Album review: MARCO GLÜHMANN – A Fragile Present
…Grützner (bass) are no slouches either. Add in pop-ups by Billy Sherwood (Yes) and no other than Steve Rothery (Marillion) and you can consider the cake iced. It’s always difficult for members of well-established bands to throw off the shackles and come up with something different – and yes, of course you can hear Sylvan, but the coming together with RPWL has delivered an album that either band would be pleased to add to their body of work…. Album review : PALLAS – Eyes In The Night (The Recordings 1981-86, 7CD boxset)
…Of Thorns’ and ‘The Ripper’ witness the band taking on a theatrical Progrock mantle, with echoes and shades of Marillion and King Crimson ringing out loud and clear. A four year slog on the live circuit, and occasional, but valuable radio exposure led to a record deal and an 8 week recording session with Eddy (Yes / ELP) Offord in his US studio. The album, The Sentinel, unashamedly influenced by Marillion, Genesis and others in the Progrock vang… Continue reading

Feature: The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness – MARILLION (July 2023)
…d Randall Self sufficient free spirits who keep getting better, and in spite of “Sugar Mice”… Marillion’s entry into our hallowed portal coincides with the period that they have been self-sufficient. By 1998 ostracised by the likes of EMI they flipped the situation on its head and with ‘Anoraknophobia’ (2001) achieved their first truly crowd-funded release. This trend continued through the millennium. By 2003… Continue reading
News: MARILLION enter The GRTR! Grotto of Greatness in July 2023

A major retrospective tracing Marillion’s progress in the millennium will be published on 1 July by rock website Get Ready to ROCK! and throughout the month Get Ready to ROCK! Radio will feature more of their music. Says Managing Editor David Randall: “When we published the review team’s favourite selections over a 20 year period back in April,… Continue reading

Marillion with their most recent effort ‘An Hour Before Its Dark’ (the choice of Dave Atkinson and David Randall) and Journey, whose career-reviving 2008 album ‘Revelation’ got the nod from melodic fans Jason Ritchie and Andy Nathan. …holy for the current modern malaise; reflection, remorse, and ultimately rebirth. All things must change. 10. MARILLION An Hour Before Its Dark (2022) Less “political” than its predecessor, although affected by the pandemic, Marillion return with a sumptuous album full of lusciousness and loveliness. It happened in 2004: The Darkness win a BRIT award. Following the break up of Creed, guitarist Mark Tremonti, Drummer Scott Phillips a… Continue reading

News: The Best of 2022 – Get Ready to ROCK! reviewers choose their Top Albums of the Year
Marillion made several lists for their album releases and UK tour in 2022 Finally, in 2022, there was something like a return to normality for live music, although more latterly the economic crisis impacted on punters’ disposable income and therefore may have curtailed their usual gig-going gregariousness. In addition, the energy crisis was leaving venues with massive bills, in some cases three times their usual expenditure. Again, we… Continue reading

…makes for an attractive collectors’ package.” ***** Making one or two reviewer best of lists this year is Marillion and Holidays In Eden the last but one of the EMI “definitive versions”. We would caution that the 1991 album was issued in 1998 as a double CD and contains all the contemporaneous bonus tracks as well as a 24-bit master and extensive liner note. That said, this latest “deluxe version” with all the trim… Continue reading

…he quality of his voice and the duo’s material exceeded expectations” – and a support slot to Marillion the project did not endure. 5/10 Public Symphony’s Inspire album was a labour of love, of which we are still proud, a concept album about the ups and downs of life. Having made and finished the album ourselves, we eschewed the temptation to assign rights to a major or indie label, when contracts were still unfairly weighted t… Continue reading

…Europe (pictured) and Thunder. In the case of the latter, they are making some of their best work. Bands like Marillion command great loyalty and are one of the real success stories of the Internet age. But they had the benefit of early success in more moneyed times and a fanbase which they were allowed to grow (and who funded their growth) over a period of 20 years or more. Marillion emerged from an age when the cost of a four minute promoti… Continue reading

Gig review: MARILLION – Hammersmith Apollo, 30 September 2022
Late 2021’s Hammersmith gigs gave a taster of what Marillion had in store for 2022 when they played a sneak preview of the ‘Be Hard On Yourself’ suite. Nine months later the band is back at the venue to play the album from which those tracks came in its entirety. That November evening gave us a fine show. This September one surpassed it. ‘An Hour Before It’s Dark’ was released in March and rocked up to No 2 on the actual charts. Only ‘Misplaced… Continue reading

Album review: MARILLION – Holidays In Eden (Deluxe Edition)
…Records [Release date 16.09.22] For 30 years I have banged on about ‘Holidays In Eden’ being one of Marillion’s finest albums, sometimes overlooked even by the faithful who thought it was a bit too commercial. Even the band (guitarist Steve Rothery in particular) thought this might be the case also. It was the second album with Steve Hogarth on vocals. In 1991 he was still finding his feet although the previous outing ‘S… Continue reading
Interview: Mark Kelly (Marillion) – In Conversation with my Uncle
You all know him as the keyboardist of Marillion, his solo project Mark Kelly’s Marathon, and as of this year, published author of his autobiography Marillion, Misadventures and Marathons: The Life and Times of Mad Jack. I knew him, before all this, as my uncle. Having last seen him at his house for a Kelly family gathering and, before that, at the afterparty of a Marillion gig, being in a zoom meeting with Mark as he sat in the kitchen of the R… Continue reading

…ale’ – might well be ‘Care’ with its superbly slinky undertow blossoming into a classic Marillion anthem. Hogarth’s vocals get better with each outing and the whole is topped by Rothery’s tasteful, soaring guitar figures. The band previewed the opening track ‘Be Hard On Yourself’ on tour last year and the lyrics challenge conspicuous consumption versus saving the planet. The theme is continued on &… Continue reading

Fans of the likes of Marillion, Genesis and Camel will find much to enjoy here – fans of the more challenging end of the prog spectrum should probably look elsewhere. There are highlights everywhere, not least on the fifteen minute opening title track ‘Altitude’ whose cascading piano arpeggios give a delicious foretaste of the joys to come, with Peter… Continue reading

…s enough variety and interest to show that Sabbath wanted to push themselves, even if fans didn’t like them to. MARILLION Fugazi Derided in some quarters as not having the heart of their debut, Marillion’s second album is the go-to choice of a lot of connoisseurs. From the lithe vitriol of ‘Assassing’, the devastating ‘Jigsaw’ and the huge title track, this album really does have it all and the full box set that includes live recordings and an ex… Continue reading

Gig review: FISH – Cambridge Junction, 18 November 2021
After four decades, four studio albums with Marillion and eleven solo albums it’s drawing close to Fish winding down a long and storied musical career that has seen the towering Scotsman touch the hearts of countless thousands around the globe. As much a poet as a singer, his lyrics have brought an imagery and honesty that has painted vivid pictures and tapped into raw emotions, putting the listener into the centre of the action, be it walking… Continue reading

Gig review: MARILLION – Hammersmith Apollo, London, 26 November 2021
Marillion are one of the hardest working live bands around and no surprise that they have wasted little time in getting back on the road after their enforced pandemic hiatus. Tonight was the first of a brace of gigs at the venerable Hammy Apollo. I found myself towards the back of the balcony with a few empty rows behind me on a wet, tube-struck night in town. I’m pleased to say that I am a veteran of many fine Marillion gigs, and tonight was an… Continue reading
