signed to a major label than unique talent.  Unless you were six feet tall with hair down to your arse, they would look the other way.”

This reissued compilation of material from the early eighties onwards might be of more interest by way of association than the actual main artist.  Dave ‘Spud’ Edwards rubbed shoulders with members of Rory Gallagher’s band – as Ramrod -  and even Rory himself when the Irishman dropped in for a blast at the Bridgehouse venue in London’s Canning Town.  Edwards now has a blue plaque at the venue.

Edwards also formed the band Remus Down Boulevard (RDB) in 1975 with Dennis Stratton, early Iron Maiden guitarist, but there are no examples included in this collection.

But maybe the lack of originality and a certain dated feel are the culprits here, in spite of evident guitar dexterity.  The opener ‘Maybe This Time’ steals Lizzy’s ‘Dancing In The Moonlight” riff and ‘Enemies’ sounds like the 1970s never went away.  ‘Baby Says’ even recalls Sir Elton’s ‘The Bitch Is Back.’

Overall it reminds me of bands like Strife who themselves remained a popular support band in the seventies but no bigger than that.

The title track, a Jimmy Cliff cover, features Gerry McAvoy’s Band including  Lou Martin and Ted McKenna but is uneventful.  The bulk of the material here is derived from Edwards’ band ‘National Gold’ who for a time included Groundhogs drummer Clive Brookes.  Sadly it seems that this is the material mostly derived from cassette tapes.

By the mid-nineties, it seems Edwards had caught on to the eighties with a power ballad ‘Forever’ and  ‘Feels Like Ice’ has a whiff of contemporary Russ Ballard.

‘Railway Station’ from 2015 (referred to as ‘Train Station’ in the notes) is a broody slow blues evoking the likes of Peter Green.  This style is probably where Edwards’ strengths really lie.

The sonic quality only really ramps up when we get to two tracks from 2017 and TNT (Not the Norwegian configuration).  But again very ordinary.

As Edwards is still active it begs the question why he hasn’t released any solo albums previously and even a compilation of more recent live material might have been more relevant (check him out on YouTube).

A rock journeyman maybe but, in terms of context,  Bernie Marsden got there before him.  ***

Gig review: VIRGIL McMAHON – Boom Boom Club, Sutton, 8 April 2022

Pete Feenstra chatted to Virgil McMahon for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 6 March 2022

Virgil McMahon guitar

They say you should never go back, but they were wrong.

Sure the levels of expectation are sometimes beyond reality and sometimes an artist never quite recaptures their former glories.

Happily tonight proves to be the exception. After taking a 6 year plus, sabbatical and in his own words “growing up”, Virgil McMahon is back, recalibrated, matured, probably a better musician and certainly a more experienced band leader.

And what a band his newly expanded quintet is! Helmed by the rhythmic pulse of Mo Pleasure – credits include Earth Wind & Fire, Ray Charles, George Duke, Stanley Clarke and Bette Midler – he locks into some magisterial grooves with drummer Jerry Brown, of Tina Turner, Dave Stewart, George Michael, Courtney Pine and M People fame.

And if the engine room positively purrs, then keyboard player Luke Smith – BB King Eric Clapton, Robin Trower, Chaka Khan etc – fits into the sonic landscape perfectly. He shifts from an essential supporting middle role with judicious fills,  into an all too infrequent soloist who brings dappled textures and rhythmic patterns to the high end.

He’s the voice of clarity in a set that has plenty of drama and tension resolving moments.

Luke Smith

And it’s the essential interplay between the trio and fellow guitarists Virgil and Joel Wildgoose that gives the band its impact.

Incredibly, this is a band that is still in its infancy, as Virgil intermittently dips into his back catalogue for the likes of the high-octane ‘Backstabber’ and a handful of covers on which he impressively leaves his own imprint.

He visibly grows in confidence on his own ‘Fell To The Floor,’ the proggy undertow of which contrasts sharply with the ascending sweep of ‘Crazy’.

The band locks together to create the perfect platform for the sonorous Peter Green classic ‘Need Your Love So Bad’. At this point Virgil’s voice teeters the brink of a croak, but he digs deeps and lets piano player Luke Smith take the strain and subtly fill the gaps.

Bassist Pleasure percolates contentedly as Virgil contorts himself to prise out an aching tone with real feel.

The band is achieves a fluent equilibrium as everything flows naturally into a pivotal moment on ‘Had To Cry Today’. It is the perfect confluence of Virgil’s spiky licks and the band’s jammed out exuberance.

There’s a priceless moment when a power outage in the middle of a Stones cover ‘Tumbling Dice’ leads to the crowd spontaneously singing the hook, before the band comes back in perfectly as if part of the set.

The new Virgil rarely wastes a note as his tasteful flurries emphasise his melodic sensibility and provides defining moments of resolution.

‘Down In The Hole’ is a joy and Virgil revels in the loose reggae feel of the Jagger/Richard long forgotten gem ‘Hey Negritta.’

The dance floor nicely fills up and just when you think things can’t get any better, up pops brother Gabriel for a guest spot on ‘Rock & Roll’,  as a combination of his manic bluster and Joel Wildgoose’s vocal takes the song home.

Virgil & Gabriel McMahon

There’s still time for a well deserved couple of encores of which ‘Silver Giver’ reaffirms what the fledgling Virgil was all about.

A decade into its tenure, the slow-fuse blues has a searing melody quality carried by the kind of emotive substance and impressive technique that will surely help Virgil and his stellar band effortlessly reconnect with his latent fan base and beyond.

