Album review: JOHN ELEFANTE – The Amazing Grace

JOHN ELEFANTE - The Amazing Grace

Escape Music [Release date 22.04.22]

John Elefante is probably best known amongst rock fans for his time in Kansas in the early 80’s when he replaced Steve Walsh. After leaving Kansas he worked as a producer for Christian artists including Petra and in the early 90’s did two excellent albums with his brother Dino under the Mastedon name (well worth tracking these down for a listen). Since then he has released a series of solo albums and continued with his production work.

Now we have his latest solo album where he is joined by drummer Dan Needham, guitarists Dave Cleveland and Frank Boxberger, Eric Darken on percussion, Dave Cleveland on acoustic guitar and Chris Carmichael, who did the string arrangements.

The spirit of Kansas is never far away on the sound of some of songs, most notably ‘Little Brown Book’. On this one the riff even sounds like Kansas’s ‘Fight Fire With Fire’!

John Elefante’s music is always uplifting, either in the spiritual lyrics or the music, as is the case on ‘Stronger Now’. The backing vocals work well plus you get a George Harrison approved guitar solo, classy stuff. ‘Falling Into Place’ is another similar upbeat song, proving that he still has that distinctive vocal, which is as powerful as it ever was.

The title track brings a nice bit of pomp to the proceedings and closer ‘And When I’m Gone’ is a moving ballad, aided greatly by the piano playing of Jimmy Nichols.

An album that gets better and better after each play, as what it may lack in instant songs, instead has plenty of high quality tunes to keep the listener coming back again and again. ***1/2

Album review: SIMON McBRIDE – The Fighter

Simon McBride chatted to Pete Feenstra for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio.  First broadcast 19 June 2022.

SIMON McBRIDE - The Fighter

earMUSIC [Release date 27.05.22]

McBride was voted “Young Guitarist Of The Year” by Guitarist magazine in 1996 an accolade that can be both a blessing and a curse and has moved in and out of bands ever since.  More recently he played in “supergroup” configuration Snakecharmer whilst he has just been announced as stand-in for Steve Morse on Deep Purple’s forthcoming tour dates.  It seems he’s finally arrived.

McBride heads up a power trio and the opener ‘Don’t Dare’ (and ‘Just Takes Time’) is in the Bad Company/Free tradition of pump and grind.  ‘Show Me How To Love’ is another straightforward blues rock workout that could fit nicely into the repertoire of a Laurence Jones or an Aynsley Lister.  And then there’s Virgil McMahon flapping again around their blues to rock coat tails.

And there’s the rub, whilst this is all very polished it’s not really distinctive enough.  It’s almost as if the world has moved on since McBride cut his teeth and he needs to catch up.

Whilst there’s a lot to like here – from the groovy ‘Kingdoms’, the title track, especially the first single ‘High Stakes’ and the riffy ‘Back To You’ – there’s also the somewhat average ballad ‘Let Me Go’,  and the perfunctory ’100 Days’, ‘King Of The Hill’ and ‘Trouble.’

McBride seems to be torn between his blues rock leanings and a more straight ahead rock approach.  In truth, the best tracks here favour the latter.  Maybe he will ultimately follow the heavier approach, similar to the trajectory pursued by Kris Barras.

Of course there’s great guitar a-plenty and no doubt McBride has been influenced by fellow compatriots Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher.

Two tracks on this album appeared on each of two EPs released in 2019/20, ‘Trouble’ and ‘Show Me How To Love’.

The publicity blurb for the album is somewhat disingenuous billing this as ‘McBride’s first album’ when in fact he released ‘Rich Man Falling’ (2008),  ‘Since Then’ (2010), and ‘Crossing The Line’ (2012).  Strangely these albums appear to be erased from history as there’s no reference on his website. Perhaps he wants a fresh start?

McBride has certainly arrived but maybe a little too late to the party.  ***1/2

Album review: BLACK PEARL – Black Pearl

The prime movers and shakers of “Black Pearl” chatted together for Get Ready to ROCK! Radio as part of Pete Feenstra’s weekly show.  First broadcast 27 March 2022.

BLACK PEARL

Redline Records [Release date 22.04.22]

Lockdown has been a blessing and a curse for musicians.  For at least two years they have been deprived of live performance (and income) and even now things are a little stop start.  It only takes one member of a band or entourage to scupper a tour if they succumb to that damned virus.

But Lockdown has also helped artists gather their thoughts and songs or seek out new collaborations.  Black Pearl is one of those and includes our very own resident lyricist Pete Feenstra.  Pete’s ever widening range of contacts, not least via his regular radio interviews, has ushered in several liaisons.

Add to the mix one time Wishbone Ash guitarist Muddy Manninen, and one-time Motown signing Marcus Malone (most recently with Innes Sibun) and you have a formidable combo and new standard bearers for well crafted southern flavoured blues rock.

Opener ‘Angel Town’ sets the scene and places Malone’s world-weary vocals against Manninen’s relentless riffing.  Ditto ‘Moment Of Regret’.

‘Cheap Perfume’ and ‘Delivery Man’ have a southern rock flavour and point firmly to bands like Little Feat and the Allman Brothers.

Feenstra’s wording keeps the content sharp and full marks to Manninen’s deft arrangements.

Amongst the standouts ‘Handmade Pearl’ has a nice funky undertow and Malone’s vocal reminds a little of Sly Stone’s soulful drawl. This vibe continues with ‘Mexican Romance’ complete with a ‘Blow By Blow’ feel to Manninen’s Beck-esque breakdown.

‘Natural Light’ – and the band in general – should go down well in the live situation giving perhaps an opportunity for an extended Malone/Manninen guitar wig-out whilst the early single ‘Price On Love’ gives Robert Cray a run for his money.

This is a very competent and accessible album but a bit more light and shade might have been achieved with the judicious use of keys and an instrumental or two which could have further showed off the mainmen’s musical prowess.  ‘With My Baby By My Side’ has the seeds of such a groove.

This album should appeal to fans of both Manninen and Malone, and the extra-curricular input of a veteran blues writer, broadcaster and promoter adds a unique and welcome twist.  ***1/2

Gig review: PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

Pat McManus chatted to Get Ready to ROCK! Radio about his music.  First broadcast 3 October 2021.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

On the eve of the day when anyone with any Irish ancestry celebrates their patron saint, it was another Patrick who produced a suitable musical tribute. Pat McManus has developed a reputation as a prolific, not to say talented and entertaining, live performer, but this was as far as I know his first show (at a venue where he is a regular) in the capital since the pandemic put everything on hold.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

There had been a few changes during this interlude, including a new look with straight silvery hair and goatee beard, leading some of us to exclaim ‘great Scott’ as he bore a distinct resemblance to  Lizzy guitarist and long-time Putney resident Mr Gorham.

His power trio included a new bass player in Plunkett McComb and he had a new album to promote in ‘Full Service Resumed’, opening with a suitably apocalyptic ‘Doomsday Clock’ with its ‘No Way Out’ chorus.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

One of the factors behind my late decision to attend this show was seeing a friend post a setlist from an earlier show on the tour which included two songs from Mama’s Boys’ ‘Growing Up The Hard Way’ album, and my decision was rewarded with one such, ‘Blacklisted’, just two songs in, albeit his vocal delivery could not replicate the AOR smoothness of Keith Murrell’s original.

‘Absent Friends’ was a good example of the celtic-flavoured rock he has a unique feel for, but impressively he can play in a variety of styles, from trad blues such as on his cover of ‘King Bee’ , to a speedier, edgier and more metallic style, which supercharged one of those songs it is impossible to improve upon in ‘Crossroads’.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

I always thought his vocals were an acquired taste but they have really grown on me, full of character and distinctively Irish in a similar manner to Bob Geldof.

He paid tribute to another Irish guitar hero Rory Gallagher with a pair of songs, the wonderfully original ‘I Fall Apart’ (which oddly enough I had also seen Jim Kirkpatrick cover only last month) given an added dimension by some propulsive drum work from Paul Falloon, and the better known and more familiar blues rock of ‘Whats Goin On’.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

I never tire of hearing the old Mamas Boys classic ‘Runaway Dreams’, especially when he picks up that fiddle for a solo and it remained in use for an Irish reel-style instrumental. There was even a Mama’s Boys song I didn’t remember from their latter days, though ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ was one of the less impressive moments of the evening.

