Gig review: THOSE DAMN CROWS – Tramshed, Cardiff – 5th February 2022

It has been a while since I reviewed a show, i believe it may have been the Steelhouse Away Day 1 with Bernie Marsden which was in 2019. We know why the 2nd one didn’t happen, and also put pay to the couple of rescheduled dates, so I will not try to bring up the C word or the P word.

Back when it should have happened this would have been the biggest headline show the Bridgend boys would have played at the time, it sold out quickly and the capacity is 1000, unfortunately that was surpassed last year in their triumph at Cardiff Castle .

For me the Castle show was the moment where they proved they have the material, and more importantly, the fan base (CROWFAMILY) to pull off the big show, with people travelling from all over the UK  to support them.

Those Damn Crows never really got a chance to promote the charting 2nd album ‘Point Of No Return’ having just come out before the dreaded lock downs. A Download slot main stage, and tour with The Dead Daisies in Europe, among other things, were cancelled.

They didn’t feel sorry for themselves though, they created their own live podcast, Crowcast, where they managed to pull a lot more fans in to the fold. They also released enough merchandise to put Gene Simmons to shame and, more importantly, kept their name out there while also being more accessible to the fans who tuned in every week. It was a bold and new marketing move a lot of whilst some of their contemporaries disappearing and starting from scratch once more ,so hats off to them.

For this all Welsh affair Tribeless were given the opportunity to kick things off. Considering this was their biggest show to date they showed no signs of nerves facing a packed venue. Their 30 minute set was punchy and in your face, with their alternative rock style being very easy on the ears. For such a young band with a very engaging and visual vocalist in Lydia MacDonald, Tribeless appear to have all the pieces needed to progress quickly.

Being a Steelhouse production it wouldn’t be the same if Hand Of Dimes didn’t appear on the bill somewhere, and they looked so happy to be back on that stage. Welcomed onstage with a cheer usually reserved for a grand slam winning team, by a largely partisan crowd, Nev with his fist in the air feeding off the crowd.

For the whole 50 minutes the crowd sang their hearts out along to pretty much their whole debut album. It would have been nice to hear a new song but maybe next time. ‘Looking At You’, ‘Pinstriped Arrogance’ and ‘Come The Hour’ set the energy levels running along with  a round the chanting of ‘Nev’.

‘Jacobs Ladder’ and ‘Angels and Demons’ gave us all a chance to hear that majestic voice in all its finery. I thought we may get a Kooga song thrown in for the Cardiff lot, but they opted instead for that other ace up their sleeve in Skins ‘House Of Love’. I could feel the floor moving as people were bouncing to this one!

I have heard many people sing this song, one or two have done it well, some not, but no-one can do it like Nev does. Hand Of Dimes are not household names sadly, however the musicians are second to none and have been playing the circuit for years. They gel well together on stage , and always look like they enjoy it as much as the crowd.

A few years ago, I caught a show in the EVI Ebbw Vale maybe 2017, where Those Damn Crows played a small set. The headline band that night was Hand of Dimes, and watching from the side of the stage was none other than a couple of the Dimes boys, including Nev. He saw what a few others saw, a band that had that particular something – the X factor if you like – along with good songwriting, a hard work ethic. Relentless touring of the country honing their stage craft and delivering not just a gig, but a show.

With the house lights down the crowd erupted, with Shane belting out ‘Cardiff, are you ready’…. they were more than ready! They had waited a long time for this and they were going to enjoy it. Tearing into ‘Who Did It’ with ‘Long Time Dead’ and ‘Don’t Give A Damn’ in quick succession. It sounded like Those Damn Crows were playing a touch faster, it could have be me, or them being out of practice.

Unpredictable is the best term to describe Shane Greenhall. If he isn’t prowling the stage like a caged tiger, he will be on the barrier getting among the crowd, you dare not take your eyes off him. He will turn up in the most unexpected places, during ‘’Set In Stone he usually goes for a wander , I don’t think he knows where he is going, especially if there is an air of danger about it.

Tonight he raised the bar a little too high as he climbed over the upstairs balcony to address the floor crowd’ holding on by one hand. It was the dismount that had people taking a sudden breath though as he jumped off  the balcony onto the speaker stack side stage, before, finally, landing on the stage once more.

It isn’t just about the show or Shane, you have to have the songs to back it up and the other members to deliver them. Either side of the stage are two of the most understated guitarists, in Shiner and David Winchurch.  Both are more than happy to deliver the flesh of the songs with their gutterall riffs whilst rarely coming out of their respective corners.

The rhythm section of  Lloyd Wood (bass), with his encyclopaedic knowledge of rock poses, and little Ronnie Huxford, who can only be seen when standing up, drives the energy with his frenetic drumming.

The Crows are not afraid to try something different  with an acoustic version of ‘Kingdom Of Dust’ and it has become the norm to see the piano onstage for their slower numbers. ‘Never Win’ and ‘Blink Of An Eye’, with just Shanes voice and the tinkling ivories ,  mean you get to hear the purity and emotion of that stunning voice and respectively the crowd don’t make a sound. People have their own meaning and associations to the lyrics in this song, and this version usually gets tears flowing from some. Blink is THE song that they could never really drop from the set.

For me it is when they have the fire in their bellies and at full throttle you see the best of them, ‘Someone Someday’, ‘Set in Stone’ and ‘Sin On Skin’ are many fan favourites included tonight. The time seemed to go by so quick that their set closer,  ‘Rock n Roll Ain’t Dead’ almost sneaked up on us. However, it gave the crowd one more chance to join the band in a big sing along before Shane’s big jump signalled the end of a wonderful night.

Those Damn Crows have something special to sell, whether it be records, whiskey, beer, coffee or hot sauce. I think they have that aforementioned ‘X factor’ needed to sell out shows like this one and bigger.

Album review: ALAN PARSONS – One Note Symphony (Live In Tel Aviv)

Frontiers [release date: 11.02.22]

This was Alan Parsons and his travelling band’s fourth time gigging in Israel, enjoying the huge honour of appearing with the highly regarded Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.

Frontiers signed Parsons 4 years ago, releasing his “solo” album, The Secret, in 2019 (featuring Lou Gramm, Mark Mikel and Jason Mraz). Weeks later, Parsons recorded The Never Ending Show live on stage in Utrecht, with regular sidemen, PJ Olsen, Todd Cooper, Jeff Kollman and others, only months before the Covid bug bit down hard. We reviewed the recording of that gig, in November last year.

Few rock bands get the opportunity to play on stage with The Israeli Philly.

This latest Live Show was recorded in sound and vision at Parson’s request. He knew that musically, it would be “an opportunity to incorporate songs his band wouldn’t otherwise do justice to live”.

Songs like ‘Silence And I’, from the Eye In The Sky album, and of course the title track, ‘One Note Symphony’, referring to the resonant frequency of the Universe (the Schumann frequency) is eerily reflective of his work with ‘Floyd, a restrained rock symphony, tightly constructed, evenly layered. The Orchestra gives it a symphonic dimension that fills the arena and motivates the audience into vocal appreciation.

The Tel Aviv set is not a million miles away from The Never Ending show’s play list. Again, Parsons represents a significant back catalogue through a series of tracks plucked from the past and the present, delivered to us on 2 CDs and a DVD.

All the “Hits” are here…’Sirius/Eye In The Sky’, ‘Games People Play’ and ‘Damned if I do’ also give key band members Kollman and Olsen the opportunity to strut their stuff.

The most notable addition is a six minute rendition of French composer Paul Dukas’s symphonic poem, ‘The Sorceror’s Apprentice’ (used in Fantasia, the movie). It was arranged and conducted by Tom Brooks, the band’s keyboard player, and seemed the perfect classical piece to be enjoyed on a warm summer evening.

