The Best of 2021

…nd I mean everything, a talented multi-instrumentalist with a mix of jazz fusion/rock and a tad proggy too. 4.  LEE AARON Radio On! Lee has perhaps remained a somewhat guilty pleasure over the years.  Her last couple of albums reveal a great voice and musicality that we always knew was there. ‘Radio On’ deserves a much wider audience than those who were diverted by those cheesy, if rather sexy, 1980s videos. 5.=  SMITH KOTZEN Great pairing and so… Continue reading

Album review: LEE AARON – Radio On!

LEE AARON - Radio On!

In this exclusive interview edit, containing non-broadcast material, Lee Aaron chats about her “return” to a hard rock format in 2016. The full interview, first broadcast 1 August 2021,  includes a selection of tracks from her earliest albums to the present. Metalville [Release date 23.07.21] Lee Aaron was something of a poster girl for melodic hard rock in the 1980s.  She played the Reading Festival in 1983 even though her then lat… Continue reading

Album review: TIMO TOLKKI’s AVALON – The Enigma Birth

timo tolkki avalon enigma

…than skillfully orchestrated rock/metal. They’re sung by Caterina Nix, sounding here like Pat Benatar or Lee Aaron. She does her best, but ultimately, the arrangements and production are flat and uninspired. We’re hitting a wall here. Then comes the breakthrough. A handful of tracks lift the album into the world of Tolkki’s grandiose, pomp peppered metal. ‘Truth’, ‘Another Day’, ‘Beauty And WarR… Continue reading

EP review: ICONIC EYE – Back From Beyond The Sun

ICONIC EYE – Back From Beyond The Sun

…ombshell, as their new lead singer. Five songs on this EP certainly show off the vocal talents of Janey Smith – Lee Aaron meets Leigh Matty of Romeo’s Daughter. The title track taps into the band’s heavier side to great effect, as does their beefed up version of the Jefferson Starship classic ‘Jane’. A good choice of cover by the band. The more melodic/AOR sound comes through on ‘Ghost Town’, a song that has plenty of keys mixed into the guitar r… Continue reading

Album review: BLACK ROSE MAZE

BLACK ROSE MAZE

…Me’, you can tell that Rosa’s been absorbing the dynamic vocals of fellow Canadians Ann Wilson and Lee Aaron. And on ‘Free’, a bluesy rock song with only a few metal embellishments, she switches from Rock diva to Nashville cat, undercutting the metal with sweet, soothing country pop artistry. As you move through the album, you can’t help but notice that the surface of eack song is pockmarked by the scars of heartbre… Continue reading

Quick plays: MARITA, LUCIFER, LIGHT AMONG SHADOWS

MARITA Bloodlust

…80′s Madonna in some of her vocals, this time around she leans more heavily on influences like Joan Jett, Lee Aaron, Lita Ford, Vixen, Pat Benatar, and Cherry Bomb, in a set that while it may not be particularly sophisticated, or original, is unquestionably … huge fun. The opener ’66 Crush’, with its faux radio report opening of a shooting, is simply irresistible – think Joan Jett fronts Motorhead on a NWOHM classic, with… Continue reading

Album review: LEE AARON – Diamond Baby Blues

LEE AARON - Diamond Baby Blues

Metalville [Release date 27.04.18] After a couple of decades in the wilderness dabbling with jazz, Lee Aaron made her rock ‘comeback’ in 2016 with the self-financed, and marginally more pop/rock orientated, Fire And Gasoline.  An excellent release that seems to have passed us by here at GRTR! Diamond Baby Blues, takes that renaissance a step further with classy set of 7 covers and 5 originals. And while it’s indisputable that… Continue reading

Gig review: LEE AARON – Camden Underworld, London, 16 July 2017

LEE AARON - Camden Underworld, London, 16 July 2017

…metal-loving youngsters were few on the ground. It was therefore unsurprising that  the petite Canadian rocker Lee Aaron’s picture in Kerrang’s ‘Ladykillers’ feature must have featured on many a bedroom wall. Over the years she went for a more refined look and style, and then disappeared from view entirely to do things as diverse as raising a family and making jazz records. Eyebrows were raised at news of a comeback last year, but her return to… Continue reading

ROCKINGHAM FESTIVAL, Nottingham, 21-23 October 2016

…inderella’s Tom Keifer, while the Friday was reduced to four bands from last year’s six. DAY 1 – TRIXTER, LEE AARON, VALENTINE, ART NATION The honour of opening Rockingham fell to Art Nation, the latest in a seemingly endless production line of young Swedish bands.  They were rockier than I had expected and started well with ‘Need You To Understand’,’ I Want Out’ and ‘Start A Fire’, while ‘All In’ had a more melodic hook that reminded me of… Continue reading

Book review: THE HISTORY OF CANADIAN ROCK ‘N’ ROLL by BOB MERSEREAU

THE HISTORY OF CANADIAN ROCK

…uess they have had more success, certainly from the 1990′s onwards, in Europe rather than their homeland. Lee Aaron only gets mentioned in passing which will surely surprise Kerrang! readers of a certain age! The 70′s rock chapter was particularly interesting as it featured Rush, the Band and April Wine, but also the Guess Who and the related band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Both were massively successful and influential bands back in… Continue reading

…est produced EP to date and good to see Terena Armstrong still on vocals as she has a rocking vocal, not unlike Lee Aaron at times. The title track and ‘War Machine’ are the pick of the bunch, especially the latter with its multi-tracked vocals on the chorus. Listen out too for the smoking solos from guitarist Henry Seto, fast and furious yet never detracting from the songs. Off you pop to their website and get a copy then J ****1/2 Review by Jas… Continue reading

PAUL SABU – In Dreams

…art Anymore’, originally done by pomp rockers Angel and ‘If You Can’t Take The Heat’, a Lee Aaron tune (although Paul Sabu co-wrote it with her). Both are given the Sabu treatment and sound mighty fine. ‘The Babysitters’ has a slightly bizarre spoken word start but then it hits party rock mode and Paul Sabu sounds like a deadringer for Sammy Hagar on this one (or is it Sammy Hagar sounds like a deadringer for P… Continue reading
