Micki Free is a native American blues guitarist who you probably heard as a member of Shalamar (yes really) and Crown Of Thorns. But here, solo, he’s a rather good blues guitarist heavily influenced by Muddy Waters, Albert King and Billy Gibbons. With a touch of keyboards / organ, a lot of passion and even more melody, he is at the smooth / accessible end of Hendrix.
The title track opens and rocks rather well, it’s mid pace with excellent guitar work and a whiskey nod is reminiscent of the slow/melodic ZZ Top. “Six Feet Down In The Blues” has some good piano touches. A highlight of the album has to be the 17 minute take on Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile Blues”, which riffs and shreds like a monster. And while we’re in Hendrix mode, there’s a live at Hyde Park take of “Red House”, featuring Bill Wyman.
The guitar work is exemplary, exceptional, but the vocals and keyboards are a little on the easy side. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout. You want some decent blues rock guitar, here’s your man.