Parson’s live albums are always an immersive experience. In this case, it was down to David Minasian and Trinity Houston, of IM3 Global, plus a team of local hires to stitch together the visual landscape to match the music. And of course to get the music mixed down with balance, clarity and oomph. ****1/2

Album review: TRICK OR TREAT – Creepy Symphonies

TRICK OR TREAT – Creepy Symphonies

Scarlet Records [Release date 01.04.22]

‘Creepy Symphonies’ is the seventh studio album from Trick Or Treat, who always entertain with their music. Like Freedom Call, Trick Or Treat like to think of their music as happy metal. Vocalist Alle Conti even found time to design the band’s new logo, as well as fronting Twilight Force.

After a suitably bombastic intro piece ‘Trick Or Treat’, the band are off on a Helloween/Gamma Ray approved power metal romp on ‘Creepy Symphonies’. ‘Have A Nice Judgement Day’, which despite its gloomy subject matter, is real melodic metal treat. With a hook bigger than a whaling ship this song is sure to become a live favourite.

‘Crazy’ is like the early Gamma Ray songs – short, with a frantic pace and a memorable chorus. Loving the guitar intro on ‘Queen Of Likes’, and midway through the song ups the metal ante. ‘April’ has a decent sing-a-long chorus, one of their happy metal tunes!

How can you not love a band that end their album with an eleven minute epic entitled ‘The Power Of Grayskull’? Yes indeed folks, it features He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Subject matter heaven for a power metal band! The pomp keys intro sets the scene nicely, before the band gallop off into power metal land, complete with soaring vocals, choral backing vocals and guitar solos aplenty.

Quite possibly Trick Or Treat’s finest album to date. Here’s hoping they get that extra bit of luck and become much more widely known in power & melodic metal circles. ****

Album review: KRIS BARRAS BAND – Death Valley Paradise

KRIS BARRAS BAND - Death Valley Paradise

Mascot [Release date 04.03.22]

Kris Barras was voted Breakthrough Act in our 2021 poll and the last couple of years have seen him – like many artists – maintaining his profile largely due to livestreaming.  But it’s also given him the opportunity to consolidate the band’s sound which over a six year period has moved from blues rock to anthemic alt-metal in the vein of an Alter Bridge, Shinedown or Fozzy.

Since 2016 Barras has built a following in both UK and Europe but the breakthrough tag in 2021 really reflects a more mainstream acceptance of his offering in a year that he managed to play Stonedead festival, a support with Black Stone Cherry plus an acoustic set with The Darkness.

The early single ‘Dead Horses’ gave a portent of the continuing commercial approach.  This template, following 2019′s ‘Light It Up’,  is repeated throughout the album.

There’s really no filler, just piledriving blues infused riffage and anthemic hooks as evidenced in ‘Long Gone’, ‘My Parade’ and ‘These Voices’.  The pace only slackens slightly for ‘Wake Me When It’s Over’ and ‘Bury Me’.  This album has seen Barras collaborate in the song-writing department with the likes of Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper) and Jonny Andrews (Three Days Grace). They have certainly lent a U.S. style sheen.

‘Death Valley Paradise’ is Barras’ most consistent outing to date.  With each new album his early musical forays and not least his cage-fighting past are cast in half-shadow.  What now emerges is an artist on the verge of arena acceptance on his own terms.  *****

Album review: MARILLION – An Hour Before It’s Dark

MARILLION - An Hour Before It's Dark

Intact/earMUSIC [Release date 04.03.22]

CD+DVD Digipak / CD Digipak / Jewelbox CD / Blu-ray Softbox / 2LP Gatefold / Ltd. Coloured 2LP (Orange)

The past two years of pandemic has understandably pervaded album releases, the most extreme outcome is a definite air of melancholy and introspection.

If F.E.A.R. was a reaction to Trumpian style politics and mores ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ is definitely another child of its time, informed by a concern that – whether by COVID or earthly catastrophe – we have to get our collective act together

The band’s previous album ‘F.E.A.R’ was very well received and reviewed.  My main gripe is that it was a little bit too bombastic, railing as it did against society ills and political shenanigans.

I suppose the truth is that you can’t expect guys approaching their state pension age to emote about unrequited love as they might have done thirty years previously.

‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ for me is a total return to form for the band I have followed since 1991′s ‘Holidays In Eden’.  Throughout, the band create a sumptuous soundscape full of the gorgeous twists and turns we love them for.  There’s also the judicious use of a choir and the string quartet they performed with on the previous release.

The standout – apart from the wonderful ‘The Crow And The Nightingale’ – might well be ‘Care’ with its superbly slinky undertow blossoming into a classic Marillion anthem.  Hogarth’s vocals get better with each outing and the whole is topped by Rothery’s tasteful, soaring guitar figures.

The band previewed the opening track ‘Be Hard On Yourself’ on tour last year and the lyrics challenge conspicuous consumption versus saving the planet. The theme is continued on ‘Reprogram The Gene’ whilst Murder Machines (the only “single” length track) takes social distancing as a starting point for an aside about sexual relationships in general.

‘Sierra Leone’ again demonstates the immersive sonic textures (many created by Mark Kelly) that characterise the band’s music.

The overall vibe is closer to 2012′s ‘Sounds That Can’t Be Made’ than ‘F.E.A.R.’ and maybe all the better for that, at least for this listener.  Still relevant but without the ranting and – it has to be said – the rambling.

Full of lusciousness and loveliness, this is Marillion at their very best.  *****

Album review: GIRISH AND THE CHRONICLES – Hail To The Heroes

Frontiers [release date: 11.02.22]

Highly derivative hard rock/metal from Bengaluru, India band, Girish And The Chronicles. They are now on their third album, and first on Frontiers.

The album’s title, ‘Hail To The Heroes’ suggests a bunch of declamatory stadium anthems. Not to be, unfortunately. What we get is a bunch of stampeding, quasi-metal shout-a-thons, most of them sounding like they were written by an unimaginative committee whose members phoned in their contributions.

In its favour, every song on the album is fueled by a sense of drive and urgency, clearly aiming at a Black’n'Blue, Quiet Riot, Rough Cutt style, where seismic riffs and ragged edged hard rock knock down everything in their path.
But too often they end up going nowhere.

Only the mid album, mid paced ‘Clearing The Blur’ and ‘Lovers Train’ hold their nerve. Each focusing its energies on restrained hard rock, each with a decent melody and a hooky chorus that doesn’t rely on shouting at us.

Elsewhere, the lyrical banalities, the over dependency on the overdriven guitar noise, and the vocalist’s guttural growl, peppered with occasional Coverdale-isms, become too much too soon.

For Girish and his team, the drawing board beckons. **1/2

Album review: CITY OF LIGHTS – Before The Sun Sets

Frontiers [Release date: 11.02.22]

Debut album from City Of Lights – Brit guitarist/writer Neil Austin and Greek vocalist Manos Fatsis (Hideaway).  They are joined in the studio by members of Creye, Degreed and Art Nation.

It’s clear that a passionate love of the AOR genre drives the combatants. They pour themselves fully into every groove. But often it’s just too generic, despite the passionate performances.

One look at the song titles tells you a lot…’Hearts On Fire’. ‘Heart On The Line’, ‘Give Back My Heart’… we’re not looking at Pulitzer Prize winners here.

Yes, ok, the music’s not designed to win literary prizes, but it’s a good example of how playing it by the blueprint, especially in the post rock age, can become a musical straitjacket.