Virgil & The Accelerators

A quick mention too for Sutton’s very own Steve Eggs on acoustic, alongside Peter Wass’s electric bass who fill the room with self penned country-rock meets Americana and Dylan, the perfect hors d’oeuvre for a memorable main course.

Album review: OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW – Paint This Town

OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW – Paint This Town

ATO Records [Release date 22.04.22]

Old Crow Medicine Show shine a light on the darker aspects of American life on this album –

“At the end of the day, we’re still just trying to stop you on the street and get you to put a dollar in the guitar case,” says upright bass player Morgan Jahnig. “Then once we’ve got your attention, we’re gonna tell you about things like the opioid epidemic and the Confederate flag and what’s happening with the environment—but we’re gonna do it with a song and dance.”

Opening with ‘Paint This Town’ the Old Crow Medicine Show fly out of the musical traps with one of their heaviest songs to date. Next up ‘Bombs Away’ gets the old feet tapping with a whirlwind of fiddle and banjo playing. Then there is a lovely bit of rock ‘n’ roll & honkytonk piano on ‘Lord Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise’.

Those who enjoy a bit of traditional, laid back country look further than ‘Reasons To Run’. Mind you, get your breath back as ‘Painkiller’ follows – a song about becoming addicted to the aforementioned painkillers. Not a Judas Priest cover but played at a speed metal pace, albeit bluegrass style! The band look at the change in the natural world around us on ‘Used To Be A Mountain’. They get a strong message across without coming across too preachy.

‘John Brown’s Dream’ is a strange one, with almost screaming vocals and a real air of menace in the song. Different, although maybe a step too far for some fans maybe?

The album ends with a lovely bit of old time music in ‘Hill Billy Boy’, where you can almost taste the moonshine being passed around…

Old Crow Medicine Show are in fine voice and form, with another energetic, thoughtful and above all, entertaining album. ****

Album review: RIOT ACT – Closer To The Flame

Riot Act - Closer to the Flame

Global Rock Records [Release date 01.04.22]

This is the debut album from Riot Act, the band initially formed by former ‘classic era’ Riot members Rick Ventura and Lou Kouvaris and it is a must listen to for any classic hard rock fans. Riot Act performed at the Heavy Metal Hall of Fame in 2020; Rick and Lou were inducted as Riot members in 2018, Rick Ventura was a member of the original Riot from 1979-1984.

Riot Act are guitarist Rick Ventura, Don Chaffin on vocals, Paul Ranieri on bass and Claudio Galinski on drums.

As soon as this album started, I knew I was onto an absolute winner, there’s no messing about, there’s no self-indulgence, this is classic rock at its finest, delivered with passion and it needs to be played loud! This album may be a debut, but it is clear from the opening title track, just how tight the musicianship is. Every track is action packed, pure rock and I love it. I was only half-way through the album, foot-tapping, singing along (already to a song I’ve never heard before!) when it was obvious that this is an absolute belter and I immediately added it to my albums of 2022 list.

The guitars are perfectly in harmony with the vocals, have no doubt this is rock perfection, grab your air guitar, you are definitely going to need it!

The band had this to say about the album: “Riot Act’s new album is a culmination of emotions over the past two years. From the excitement of our early rehearsals to the loss of our band mate (Lou Kouvaris, who tragically passed away of Covid19 in early 2020), struggling through a pandemic and not knowing if we were going to continue, the four of us knew that the band had much to offer.

The result of that renewed energy is “Closer To The Flame” and with joining forces with Global Rock Records we are ready for the world to hear this new music we have been working on for so long. Personal standout tracks for me (and they are all good):

“Straight for your heart” – this is so reminiscent of everything that was good about 80’s rock, it took me straight back there, my notes sum it up in one word, fabulous!

“Love Come Round” – with the indisputable line ‘she’s just trouble’, I suspect many a rocker can relate to this song.

“Right Between the Eyes” this was my absolute favourite track of the album, reminiscent of AC/DC in my opinion, this has everything, the guitar riffs are sublime, and Don’s powerful vocal delivery of the lyrics just make this the standout track for me.

The album also comes with a 12-track bonus CD of classic 1979-1981 Riot tracks recut, these recordings feature the final ever recordings of Lou Kouvaris, who tragically passed away of Covid19 in early 2020.

Riot Act will be touring the UK as support to Lillian Axe in the UK throughout August 2022 – I’ll be grabbing a ticket, see you there!

Undoubtedly one of the top rock albums of 2022, at least as far as I am concerned, I will leave you to judge for yourselves. *****

EP review: THE BLOODY NERVE – Act II Reckoning

THE BLOODY NERVE - Act II Reckoning

Website [Release date 25.03.22]

Act II/episode 2 of the Bloody Nerve’s new album ‘All Blood, No Treasure’. Unlike most artists who release a new album whole, the Bloody Nerve are releasing their new album in instalments.

The Bloody Nerve revolve around Nashville based duo vocalist Laurie Ann Layne and vocalist/guitarist Stacey Blood.

Three songs, including the album’s title track, and each one brings something new to the band’s sound. The title track is an out and out rocker, pummelling the senses in under three minutes, whilst ‘Down To The Letter’ keeps the rock vibe going, albeit with a more radio friendly sound. ‘Doin’ All Day’ is a glorious mix of the duos vocals, arranged gospel style, coupled with heavy and heft guitar. Quite possibly their strongest song to date.

The Bloody Nerve do it again with three more strong songs on what is shaping up to be one of 2022’s ‘must have’ albums. ****