Mid-set there was quite a generous selection of new songs including the blues rock of ‘Honey Trap’, the fun ‘Bang Bang’ (though the participation line ‘big stick goes boom’ was long ago purloined by Krokus), and the vintage jamming of ‘Crystal Sky’ with Paul and Plunkett excelling themselves.

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

Earlier Pat had played a lengthy ‘The Messiah Will Come Again’, the Roy Buchanan number popularised (to my ears anyway) by Gary Moore – it reminded me of ‘Parisienne Walkways’, so it was ironic that he went on to play the latter too – joking ‘its stuck’ as he replicated that famous sustained note, and his solo matching the great man’s but with a touch of added speed.

To bring even more memories flooding back, he played his own tribute in ‘Belfast Boy’ with wonderful solos that sounded like a pastiche of some of his and Lizzy’s greatest celtic-themed moments. The atmosphere was now swinging nicely for the old Mama’s Boys favourite ‘Needle In The Groove’ (brother John was present but sadly just in the crowd, not singing).

PAT MCMANUS BAND- Half Moon, Putney, London, 16 March 2022

My friend Nigel had requested ‘Black Rose’, rightly anticipating he might play it as a St Patrick’s Eve treat,  and there is no better testament to Pat’s talent that it lacked nothing for having one guitarist rather than two on the instrumental passages. Subsequent covers of ‘Rocking in the Free World’ and ‘La Grange’ did not have the same Irish connection but the jams were a fun end to the evening, before he stayed around to chat with fans in convivial yet very humble fashion.

It was great to have Pat McManus back on the road on a night which was partly a celebration of his own body of work, and partly of the Irish rock legends that he is both a worthy successor to, and keeper of their legacy.

Album review: RONNI LE TEKRO – Bigfoot TV

Tekro Music / Rough Trade [Release date: 18.03.22]

Fast approaching 60, Oslo born guitarist, Ronni Le Tekro, ex TNT, is not for slowing down. He’s guested on some interesting albums of late, but Bigfoot TV is his first solo outing for 6 years.

It’s an album of constantly shifting currents and moods, simply refusing to be pinned down or pigeonholed.

And it’s all the better for it.

For TNT fans who lost interest when the band broke up, there’s a huge distance between then and now. Correction, the band didn’t really break up, it just stopped making albums (only one release since 2010). Which isn’t quite the same thing.

He played guitar on the two undervalued, hard rocking Vagabond albums in the 90s, and three jazz oriented, two-guitars albums, with fellow Norwegian, Terje Rypdal (who had two compositions featured in the Pacino/DeNiro Hollwood movie, “Heat”) in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The tongue in cheek titles of his most recent solo albums, Mein Ampf (2014) and Mein Ampf 2 (2015) suggested we were in for some fun. Instead what we got was a breathtaking mishmash of psychedelia, New Wave, Pop and Blues with industrial metal leanings.

Le Tekro has carried that mindset (minus the metal) into Bigfoot TV.

And it’s most notably encountered on three key songs.

The fond look back at ‘Life On Long Island’, a musical mixture of Thin Lizzy’s rock panache and Ian Dury’s storytelling bravura.

Again on ‘Handful of Time’s jump cut from Uillean pipes and Celtic rhythms to Magical Mystery Tour’s full fat psychedelic pop choruses.

And perhaps most invitingly on ‘Eyes Of The Woods’.

This closing song’s subtle Floydian textures and atmospheric, Traffic like touches are perfectly tailored for ecological protest, sixties style, providing a gloriously majestic finish to the album.

Elsewhere, ‘UFO’s Bowie/Roxy Music’s arthouse clash of ideas , and ‘Demons’ switch from mellow acoustic guitar, to a locked down bluesy groove, are just as teasing and inviting.

It’s clearly an album you’ve got to treat with TLC… and patience… but eventually it loves you back. ****

Album review: THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS – Toward The Fray

THE INFAMOUS STRINGDUSTERS – Toward The Fray

Americana Vibes/regime Music Group [Release date 25.03.22]

GRAMMY Award-winning bluegrass, folk and Americana outfit, the Infamous Stringdusters, have been making music since 2006 and ‘Toward the Fray’ is the band’s first original album since 2019’s ‘Rise Sun’.

The Infamous Stringdusters consist of Travis Brook (bass), Andy Falco (guitar), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), Andy Hall (dobro) and Chris Padolfi (banjo). Like many other releases by fellow artists they recorded this album separately, yet the overall sound still sounds like one where the band have all been jamming and recording together in the same studio. The album also marks the first time the band have used drums, utilising Mark Levy on two tracks.

Opening with ‘Hard Line’ the Infamous Stringdusters soon show why they are so revered in bluegrass and wider musical circles. Not only is their playing fast & furious, yet intricate, but they have wonderful vocal harmonies – think of the likes of Poco or Eagles.

‘I’m Not Alone’ is one of the songs to feature drums, neatly added to the mix with their light touch, adding to the banjo and fiddle sound. Again the vocals are sublime and it is easy to see why this band have won awards. The same goes for ‘I Didn’t Know’ and the fiddle playing on ‘Means To An End’ is pretty damn fine.

Those after a more traditional country fix ‘Pearl Of Carolina’ fits the bill perfectly. The instrumental ‘Revolution’ is another taking a more traditional bluegrass route.

Ignore the bluegrass & country labels if these are genres of music you would normally swerve, as this is an enjoyable album regardless of musical labelling. The Infamous Stringdusters could just well be your new favourite band you’ve yet to discover. ****

Something of a Renaissance man, Harry Chapin’s first brush with fame came in 1968 as a documentary film director. His short, “Legendary Champions” was nominated for an Oscar, and it was perhaps missing out on that award that motivated him to turn to music. It’s all well documented online.

His quickly formed band was talent-spotted while playing the New York club circuit during the ensuing two year period.

It’s hard to overestimate the impact Chapin made on the music business. Two of the leading major labels, Columbia Records and Elektra, fought it out for his signature, leading to a seven figure contract deal and a debut album being released a year later.

That album, Heads And Tails, is the first of nine albums carefully squeezed into the 6 CDs of this boxset.

As his success as a documentary film maker suggests, Chapin had a sharply observational eye for the things that we can all relate to like love, joy, anger, sadness and hurt. It was his self critical insight on the first single, ‘Taxi’, that was credited for the song’s success as a top five hit in North America.

So began a series of socially aware songs and morality tales, with each album finding popularity with his huge fanbase, if not the music critics (like, what do they know?).

Album titles like Short Stories, Portrait Gallery, Living Room Suite and Dance Band On The Titanic told their own story. There could be no doubt that by wrapping his melodies around the dramatic events of everyday life, Chapin’s music-for-grown-ups would attract a huge audience.

His albums continued to sell well. The third, Short Stories, yielded the massive wordwide hit W.O.L.D., a bittersweet song that set youthful, radio DJ dreams against a failed marriage and regrets in later life.

The fourth, Verities and Balderdash (even the seventies had problems with disinformation), was recorded almost as an afterthought while he worked on a stage musical. Despite its accelerated gestation, it provided Chapin with a 2.5 million selling album and his biggest US hit single, ‘Cat’s In The Cradle’.

Chapin continued to write and record adult pop albums that combined an emotional weight with neatly orchestrated arrangements, always barbed with wry comments and the occasional stinging metaphor. ‘The Parade’s Still Passing By’, ‘Why Should People Stay The Same’ and ‘I Wonder What Would Happen To This World’ all mark out a skilled lyricist who could mix warm sentiments with street philosophy.

Those later albums didn’t sell so well, (if you could call quarter of a million not selling well), but he clearly remained popular with his core audience.

Two years after his ninth album, Living Room Suite, Chapin was killed in collision with a Trailer Truck while driving to a benefit gig.

He died aged 39. A major loss. Another music artist whose flame burned brightly but briefly. RIP. *****

Album review: SHINING BLACK – BOALS and THORSEN – Postcards From The End Of The World

Frontiers [Release date: 18.03.22]

Shining Black’s 2020 self titled album collaboration was tuned into Hard Rock as much as it was to Melodic Metal. Guitarist, Olaf (Labyrinth, Vision Divine) Thorsen and singer, Mark (Malmsteen, Royal Hunt) Boals’ first musical marriage met with many admirers among the rock and metal demographics.