Strong songs ‘Dying Light’ and ‘Joanna’ seem handicapped by the limitations of the arrangements, force fitted into an eighties’s AOR template.

Where it breaks through the surface gloss, as on ‘Racing On The Redline’, a decent chorus and hook are illuminated by finger blistering fretwork, and again on ‘Emily’s tuneful if lightweight AOR (reminiscent of ace Christian Rock band, Idle Cure) you hear a band firmly plugged into the history of the genre.

Perhaps if they had thrown a handful of grit into the mix, a few more songs, like ‘Heat Of The Night’ and ‘Snake Eyes’ might also have broken through the production’s shiny veneer.

For the most part then, it’s good 80′s AOR pastiche, and will go down well with genre fans. But perhaps just when we’re looking for that bit more, there’s less there than meets the eye. ***

Book review: DONT WORRY ‘BOUT THE BEAR (From the Blues to Jazz, Rock & Roll and Black Sabbath) by Jim Simpson with Ron Simpson

Jim Simpson - Don't Worry 'Bout The Bear

Brewin Books [Publication date 22.06.2019]

Jim Simpson’s ‘Don’t Worry ‘Bout The Bear’ – the title comes from a Doctor Ross song written for the author– is a down to earth account of his 60 plus years in the music business, as a musician, bandleader, promoter, record producer, festival director, manager, journalist, publisher and photographer etc.

It’s a musical biography that encourages the reader to share his passion and joie de vivre.

There’s little room for the sensational or scurrilous, though he does recount occasional tales of the road in a sanguine manner, while he shrugs off and music biz shenanigans in his own considered way.

He’s clearly passionate about jazz – playing, promoting, recording and writing about it – and has enough interested in blues and rock to invest his time and energy in an array of bands and albums.

Apart from the Marbella Jazz Festival and European tours, it’s mainly a Birmingham centric book, Britain’s second city being in his view: “The UK Capital of Rock and Roll.”

It’s a contention that seeps into a dry narrative style, big on detail and sometimes delivered in a droll if not ironic style. ‘Don’t Worry ‘Bout The Bear’ isn’t so much a coffee table book – though the many excellent photos might suggest otherwise – but more of a reference book, in which the subtitle, “From The Blues To Jazz, Rock & Roll and Black Sabbath” provides the infrastructure for Simpson’s hands-on experiences.

Refreshingly the focus is primarily on music, while any business skulduggery is seen as an affront to his own musical mission.

A trumpeter himself, Jim is primarily interested in jazz, whether it’s meeting a number of his heroes, or rejoicing in the abilities of lesser known players.

He takes us on a music filled journey incorporating his National Service days in the RAF in Gibraltar, where he broadcasts and writes about jazz.

His photographic skills are honed in the streets of Skegness, while the nearby seaside town near Ingoldmells is where first meets Humphrey Lyttelton, who much later becomes the patron of his Birmingham International Jazz festival.

He forms his own Kansas City style swing band and quickly became adept at organising residencies and other gigs that include international blues names like Jesse Fuller, Buddy Guy and Champion Jack Dupree.

Fired by the arrival of the Beat Boom, he proudly notes: “In 1964 the Midland Beat paper estimated that there were over 500 groups in the city.”  He ends up managing a jazz into r&b and soul band.  They change their name to Locomotive, enjoy a ska hit, but have Proggy pretensions.

In championing the band with a Xmas single he effectively starts Big Bear Records, which goes on to be the UK’s longest independent label.

An involvement with Bakerloo blues band leads to him establishing Henry’s Blues House in 1968, which Melody Maker calls: “the first and best progressive music club outside of London.”

It’s worth pondering the quote, because just as Jim was about to branch into yet another role as an agent, hosting an array of top American blues artists, at no point in this book does he appear to be constrained by style, fashion or even a lack of commercial potential.

He even manages to get the very eclectic Tea & Symphony signed to Harvest records.

And by the time of the “From Earth To Black Sabbath” chapter, he’s on a mission to fight Sabbath’s corner against a London based apathetic music press.

“I didn’t expect everyone to enjoy the music, but the quality was undeniable, the presence and the power impossible to ignore.”

Being the music biz, of course he gets shafted, though he says Don Arden: “always without exception, treated me fairly, even generously.”

He blues artists tours are illustrated by some outstanding photos. Ditto his jazz gigs. He also becomes an essential champion of home grown talent such as Val Wiseman (vocalist with ‘Lady Sings The Blues’ and later his partner) and the King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys swing band.

By the mid 80s he establishes the long standing Birmingham International Jazz Festival and publishes Jazz Rag magazine.

It’s roundabout the half way point in the book that he drops a barely disguised bomb shell, by admitting that the well sponsored 1990 Miles Davis appearance at the Birmingham NEC – the biggest jazz event the city’s history – is a financial flop, leading to it being reconfigured as a free festival in the future.

There are also some wry reflections on his stewardship of the troubled Birmingham’s Ronnie Scott club franchise, and the later Marbella Jazz Festival, but it’s countered by happier memories at his Birmingham equivalent.

If there’s a downside to the book, it’s in the narrative pacing, which is partly due to a paying too little attention to the changing musical environment. At times it feels as if he’s in a bubble of his own making, but maybe that’s a direct reflection of a true independent spirit in search of new challenge.

The bonus is that there’s a full discography and a proper index. Then again you’d expect nothing less from a true fan. ****

Gig review:JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 3 February 2022

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 3 February 2022

One of my favourite gigs of last year was when FM guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick played The Cavern bar in suburban South-west London.  The occasion was special enough, being my first show after the 2021 lockdown was relaxed, but the musical quality was almost as impressive, making this return visit a must for me.

That occasion had been a solo acoustic show, but this time he was accompanied by a full band with some real pedigree, including current Status Quo drummer Leon Cave and his FM bandmate Jem Davis on keyboards. Sadly the attendance was less than last time, with more competition than in those days when owner Noel Nevin had been heroically keeping the Cavern going, almost uniquely among London gig venues. While there were flashes of his chirpy humour, stories and tales were also distinctively shorter in this new format.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 3 February 2022

He opened with a quartet of songs from his excellent recent album ‘Ballad Of A Prodigal Son’ in the insidious riffing of the title track, ‘No Such Thing As A Sure Thing’- with Jem playing the harmonica-  and the first of many songs in which he showed the talent as a slide guitarist that is rather under utilised in his day job, ‘Ain’t Going Down Alone’ and the Robert Johnson-inspired ‘61 and 49’, the eponymous crossroads where he sold his soul to the devil.

Though the bulk of the set was blues rock originals including ‘Changed Priorities’, ‘Full Time Occupation’ and the Alvin Lee- like boogie of ‘Heavy Weather’ he did finish the first set in style with a cover of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’, always a bold one to carry off. His guitar technique was superb, though to focus on that solely would be to neglect the fact he is a fine vocalist in his own right.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 3 February 2022

Sharing a similar musical background, he has written and played together with Bernie Marsden and their collaboration ‘Dead Man Walking’, which has been playlisted on Planet Rock, opened the second set in storming fashion. There were then two lengthier songs in an old Eddie Floyd cover ‘Five Long Years’, a slow blues where the  guitar and piano interplay was reduced almost to a standstill before picking up pace again, and the dreamy ‘Brave New World’, also with a touch of Floyd but in this instance Pink.

‘Always On The Road’ was more straight ahead with Jem’s keyboard playing (which seemed more prominent for most of the second set) really providing added swing and groove and set closer ‘Got To Know’ was in the same mould and highly enjoyable in a catchy fashion.

