Gig review – DEEP PURPLE – Hydro, Glasgow, 22 November 2017

DEEP PURPLE - Hydro, Glasgow, 22 November 2017

On the 22nd June 1985 I made a very long trip south, on the oldest bus known to man to stand in a flooded field near Stevenage, to witness the return of Deep Purple mark 2 at Knebworth. It was a day to remember for many things, Meat Loaf being bottled off stage, the Scorpions human pyramid and Ritchie Blackmore in a fetching pair of wellies. That was the return but now the guys are playing their Long Farewell tour heralding the end of one of ro… Continue reading

…e try to put across. We’re all about the live show, about recreating the album and stepping it up live.” ‘Before Dark Clouds’ is a big production for an independent release, and it’s in no small measure due to producer Andy Hawkins’s clear vision of what he wanted. Dave: “When we worked with Andy we had the arrangements worked out, but he focussed on simplifying things, so there was much more space for the list… Continue reading

Sebastian Bach - HAIR METAL HEAVEN - Hull, 25-27 August 2017

…ing Out Loud’. In addition the high pitched wheeze of singer Hannes Kett, somewhere between Axl Rose and Justin Hawkins, was an acquired taste. Even without delays, this was a long day and I reluctantly bailed out for my main meal during Killcode, who were bringing a heavier and more modern take to proceedings, returning to find there were further delays before another of the standard bearers of the new wave of Nordic bands in The Poodles. Led by… Continue reading

Album review: AUSTIN GOLD – Before Dark Clouds

AUSTIN GOLD - Before Dark Clouds

…tive writing that is the key and makes the material sound like a real band, a fact beautifully captured by Andy Hawkins’s warm production. Listen to the cleverly titled and hugely impressive opening cut ‘Brand New Low’ and you are hearing a surprisingly mature band with a focussed musical direction and the chops to realize their artistic ambitions. The bone crunching riffs of ‘Another Kinda Bad’ finds them slipping i… Continue reading

RAMBLIN’ MAN FAIR – Mote Park, Maidstone, 29 July 2017

…the band but the other guys don’t allow him to hog the limelight. The two guitarists, Grahame Leslie and David Hawkins played some tasty duel licks throughout the set whilst frontman Richard Taylor delivered his lines with power and clarity. There were a lot of Maiden fans around me who were loving every minute, even when the rain started to pour down, and while I did enjoy the set and seeing Mr Harris away from the day job I still wasn’t comple… Continue reading

Album review: IT – We’re All In This Together

IT - We

…ome catching up to do. IT is the mastermind of Nick Jackson and Andy Rowberry, with the band completed by James Hawkins (bass), Will Chism (drums), and Ryan McCaffrey (keyboards/saxophone). A timely album looking at austerity, the current economic climate and it could almost be a companion soundtrack to the film ‘I Am Daniel Blake’. IT successfully mix a memorable melodic with a hard hitting lyric – ‘Voices’ features… Continue reading

BURNT OUT WRECK Swallow

…heir label including Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. It is interesting to listen to the originals on here like Dale Hawkins’ ‘Suzie Q’, covered since by the Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Susie Quatro amongst others. How the songs have such a sparse production and sound, yet still sound vibrant some sixty years later. Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry feature heavily as you’d expect and Berry’s risqué 1972 hit… Continue reading

Album review: RUSH – 2112 – 40th Anniversary Edition

…all of whom are long time fans of the band. Highlights of these are ‘Overture’ featuring Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins, Billy Talent doing ‘Passage To Bangkok’ and a fantastic cover of ‘Tears’ by Alice In Chains. All the cover versions are excellent and well worth inclusion here. The artists involved emphasise the influence that Rush and ‘2112’ has had on some of today’s biggest rock artists. This is a package worthy of a place in any rock lover… Continue reading

