If you can't find what you're looking for - or wish to refine your search to include only references to the key search term - try putting inverted commas around the search term e.g. "Steve Lukather" or "Black Star Riders"
For example if you enter Black Star Riders the results will include all instances of "Black" "Star" and "Riders". The search will also be slower.

Album review: JON BODEN & THE REMNANT KINGS – Parlour Ballads
…long time collaborator Andy Bell and features The Remnant Kings – Sam Sweeney, Ben Nicholls, Rob Harbron, Sally Hawkins & M G Boulter. Paul Sartin was a key member of the Remnant Kings for ten years and was involved in the early developments of this album, before his passing in 2022. The first single from the album, ‘Old Brown’s Daughter’, is one of the finest vocal performances from Jon Boden, although to be fair he is one of the finest folk… Continue reading
Gig review: RICHARD MARX – Royal Albert Hall, London, 22 May 2024
…venues when he comes over to the UK. Building on some memorable acoustic shows at the Union Chapel in Autumn 2022, he announced a fuller UK tour which culminated in this show at the Royal Albert Hall – a return to the scene of his first major show here in 1989, in the days when he still sported that magnificent mullet. There was another American legend as support in John Oates, seated and acoustic with only a cajon and percussion player fo… Continue reading

Album review : STRIDER – Exposed and Misunderstood (Remasters)
…uitarist Gary Grainger (who later did a ten year stint in Rod Stewart’s band), Ian Kewley, Lee Hunter and Jimmy Hawkins were a solid outfit, only a stomp and a holler away from success. The latter two left after the debut album, to be replaced by Lee Strzelczyk and Tony Brock. This new lineup survived only one more album, and then it was goodbye. The band’s music was rooted in American blues, and crafted to British rock specifications, which didn… Continue reading

Gig review: GLENN HUGHES – Electric Ballroom, London, 25 October 2023
…guitarist Tom Shemer, who I couldn’t help thinking had the looks of a young Marty Feldman crossed with a Hawkins brother from the Darkness. By the time they ended with ‘Get With You’ and ‘Tomorrow’, an audience of Hughes and Purple fanatics that might have been hard to please responded very enthusiastically. Provided their songwriting develops and gains a more distinct identity of its own, I suspect this dynamic show will be a headlining o… Continue reading

Gig review: GUNS N’ ROSES – British Summer Time, Hyde Park, 30 June 2023
…variety in the songwriting to make it a great one for me. The Darkness opened with ‘Growing On Me’, with Justin Hawkins’ falsetto in fine fettle, but surprisingly for a festival set most of the early songs were more recent favourites including ‘Motor Heart’ and ‘Heart Explodes’ and the best of them all in ‘Solid Gold’, sadly undermined by a poor, wind-affected sound for much of the set. The fact Justin mentioned they were playing a 20th ann… Continue reading

Album review: IAN HUNTER- Defiance Part 1
…result is one of the most star studded guest lists ever, sadly with a couple who have already left us in Taylor Hawkins and Jeff Beck. The advantage of bringing in guests is also to widen the musical base and the opening title track is a prime example of that with some trademark guitar runs from Slash allied to Metallica’s Robert Trujillo on bass and possibly the closest to out and out hard rock that ‘Unter has ever got. In contrast ‘… Continue reading

Gig review: BLACK STONE CHERRY AND THE DARKNESS – Wembley Arena, London, 4 February 2023
…rlier on the tour in Liverpool. They opened with one of their vintage anthems in ‘Growing On Me’, before Justin Hawkins, now shorter haired and sporting a relatively conservative Queen ‘Hot Space’ t-shirt, delivered his welcome old chestnut ‘gimme a d, gimme an ‘arkness’ prior to brother Dan riffing through ‘Black Shuck’. It was followed by the title track of last album ‘Motorheart’, not up to the quality of early stuff songwise but w… Continue reading
Feature: GRTR!@20 – The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness – THE DARKNESS (January 2023)
…ock Act, and Best British Album. In an early interview for our ‘Rising Stars’ series in 2003 Justin Hawkins confirmed the band’s influences – “Aerosmith, and in particular Steven Tyler changed my life back in ’89, whilst AC/DC have provided years of inspiration.” When asked about the state of rock music he exclaimed: Rock music is kicking arse again – it’s a sign of the times that the forthcom… Continue reading

Gig review: INGLORIOUS – Camden Underworld, London, 28 September 2022
…ent of Glenn Hughes at his most soulful then, paying tribute to those we had lost, in the week of the LA Taylor Hawkins tribute concert we had a mini Foo Fighters medley, Phil showing on ‘My Hero’ that he has an excellent voice in his own right which also blended effectively as Nathan took over the baton with ‘Best of You’. Things also looked up with Danny playing some interesting baroque guitar sounds on ‘We Will Meet Again’ while ‘He Will Provi… Continue reading

…ead vocals, having taken over the mantle earlier this year, and the band being on tour for pretty much all of 2022, making up for lost time and grabbing every opportunity to gig. The Sons are a guitarist down as Andy ‘Moose’ Muse is recovering after having an emergency op in the middle of their hectic tour schedule, but he’s still with them and manning the merch table at gigs in good humour, wishing you a speedy recovery Moose, we need you back o… Continue reading