JIM KIRKPATRICK- The Cavern, Raynes Park, London, 3 February 2022

Jim has recently played with Rory Gallagher alumni in Band of Friends and between those two was a cover of one of his more obscure songs, ‘I Fall Apart’, a slow number but turning into an epic with a superb winding solo. It seemed even more fitting as the great Irishman was an influence that had struck me more than once during the evening as a comparison.

A solitary encore again made a great fist of one of the standards in the Allman Brothers ‘Whipping Post’, turning into a jam that even featured a bass solo from Ollie Collins. Those who stayed away missed a treat as, supported by an excellent band, Jim Kirkpatrick showed off the talents that can appeal to fans of melodic rock and blues rock alike.

Album review : DEGREED – Are You Ready

Frontiers [Release date: 11.02.22]

Are You Ready is Degreed’s sixth album, and their first on Frontiers.

Robin Erikkson, Mats Erikkson, Mikael Blanc and Daniel Johansson have come a long long way in six albums. Their focus is clearly on the road ahead, but they steal frequent looks into AOR’s rear view mirror.

They’ve audibly spent the time since the debut honing their songwriting skills to a razorlike sharpness. Systematically shaping their style into one that makes the New Wave of Scandi Melodic Rock a thrilling sensory experience.

Superb opener, ‘Into The Fire’ is more passion than pastiche. Their songs’ dynamics are more assured now, showing us a band with a firm grasp of the essentials and an eye for the finer points, spinning a web of melody into concise, punchy AOR.

It’s the leading edge of an album that brings us a new set of songs that put them up there with Bro Firetribe (Higher), Leverage (Feed The Lie), and Wigelius (Turn Back).

That said, the Queen-like ‘Radio’ is head and shoulders above everything else here. The production and arrangement are powerful and full on, slowly transitioning the song from thumping rock to a cross generational middle section … an emotional surge of instrumental music that blends rock with film score sophistication.

And still, the headlining hooks just keep on coming.

‘Burning’ and ‘Falling Down’ show us amazingly athletic changes of pace. Both going from zero to hero in a heartbeat, delivering two swaggeringly confident choruses that recall Harem Scarem’s best moments.

It’s no exaggeration to say this is a truly absorbing, entertaining melodic rock album. One that could easily be a gateway drug to the AOR of the eighties. ****

EP review: LORDS OF RUIN – Ruin Within

LORDS OF RUIN - Ruin Within

Website [Release 24.01.22; streaming services from 14.02.22]

Metal band, Lords of Ruin have released their long-awaited debut EP, following the inevitable Covid delays to production and release, which have affected so many up-and-coming bands. It literally stalled them in their tracks (excuse the pun) just as they were gaining momentum.

So, what does this ‘Ruin Within’ EP deliver? It has 6 tracks including the 2 previously released Lords of Ruins singles “What’s Left?” and “In From The Cold”, demonstrating their versality and potential (and what potential), with poignant lyrics, tight musicianship, blissful heavy melodies, they rightly claim their place in the Metal genre.

Showcasing their diversity is the almost ballad like ‘Walk the Line’, Dox vocal range is vast, and nothing demonstrates it better than this track, which is a personal favourite. ‘The Man I Am’ starts gently with poignancy and then delivers an absolute blast of hard rock, sublime guitar riffage right there.

I’ve recently had the privilege of seeing Lords of Ruin live at Hard Rock Hell XIV, ‘What’s Left’ was the set opener at Hard Rock Hell XIV and the arena filled up while they were playing it, you’ll soon see why! They exceeded my expectations live and this EP delivers you a taste of what these Metal Lords are capable of, covering songs from their inception to where they are today, ready to launch an offensive on the metal world. ****

Single review: SKINNY KNOWLEDGE – I Wonder

Facebook [Release date 25.02.22]

Bournemouth based rockers, Skinny Knowledge follow up on their awesome debut album, ‘Don’t Turn Out the Lights’ with a new single, ‘I Wonder’.

The single continues the band’s own brand of high energy, alternative rock that delivers attitude and superb musicianship.

The heavy bassline sections is simply sublime and when overlaid with the vocals, just takes the track to a different level. The change of vocal and musical styles is clever, familiar and yet new. The lyrics crafting and vocals are all delivered by Andy Smooth, who is the brainchild and driving force behind Skinny Knowledge. Lyrically, as was the case in the debut album, this is music with a heartfelt message. I’ll confess right now, I absolutely love it!

Skinny Knowledge were my best debut album choice for 2021 and if the release of ‘I Wonder’ as a teaser single is anything to go by, I suspect they’ll be carving themselves out a slot in my 2022 albums of the year choices too. Skinny Knowledge are touring this year, catch them soon – I’ll see you there! *****

Album review: JACK FRANCIS – Jack Francis

JACK FRANCIS - Jack Francis

Good Deeds Music [Release date: 04.02.22]

In introducing his remarkably lean and confident debut album, Jack Francis manages to namecheck Bruce Springsteen, and without realising it, Paul McCartney.

There are echoes of ‘Yesterday’ in his story that the song, ‘Helena’, popped into his head in one seamless package . . . lyrics, chords, chorus . . . during a dream one night. Springsteen sat outside his house and sang it to him. Cool.

He woke next morning and wrote it all down. Done.

We have no doubt it’s all true. But even if it isn’t, it’s a great story. He should write a song about it.

Francis, an Englishman in Americana, writes songs that evoke the confessional blues and the plaintive country rock music of days gone by. Confessional in the sense he claims he’s not complete without the love of a good, good woman. ‘Driftwood’ as his voice breaks down, and ‘Cold Hearted Little Man’ is this notion at its most stark… “Alone I Won’t Survive”. The album is full of those brief, glorious moments of poetic self awareness.

None of the songs on the album could be described as a ballad. Just heartfelt, unhurried songs, rising to choruses backed up by a gospel choir…like on ‘A Little Love’ and ‘Wild Eyes’, two of many where the acoustic and electric mix of guitars are tracked by a Hammond Organ, like a friend playing catchup.

And while ‘Helena’ and ‘A Little Love’ have been getting the BBC radio airplay, it’s fair to say that ‘Holiday’ is the album’s big song. It creates the biggest ripple in a flow of slow moving admissions, as Francis expresses his love for an unamed woman. There’s a sadness in the song too, but it’s incredibly strong, very mellow. The way a love song should be.

All through the album, Francis seems to be drawing from a well of hard won self knowledge. Even when his grainy, lived-in vocals tackle the jaunty, amusing ‘Silver Lining’, he ultimately concludes that for every artist ambitious to make it, reality eventually bites … “when you’re flat broke, nobody will give you the time of day’, and decisions have to be made.

This album should change all that. ****

Album review: JAMIE’S GUNS – Sex, Drugs & Weapons of War

JAMIE'S GUNS – Sex, Drugs & Weapons of War

Facebook [Release date 04.01.22]

This band was one of my lucky finds in 2021, when I spotted the debut self-titled album in the NWOCR Facebook group, and I have been sharing their music far and wide ever since, whilst eagerly anticipating the release of the follow up album. Well here it is and it is fair to say that I am not disappointed!

Opening with an instrumental, ‘Echoes’ which is all screaming guitar riffs, the tracks on the album continue as the debut album, to be split vocally between Cameron Russell and Gregory Wilson, which adds real depth and interest to the songs.

Initially I was leaning towards the songs with Gregory leading on vocals, but by the time I had listened enough to select my tracks, it’s a pretty even split and the diversity in vocals just adds to the quality of the album for me.

It is clear that this band have moved to a new level of maturity and established Jamie’s Guns unique sound – I would still classify it as gravelly, blues rock and I love it.

