Desaster interview
Tormenter answers the Q’s set by Chris Martin…
Most of your releases seem to be split albums, tribute appearances, and EP’s with a handful of full length albums interspersed. Is there a particular reason for this?
No special reason. But there is always an idea to bring something special, a split with good friends, a tribute to someone. And we had done 7 “real” studio albums, and I think that’s enough. It’s more about the quality, and we are not in music business. We only do what WE want!
The new CD The Arts Of Destruction has been out about a month now. Personally I enjoy it very much. How has the response been? How did the writing and recording process go?
The response was very good, but that’s not really important, like I said before, Desaster is not in music business, we don’t care what others think or say. The process of writing is always the same. Infernal came up with the riffs, the basics of a song, and we build the song in the rehearsal room till everybody is happy. Easy…hahahaha
There are a lot of dark themes to the songs you write, mostly about war and satanic imagery. Where does the inspiration come for the songs?
It’s important for me to have a picture in my mind when I listen to the demos of the songs. Then I try to “describe” the picture which comes to my brain while I’m listening. Inspiration comes from everything around, mostly these things I worry about a little…
What sets the new CD The Arts Of Destruction apart from what the band has done before?
This is hard for me to answer, I love all my babies. This is a question for your readers!
The first released track is “Queens Of Sodomy.” How was it decided it would be the one to best represent Desaster on the latest album? I really like it. Good mix of black and thrash metal.
This was a mistake, we wanted TROOPS OF HEATHENS, GRAVES OF SAINTS as the first song, but something happened and QUEENS was released first. But you are right, a fine mix of black and thrash.
What sets Desaster apart from other black metal bands?
We don’t take ourselves to serious, and we don’t think that we are good musicians at all.
What are the tour plans for the band? It seems you tour fairly extensively overseas. If you do tour the US in support of the new album what should the crowds expect?
We don’t play complete tours at all. We prefer single shows at the weekend, because we don’t need holidays from our normal jobs, and there are more (drunken) people in front of the stages if you play on Saturday than on a Monday or any other day of the week. We often play South America, I think that’s a good ground for us, but I don’t know why.
I’m noticing lately a wealth of bands in the metal world coming out of Germany. It’s a country known for the birth of many incredible bands over the years. What makes Germany such fertile land for the metal world? How does Desaster fit into this legacy of Germanic metal?
I don’t know, nearly every country has it’s music traditions. Maybe Germany is know for it’s Thrash thing, Norway for the second BM generation, the UK for VENOM and BLACK SABBATH, METALLICA and SLAYER for the US. The most important thing is that we sound like DESASTER, you can hear many influences, but in the end you hear DESASTER. That’s the only thing that matters.