They’ve more than repeated the trick with ‘Postcards From The End Of The World’. By refining the formula, sharpening up on the songwriting and adding depth to the production, they’ve staked out a bigger chunk of fertile ground.

It isn’t destined to gatecrash the mainstream, but what we have here is an altogether bigger, braver beast, one that will attract music fans across the genres.

The opening tracks, ‘Postcards…’ and ‘Higher Than The World’ provide that initial focus. Billed as Power Metal, but both are hard rock songs, coated with a metalised sheen. And there’s never a note too many or a note out of place. Everything that’s needed – a solo, a shout, a chorus, a melody – is present and correct.

The duo consistently straddle the boundary between rock and metal, often switching horses midstream, as on ‘Time Heals They Say’ and ‘Leaves In November’.

The same goes for the vocals and the axework. Like the figurines in a Bavarian weather clock, the duo alternately take centre stage to suit the given song’s dynamics. ‘Death Angels’ and ‘Summer Solstice Under Delphi’s Sky’ capture this like hi-def pictures taken on the move.

You can almost see Thorsen stepping into the background frequently, moving up front when a riff or solo is needed, and Boals ceding ground, then taking centre stage when the song’s blueprint calls for it.

It’s a quietly sophisticated and and pleasingly stylish aggregation of rock/metal that’s been assembled here. We should hope it gets the recognition it deserves. ****

Album review: RADIOACTIVE – X.X.X

RADIOACTIVE- X.X.X

Frontiers Records (Release date 11.03.22)

Few people in the melodic rock world have as lengthy or prolific track record as Tommy Denander. While best known for playing on or producing records for a dizzying roster of artists and, for UK fans, being a fixture at Firefest as guitarist for the likes of Jimi Jamison and Mitch Malloy, he has also released his own records under the ‘Radioactive’ handle with an array of guest singers.

‘XXX’ is the first such in seven years, the first on Frontiers Records and titled to mark 30 years since the debut was recorded with most of Toto, albeit that it was only released some years later.

My first impression of the album was an unusual  in that there was a clear sound rather than genre being aimed at, specifically the albums produced by Mutt Lange(of whom more anon) in his 1979-1981 period with razor sharp guitars and big drums, before as the eighties progressed he became obsessed by technological perfection.

The AC/DC albums of the time and Def Leppard’s ‘High and Dry’ were the prime imprints, but on opener ‘Monkey on our Backs’, boasting excellent vocals from Jerome Mazza the comparison is with the rockier numbers on ‘Foreigner 4’. However on ‘The Deed is Done’, with Robin McAuley singing, the AC/DC vibe is strong and the song rather lacks melody.

The album as a whole will shock those weaned  on the smooth AOR of the first couple of Radioactive releases and on ‘Remember the Ghosts’ even Robbie Le Blanc sings in a far heavier and rawer  manner which may surprise those used to his work in Blanc Faces and Find Me and last year’s Denander- produced solo album .

‘Written in the Scars’ is the one song that has a direct line to the earlier Radioactive material, a superb ballad with a classy, soulful feel, smoothly sung by Christian Ingebrigtsen (long ago a member of hitmaking boy band A1!) with some bluesy guitar work from Tommy. ‘If Today Was Your Last Day’ is a grower with a fine chorus and a funkiness reminding me a little of Dan Reed Network and Bon Jovi-ish ‘heys’ and a big drum sound.

Tommy Denander even persuaded Mutt Lange to co-write (though not produce) a couple of songs and the arrangements and big chorus with gang vocals of the Robin McAuley-sung ‘Move It’ is pure Def Leppard, though the other, ‘I Have a Dream’ is altogether different, unpredictable and with a contemporary feel, particularly in the synth led verses.

Tommy’s speedy but melodic lead guitar work is splendidly to the fore on ‘Youmankind’ (sic), with a brilliant ending that makes you want to go back and play it again, and ‘Voodoo Queen’ with Robbie Le Blanc again unexpectedly outside his comfort zone. Both are rather AC/DC esque but in a good way.

Oddly and disappointingly the last two songs, which see two further singers brought into the mix, are a letdown. ‘Drag Me Through the Mud’ , featuring Revival Black’s Dan Byrne, is an average rocker at best and ‘California’, with veteran singer songwriter Clif Magness, is surely a pastiche of any number of DLR era Van Halen songs but without their charm.

This album was nothing like I expected with Radioactive taking a totally new direction to that which I was familiar with. It is inconsistent but as you would expect from the talent on view, when done well it really rocks.  *** 3/4

Album review: FM – Thirteen

FM-Thirteen

Frontiers Records (Release date 18.03.22)

Over a decade since reforming, FM’s run of quality product since seems to be coming at an ever faster rate, their suitably titled 13th studio album coming less than two years after its predecessor ‘Synchronised’. It continues that album’s attempt to catch the full variety of their repertoire, including bluesier and soulful influences, rather than rely solely on the big and breezy AOR choruses they are most associated with.

However it gets off to an oddly underwhelming start with ‘Shaking the Tree’ lacking a hook and with a weak chorus by their standard, despite some fine guitar work from Jim Kirkpatrick.

Fortunately the keyboard and guitar intro, combined with Steve Overland’s trademark ‘who-oah’, to ‘Waiting On Love’ is more classic FM and though the verse is a bit disjointed the chorus is pure summery AOR, while ‘Talk Is Cheap’ takes a while to flow easily but boasts a good chorus with Steve on fine vocal form.

For me ‘Turn This Car Around’ is the standout song on the album, with a distinct vibe of Bon Jovi’s ‘Blood On Blood’ and a brilliant instrumental passage with Lizzy-esque  twin guitars before Pete Jupp’s drums crash in over a keyboard break. The band tend to break new material into their set sparingly, but this is sure to be a live favourite.

Despite some traditional blues guitar work from Jim, ‘Love And War’ drifts somewhat for me , but having made such a success of their reformation and secure in a loyal fanbase, FM have nothing to prove so are able to take a few chances and step outside of a safe comfort zone. ‘Long Road Home’ is a prime example, having the lazy mellow feel of vintage 70’s American soft rock with fine piano and slide guitar work.

Likewise ‘Every Man Needs A Woman’ is very different, with a tough opening riff and the feel of a funkier and bluesier jam complete with organ from Jem Davis. It could do with a stronger chorus hook, but it works.

However ‘Be Lucky’ and ‘Just Got Started’ – in which Steve sounds more like Paul Rodgers than ever- drift along in disappointingly average fashion despite some nice touches here and there.

‘Fire With Fire’ opens with some nice twin guitar work , of which there seems to be more than on previous albums, and is a quite laid back slow burner before the album closes with ‘Stay True to Yourself’. Again there is an undercurrent of funk and soul, but despite a fine guitar solo the song is again average by their high standards.

Steve Overland’s singing is as superb as ever throughout and the playing is very good, with a greater groove and feel than before.  However the songs didn’t do it for me on the first couple of listens, being neither as direct nor well written as before and particularly in the second half some of them tread water.

Though clearly an album that grows on you after a few listens rather than an instant fix, at present it’s my least favourite FM album since reforming.  *** 3/4

Album review: THE SPIDERHAWKS- Travelling Light

THE SPIDERHAWKS- Travelling Light

Music for Sport (Release Date 25.03.22)

The Spiderhawks are the brainchild of Simon Webb who has a CV as long as your arm as a composer for TV, theatre and film. They released  a charity single during lockdown but this is the first full length album, and he has used his contacts to enlist some impressive collaborators with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and Jones Gang singer Robert Hart on all tracks and Bernie Marsden adding guitar on several of them.

However this is far from the full on blues rock album you might expect from those gentlemen and instead a broader musical canvas is drawn. Opener ‘You Can Count On Me’ is eighties pop-soul  in the mould of Go West or Level 42 with brassy sounding keyboards and a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ (the only song not written by Simon) is delivered in an, er, ‘interesting’ cod-reggae style.

‘Save Me’ is an example of where Bernie’s contribution is limited to some subtle guitar fills rather than long solos, while Robert’s gravel voice is prominent on ‘Lately’, though on other songs it doesn’t sound particularly like him.

‘She’s Waiting’ is easily the best song, starting gently but building  in dramatic fashion with Robert’s passionate vocals, and reminded me of John Miles and other orchestrated seventies sounds.