The foot tapping tempo is present from ‘Rollin’ Stone (lead vocal by Gregory Wilson) and continues throughout the album except for the ballad, ‘Land’ and ‘Epoch’ which is a short instrumental interlude that reminds me of Jean-Michel Jarre with drums. Again not a mainstream choice but adds interest and showcases Cameron’s talent on keys.

Sex, Drugs & Weapons of War contains poignant lyrics that we can all relate to ‘The Road’ (lead vocal by Cameron Russell) “I don’t know where I am going, I don’t know where I am supposed to be” and ‘Get Away’ – “I know I shouldn’t be the one in question” provides a lyrical backdrop for many a relationship breakdown, “so I can start over, just gotta get away”.

On ‘Sky High’ there is a distorted voice at the very beginning, this was picked up in a video recording of one of the band’s rehearsals when a guitar amp started picking up radio frequencies right before they started playing this song! The band decided it added interest and included the audio clip at the start of the song. I’d like to think it is some rocker who has shuffled off this earth, showing their approval!

The closing track ‘For You’ has real feeling about it, “Don’t you know, I did all that I could, yeh, I did it for you” and it leaves you wanting more.

My personal stand out tracks are ‘Anymore’, ‘Good n’Gone’, ‘The Road’, and ‘For You’ – but it was tough to choose, they’re all so good! I’ve listened to this album so many times, it is already a ‘go to; listen on my playlists.

Last year, this band confirmed my view that new rock bands are the future and the absolute life blood of rock. My opinion hasn’t changed. This band is going places. Give them a try, I’ll be surprised if you don’t find something you like in their material.

Jamie’s Guns are a little different in terms of style which, I hope, will gain them some airplay and the opportunity to tour. I have already added this album to my top choices of 2022 and I ask for no forgiveness for unashamedly, supporting and sharing this band, I’ll be eagerly waiting to see what comes next. *****

Album review: POCO – One Night In Nashville

POCO - One Night In Nashville

Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra [Release date 28.01.22]

This 2004 live recording is one of the last to feature original members Rusty Young, Richie Furay, and George Grantham together with Paul Cotton who joined the band for their third album in 1971 replacing Jim Messina.  Sadly both Young and Cotton died in 2021.  Grantham suffered a stroke in 2004.

So there’s a certain end of an era appeal to this set which is essentially a “best of”.  The album was originally released in 2004 as ‘Keeping The Legend Alive’ and then reissued as ‘Alive In The Heart Of The Night’ in 2006.

The band formed out of Buffalo Springfield, revered as pioneers of country-tinged rock.  It was The Eagles who took this genre to a massive commercial audience and Poco were forever in their shadow.

It’s for that reason that Young perhaps understandably states at the opening that he won’t mention Don Henley.  There was evidently a bit of bad blood, with founder member Randy Meisner leaving Poco after their first album (1969) and subsequently forming Eagles.  And for a time Poco had future Eagles stalwart in their ranks, Timothy B.Schmidt.

It was after his departure in 1977 that Poco experienced their most successful period in terms of record sales with ‘Legend’ (1978) producing two chart singles – included here – ‘Crazy Love’ and ‘Heart Of The Night’.  The album chimed with the popularity of late-1970s AOR and Phil Kenzie revives his sax solo on the latter song.  But it would be another ten years before they had similar success with the album ‘Legacy’ which brought together again the original members.

‘One Night In Nashville’ is a great way of introducing yourself to the band who always had greater recognition in their homeland and amongst their peers. They were beset by line-up changes (Furay left in 1973) and poor early album sales but they nevertheless are rightly regarded as integral players in the history of country rock. ****

Album review : BRIX SMITH and MARTY WILLSON-PIPER – Lost Angeles

Cadiz Music [Release date: 17.o1.22]

This one has an interesting story behind it. Brix Smith was originally named after The Clash standard, Guns of Brixton, which is pretty cool.

In the 90’s she went to a gig in her native USA to see John Peel’s darlings “The Fall”. In fact cult darlings really; or even “The Mighty Fall” as Peely used to say!

Anyway Brix hooked up with singer Mark E.Smith, and they drove off to a party together. “So what do you do?” said Mark.
“I’m kinda in a band” she replied
“Have you got any tapes to listen to?”
“Yes”
“Who wrote these songs – they’re genius!”
“Er, me”
So Mark E Smith married Brix and invited her to join The Fall !

The album ‘Lost Angeles’ is released as a duo with Marty Willson-Piper, long term member of “The Church” and not his first collaboration with Brix Smith. In fact he has a fine pedigree of collaborations with prominent artists. He’s also a world renowned record collector, with some 50,000 vinyl records in his highly lauded collection.

Lost Angeles was recorded 25 years ago but never released (can you see what they’re doing here?).

In truth it’s actually a very good CD.

Marty’s jangly guitars open proceedings on ‘Backwards’, evoking The Smiths, especially when Brix’s opening line is ‘such a handsome man’ !

The songs are very well crafted, in fact excellent songs. There’s only one cover on the album, and you’ve got to love an artist who chooses one penned by Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy Ramone

It’s certainly of its time. Sometimes sparse, sometimes disonnant drone in the backing, often punk influenced.

In a world 25 years ago of Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp and Manic Street Preachers they somehow fit (at least on the outside).

Made at the VIP Lounge in Penzance – need to watch out for pirates (boom boom !) ****

Album review: JOHNNY COPPIN – River Of Dreams

JOHNNY COPPIN – River Of Dreams

Red Sky Records [Release date 25.02.22]

Johnny Coppin is a singer songwriter who was a member of Decameron back in the 1970′s and has released over a dozen solo albums to date. He has toured as part of a duo with Phil Beer of Show Of Hands and in more recent times with Mike Silver and Paul Burgess (who adds his fiddle & recorder playing to a couple of songs on this album). Joining Coppin and Burgess are Dik Cadbury (Julie July Band, ex-Decameron, ex-Steve Hackett) on backing vocals; Geoff March (ex-Decameron) on cello; John Broomhall on piano and organ; Mick Candler on drums; Gareth Sampson on bass; and Ben Church on dobro.

The songs – many written in lockdown over the past year or so – are about legends, separation, ambition, fears and dreams.

Opening with ‘The Bisley Boy’, which is about the young Elizabeth I dying when In Gloucestershire, and being replaced by a local boy as there were no girls who looked like her. A fascinating tale, one of many contained on this album, including ‘Song of The Severn’ about the River Severn, and the legend of Sabrina, the goddess of the river.

‘In The Heart of the War’ is Coppin’s tribute to the men and women of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) working in France during World War II. Beautifully sung and crafted, with the dobro an added piece of class to overall proceedings.

Bringing things up to date ‘Let’s Find A Way’ is a pandemic inspired song, which has a gentle, yet memorable chorus and is an uplifting tune.

There are two covers, the first being ‘When The Master Calls The Roll’, written by Rosanna Cash, John Leventhal & Rodney Crowell. Then there is ‘The Greenway’ – a song by Stroud singer-songwriter Jehanne Mehta – is a delightful song about appreciating the natural world around. One for those after traditional folk and features the cello of Geoff March.

The album is nicely produced allowing Coppin’s singing to take centre stage, to which are added the various instruments that complement, rather than overhwelm, the singing.

Johnny Coppin has created an album that will certainly satisfy his fans and those who enjoy mature singer songwriters who have moved on from self-introspection, to real life stories and tales. Coppin has a stunning vocal, still powerful and moving after many years of singing and performing. ***1/2

Album review: CACTUS – The Birth Of Cactus 1970

CACTUS - The Birth Of Cactus 1970

Purple Pyramid/Cleopatra [Release date 21.01.22]

Following other heavyweights such as Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge, Cactus fashioned their own brand of bluesy heavy rock at the turn of the sixties.  It was a supergroup in the making with ex-Fudgers Carmine Appice on drums and Tim Bogert on bass.