Gig review: GRAHAM BONNET – Boston Music Rooms, London, 8 November 2016

GRAHAM BONNET- Boston Music Rooms, London, 8 November 2016

…who never quite made the big time in the eighties but are now enjoying a second honeymoon. Affable singer Steve Hawkins- now one of two remaining members – got the crowd on side, while a number of songs from a forthcoming album ‘Hoodoo Voodoo’ were significantly heavier, not least as Andy Barrott and Michael Schenker-lookalike Jon Footitt now give them a two guitar attack. There were a few oldies to bring back memories for those of us who r… Continue reading

Gig review: WEYFEST- Rural Life Centre, Tilford, Surrey, 19-21 August 2016

…op world. Indeed other than the shorter hairstyles the opening 10 minutes was like being in a time warp. Justin Hawkins falsettoed his way through ‘Black Shuck’ before archly saying he’d been dying to say ‘good evening Weyfest’ and resurrecting his old ‘Gimme a D, Gimme an Arkness’ routine before going into another first album classic in ‘Growing On Me’. However the tracks from the most recent album ‘Last of Our Kind’, ‘Mudslide’ and ‘Roaring Wat… Continue reading

The Best Of Bill Wyman and Bill Wyman

…as ‘Daydream’ (The Lovin’ Spoonful), ‘I Put A Spell On You’ (Screamin’ Jay Hawkins), and ‘Groovin’ ‘ (The Young Rascals). But what you have to remember, Bill Wyman is fast approaching 80 and his solo work is largely a reflection of the music he listened to as a youth.  However, for those of us who cut our musical teeth at the very end of the 1960s/early 1970s – and who still have an act… Continue reading

Album review: MAVERICK – Big Red

MAVERICK - Big Red

…216;Beyond The Gates’) and ‘Forever’, the latter might be a more serious offering from Justin Hawkins’ mob. The album’s consistency drops a little on a song like ‘The One’ or  ‘Whiskey Lover’ which are a bit too predictable and perfunctory.  The latter rocks along in true Thin Lizzy style but this more straight-ahead rock approach deviates slightly from the stronger material which reflects a m… Continue reading

Gig review: STEELHOUSE FESTIVAL – Ebbw Vale, South Wales, 24 July 2016 (Day 2)

The Darkness - STEELHOUSE FESTIVAL - Ebbw Vale, South Wales, 24 July 2016

…chosen to bring Steelhouse 2016 to a close and it will certainly be remembered for a long time not least Justin Hawkins resplendant in lurid purplish catsuit opened to the navel. ‘Growing On Me’ gives Justin a chance to show how an accomplished guitarist he truly is, sometimes it is a shame that he heavily relies on acting the clown which detracts from the musicianship. Taking to the back of the crowd for the remainder of the set, I s… Continue reading

Gig review: STONE FREE FESTIVAL Day 1 – 02 Arena, London, 18 June 2016

Alice Cooper - STONE FREE FESTIVAL DAY 1 - 02 Arena, London, 18 June 2016

…hed, the sound was very poor on opener ‘Barbarian’. However ‘Growing On Me’ remains a favourite and when Justin Hawkins burst into trademark falsetto on the chorus, my mind was transported back to 2003 and the heady days of Darkness mania. Indeed virtually all the set was taken from ‘Permission To Land’ (available in charity shops everywhere) with old favourites like ‘Black Shuck’, ‘Get Your Hands Off My Woman’ and ‘Stuck In A Rut’, and their lat… Continue reading

Album review: GRANDHOUR – Bombs & Bullets

GRANDHOUR

…o detail, and planning, has paid off.  Main point of interest is vocalist/guitarist and chief songwriter Nicole Hawkins who with hubby Jason and brother-in-law Mark have fashioned an ear-friendly slice of melodic hard rock. The pairing brings to mind the Pat Benatar/Nick Geraldo configuration of old and – if nothing else – the consistency of songwriting and dynamics is similar.  Chris Lugton (keys, guitar), who joined after the album… Continue reading