Some of the songs, for example the Springsteen esque ‘Lullabye’ are deceptively low-key and simple, yet the arrangements are thoughtful as you would expect from someone of Simon Webb’s background and decently produced with each instrument clearly audible.

‘Take Me Back’ adds sax and clarinet into the mix while ‘Foundation’ mixes some world music influences, not unlike Robert’s day job in the Earth Band, with Bernie’s longest solo by some distance.

It’s far from an essential purchase, except for diehard collectors of some of the big names featured, but an enjoyable listen and the songs have a beguiling charm to them. ***  1/2

What Magnum Means To Me…

Magnum - The "Chompies"

As part of our month long promotion “Magnum Month @GRTR!” in March 2022 we invited fan recollections and stories.  Some have followed the band since the mid-1980s whilst others will have come on board for their later iterations.

Whatever, there is continuity in all the contributions, reflecting the impact of the band in their lives.

The favourite track choices frequently reflect that period of the band’s history when fans first came into contact with their music.

Thank you to all who contributed, we list a selection here.

I became aware of Magnum back in 1985 aged 12 when a boy at school gave a tape of a record he’d taped for me (kind of got my attention to him! LOL) and after a listen I was hooked. I then got all the back albums, current albums and went to various gigs. I remember telling my parents I was off to friends house for the weekend but in fact we were off to see Magnum play. We were 15 then!!Over the years the music of Magnum have helped me through many tough periods such as divorce, illness and the loss of loved ones but equally its helped me rejoice over achievements, love and its my go to music to sing in the shower!!

I’m very lucky to have met the band several times due to the generosity of Tony’s daughter Dionne whom I’ve been lucky to become friends with.

The power of Tony’s lyrics and Bob’s voice melt every situation good or bad. Like wine, they have matured with age – each album giving more and more. I cant imagine my life without their music to turn to when I need it.

Here you have a true fan who will always be a fan. I can’t wait for this tour and to see them doing what they do the greatest.

Favourite tracks:
1.  Lost On The Road To Eternity
2.  Lonely Night
3.  The Last Dance
4.  Wild Swan
5.  Black Tattoo

Magnum - The Eleventh Hour (Tour Programme)

My introduction to Magnum was hearing the ‘Back To Earth’ single being played in Way Ahead Records in Nottingham. Then I heard ‘Chase The Dragon’ and was totally memorised with the sound and imagery. My first gig was on ‘The Eleventh Hour’ Tour at Rock City where I got to meet Colin ‘Wally’ Lowe….this was the first of too many Magnum gigs to mention.Like thousands of others, Magnum have provided the soundtrack to my life, good times and bad times and are one of the few bands that truly engage with their fans!

Jes Woodland

Favourite tracks:
Back To Earth
The Spirit
Les Mort Dansant
Black Skies
Lost On The Road To Eternity

Magnum - Goodnight LA (Tour Programme)

Bob Catley sitting on the edge of the stage at Newport 1992/1993 on the Goodnight LA tour. Talking in between songs with a voice that sang as he spoke, hundreds of Magnum and other rock band black T shirts, cheering and singing every word.Tony’s new bald head and goatee unassumingly playing guitar on so many brilliant tracks that he wrote.Nick Gillott

Favourite tracks:
Need A Lot Of Love
Just Like An Arrow
Start Talking Love
Days Of No Trust

Magnum fan - Tracey Dean

I’ve been a crazy Magnum fan since I was 13.  I’m still crazy about them. I first heard them when a friend’s new boyfriend played me ‘Foolish Heart’ and I was hooked.I’ve travelled around for years seeing them at least once to three times on every
tour .

I’ve had the pleasure to meet them many times over the years and made many great friends – “chompies“. One show which was magical to me was the Town Hall (Birmingham) Christmas 1992 gig – it snowed and it was my birthday – who could wish for more?

2. Midnight (You Won’t Be Sleeping)
3. Vigilante
4. Just Like An Arrow
5. Welcome All You Young And Precious Souls

Magnum - Sleepwalking (Cover by Rodney Matthews)

My introduction to the band came in the autumn of 1992. I had just started my first year at catering college, which involved working one evening a week in the training restaurant that was open to the public.Stuart, our lecturer for front of house restaurant service, was a big music fan and worked with the band in some capacity during the ’80s.To keep us students entertained and motivated as we prepped the restaurant (usually one of our classrooms) for the evening, he would bring in a stack of CDs from his personal collection. These were mostly rock, but a fair amount of blues and folk too.

One of his favourite bands were Magnum and one evening we were introduced to the recently released Sleepwalking album.

I loved the sound and the singer’s voice instantly, but what happened next was the real start of my long-term love affair/obsession with the band.

Clearly delighted at hearing lots of positive feedback from us students (me included), Stuart announced at the end of a lecture a few weeks later that he had bought half a dozen tickets to see Magnum at the Cambridge Junction that Christmas.

I immediately claimed one of them and looked forward to the gig, even though I don’t think we listened to the album again between then and the show. When the day of the concert arrived, I awoke to a mixture of excitement and pain.

My throat felt like I’d swallowed razorblades and a visit to the local doctor confirmed my worst fears, I’d come down with tonsillitis. I was determined I wouldn’t miss the show, however, and told my parents that I felt much better than I actually did and they allowed me to go.

I have hazy, pain killer-numbed memories of the show, but can still vividly remember the band emerging through the smoke-filled stage and launching into The Flood. To say it blew me away would be a huge understatement and thoughts of that evening (only my second ever gig) still fills me with warmth and fuzzy nostalgia.

That Christmas, I was mostly confined to bed, but Sleepwalking (a Christmas present and my first ever Compact Disc) and a copy of The Wings of Heaven video that I borrowed from Stuart got me through it.

There was also a TV screening of The Tube Christmas Special, which featured the band performing Vigilante on the Portmeirion-based set of The Prisoner, which felt like a serendipitous sign.

The band’s music became a firm fixture on my CD player during the rest of my time at college and my college buddy, Dan, also succumbed to their charms and joined the Magnum army.

It’s fair to say that the band (and Stuart) instigated the full-blown music obsession that followed, and I’ve since seen the band more times than I can remember and own every album on CD and vinyl (except for Rock Art, which is the only Magnum album never to be pressed on vinyl).

I also had the pleasure of marketing a number of the band’s CD reissues in the mid-00s when I worked at Sanctuary Records and wrote the sleevenotes for the reissue of Tony and Bob’s debut Hard Rain album, which gave me the opportunity to meet Bob and to speak with Tony over the phone.

Christmas now always makes me think of the Sleepwalking album and The Flood remains my favourite Magnum song. When I saw the band perform the track live again in 2012 (almost 20-years after that first encounter), I almost wept with joy.

If I could have it my way, I’d demand a new studio album every year, such is the quality of the songs that have been written since they re-grouped in 2002, but one every other year isn’t too bad, I suppose.

Congratulations to Tony and Bob on the 50th anniversary of the band and long may they continue to entertain us.

Magnum - On A Storyteller's Night (Tour Programme)

I first became aware of Magnum as a teenager around the time of the release of On A Storyteller’s Night in 1985.  I heard the single Just Like An Arrow, which I loved and then recall hearing the title track on Tommy Vance’s Friday Rock Show.It blew me away – that trademark combination of melody, powerful musicianship and evocative imagery that characterised the band and made them so difficult to pigeonhole.

From then I searched back into the previous albums and cheered them through their commercial success in the late 80s/early 90s. I lost touch with Magnum when I went to university around the time of Sleepwalking as my music tastes broadened and the band’s brand of melodic rock seemed to become increasingly incompatible with the grunge and Britpop-obsessed 90s.

But I never lost my connection with a band that had meant so much to me at a time when I was discovering music. Their return to form in the last decade and a half has been a joy to witness and some of my favourite Magnum tracks come from albums like The Visitation, Escape From The Shadow Garden and Lost On The Road To Eternity.

Album review: DARE – Road To Eden

Darren Wharton chatted to Get Ready to ROCK! Radio about his career and Dare. The interview includes tracks from each of Dare’s studio albums including the latest.  First broadcast 10 April 2022.