Now Cleopatra have unearthed the band’s early gig when they shared the stage with the likes of Hendrix and Grateful Dead.  It was recorded a month or so before the release of their debut album in July 1970.

I was reminded of their contemporaries Mountain as they pile through the instrumental opener ‘One Way…Or Another’ (which gave them the title of their second album) followed by ‘Sweet Sixteen’.  Their brand of riff driven blues based rock will transport you back to an early era when this genre flourished.

The focus in this 40 minute set is naturally on the band’s debut album including the tracks ‘Parchman Farm’, ‘Feel So Good’ (with the ubiquitous two-minute drum solo), the slow blues ‘No Need To Worry’ and a medley including the tracks ‘Let Me Swim and ‘Oleo’.

In 2021 we got the latest iteration of the band with ‘Tightrope’, Appice present and guitarist Jim McCarty guesting on two tracks.  But, excellent as it was,  it failed to capture the real essence of this early 1970s version which is thankfully captured here in all its raw, visceral glory. ****

Album review: SLADE – Alive, Slade In Flame (splatter vinyl)

SLADE - Alive, Slade In Flame (splatter vinyl)

BMG [Release date 26.11.21]

BMG continue their excellent Slade reissue campaign. The West Midlands glam rock legends had many a hit in the 70s. Fronted by Noddy Holder, they were the face of laddish glam hard rock.

After a difficult start at the turn of the decade, the band broke through with early 70s hits Get Down And Get With It, Coz I Luv You and Look Wot You Dun. They wanted to cement the success with a live album, as while the fourpiece had plenty of energy, everything was turned up to eleven on stage. And what a storming slab of vinyl this is.

A thumping driving rhythm opens as the band kick off with a cover of Ten Years After’s Hear Me Calling. Plenty of fuzz and even more energy, the crowd are stomping and clapping along from the start. Classic Slade follows with In Like A Shot From My Gun, before another cover of The Lovin’ Spoonful’s Darling Be Home Soon. Side 1 closes with Slade’s own Know Where You Are. A well received rocker.

As is side 2 opener Keep On Rocking, which features Holder’s upper mid range hoarse vocals that helped that distinctive Slade sound. A fine guitar solo in there too. The album closes with an 8 minute raucous cover of Steppenwolf’s Born To Be Wild.

A classic live album that influenced the likes of Kiss’ Alive set and many more besides. Want something to blow away the cobwebs, this’ll do.

Two studio albums followed in Slayed and Old New Borrowed & Blue, which saw Slade regularly on stage, TV and in the charts, before we get the next reissue here; Slade In Flame. This LP was effectively a soundtrack to the film of the same name and because it was set in the mid 60s, if changed the flow somewhat. But even so, some great music here.

Opener How Does It Feel still sounds classic Slade mixed with a 60s whimsical touch. Them Monkey’s Can’t Swing is more uptempo, and So Far So Good has a good glam edge to a mid paced song. Far Far Away was the lead the single and epitomised the break from the band’s formula. A hit single that remained one of the band’s favourites.

Both albums with sonically take you back to your youth, and with gatefold sleeves replicating the original releases, they look and feel as good as they sound. Now only will releases take you back to your childhood, but the coloured vinyl is a real bonus. The sound quality is excellent. Crank it up. *****

Gig review: SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

Saxon’s 40th anniversary show was a case of deferred pleasure even by current standards. It was actually first scheduled as long ago as October 2019 but delayed when singer Biff Byford underwent heart surgery, and subsequently rescheduled at least twice more, I lose count.

As Omicron spread you would have got short odds on a further cancellation, and indeed of the trio of shows Glasgow fell victim, so when the day finally arrived it almost seemed too good to be true, and added to the atmosphere of anticipation.  We should count our blessings as these events are still not possible in most of Europe right now, and it certainly felt like the biggest show since the pandemic with seemingly the whole of London’s rock and metal scene, fans, journos and musicians alike, out in force.

Despite the constant rescheduling, the sold out sign was hung outside what was always known as the Hammy Odeon in the days when Saxon were regular headliners here. The last time was in 1990 but this was the final proof how they have worked their way back to popularity on the strength of delivering live every time.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

The sense of occasion was added to with a very strong supporting cast and indeed an opening time of 5pm reflected the fact this was almost a hybrid of mini festival and headline show.

The first two acts were very much Saxon’s contemporaries in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement so indelibly associated with them, though Diamond Head have long been down to one original member in guitarist Brian Tatler. They had an unenviable task going on so early, and with much of the stage cordoned off, and a couple of unmemorable more recent numbers made for a slow start.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

The set then drew heavily- in the form of ‘Lightning to the Nations’, ‘Sweet and Innocent’ and ‘Helpless’ – on their debut which has also celebrated its 40th anniversary since the gig was originally planned, rather than the more polished material off the subsequent pair of major label albums. Current singer Rasmus Andersen has a strong voice but the nuances of Sean Harris’ original delivery were missed.

Finally the set came good with the epic ‘Am I Evil’, with that dark riff and thrilling high-speed solo of Brian’s, that so inspired the young Metallica, in turn reviving Diamond Head’s own career. It induced a bit of a ruck downstairs and even the odd headbang in the balcony. I suspect we will see better of them when they are the sole support on Saxon’s winter tour.

Girlschool were another familiar face, with a long history of touring with Saxon, particularly with old buddies Motorhead.  Again they were rather limited by the wide and shallow stage set up with capable guitarist Jackie Chambers seemingly in a different postcode and they let slip some early frustrations with the sound. My own last sighting of them was in 2008, supporting Dio,  but reassuringly they have not really changed in 40 years right down to frontwoman Kim McAuliffe shouting her ‘cheers you lot’ catchphrase in that broad South London accent.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

Other than slipping in a solitary song from their most recent album ‘Guilty as Sin’ in the title track,  they fairly tore through a set of old favourites from their first two albums- including ‘Demolition Boys’,  ‘C’Mon Lets Go’, and ‘Future Flash’, followed by ‘Nothing to Lose’ with a crowd singalong and my own favourite ‘Race With the Devil’. Indeed after a tribute to Motorhead their own cover of ‘Bomber’ and a closer of ‘Emergency’ brought back further memories of the days when there was such a kinship and musical crossover between the two bands, and I enjoyed their set far more than I was expecting to.

There was probably a shortage of home grown options to replace Krokus from the original bill,  but a few weeks before Uriah Heep were announced in the special guests slot, which also came with a full band backdrop and stage set and improved lighting compared to the two openers. However, being associated with an earlier golden age of rock they were not as natural bedfellows on the bill.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

The set travelled backwards in time, opening with a solitary number from their most recent ‘Living the Dream’ album in ‘Grazed by Heaven’ before a storming ‘Too Scared to Run’ which would have been their new song when they appeared together with Saxon at Donington in 1982.

The rest of the set was taken from their early seventies commercial peak. Yet anyone expecting a bunch of dated old farts would have been shocked that this version of Heep is perhaps the heaviest in their 50 plus year career with the younger rhythm section of Dave Rimmer and Russell Gilbrook supplying fresh power.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

‘Gypsy’ showcased the band trademarks of heavy Hammond organ playing from Phil Lanzon and founder member Mick Box’s wah-wah guitar, then a rollicking ‘Look at Yourself’ segued into an instrumental jam in which every band member showed off their prowess. They did likewise on the epic ‘July Morning’ which flew by before a couple of slightly shorter favourites in ‘Sunrise’ and the perennial ‘Easy Livin’.

Though I’d seen pretty much this set at Stonedead Festival last year, it was still highly impressive and I sensed they relished a rare opportunity to play a larger venue than usual and win over some new fans.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

After an introductory montage of old photos and press cuttings the curtain fell to reveal an even more elaborate stage arrangement for Saxon, with the giant Eagle looming over the stage and a stage set resembling a castle with a stained glass window sporting their the ‘S’ logo behind Nigel Glockler’s drumkit.

They opened with a pair of faster numbers old and more recent in ‘Motorcycle Man’ and ‘Battering Ram’ before I was shocked to hear one of their NWOBHM-defining classics so early in the set in ‘Wheels of Steel’, complete with obligatory sing along and getting a few people in the circle fist punching from their seats.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

Traditionally a Saxon show focuses on more recent product in the first half of the set before moving on to such tried and tested crowd pleasers. However after their musical and lyrical tribute to Mororhead in ‘They Played Rock n Roll’  came two of the latter in ‘Strong Arm of the Law’ and ‘Denim and Leather’, the guitars of Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt intertwining perfectly. Not half an hour in, the Ferrero Rocher ‘ambassadors’ advert came to mind- ‘Saxon, with these songs you are spoiling us!’

The full range of their now 43 year career was covered when the rapid fire sounds of the title track from last all-new studio album ‘Thunderbolt’ was followed by ‘Backs to the Wall’ from their very first album. I might have preferred the epic ‘Frozen Rainbow’ to be chosen but this was a night when it was hard to cavil at the setlist selection.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

That huge Eagle lighting rig came down during ‘The Eagle has Landed’ and the song had a suitably epic feel notably with Paul Quinn’s feedback-strewn solo while Biff dedicated ‘Never Surrender’ to the fans loyalty during the pandemic, and was rewarded with a moshpit which looked like it was ever growing from my rather more coivd secure berth in the circle.  It was around this time when Biff related his promise to get his first ever tattoo if they sold out Hammersmith and I sensed he was having buyer’s remorse, not least with him now being on blood thinning medication.

Both guitarists shared the solos and were exemplary if unshowy throughout while a pair of title tracks as ‘Dogs of War’ segued into ‘Solid Ball of Rock’, complete with audience participation section, were a reminder that even when their popularity waned in the nineties, Saxon could still deliver the goods. However compared to those days Biff seems to have had a new lease of life with the 71 year old’s voice sharper and clearer than ever, helped it must be said by an excellent venue sound. His bluff humour showed when he explained the meaning of upcoming album ‘Carpe Diem’ was ‘seize the day- in Yorkshire’!

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

The treats kept coming with ‘Dallas 1pm’, apparently added to the previous night’s set, complete with backdrop and sound effects which almost made you feel you were witnessing the shots fired from the grassy knoll; ’And the Bands Played On’ (a reminder that at one point they were as much a fixture in the top 40 rundown as the Friday Rock Show); and ‘To Hell and Back Again’. A rather less frantic ‘Power and the Glory’ was one of my favourites of the night, with an excellent solo from Doug,  then Biff teasing with a repeated cry of ‘fill your head…’ before an outpouring of energy both onstage and in the crowd to ‘Heavy Metal Thunder’.

There was plenty of time for encores and after I feared they wouldn’t play it, ‘Crusader’ was a good example of how they made the most of the stage set up, Paul coming down from the elevated walkway as he played the intro to this much loved epic. That led into a couple of crowd pleasing classics that so many of us of a certain age grew up on- after ‘747 (Strangers in the Night)’ with the guitarists sharing the solos, Biff brought Paul to the front of the stage and though I knew what was about to happen I couldn’t resist a bit of air guitaring from my seat as he punched out the opening riff to ‘Princess of the Night’.

SAXON- Hammersmith Apollo, London, 29 January 2022

The weekend saw them announce a 20022 tour in support of ‘Carpe Diem’ (already given a rave review on this site) which I am sure will be up to their usual standard of excellence, but it will struggle to match this very special night. For once, the larger venue allowed them to take a leaf out of the books of their one time NWOBHM contemparies Def Leppard and Iron Maiden and use an elaborate stage set to choreograph the show around. Combined with the atmosphere of anticipation and a set of generous length based on their crowd pleasers, I left thinking this must be my favourite of all the many Saxon shows I have seen over the years.

News: MAGNUM Month at Get Ready to ROCK! – 50 Years, New Album, UK and European Tour (March 2022)

Magnum - Giants of Rock (2015)

Ahead of their UK and European tour in late March/April 2022, Get Ready to ROCK! will be celebrating the band Magnum throughout the month of March.

Magnum celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2022.  They developed from a band playing cover versions (and increasingly their own material) in Birmingham clubs and pubs in the early 1970s.  Since that time they have released 22 studio albums, the latest of which came out in January ‘The Monster Roars’.

The band’s landmark album was released in 1985 ‘On A Storyteller’s Night’ and subsequently – signed to Polydor Records – they released a series of high profile albums and with arena appearances in the late-1980s including NEC in Birmingham and Wembley Stadium in London.

At the start of the 1990s, with musical tastes changing, the band’s brand of melodic pomp rock was no longer in vogue and there followed several years of increasing independence followed by their split in 1995.

Magnum Month @GRTR!

After a brief period in a different guise – the band Hard Rain – the mainmen Bob Catley and Tony Clarkin decided to reform the band they’d founded in 1972 and released a new Magnum album ‘Breath Of Life’.  This received positive reviews and since that time the band have gone from strength to strength.

Says Managing Editor David Randall: “Several Get Ready to ROCK! reviewers share a love of the band and their more recent revival coincides with the development of our website.  The band have been covered many times in terms of reviews, features and interviews and we will be plundering our archive during March to uncover and repurpose this material.”

In addition the website’s radio station will feature more Magnum music in the playlists.

David added “Back in 2012 we celebrated Magnum’s 40th anniversary which tied in with our 10th birthday.  We broadcast several radio features including one presented by long time fan and follower the late Malcolm Dome.  We’ll also revisit these specials”.

Get Ready to ROCK! is inviting Magnum fans to send in their personal recollections of the band over a 50 year period (albums, gigs, impact of their music etc).  These will be published on the website and included in a two hour radio special on Sunday 20 March “What Magnum Means To Me…”  Respondents should also list their top 5 favourite Magnum tracks.

Says News and Reviews Editor Jason Ritchie: “Magnum have always evoked a strong passion with fans – a combination of strong visual imagery, lyrical content, great musicianship and anthemic songs – and it will be good to share their memories over a long period.”

Magnum fans should use the contact form on the website to send in their contribution before 18 March.  They can also record their thoughts on a mobile phone for broadcast.

Magnum’s UK tour starts on 28 March.

Album review: PETER KNIGHT & JOHN SPIERS – Both In A Tune

PETER KNIGHT & JOHN SPIERS – Both In A Tune

Website [Release date 11.02.22]

Peter Knight defines a progressive musician as he always seeks to further his music, be it traditional tunes given a new arrangement, or his own compositions. Famous of course as a member of Steeleye Span until 2013, after which he has been very busy with Gigspanner (and its Big Band offshoot) and a Knight & Spiers album. The Spiers is John Spiers, co-founder of Bellowhead, and another who keeps busy musically having worked with the likes of Jon Boden, Jackie Oates and more recently, the Gigspanner Big Band.