DARE- Road to Eden

Legend Records [Release date 01.04.22]

Back in the late eighties and early nineties, Dare – fronted by Thin Lizzy keyboard player Darren Wharton and with the nation’s favourite scientist Brian Cox an early member – threatened to hit the big time with their AOR tastic debut ‘Out Of The Silence’ and the controversial heavier second  ‘Blood From Stone’.

That they fell apart without realising that potential was a big disappointment to fans, myself included, but Darren Wharton resumed the band, albeit pursuing a mellower sound influenced by traditional celtic music. The new direction had its fans, but for me things weren’t the same.

But since reuniting with guitarist Vinny Burns, as well as bassist Nigel Clutterbuck, both their most recent new album ‘Sacred Ground’ (back in 2016!) and live performances hinted at a return to vintage Dare. ‘Road To Eden’ opens in superb fashion with ‘Born In The Storm’ and releasing it as the lead off single makes a real statement as it boasts a strong riff and vintage solo from Vinny Burns and is pitched in musical terms somewhere between the first two albums.

Actually it is easily the rockiest number on show and ‘Cradle To The Grave’ is more mid tempo with a very celtic backing even in the guitar solo while the tastefulness of the guitar melodies carry ‘Fire Never Fades’ . The title track is a piano led, mid paced anthem with that celtic touch and ‘Lovers And Friends’ a ballad.

They may be mellow listening, but there is something warm and comforting about Darren’s whispered tones, which have not changed a jot throughout his career, and are quite like nothing else in the melodic rock world.

He is also king of the ‘bromance’ and ‘Only The Good Die Young’, possibly directed at the memory of Phil Lynott and/or Gary Moore with its atmospheric piano and a Springsteen esque, anthemic feel is probably my favourite on the album. ‘Grace’ is another mid tempo  one with bagpipes adding to the celtic feel and ‘I Always Will’ could have sat comfortably on ‘Out Of The Silence’.

The final two tracks ‘The Devil Rides Tonight’ and ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ both begin gently and wind up as rockers  with Vinny let off the leash somewhat after playing with tasteful restraint for much of the album.

Though it would be unreasonable to expect a full return to their original style, this nice blend of classic and newer Dare is a perfect representation of where they are in 2022, setting them up nicely for the extensive autumn tour which will hopefully bring their profile back up to where it should be.  **** 1/4

Album review: PATTERN-SEEKING ANIMALS – Only Passing Through

PATTERN-SEEKING ANIMALS – Only Passing Through

InsideOut Music [Release date 01.04.22]

Pattern-Seeking Animals consists of current and former Spock’s Beard members Ted Leonard, Jimmy Keegan and Dave Meros in addition to long-time contributing songwriter-producer John Boegehold. ‘Only Passing Through’ is the band’s third album and again is of a high standard, a mix of the band’s love of a short, catchy songs and longer, more involved epics.

‘Rock Paper Scissors’ was released as a lead track and it sees the band recalling childhoods of the past. Surprisingly not the most instant song on the album, that honour falls to ‘Just Another Day At The Beach’. As its title suggests is one for a summery day, driven by the rock steady bass of Dave Meros and a bright chorus, instant candy on the ears.

The mellow refrain of ‘Here With You With Me’ allows the band to highlight their vocal harmonies, on a musical backing that recalls the 70s output from the likes of Yes and Kansas. Eight minutes of musical wonder. Speaking of Kansas, listening to ‘I’m Not Alright’ you’d think it was Steve Walsh in full vocal flight. Even the keys and guitar have a distinct Kansas feel about them.

The musical arrangements on a Pattern-Seeking Animals album are always an aural treat, with the closing epic ‘Time Has A Way’ a fine example. It certainly stands up to repeated listens as each subsequent listen reveals another piece in the musical puzzle, be it a little trumpet or congas.

Another wonderful album from Pattern-Seeking Animals to enjoy. They just keep getting better and better and well worth a listen if you’ve yet to try them. ****

Gig review: THE PORTRAITS & DOM PRAG, Harwell Village Hall, Friday 18 March 2022

Another lovely little venue literally on my doorstep, where Big Ginger Tom Music have been putting on monthly folk themed gigs for a few years now. Of course the pandemic brought a halt to these, but credit to the husband and wife team behind Big Ginger Tom Music as they continue to put on gigs here and have a roster of artists they book for shows over the UK. Along with the artists, venues and fans, the promoters are a vital part of the live music scene and should be recognised more for the sterling work they do.

Right, soapbox away and onto the music where up and coming folk artists Dom Prag started the evening off with a very enjoyable set of traditional folk tunes, plus a couple of his own songs from his recently released album ‘Needle & Thread’.

DOM PRAG – Needle & Thread

Opening with his own reworking of ‘Van Dieman’s Land’, it soon becomes apparent what joy he is getting from performing live again. His between song anecdotes and explanations of each song’s subject give the evening more sparkle and value. Dom Prag is a superb guitarist and mesmerising to watch as he creates wondrous melodies from the strings, as his rendition of ‘Lovely William’ showed.

His own song ‘The Shoemender’ is well received by the audience as its subject matter about the dying retail centre of a typical town rings true wherever you live.

A deserved encore saw him sing his favourite song, the Richard Thompson classic ‘1952 Black Vincent Lightning‘. An artist who Dom Prag certainly takes after in his guitar playing and dexterity.

Fleet of finger, fine in voice, Dom Prag proved that folk music is alive and well, and in good hands.

THE PORTRAITS - For Our Times

The Portraits are husband and wife duo Jeremy & Lorraine, who have been making music under the Portraits name since 2006 and GRTR!’s Pete Whalley is a fan, having favourably reviewed a couple of their earlier releases.

Joined by French violinist Vincent Imbert, the Portraits played a set of songs, that whilst tackling at times difficult and emotional subjects, their songwriting and melodies always gave an air of hope and joy in hearing the music.

Playing two sets – as they and the audience need an interval for liquid refreshment and to help swell the coffers to keep these gig nights going – highlights came thick and fast. Personal highlights included ‘Monochrome’, ‘Penniless Porch’ – which has an interesting back story and is a place in Wells, the couple’s current home town.

On ‘The Cloud’ they tackled depression and mental health, possibly not typical folk song topics but certainly current and skilfully done. ‘Harmonise’ as the title suggests relied on harmony, whilst ‘The Rest Of Time’ was given a heartfelt performance.

The Portraits rounded off their second set with a cover of Phil Oakey and Giorgio Moroder’s hit ‘Together In Electric Dreams’. For this they added a pre-recorded vocal from their daughter, who wasn’t able to join them for this gig, plus choral parts used in their original version which made the UK singles charts. They were worried it might not work but it did.

Two talented acts and what a joy to be back witnessing and enjoying live music again. It is one thing we mustn’t take for granted as the world of music and arts needs our support more than ever in these challenging times.

Album review: RONNIE ATKINS – Make It Count

Frontiers [release date: 18.03.22]

When Denmark’s Paul Christensen founded the Pretty Maids with Ken Hammer, he changed his name to Ronnie Atkins. And this despite assurances that his birth name sounded pretty cool.

None of this matters now, he lives on borrowed time, and is using it to create some of the best rock’n'roll of his career.
Like 2021′s One Shot, his first post-diagnosis album, Make It Count is reflective and thoughtful, and occasionally angry. It’s also very melodic, and is exquisitely crafted by producer, Chris Laney.

Pocket sized polemics, ‘Rising Tide’ and ‘Blood Cries Out’ are worthy of early mention. Each one, charged with electrifying currents of emotion, sees Atkins grapple with subjects that work hard to wriggle out of reach, but he holds fast. The subject matter is clearly signalled by the song titles.

‘I’ve Hurt Myself’, slick AOR mixed with pop; ‘Unsung Heroes’, a salute to the real heroes of the Covid years, and the powerful title track are massive pieces of composition and production, each painted on to its own unique canvas by Laney’s grand production. At times they seem like key songs beamed down from the AOR genre’s eighties heyday, flushed with success and ready for more.

The insightful, beautifully balladic ‘Remain to Remind’ is a simple song, sturdily tuneful, magnified by Laney’s kitchen sink production. It pairs neatly with the simpler, more subdued ballad, ‘Let Love Live’. The title is self explanatory. It’s a ballad that could be worked up into a showstopper in any other conditions, but Laney and Atkins keep it cool, focusing on the song’s illustrative lyrics. It’s initially underwhelming, but soon becomes sublimely exhilarating. Less is more.

Elsewhere, we might find the totality of Laney’s richly textured, detailed arrangements a bit much to take in one sitting. But we’ll enjoy coming back for more. ****

Album review: VON HERTZEN BROTHERS – Red Alert In The Blue Forest

Von Hertzen Brothers - Red Alert In The Blue Forest

Doing Being Music [Release date: 18.03.22]

Described by the 3 Von Hertzen Brothers – Kie, Mikko and Jonne – as 70 minutes of art rock, ‘Red Alert In The Blue Forest is a concept album written separately by all 3 brothers during lockdown and then brought together under an overarching eco-concept.

It’s music with a film soundtrack feel, forged by a gigantic layered sound, contrasting quieter moments and is variously coloured by hard booming rock to electro beats.

It’s an album that works hard not to suffocate under its own weight, as it tackles big themes such as mankind’s impending destruction. This makes for some heavy rock and startling dynamics, which are frequently offset by more intricate percussion and occasional acoustic interludes.

The opening ‘Day of Reckoning’ is an excellent template of what to expect, with a  Jon Anderson style falsetto (think Yes’s ‘Close To The Edge’) and anchored by a Chris Squire style rumbling bass.

It’s all breathlessly resolved by a repeated uplifting line; “In this universe,” while ‘Blue Forest’ further sets out the theme of:  “the wonders of life, why did we leave them to die.”

The brothers have the ability to switch genres without losing their won DNA, as on ‘The Promise’, which incorporates a Celtic feel with a big chant that could be 80’s Tull.

And in so briskly skipping genres and further exploring ‘quiet-to-loud’ dramatic moments, they build an impressive undertow that gives the album its propulsive drive.

The very catchy ‘All Of A Sudden Your Gone’ is a notable highlight , being a catchy harmony laden melody with a plaintive Pye Hastings (Caravan) style vocal, until a trademark gut-busting rush of adrenalin topped by another Jon Anderson style falsetto on a climactic finish.

The Pye Hastings vocal style re-appears much later on the reflective, acoustic ‘Söderskär’. Sitting deep into the album, it’s a meditative piece about a Finnish lighthouse in the outer archipelago of Porvoo, a location that sparks more imaginative lyrics.

The Yes style vocal blocks also play a significant role in on the muscular structure of ‘Elbows,’ a track on which the rather mundane lyrics fail to match the musical bombast.

‘Red Alert In The Blue Forest’ pulls the listener from pillar to post as it explores related rock styles and reaches a high point on the evocative ‘Northern Lights’.

They are in their element on this eerie synth layered piece, delivered over gentle percussive brush strokes as they capture the wonders of the aurora, as it shifts from the barely perceptible to the luminescent.

The big vocal sweep is the defining layer of an exhilarating track which succinctly captures the bands muscular oeuvre, before the narrator comes to the front of the mix over a chiming keyboard motif.

They say you should sing about what you know, and the Von Herzen Brothers do exactly that here, before anther explosive cascade of sound.

The album moves from prog to power metal, symphonic rock and back to folk and electro beats, as the brothers spread their musical net far and wide to evoke lyrical intent through unfettered bluster.

All the more curious then that the snappy intro to ‘Peace Patrol’ comes perilously close to synth pop, before an inevitable wall of sound swamps the track and lifts it to anthemic heights.

A wailing, gritty sax solo and outrageous OTT guitar break suggests a band who don’t do things by half, as they push all the molecules god gave them into an avalanche of awe inspiring sound.

The subsequent Theramin sounding intro to ‘Pirates of the Raseborgian’ ushers in a welcome lighter jaunty piece, flecked by synth noodles, double tracked vocals and a sing-along chorus, which tries hard to rescue a lightweight track.

In contrast, ‘Anil’ is outstanding. It benefits from a gently voiced acoustic intro and another Pye Hastings plaintive vocal on a beautifully crafted piece. The arrangement neatly mirrors the sunny lyrics and gives the album some welcome breathing space.

They round off an inspiring opus with the accordion, acoustic and flute-led ‘Disappear There’

There’s so much to digest here. It took me three listens to trigger all the musical connections, reflecting the fact its an album that demands focus and patience, something prog rock fans alone surely expect when approaching such a significant album as this ****

‘Infinite Hotel’ is the perfect title for an album that searches both lyrically and musically for a place beyond.

Built round the concept of the human species moving from planet to planet, or in this case through infinite hotel rooms, it’s not quite a metaphysical album, but rather 12 songs that search beyond the normal realms to uncover meditations on love and loss with plenty of reflection, and as on a parallel project of his, The Mustangs ‘Watertown’, an ecological theme.

It’s a well crafted album on which Adam Norsworthy cleverly disguises the limits of his vocal range by adhering to the values of restraint and evocative phrasing. His lyrical mysticism is also coated in an enveloping sound.

His delicately composed songs are infused with lyrical depth and musical fluidity. The album strikes an equilibrium with his special guests Oli Brown (bass, guitar), Bennett Holland (keyboards), Rich Young (piano) and Wayne Proctor (production/drums). whose collective intuitive playing abilities amplify Norsworthy’s feel driven approach.

There’s a mellifluous flow throughout the album, starting with the riff-led urgency of the thematic opener ‘Bridges To The Moon’, which includes the first of 2 celebratory ‘woo-hoo’ refrains on the album to suggest the big getaway: “Another trillion dollars, for everybody’s pocket, to build a deadly rocket, what are we waiting for here.”

Then there the wistful, almost waltz like quality of ‘In Time I Will Forget You’ and the atmospheric 80’s sounding ‘Rise With You’ – complete with producer/ drummer Wayne Proctor’s Chester Thomson style drum breaks – to the gentle paced bookend of ‘Bullet Proof Man’.

The latter is similar to ‘I May Not Be Here In The Morning’, as it opens with a Harry Chapin tenor style phrasing before settling on a whispered approach.

The featherlight balance between Norsworthy’s colourful lyrics and his expansive music is best evidenced on the almost ghostly ‘Meet Me At Midnight’, which features a pulsing harmonium sound over a subtle drums.

And when he hits the defining line; “meet me at midnight when the moon in high,” he pushes himself to the limit of his range and sounds like an emotional David Bowie. It’s an influence that bubbles up again on the opening lines of ‘Jericho’.

‘Infinite Hotel’ revels in subtle grooves, especially on the guitar, funky keyboard and electric Fender Rhodes sound of ‘Turn Your Love Around’, while the two succinct guitar solos tell us all we need to know about an artist serving the song.

‘Infinite Hotel’ benefits from a consistent layered sound with a plenty of variety, as on the acoustic-into-electric ‘Lost In The Cinema’  the funky electronic feel and punchy hook of the post- punky ‘Now I’ve Got Your Love’ and the atmospheric ‘Rise With You.’

It’s a colourful musical palate that help illuminates his aching heartfelt lyrics, as on the cinematic (pun intended)  ‘Lost in the Cinema’, a tale of a tentative big screen back seat lover: “As we sit here in the darkness, Not knowing what these characters will do, I’m nervous as a child,  lost in the cinema with you.”

He’s wistful and reflective on ‘In Time I Will Forget You’, a song that opens with a very Aynsley Lister sounding guitar figure.

My only reservation is that by the slightly worn out concept of Jericho’ the albums mid-paced feel begins to drag a little, a fact he may have tried to counterweight with this slightly jaunty track and its belated guitar solo.

He finishes with ‘Bullet Proof Man’ a song that is in sharp thematic contrast to what’s gone before and is about a lack of emotional engagement.

‘Infinite Hotel’, isn’t an easy album to categorize, save for its weighty themes and singer songwriter antecedents. Happily the songs are strong enough to overcome any genre restrictions as he confidently strides over rock, pop, blues, funk, and folk influences.

His crossover style brings out the best in his esteemed musical guests who provide enough sizzle to make this excellent album stand out in a busy market place. ****

Gig review: HALESTORM – Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

Halestorm have put in the hard yards of touring the UK for over a decade to become a major draw in their own right. This love affair with the country was demonstrated when, in spite of pulling the rest of their European tour owing to Covid restrictions they kept the extensive UK leg, becoming one of the few American bands still to have crossed the pond since the pandemic.