The duo start the album off with a very familiar tune, ‘Scarborough Fair’. This version highlights two main strengths of the album – the combined playing of these two fine musicians and how they can make the familiar sound fresh & new. Knight’s violin weaves magic surrounded by the melodeon playing of Spiers. It is hard to describe the wonder and beauty of this, and indeed any of the tunes on here, with mere words. It really is a case of let the music do the talking.

Another traditional tune, ‘Yellow Haired Laddie’, whisks the listener away into another aural delight, as is the upbeat fun of ‘Abbot’s Bromley Horn Dance’.

The duo pen their own music too which sees both ‘Drone in D’ and ‘Improv 3’ push the sounds into progressive, freeform territory. Good to see two such experienced musicians still pushing themselves musically and seemingly enjoying themselves immensely in the process.

‘Battle of the Somme’ closes the album on a melancholy note, with the violin playing lending an almost ghostly feel.

It is fair to say any album involving either Peter Knight or John Spiers will be worth investing in. When they combine their talents it becomes a ‘must have’. Listening for pleasure is what an album like this was made for. ****

Album review: EMPATH – Visitor

Fat Possum Records  [Release date 11.02.22]

Upon first listen to Empath’s new album Visitor, a rich blend of artistic influences jumped out within the individualistic sound the Philly foursome have to offer. Psych-rock royalty like 13th Floor Elevators, The Velvet Underground and Cream came to mind, along with more modern legends such as Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. After learning the album was produced by UMO’s one and only Jake Portrait, their sound made even more sense. It is worth being hesitant to draw too many comparisons when listening to artists so as not to bring the attention away from their own unique talents. But from the way the self-proclaimed ‘freak pop band from Philadelphia’ discuss their most recent body of work, it seems they are pretty comfortable in acknowledging their influences and idols.

From the first track it is evident that this album brings all the elements that you came to know and love about Empath from their 2019 debut album Active Listening: Night on Earth and then pushes it to the next level. The rough-and-ready appeal is there whilst also achieving a more fine-tuned sound. Vocalist Catherine Elicson’s words sit on top of the mix and mean the songs instantly become more hook-y. If this review isn’t proof enough that they are ear-worms, this is your invitation to listen to Visitor twice through and not get “Passing Stranger” stuck in your head.

It seems that the band are constantly balancing their underground, shoegaze-y temperament with moments of “clear poppy-ness”. They don’t want to be “tied down to one song or sound”, Pitchfork calling them “a thrilling rush of pop sparkle and art-rock experimentalism.” It seems that the band, the critics and the listeners can all agree on one thing: Empath are hard to pigeon-hole, and why would we want to? The modern psychedelic scene has brought about a revival of the wacky and wonderful, people like Kevin Parker helping to put it back on the map and into the ears of the wider population. Despite the rising interest, Empath keep their alternative charm. They fit well next to names like Melody’s Echo Chamber and Moses Gunn Collective and, fittingly, will be supporting Sunflower Bean (who have also worked with Fat Possum Records) later in February.

Most of the songs are in some way captivating, and have the capacity to live in your head and drive you crazy – if the definition of crazy is listening to the same album over and over. One honourable mention would have to be “Born 100 Times”, which holds one of their many enchanting lyrics: “You’re soft like leather in the heat because devotion comes so easily in every colour you can dream”. This image of soft leather is so evocative, the word choice nothing short of delicious.

“Passing Stranger” is another personal favourite, the name alone very much in keeping with the whole album’s themes of liminal spaces, loneliness and memory. The continuity between the album art and the lyrics is admirable, the photographer Andrew Emond specialising in abandoned building interiors. Elicson explains that we can “think of Visitor as a soundtrack to memories and feelings that remain in places people have left behind”. The whole body of work is underpinned by samples of “films, Minecraft, a cassette of nature sounds from the Bayou, recordings of an air conditioner, and a church choir heard through the walls of [a] warehouse”, this collection of sonic treats “a collage of sounds intended to produce a feeling of hearing life through walls.” It is safe to say, the idea of this album alone is trippy. The real thing doesn’t disappoint either.

A stand out moment is the series of three tracks: “80s”, “V” and “Bell”. The last line of “80s” (which has one of the catchiest hooks on the record) sums up the dissociative vibe that beautifully haunts the whole thing; “you feel like a visitor to your own fantasy”. Between this and the first words of “Bell” is the ambient sound bath instrumental Empath dubbed “V”. This track harks back to the long, intoxicating journeys that songs would take us on during the psychedelic 70s, providing the perfect contrast to the 2-3 minute tunes the album primarily features. Distant synths and guitars create a seamless transition that prepares us for Bell’s themes of solitude; “You’re out here by yourself ringing the same bell to remember the sound of sweetness…”.

Visitor is a carefully constructed kaleidoscope of sounds that gives us a dreamy exploration into quite an expansive idea. As we watch “America’s most inventive young psychedelic band” (Rolling Stone) shoot towards the stratosphere, we have the pleasure of melodies and poetry to remind us to live as presently as possible in every moment, or to welcome impermanence. And if neither of those take your fancy, stick it on and have a dance. ****

Album review: UK SUBS – A Punk Rock Anthology 1978-2017

UK SUBS – A Punk Rock Anthology 1978-2017

Edsel [Release date 28.1.22]

The UK Subs back catalogue is the gift that keeps on giving, surely qualifying them as one of the most compiled groups of the punk/new wave era. The beauty of this 56 track 2CD set is that it spans their entire career up to 2017, with tracks licensed in from a myriad of labels.

CD1 focusses on their more commercially successful years and, crucially, contains (where applicable) the superior ‘single’ versions. Kicking things off are both sides from the independently released City Records single from 1978, ‘C.I.D.’ and ‘Live In A Car’.

The Subs had quite a run of hits in 1979/80, with all six singles for the GEM label in this period hitting the UK Top 40. All are present here – ‘Strangehold’, ‘Tomorrows Girls’, ‘Warhead’, ‘Teenage’, ‘Party In Paris’, and their cover of the Zombies’ ‘She’s Not There’. The classic ‘Keep On Running (Til You Burn)’ also deserved to be a bigger hit.

As well as several B-sides, CD1 also contains a select number of key album tracks, including two from arguably their finest LP “Endangered Species”. Originally issued in 1982 by NEMS, present here are the title track and ‘Down On The Farm’ (later covered by Guns N’ Roses). There are also two cuts from the underrated follow up “Flood Of Lies”. As a primer for their 1978-1983 output, CD1 boasts a terrific selection.

CD2 covers a lot more ground, drawing highlights from 1985 to 2017. As well as various singles, the ‘deep cut’ selections are often outstanding with the brutal ‘Rock N Roll Savage’, melodic gem ‘Drag Me Down’ (with vocals by bassist Alvin Gibbs) and storming ‘Here Comes Alex’ all standouts.

The run of impressive later period tracks continues with ‘Bitter & Twisted’ and ‘Riot’ (from 1997/98 respectively), ‘Soho’ (from 2002’s “Universal”) and the haunting ‘Sick Velveteen’ from 2015’s “Yellow Leader”. There’s also a lively take on the traditional ‘Drunken Sailor’, and the set is rounded off with 2017 single ‘The Beast’.

The CDs are housed in a smart foldout card sleeve and the packaging incorporates images of all original singles and albums. For a group whose line-up has regularly changed over the years (Charlie Harper being the only mainstay), it’s also handy to have a personnel breakdown and credits for each track. There are no sleeve notes, but as an introduction to the band this is a perfect starting point. Even for the committed fan it’s a bonus to have all of the 7” versions in one place, along with tracks from the less regularly compiled later years. Almost 2½ hours of prime UK Subs! ****