Tickets sold like hot cakes for the London show at Shepherds Bush Empire given that their last two London headlines had been at the significantly larger Brixton Academy and Alexandra Palace. The format of the shows was ‘An Evening with’, with one acoustic and one more conventionally electric set.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

In doing so they followed in the footsteps of Black Stone Cherry, with whom they have much in common in terms of work ethic and musical style, when they played here in similar fashion a few years back. As on that occasion the stalls looked uncomfortably crowded and though I usually prefer to be in the thick of the action made a wise decision to buy in the seated balconies.

The first set began with frontwoman Lzzy Hale taking to the stage in pigtails and nineties indie girl style of dress and boots, with only a piano for company and as she belted out ‘Break In’, ‘Dear Daughter’, and an altogether shorter ‘Raise Your Horns’  in raw and confessional fashion I was drawing unlikely comparisons with Beth Hart. She also made a touching speech about the support and encouragement her parents had given her and drummer brother Arejay in following their youthful dreams.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

Hirsute guitarist Joe Hottinger then joined her for first album ballad ‘Familiar Taste of Poison’ with the rest of the band (completed by stylishly low-key bassist Josh Smith) coming in halfway through. One of Lzzy’s signature songs in ‘Ms Hyde’ had people punching the air despite the acoustic fashion. Nevertheless opinion was more divided as Arejay reeled off a series of so-bad-they’re-good  one liners in rapid fire fashion familiar to us fans of Tim Vine, except these ‘dad jokes’  were told by a Pennsylvania punk rather than a Surrey public schoolboy.

The band have been well known over the years for an eclectic range of covers and though their own material takes precedence these days, they have apparently been playing a cover associated with the home city on each night of the tour. In this case The Clash’s ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’ went down well,  while though I was surprised they did not save ‘Apocalyptic’ and ‘I Like it Heavy’ for the main set, in reality there was not too much difference in a semi plugged in format with only electric guitars missing.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

After the interval they returned with Lzzy in more familiar black leather and a stage and lighting show worthy of larger venues. They  opened with one of the songs they released in the pandemic ahead of their new album – ‘Back From The Dead’ which continued in the heavier direction they have been going in.

Though the promotional blurb for the tour that they would be playing deep cuts and fan favourites was a little exaggerated, ‘Rock Show’ nevertheless made a welcome return to the set as did the old set closer ‘I Get Off’ from the first album with again much air punching to the chorus.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

‘I Am The Fire’ saw both Lzzy and Joe donning 12 string guitars for a powerful anthem while ‘Amen’ took the set to new heights of excellence both with the audience participation then turning into a lengthy jam with Joe let off the leash and he and Lzzy trading guitar solos.

‘Do Not Disturb’, and later ‘Uncomfortable’- with a riff reminding me of Queen’s ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ – showed their more recent heavier direction but I baulked at another new one in ‘Bombshell’ which was too brutally metallic for my tastes.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

After Arejay’s drum solo – those baseball bats used for drumsticks still raise a smile though by rights we should be tired of them by now – ‘Freak Like Me’ had the crowd bouncing , none more so than a girl a couple of rows in front of me with her parents who could not have been more than eight or nine years old, then another new song in ‘Steeple’ showed both sides of Halestorm at their best – uncompromisingly heavy and yet its ‘this is my church, you are my people’ lyric tailor-made for crowd participation- before the set came to an end rather abruptly.

The encore kicked off with end of tour festivities to thank departing staff and celebrate crew members birthdays prior to ‘Here’s To Us’ seeing beer cans and devil horns waved, before its aggressive ‘Slave To The Grind’-like intro reminded me I had momentarily forgotten about ‘Love Bites (‘So Do I’), followed by another heavy moment in ‘Black Vultures’.

HALESTORM- Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 13 March 2022

As has been the case on recent tours, ‘I Miss The Misery’ was the set closer, introduced by a big scream from Lzzy. Another great anthem has gradually transformed into a big set piece, now weighing in at 12 minutes, with an epic solo from Joe building the foundation for an extended outro with the band pulling poses and engaging the audience.

It was a fitting end to a special gig, in which the generous length of the twin setlists allowed Halestorm to show their many sides and cement the unique bond they seem to have with their UK fans.

Magnum in the Millennium

Since the late 1990s the number of physical singles released by Magnum – and indeed many artists – has diminished, with the emphasis on digital.

Historically the rarest single is their debut for CBS in 1975, a cover of ‘Sweets For My Sweet’.  The A-side features Dave Morgan (bass) on lead vocals although it’s really the B-side that will interest fans.  ‘Movin’ On’ is the band’s first original song to be released and features Bob Catley on lead vocals.

Both tracks were included on the expanded version of “Kingdom Of Madness” (Sanctuary, 2005)

Album review: SHEWOLF – SheWolf

Frontiers [Release date: 18.03.22]

Aiming to climb the Power Metal mountain, SheWolf release their self titled debut album this month.

Led by stunning Greek vocalist, Angel Wolf-Black, the band, The Hunter (guitars), The Predator (bass) and Alpha (drummer) might sound like a bunch of characters from a Hollywood movie franchise, but in fact the band’s music is steeped in Greek mythology.

Specifically, “The Gathering Of The Wolves”, linked to the goddess, Selene, who kicked major ass (allegedly).

It’s billed as Power Metal, but there are elements of Prog and Folk swirling around in the music’s DNA, it’s a shape shifting sound that’s impossible to pin down.

In between the overlapping genres, as on ‘The One You Feed’ and ‘Safe In The Dark, you will hear flutes and folklore merging with a classy Nightwish influence. And further on, the majestic song structures and forceful melodies of ‘Nothing Is Forever’ and ‘The Thrill Of The Chase’ suggest the band and writers listened to a lot of Within Temptation during their formative years.

That’s largely down to producer/writers Michele Guiatoli and Marco Pastorino, who have created an immersive, sometimes familiar, listening experience.

‘Home’ and ‘Lone Wolf’ are the biggies. Lyrically, the first is grounded in the real world. It’s full of sadness and alienation. The song’s music understands and conveys these sentiments. As a Greek citizen stranded in the UK during Pandemic lockdowns, Wolf-Black had reason to feel homesick, and she’s expressed her emotions in the words of this standout song.

The second, ‘Lone Wolf’, a Euro-Metal Battle Hymn, is best listened to while watching the video that accompanied the single release. The band may look like extras from “Wrong Turn”, but the music they’re delivering … melodic and majestic … swoops and soars around Wolf-Black’s powerful vocals. Her resilient mezzo soprano easily copes with the song’s musical range and indeed her singing seems effortless.

As with so many metal albums, once you get beyond the mythological elements you’re able to see the real band. This one looks good, and worth watching. ***1/2

LIFESIGNS Altitude (Lifesigns Music)

Fans of the likes of Marillion, Genesis and Camel will find much to enjoy here – fans of the more challenging end of the prog spectrum should probably look elsewhere.  *****

SAXON - Carpe Diem

SAXON Carpe Diem (Silver Lining Music)

Saxon are at the top of their game with a “bollocks to Covid” work ethic to boot. ****1/2

Eric Gales - Crown

ERIC GALES Crown (Provogue)

It also eclipses 2019’s acclaimed ‘The Book Ends’, being more song-driven, coherent and focused, while vindicating his decision to hook up with the Joe Bonamassa/Josh Smith guitar playing production team who know his strengths.

The result is a five star success. *****

Review by Pete Feenstra

MARILLION - An Hour Before It's Dark

MARILLION An Hour Before It’s Dark (earMUSIC)

The overall vibe is closer to 2012′s ‘Sounds That Can’t Be Made’ than ‘F.E.A.R.’ and maybe all the better for that, at least for this listener.  Still relevant but without the ranting and – it has to be said – the rambling.

Full of lusciousness and loveliness, this is Marillion at their very best.  *****

Review by David Randall

FIND ME Lightning In A Bottle (Frontiers)

The album is brimful of heartstopping hooks, vertiginous choruses, sparkling guitar and keyboard work. The music is sleek, athletic and light on is feet, with just enough framework constructed around each gorgeous melody to carry it home. But most of all it’s about Blanc’s wonderfully expressive vocals.

…In all honesty, it doesn’t get much better than this. ****1/2

Review by Brian McGowan

 GHOST Impera (Loma Vista)

…this is the best Ghost album to date, no question. With the band imagery some have found it hard to take Ghost as a serious entity, but this album should silence those doubters. The band have made the rise to headlining arenas around the world and this is the perfect soundtrack to accompany that move. The Devil really does have all the best tunes!  *****

Album review: CIRCLE OF FRIENDS – The Garden

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS - The Garden

Escape Records [Release date 25.03.22]

‘The Garden’ is the album put together by Bruce Mee (of Fireworks magazine) as a tribute to his mother, who died of cancer in 2020. The studio project is called Circle of Friends because the majority of the singers appearing on the album are personal friends of Bruce and Khalil Turk (Escape Music), and were all willing to help bring album concept to life.

The album has thirteen tracks, of which four are covers, with the remaining nine songs mostly written by Mikael Rosengren and his co-writers. Jaime Kyle brings her own song ‘Take My Love To Heart’ to the album.

The line-up of singers is very impressive including Doro, Jeff Scott Soto, Robin Beck, Darby Mills, James Christian, Robin McAuley and Kevin Chalfant on backing vocals. Musician wise the line-up is equally impressive as it includes Whitesnake’s Joel Hoekstra, MSG’s Steve Mann, Tommy Denander, Eric Ragno and Steve Morris (Heartland, Ian Gillan).

Often an album with a number of guest singers can lack any overall cohesion, not so here, aided perhaps by the fact there is one main songwriter involved. Hard to pick out highlights from the originals as they are all classy melodic hard rock. However, Jeff Scott Soto is up to his usual high standard on ‘Bad Blood’, Jamie Kyle nails her own song ‘Take Love To My Heart’, the Metal Queen Doro on ‘Little Piece Of Heaven’ and Darby Mills on ‘Trick Of The Light’. Pretty darn fine guitar solo on the latter song too.

The cover versions are an interesting bunch. Blondie’s ‘11:59’ sung by Ellinor Asp, is a novel choice avoiding the obvious Blondie classics. Robin Beck is on top form on Abba’s ‘Knowing Me, Knowing You’, with her husband James Christian on backing vocals. Love this song but a vision of Alan Partridge always appears in my mind whenever I hear this song…

Kudos for attempting the Blue Oyster Cult classic ‘Don’t Fear the Reaper’, which is given a new intro & outro and Robin McAuley was a good choice to tackle this one. The little known Fierce Heart song ‘Never Gonna Make Me Cry’ is a proper ‘wow’ moment, helped greatly by James Christian’s vocal performance.

What a fitting tribute to his mother and a credit to all involved. One of the best melodic rock albums you’ll hear this year. ****

Album review: PHARMACOSE – Prescription Fiction

Pharmacose - Prescription Fiction

Indie [Release date 22.02.22]

Rock is a genre that holds the key to so many subgenres. The umbrella term for so many artists, it may seem too broad a word. But sometimes we really do just need the reliability of some classic Alt-Rock to get us through the bad days and externalise what’s going on in our heads. Look no further than Pharmacose. With this band, what you see is what you get, and their album Prescription Fiction (originally released as two EP’s) might just be what the doctor ordered. In a world where the importance of our mental health and the stigmatisation of mental illness is becoming rightfully understood, musicians that spread a message of honesty are evermore necessary.

Singer and rhythm guitarist Wes Jones started the band with Lu Rubino (bassist – and a seasoned one at that, having shared the stage with the likes of Paramore) under the name Digital Array in 2017, the rest of the current ensemble completed later with drummer Albert Cruz and lead guitarist Kevin Horne. Together, the band create a sound peppered with the influences of the modern rock age. Think Green Day or Stone Temple Pilots.

The album takes listeners on a journey through frontman Wes Jones’ own experiences with bipolar disorder and medication, as well as talking more generally about feelings that everyone can relate to. These themes drive this album forward, the lyrics, artwork and aesthetic also complimented by Jones’ own experience as a practicing medical doctor. These kinds of discussions can be hard pills to swallow (pun unintended); Prescription Fiction may help those seeking solace in the knowledge they aren’t alone, but with the warm embrace of a familiar genre. Even more importantly, it could reach those that are struck by its resonance unexpectedly.

The song “Checked Out” is just one example of the many anthemic tunes that adorn this record, creating a juxtaposition between the absent mental space the lyrics describe and the undeniable presence of self that comes with singing your heart out to rock anthems. BANGS! Music & Entertainment say of Pharmacose’s work, “There’s a mix of hard-driving rock and roll, punctuated on some verses with the melodic aplomb of alternative, with the modern sensibilities of emotional music. The vocals of Wes Jones carry some angst, with a mix of anger, sadness and bewilderment.” The entirety of this statement ‘checks out’ (pun absolutely intended this time), other tracks like “The Clearing” and “Alternate Reality” just a couple more stand-out examples.

This whole album is consistent in its sound, whilst also managing to take us on a journey through a few of the many complex thoughts and emotions that come with awareness of mental health. It is familiar in its style, and daring in its subject matter. These elements work in tandem to draw in listeners it is safe to assume Pharmacose would want: loyal people who don’t shy away from the heavy things in life, but that also just love a bit of reliable rock. ***

Album review: THE VIBRATORS – The Albums 1985-1990

THE VIBRATORS – The Albums 1985-1990

Captain Oi!/Cherry Red

One of the finest bands of the original punk era, the early years of The Vibrators have already been comprehensively collected by Cherry Red in two previous box sets. Their commercially successful years were well behind them by the time they signed to FM-Revolver in 1985, their recordings for whom are brought together in this 5CD set.

The energetic, rough and ready “Live” was their first ever live album, recorded in Germany and England. The set list mixes earlier classics like ‘Automatic Lover’, ‘Baby Baby’, ‘Troops of Tomorrow’ and ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’ with more recent songs such as ‘Rip Up The City’, ‘Blown Away By Love’ and ‘Crazy Dream’. There are also a couple of tracks from the underrated “Alaska 127” album, ‘Amphetamine Blue’ and ‘Baby Blue Eyes’. The line-up for this recording included three original members – Knox, Eddie and John Ellis – and was produced by the fourth, Pat Collier.

Ellis had left by the time they started recording sixth album “Recharged”. Incoming were guitarist Mickie Owen and ex-Dogs D’Amour bassist Mark Duncan. Released in January 1988, catchy single ‘String Him Along’ is a great opener. Other highlights include the haunting ‘Every Day I Die A Little’ and the fiery ‘Too Dumb’. ‘Rip It Up, Tear It Up’ has a Rolling Stones swagger, and a live version of ‘Disco In Mosco’ is added as a bonus track.

The ever-prolific band released a second studio album of ’88 in November with the same line-up (plus Waterboys sax man Anthony Thistlethwaite), entitled “Meltdown”. ‘The Other Side Of Midnight’, ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Danger Street’ are a trio of melodic gems. The folky Faces-esque ‘Letting You Go’ and rockabilly vibes of ‘Let’s Go’ are something of a departure, but effective. The excellent ‘Wasted Life’ was originally issued on the cassette format, as well as the German issue of the CD, and is included here as a bonus track.

By 1989’s “Vicious Circle”, Mickie Owen had been replaced by ex-Members guitarist Nigel Bennett. ‘No Getting Over You’ is a killer power pop cut, comfortably up there with the very best of the band’s output from any period. ‘Rocket Ride To Heaven’, ‘Ruby’s Gotta Heart’ and ‘No Mercy’ are the pick of the other self-penned tracks, while there are also worthy covers of Goffin/King’s ‘Halfway To Paradise’ and ‘Slow Death’ by The Flamin’ Groovies. Bonus track is the B-side ‘Drive’, featuring Darrell Bath on guitar.

1990’s “Volume Ten” was, appropriately enough, the band’s tenth album. The mellow ‘World In Your Hands’, written by Mark Duncan, should have given some of the ‘indie’ guitar bands of the time a run for their money. In a similar vein is Knox’s atmospheric ‘Out Of My System’, while ‘Don’tcha Know Now’ and ‘Can’t Have It All’ are classic Vibrators. Continuing the covers theme, the band take on Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’.

This set is well worthy of investigation for fans not familiar with this period of the Vibrators career. It comes with a 24-page booklet containing original artwork and comprehensive notes, with the discs themselves slotted into in miniature replica sleeves, all housed in an outer clamshell box. ***1/2
